[Q] LTE/Data on AT&T Nexus 6 on nTelos - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So. Complicated issue here, and as expected my regional carrier's staff has been less than helpful. So I have a (AT&T originally) UNLOCKED nexus 6 with Android 5.1 installed. After having it unlocked I attempted to insert my SIM from my new Moto X (2nd Gen) on the nTelos network (a smaller regional carrier that I believe generally acts as a Sprint MVNO). This was a new activation on the network the week before with the Moto X having no issues at all. After the SIM insertion into the old Nexus 6 I get only voice and text. No data. So I attempted to replicate the APN settings via the star menu and re attempted connect. Still no data. I get voice and text, and there is an exclamation right on the signal strength locator. I've read many articles reguarding MEID's and whitelisting, but I assume if it was a white listing issue there would be no service at all. And there have been many similar successes with Nexus 6 devices like mine and other carriers including sprint and verizon. As far as I can tell my APN settings are identical to the Moto X that works just fine. What am I missing here? Is it the lack of the MEID in the regional carrier database? I still feel there must be a solution especially given the fact I can make and receive calls/texts. Any one else have some similar experience? The staff at the nTelos store is less than helpful. States it just can't be done but can't explain why nor will make an attempt to solve my issues. I can post whatever info is needed. Thank you for your time.

I believe Nexus 6s purchased directly from AT&T are SIM locked to their network.

Will a Verizon X work on T-mobile?

I am ready for a new phone, but would like to be done with Verizon once they take away my unlimited plan. I read a few posts where it is said that the cdma phones would work on T-Mobile, the carrier I will be going to next. Can anyone confirm or deny the ability to use on both networks?
Thanks
Yes a Verizon Moto X will work on T-Mobile as it is SIM unlocked and supports band 4 LTE. It should be noted that it doesn't support AWS 3G which is the main band T-Mobile uses for their 3G service. If you are in a refarmed market then they will also offer 3G service on the PCS band which the Verizon Moto X does support. Most major cities are refarmed so as long as you are okay with the risk of ending up on 2G more often then you would on a T-Mobile Moto X then you should be okay. From my understanding T-Mobile is working on having almost all of their 3G service on the PCS band in order to free up AWS spectrum for LTE so this issue should become less of an issue over time.
With kit Kat on my vzw x, when I put my T-Mobile Sim in, I must manually enter T-Mobile APN settings to get working data and SMS. I haven't tried MMS.
With 4.2.2 Roms (version that the phone came with plus camera ota) APN settings came down automatically.
I get h+ in refarmed area.

It supports both. I've confirmed this with a T-Mobile SIM card and is also stated on the Verizon dev page.

Wow, that's interesting. Also interesting that the top section specifically references Band 4, yet the actual spectrum is not called out in the technical section below.
Thanks for the info. This is a surprisingly network-flexible phone... not used to that with Verizon phones.

Most of the upper level Verizon LTE phones released this year save the HTC One support band 4 either out of the box or will get a software update for it. Verizon is supposed to be making a big push over the next few months to add band 4 LTE service which is much needed here in Houston as our band 13 LTE service is so overloaded that sometimes I am lucky to top 3-4mbps.
Quite possible that Band 4 support was added in one of the updates that was pushed out, so most documentation wouldn't reference it. Best place to check would be the FCC docs when they tested the phone.

