Thanks for the link.
It was one of the subject i have read to follow all the instructions.
And when i use a command like the one in the subject :
thor2 -mode emergency -hexfile HEX.hex -mbnfile msimage.mbn -orig_gpt
I don't managed to have the phone started life with red screen as described, and has said previouly, i think the "Message send failed with error code -1" may be for something but i don't understand why i have this.

So no idea anyone ?
It seems that i have no choice to put it in the trash then

Try WPRT using the GUI. If you cannot flash your stock rom from there, send the device to your local repair shop.:fingers-crossed:

Same here.
Is there a chance to get it back using a JTAG device?
Or maybe I should get a device with defect display and swap the main board?

Don't toss it! I'd totally pay the shipping for a 1020 to tinker with that isn't my daily driver. I'd happily try a JTAG fix on it if it's going to be scrapped.
I'd search further, but let me know if you can't find a fix and I'll get you some JTAG instructions, that could be fun!

Unbricking I8190N with Heimdall

Hello, I don't see why this is not working -- I'm working on the following model:
Model number: GT-I8190N
Baseband version: I8190NXXALL6
Build number: JZO54K.I8190NXXALL6
I accidentally overwrote the partition table; now I'm trying to push into the original firmware:
Samsung-Updates.com-GT-I8190N-DBT-I8190NXXALL6-1356151513.zip
using Heimdall (v1.4 RC1) and i8190N_goldenxx.pit, which I've found on this awesome forum, and corresponds to the original PIT:

Everything flashes ok, but the device is stuck to the boot "samsung" screen (Yep, I waited hours; also tried with different firmwares and same procedure, but I've always got the same result)
I don't really see what's going wrong here... any idea ? PS: I don't have a Win box here
Guys, anyone here could please provide params.lfs, recover.img and other possibly needed files ? (Or point me any place on the web for finding them?)
I understand it's bothering to acquire the files from a device, if that fixes the problem I will thank with paypal
(And the files will remain here for other guys with similar issues)

Try Odin instead and see if any problems pop up or try to redownload the firmware at SamMobile

How to recover Lumia 925? DLOAD/ARMPRG

Hi everyone,
I need help to recover my Lumia 925 phone, please. I've tried the various tutorials for using Thor2 in emergency mode to flash a new bootloader etc but unfortunately I'm not having any luck. The phone was originally on QHSUSB_DLOAD but is now on QHSUSB_ARMPRG after I tried "Recover Bootloader" in WPInternals.
Here's the story:
A few days ago my Lumia 925 froze. This was after trying to deploy a XAP as explained here. It wouldn't respond to any button presses so I did a soft reset (Vol- and power) and left it for a few minutes. When I came back it asked for my SIM PIN, which I put in, but then it froze again. After I left it for a while and it was still frozen I did another soft reset and left it. Again, I came back later, put in the SIM PIN, but this sim time is said SIM error, and then froze. So I removed the SIM, did a soft reset and left it again. It said SIM error, so I did the same again.
Next time when I came back (after two hours) it was totally dead, nothing on screen, cold to the touch, no response to any buttons, I couldn't reset it. Actually, if I hold down the power button for 10-20 seconds the windows logo lights up and the phone disappears and reappears in device manager.
I tried Windows Device Recovery Tool but it doesn't recognise the phone, doesn't list Lumia 925 and then tells me the device cannot be recovered. When connected to a computer the phone is shown as QHSUSB_DLOAD, "Care Suite Emergency Connectivity", driver dated 12/6/2015.
After searching on these forums and elsewhere I found many references and tutorials for using Thor2 in various recovery procedures. I got my firmware from lumiafirmware.com and used Emergency mode to try and flash the HEX and MBN files.
Unfortunately it didn't succeed, kept failing with error code 8 after trying OPEN_MULTI_REQ and Thor2 exited with error code 85021:

To attempt another flash I had to hold down the phone power button for 10-15 seconds, after which the windows logo lit up and the QHSUSB_DLOAD device disappeared and reappeared again in device manager.
Sometimes Thor2 would crash.

