So Google introduced us with their new project in Android called doze which is supposed to improve battery life while phone screen is off. While this is amazing I tried to test how long does it take for decide to go into deep sleep mode and the result was amazing. Check out this picture.

Phone took only 3 seconds to go into deep sleep which is amazing!
Thoughts on this?
P.s can someone who's on lollipop or kitkat do the same test so we can see reassemble results with one on M?
Doze it's not about how fast device enters deep sleep. It's about how often it's going to be woken up while in deep sleep. When you leave your device unattended, it will still be woken up periodically to sync and perform background tasks. But the longer the device is unattended the time between those wake up periods will increase. There was a graph presented at Google IO if you need more info.

I'm gonna test that as well, I'm gonna put my device under my pillow and in the morning I'll see how much it went out of deep sleep then post results here

Oh and yeah it indeed does help get in deep sleep faster as it is using sensors to check if device is in motion, if its not it goes into deep sleep faster. And I remember on older androids that it needed almost a minute to get into deep sleep so your argument is not completely right
These are results when I turned off my device but I shaked it.
Device entering deep sleep is not a key point of doze. It's about how many times it'll get awaken when not touched. Number of wake ups will decrease automatically from hour to hour. While on previous android wake up frequency is pretty much the same from hour to hour while screen is off. If you wanted to provide relevant data you should get 2 devices having the same setup but different android version, let it sit for at least 6 hours and then compare number of wake ups.

Yeah it's not key point but it indeed is enchantment which will impact battery life. I have one device with ice cream sandwich and I'll compare them.
Won't it be a small margin of savings? since the accelerometer is consistently being powered to measure for the device position.
It'll be interesting to see some ultra low power accelerometer being used for this.
Don't put it under the pillow...don't want the battery accidentally exploding Lol
I found doze today to be unreliable. It works...sometimes...and the other times in the same situation. I still loose like 1-2% in 30 minutes standby (I'm using sync and location services).

That's not how it works. It's not constantly powered
As google said, ...it detects patterns in ussage....and then it starts working.

Can you explain little bit better
You should watch Google I/O, they said how it works.

Basically it said it learns your usage pattern. For instance, if you use your phone in the morning before work, at lunch time, and then again at night time, it will use that information to learn when and how often to wake the phone. It figures it won't need to wake the phone throughout the day if you never check it between the hours of 9:00 and 1:00. At least, that's how it seemed to me. It said push notification, alarms and other notifications don't change at all.
Untill i see the results, i will not get my hopes UP, remember, doze only acts when the device is not charging and is left (by left, its left on a table, where it dosent move, if the phone is moving it will not count, as far as i understood), however (For me atleast) the only time my phone is not moving is when im sleeping (its always with me, either im using or not), however when im sleeping, the phone is charging.
in fact its probably thats why they showed a nexus 9 number, instead of the nexus 6 even tho it is the one with complaints regarding battery life(atleast on stock kernel)
I Know for some people it will be usefull, but i doubt its going to be for everyone, or the majority of them
Watch the keynote. Skip to the android section (although the intro was amazing, I could have gone but I had too much work!! Ugh)
Anyways. It takes a few moments for the sensors to detect a pattern of stillness. So I suppose there is a set time for the sensors to be polled...and of the results come back as "idle" several times in a row then it goes into doze...and once the pattern is broken it wakes up, scans, syncs, and then checks if it needs to go into doze again.

Agree. My nexus 5 is always with me unless its evening or at college which it's summer break, plus I'll be starting clinicals so its gonna be useless on the jobsite. Seriously google should implement something that learns how apps are used, what to sync and what not to etc...they have so much info from Google now, why not make a system like now except for apps.

I Agree, a system like Windows Phone or iOs,its sad to compare the same HW and see its windows phone counter part have oficial double battery life on standby (im talking about htc one m8, but we all know it applies for every android phone)
So, say you work as a construction worker, but don't use your phone and because of that, it should be in a "idle" state, but it can't doze because of it being moved around.

Hello,
i have a bad problem with my LG starting from day one when i bought it. I tried many things now, to no avail.
The problem is that sometimes my battery falls from high percent value to 0 just in one second. then the mobile goes out and i have to charge it, even it was nearly full some minutes ago.
Another problem is a warm mobile in standby mode when i have mobile inet active, and battery wont last longer than 4 hours. With WIFI it doesnt get warm but starts to decerase RAM until the mobile is unusable (timeouts, freezes, ect)
So there are 3 problems, i think related together somehow:
1. sudden Akku drainage, falling from high percent value to zero
2. fast akku drainage with mobile inet on, doesnt fall from #to zero, but get used up very fast
3. Unusable mobile due to RAM issues when WIFI activated.
Here are following some pics and a Log attached from Android Stats. Here you can see starting at 9.34 the bettery recalculations, in very short timeframes.
Can someone see any issues from the log what could be the problem?
The situation was like this: I recharged yesterday evening, and turned mobile inet on. Then i went to sleep. In the morning i saw that i had no connection to google servers (icons white instead on green) but i saw the battery was only drained 2% over night so i thought not bad.
I reactivated internet (mobile) in hope to get conn to google servers. Well, i got it but in same time the battery got drained from 98% to just 40% in one second. Since then the mobile stays warm. I have auto sync deactivated.