I put a T-mobile SIM in my stock 16GB Verizon Moto x. Here is what works and doesn't.
First off, 4G works! in the South Jersey area and it is Blistering fast, I have exceeded 40MB speed test downloads twice, Several in the high 30s and I am avg in mid 20s. Uploads are averaging 20+/- . Compared to Verizon this is like comparing Fios to 1999 era dial up. the best I ever got on Verizon 4G was 14 download but average between 4 and 9 !
The Network notification switches a lot between 4G, "H" mode, whatever that is, just bars and another which I didn't catch quick enough to read ?
Battery has been amazing compared to my galaxy Nexus, I got 7.5 hours of Actual "Screen on Time" which included some GPS use and an hour of music streaming total phone up time was 34+ hours. How long it will perform like this is anyone's guess, today i got about 6.5 of Screen on time. I hope this inst a trend
Now for the bad news - Using it as a Phone. Incoming calls are fine but, making outgoing is a Pain in the A$$.
When I dial a number, (which is a hassle on this KitKat dialer) it often goes to the home screen or back to the dialer. The Call Fails. I am not sure if my dialer is buggy or its a compatibility problem. the KitKat Dialer on the Moto X is an exorcise in futility. Google are you listening? Why reinvent the wheel. All I want in my Dialer is a Number Pad! and a phone book.
When I Open dialer I see Recent calls up top, the whole middle section says all contacts and is otherwise blank, the bottom has the number pad icon, History and settings dots.
Clicking the number pad icon enlarges the bottom section, which then goes all white and removes the three icons. I have to then click the back arrow and re-click the number pad icon to bring it up the actual dialer. .
At this time I can dial. and then the call always fails on the first attempt. Sometimes it takes several attempts to go through.
When I click send on the dialer the 4G disappears and I am left with just the bars. they come back when call is done but sometimes take a few minutes to do so.
If you Kill the dialer app or swipe it away, coming back to it you will have the same issues when trying to get the number pad (two attempts) if you dont, the number pad will open on first attempt. but the calls will still fail on the first try.
I also cant use the internet when in a call, whether WiFi is on or off. Is this a T-mobile problem? I could use the net in Verizon when in a call when on 4G or WiFi
The Data is set to global mode but I have tried both the other settings. On boot up I get a warning saying the SIM is not recognized which I just swipe away.
I am also having this problem. After making a call, the music player and the phones "volume" aspects cease to work., Meaning, I get no sound out of the phone, Music, notifications alarms etc.. This happens almost every time and the only fix is a reboot
I disabled all Verizon Bloat and a lot of Moto Bloat as well This could be causing some of the bugs? But i have tested several different configurations all with the same outcomes.
Hope this helps and puts an end to the - Will it work or not questions. There seem to be a lot of Net Know it all's that flat out say a Verizon Moto x wont work with a T-Mobile SIM or some other undocumented "fact"
Would a verizon sim work in a sprint or T-moblie phone?
I popped in my T-Mobile Sim card and I only get hspa+. I definitely live in a LTE area. Hmm...

im from india i got moto x navy blue customized but device wont get signal dont know whats wrong tried to reset still no luck even getting the signal but instantly disappears and showing emergency only
So, I have a Verizon Moto X and popped in my T-Mobile sim card today and LTE popped up after a few seconds (I live in Boston). My LTE speeds on the internet worked instantly. However, I tried to send a text message and it wouldn't send. Not sure if I need to do anything else to get voice/text to work fine. Any ideas?
if you're on 4.4, you need to manually add APNs

I just popped in the T-Mo sim card again and now text works no issues and calls. Not sure what happened, but oh well.
Now, is there any difference in me using a Verizon Moto X on T-Mobile compared to an AT&T Moto X on T-Mobile. I have both and have been using an AT&T one, but I am just curious.

http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090 <- That should have everything you need as far as the APN goes.

no because the sprint x is sim locked and doesn't use the same cdma setup, and the t-mobile doesn't support cdma/evdo that verizon uses for voice and 3g data

PagePlus Wireless & Cricket Wireless - Anyone used these with nexus 6?

Pageplus is CDMA Verizon MVNO
Cricket is GSM AT&T MVNO
I have an existing pageplus account for a 3g device, and may have to stay with Verizon service due to my location. Has anyone activated a Nexus 6 on Pageplus Wireless?
I also am going to try Cricket Wireless to see if I can get AT&T with an antenna. I particularly like their 20GB plan. However, when trying to purchase a sim, they want the IMEI number - I don't have it as my nexus is on order - I wanted to get the sim to have on hand when it came in. No amount of phone calls yielded anyone that could help me get a sim. One agent said to type in any combination of 15 characters so as to order. I do that and it pops up "3g only".
Has anyone successfully subscribed to Cricket Wireless?

I've been using Cricket Wireless for several months now without issue. Unlike Straight Talk I've never been mysteriously throttled mid month. I tried to order a nano SIM card too so I would be ready when my phone arrived and ran into the same roadblock. However, I did have the option of cutting down the micro SIM from my Nexus 5, so I chose to do that instead. I suppose you could go into a store with a Nexus 6 display model and copy the IMEI number.
Thanks for the reply.
Anyone else?
Cricket does work on nexus 6....have 20 GB for my son...Tried it before putting in my sons fire phone

Help ! N920I with ATT IMEI unable to update!