I tried to use WPInternals Restore Bootloader but it crashed every time (see log in post below) so I changed to using another USB port. Then the device appeared as QHSUSB_ARMPRG. I tried more emergency mode flashing but got the same errors as when it was recognised as QHSUSB_DLOAD. The only difference is that it now takes ~20 seconds of holding the power button down to get the windows logo to light up, so something has obviously changed somewhere. UPDATE: This is not consistent, it's now back to 10-15 seconds.

Same result with Hex from HeathCliff (I think it's the same one) and from skiddd (different). All Hexs are different from the FAST8960_CATWALK.hex from lumiafirmware.com and also different sizes (204kB vs 201kB from lumiafirmware.com).
So, is QHSUSB_ARMPRG better or worse than QHSUSB_DLOAD? What should my next steps be?
I think I remember finding an explanation of how the Windows Phone bootloaders work but I can't find it anymore, has someone got the link?
Thanks in anticipation of lots of useful suggestions and explanations
Tried method posted by zapirkon, but unsuccessful.

My lumia 640 xl bricked after 2 chained hard resets.... there was the problem.
Having read the whole this thread now, I think my phone is dead and requires a new mainboard. If I'm lucky a repair centre could revive it with JTAG. Or maybe it just needs a new battery?

Sounds similar then. Did you manage to recover it?
Have you try to flash with nokia software recovery tool?
---------- Post added at 06:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:24 PM ----------
Yes, with wdrt. Lumia 640 xl is a newer device.

NSRT doesn't recognise the phone, that's as much as I have tried.
The files for NSRT don't look the same as WDRT, there's no thor2. How do you suggest that I try using NSRT?
Thanks
I just measured the battery voltage and it's 2.65V and it's meant to be 3.7V. Could a low battery be the cause of the flashing problem?
With the battery disconnected and the phone plugged into the computer by USB it's still seen as QHSUSB_ARMPRG.
I guess that the battery isn't charging anymore, so how to get enough voltage to flash the phone? It's not easy to connect these sealed batteries to an external charger!
But then since the phone is connected to the computer by USB, the computer should supply the power for flashing, right?

Incorrect .hex, try a patched one from the WPI thread (the ones from lumiafirmware.com usually don't work)
Look for one with the filename being the RKH of your phone.

I did try the corrected Hex files from HeathCliff, Zapirkon, and others. Are you saying I should try all the Hex files? Are they phone specific?
Thanks.
Okay, well, I'll keep trying.
So I connected a power supply to the battery terminals (very fiddly on these sealed batteries) and charged it up a bit - only to 3.4V, not very high - it's back on charge now but I took it off to measure and since it was about 2.7V I decided to do another test flash.
And I got some new results, more progress, but still a fail.
This was a flash using WDRT, with the product code files put in the packages directory:

still ARMPRG? if yes, reinstall the driver, as that is definitely not correct. 9008 mode shouldn't be called that

Thanks for the suggestion. ARMPRG is the mode that Microsoft Care Connectivity drivers identify it as. How does this relate to DLOAD and BULK? I've tried to find a description of these modes and how they relate to boot/flash sequence but can't find anything.
I installed the Qualcomm drivers using these instructions. I used the drivers from Qualcomm Software Downloader 4.2, but these are from 2012. Are there more recent drivers available?
In device manager I selected "QHSUSB_ARMPRG" and updated driver to assign it to the Qualcomm driver set and it's identified as "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" in Ports section, but in the driver details the bus reported device description is still QHSUSB_ARMPRG, not QHSUSB_DLOAD. WPInternals still crashes during restore bootloader with exactly the same error log, so I don't think the driver is the issue, I think it's the communication with the phone, and the phone being in ARMPRG mode is a symptom of the problem. If I can switch it back into DLOAD I might have a chance.
I installed QPST and in eMMC software download app it identifies the phone as "COM5 Phone in Download mode". I tried to "switch device to DLOAD" in eMMC software download app but it gave me "Error 0x80004005 whilst switching selected device to download mode". In EFSExplorer nothing appears so assume the file system is not accessible. QPST Service Programming won't work because the phone is in download state. Backup in Qualcomm Software Downloader won't work because the phone is not in Diagnostics state. From all this I assume that ARMPRG is a form of download state, or ARMPRG means something is broken and it can't be switched to DLOAD state.
I have the version 2.7.410 of QPST installed, is there a later version? The latest user guide I can find is from 2010!
I also found and installed Lumia Phone Test Application (formerly Nokia Care Suite I think but doesn't seem to support non-Lumia phones) but it can't see the phone either.
Is this a case of the phone having a Samsung eMMC that has gone into write-protect mode? Any way to check this? Any way to reverse this been found yet?
I'll try and test some more later.
Here's the QPST server log, but I don't think it's much help:

You should try manually force EDL mode, as to me it seems like the phone is not in the correct mode. Before you ask, I have no idea on why, but it seems to be that way.

Is this what you mean? It definitely works on the Lumia 925?
Is there any documentation that describes the different modes for QHSUSB? i.e. DLOAD, ARMPRG, BULK (and FLSHPRG?) and how they relate to each other, what sequence they follow each other in? A troubleshooting flowchart? (note I have tried extensive googling but turned up nothing definitive).

Okay, I dismantled the phone to this stage, see pic. The cover and heat transfer pad of the package-on-package has been removed to expose the Hynix memory chip. R3209 is located under this metal surround which is stuck (soldered?) to the board. I tried to remove it but can't without risking damaging resistors etc. Should I cut a gap? Or is there an alternative?

I usually break it down the board, but that is quite dangerous...

You mean fully remove the metal surround? I don't think I've got tools for that, most of my stuff is the right size for car maintenance, not PCBs
I pulled the edge of the metal frame away from the PoP and was able to short the resistor out against the frame using a multimeter probe. The phone was recognised as QHSUSB_DLOAD in device manager, but WPInternals still didn't recognise it. I tried restore bootloader from WPI anyway and it's been in "Sending Loader" for over 50 minutes. Is this too long? Is it okay just to stop WPI, exit it and disconnect the USB?
I tried again and got past the "Sending Loader" stage, but then it crashed during the download of the firmware, same as before I forced DLOAD.
I tried the phone in another USB port and found that it's recognised as ARMPRG again! I swapped about, reshorted R3209, rebooted, etc, but long story short, my front panel USB ports see the phone as DLOAD and the rear ones as ARMPRG. However, the behaviour of WPInternals and WDRT is the same regardless of which ports I use - thor2 log even says:
[22:22:09.113] D_MSG : Check if device in Dload
[22:22:09.114] D_MSG : Connection to DLOAD mode succeeded

I've tried holding various buttons when connected the USB cable, battery connected and disconnected, but it's the same for all.
In fact, now the phone doesn't respond to button presses at all - holding down power, or power and volume down, doesn't cause the phone to reset (disappear and reappear in device manager) or for the windows logo to light up at all. The only time the windows logo lights up is very briefly when the USB is connected.
I tried firmware for product codes that have worked for other people, but they didn't work for me.
I've also tried Nokia Software Updater and Nokia Care Suite. The first doesn't work anymore because Nokia's servers have been shutdown and the second can't work if it can't see the device (like Lumia Phone Test Application).
There's a few more things I've found which I'll try tomorrow but I've pretty much given up, I suspect the eMMC is damaged or write-protected.
So I'll probably buy a new mainboard, ~€20 on Ali-Express. Anyone got any recommendations for other suppliers?
I've tried almost everything twice, with and without the battery, but unfortunately the results are the same every time.
This afternoon I confirmed that the behaviour of WPInternals and WDRT is the same regardless of which USB port I use (front or rear) therefore it doesn't matter if the phone is in DLOAD or ARMPRG mode, the result is still a failure to recover the phone. I used Wireshark to monitor the traffic, I will work out to attach the traces for anyone who knows the protocols well enough to understand them and see what the problem is. To me, it looks like the phone refuses to go into fast download protocol, resulting in the OPEN_MULTI_REQ failures shown in the thor2 logs.
I'd like to do is see what's possible with QPST, in particular the eMMC Software Download App, but the user guide I have doesn't include that app and I can't find anything online that's very helpful. For the other Software Downloader app the user guide I have is badly out of date. I'm nervous of making the problem worse because QPST can be used with many different firmware configurations and can therefore do damage in cases where WDRT and WPI can't because they're Lumia specific and don't have as many functions that can cause problems.
Am I making this too complicated? Should I just go back to using Thor2 on the command line and trying lots of different Hexes, FFUs/MBNs etc?
I've got a few other things to try as well, I'll report later.