I bought N920I on ebay, and it is factory unlocked version. When I use the New iphone with att, it is working well, but it seems the signal is not well enough and the GPS (goole map) is not as accurate as Iphone 6 one. So I went to ATT retail store, they told me I should update my IMEI in their system so might solve the signal problem. So I just gave them my NOTE 5 IMEI, but they tried couple times and was unable to update it for me. So I went back home and called ATT customer service , they finally override the system and helped me successfully updated IMEI . I am wondering does it really matter to update IMEI when I switch from IPhone 6 to NOTE 5?
I guess I was lucky. Went in to get a new nano sim. They put in the imei # and it came up right away as the n920i!
Speeds are crazy...88 down 40 up.
That's 4x better then what I got on my Tmo Note4
The modem on international devices aren't optimized for AT&T's network. HK modems are particularly wonky outside of HK. The IMEI controls features (EG: visual voice mail) on AT&T. The SIM talking to the network negotiates LTE and types of access (EG: tablet SIMs don't do voice and text when inserted in a phone). AT&T uses the SIM to determine what's acessible (EG: voice, LTE). Foreign phones aren't recognized by AT&T because their IMEI's aren't in AT&T's database. I have an international tablet with voice and text so AT&T picked a dummy IMEI to associate with it so I could get visual voice mail. Bottom line is any wireless performance issues you're experiencing are caused by the phone and network settings won't change that. Welcome to gray market phone ownership.

Can't Activate Note8, fails on configuration with Sprint & Boom Mobile

Hi Guys, I'm wondering if someone more knowledgeable can help advise. I've spent 12 hours and cant activate my Unlocked Qualcomm Note8 on any of my service providers (SMN-950U1.)
I want to use it on Boom Mobile Red (Verizon MVNO)
I cant get the Network Operator to configure, when I select Verizon it fails on configuration. I'm not referring to APN because I do not even get calls, the Operator is listed as "Emergency Calls Only". The Sim works perfect on my Pixel XL and iPhone 7 Plus. This phone was purchased unlocked form Samsung direct with clean IMEI. I called Samsung and they have no idea, they said the phone is defective, which I believe it is not.
I had an issue activating with Sprint and still have not had Data working, though I was able to get calls. I've given up w/ Sprint and will upgrade that line with a iPhone X.
I inserted my friends Verizon Post Paid Sim from his Moto Mod phone and everything was perfect (calls, TM, LTE calling) and the phone got LTE+. Is it possible the Note8 unlocked will only work with the big 4 carriers, ST and TW? I read a similar issue people from Boost Mobile have when they insert their sims it says invalid Sim. I really have no idea what is going on - Boom doesn't have many customers and their support team has never delt with this issue, they said the phone is defective. Has anyone been able to use a Unlocked Note8 on Boom? I've tried flashing various variants of firmware, including Verizon with no success. I'm puzzled with what is going on.

Enhanced 4G LTE Mode "in" Mobile Network setting, and CDMA-1xRTT instead of LTE in Mobile voice network type in SIM Status

So, my wife and I have had two of these phones, Moto G6 phones, for about 4 years. And in that time, they've worked great using the Straighttalk (verizon) network. Recently though I switched to the Mint network because they said my phone was compatible ... even though it looked to me that they were a GSM. They also indicated I was in a great 4G coverage area. But, Coverage was terrible. I couldn't place calls in MANY of the neighborhood locations I used to be able to with straighttalk. And, other people said they would call me and they would never hear my phone start to ring. Nor did mine ever show I missed their calls. It was difficult but I finally got my phone switched back to straighttalk. But ever since then I have found that I can't place a call or text out in places I used to be able to. This has been going on for a few months.
Recently I was comparing my phone screens to my wife's and found two items that are different, when I think they should be the same.
In mobile network settings my phone does NOT show Enhanced 4G LTE Mode whereas my wife's does. It's simply not on my screen of information.
Also, in my SIM Status, my phone indicates the Mobile voice network type is "CDMA-1xRTT" whereas my wife's simply says LTE.
Are either of these two settings responsible for my not getting good calling service, and if so, is there a way to change my settings to hers? There is nothing I can see anywhere that I can change in all my settings that seems to effect this.
Do you think doing a factory reset my get me back to Enhanced 4G LTE Mode? I vaguely recall that the Mint sim was making some kind of changes to my phone.
Any other ideas?
Mint is obviously a GSM network since it's based on T-Mobile, and it works quite well on my G6, unlocked and bought from Motorola directly.
If you have a Verizon phone (which that CDMA-whatever talk sounds like), then you're going to need to stick to Verizon most likely. I have no idea if there is a Verizon specific G6, but I bet there is. RedPocket has Verizon options also if you are looking at cheap MVNOs.
And of course, using an MVNO you need to make sure your APN is right.