I forgot:
Android 2.3.4 original, rooted but nothing changed on firmware/rom/baseband/anything
So i inserted screens now.
you have some kind of background application that doesnt let your phone enter deep sleep mode to lower cpu frequency and conserve battery (phone is awake when screen is not on, you can see the activity in the pictures). you should check what app is using most of the CPU time, it might not be code optimized and might be sucking too much of the battery.
also, it might help resetting the battery stats, search a bit and find some info on that (short version, charge it to 100%, let it for another hour plugged in, go in CM, delete battery stats, restart).
worst case scenario, your battery is busted and a replacement might be needed. hope that helps.
andrei.je said:
just a hint : most battery consumption can be checked in the battery stats, on the activity graph : awake vs screen on - if awake and screen on are not synced in the activity graph (should have same lines) then you have a problem. meaning when your phone has its screen off it should go into deep sleep mode (lower cpu frequency) but if you the phone is awake while screen is off, you have an application installed that won't let your phone sleep and just keeps using the cpu and sucking the battery.
this is mostly applied to standby battery life, if you are playing a game/watching a movie, doesn't really matter screen is on, cpu/gpu is sucking the battery.
my worst battery life while i had the O2X was about 16h, but that's with normal phone use (no games - you can have a psp for that, no music - you can have an ipod for that), mostly emails, browsing, IMs, calls/texts all day long also best battery life was 2d 10h (mostly on standby)

Thanks for also answering my post on the other topic.
It may be that theres an app that keep our phone from sleep, but even with this app, when i dont turn on wifi or mobile internet, the mobile runs 6 days straight. This is no joke, offline it could hold 6 days, i have a screen of where it looses 8% in 28 hours. And as you can see on my screen, it happens from one second to the other.
I already changed the phone the third time now, even with very few installed apps, this remains. I had it first time on day one when bought th mobile. Since then in all 3 mobiles maybe 15 times.
Anyway, it bothered me, but not as much as that the phone went nearly unusable with internet active. Always at 50 mb ram. So it was basically an offline only phone. In my 2 tests, both 5 days without internet, the mobile neither went slow, nor went off, nor lost battry, nor anything. Very fast LG OS. Until internet...
Anyway, now i installed Chuck Norris CM /MIUI ROM, lets see what happens. Until now its so smooth and soft, it feels like a complete other mobile. Also with wifi active... but i cannot say anything until tomorrow.
I tested already a lot of System Analyzer apps but theres really not much to see. Nothing seem to use much battery in whole. At least nothing that explains a loss of 70% in 5 seconds.
I posted a log here, thats the best thing to see i guess, but i cannot really read it well :-(
Anyway, your help is appreciated

I think the problem is caused by the battery stat file. Avoiding the techinical causes you should only charge the phone untill 100% and using battery calibration (you can donwload it for free from market) calibrate the battery! Hope to be helpful ^_*

Hello !
I just bought my P880 two days ago and everything is great except one thing: battery drain. It is not occouring in background when phone is in Deep sleep, it doesn't lose charge while it's sleeping, but when I just unlock it/start using it, it just starts draining.
I have rooted it, and unrooted using SuperSU. The thing is I haven't experienced that kind of drain yesterday, it was working fine except drain caused by bad signal (badly inserted SIM).
Usage by Android System is at 50% over 5 hours, Screen is at 9%. Awake graphs are the same as Screen on graphs- no wakelocks.
I have these apps installed:
Prey Anti Theft
Skype (not running)
Adobe Reader
SoundHound
Disco Light
QR Droid
Sygic (not running)
X-plore
SwiftKey 3 keyboard
WiFi, GPS, Data, everything turned off except mobile signal
Running Internation version with Android 4.0.3, Kernel 2.6.39.4-00001-g0f9182c
Mobile network type is EDGE:2 with mobile signal -70dBm
I'm first time android user and this is my first problem so I tried to include as much info as possible.
Thanks in advance
I see 2 mayor issues, first is the android deft app, it may be running and trying to sync but bcz the data is off it will try to connect foreva.
Also, edge is (in other words) ROAMING and this forces the antenna to use more power to get signal from another provider, it get worst if you have a phone with sim card.

Thanks for pointing that out, but I have disabled every sync and I have set phone to 2G mode only, the reason is that UMTS signal was low and was draining battery even more.
I am only losing sharge when just doing random things on phone, even if that means only adding/removing widgets/apps on main screen with WiFi off.
Then you must try the Deodexed version of v10f, removing the bloatware with the script in the same thread.
The issue may be some lg apps that are running in the background so doing this will have 6 hours in standby time with 100% still, like me (if I turn all radios off ).
I have just woken up, while sleeping (9h) phone was awake for about 50%, no wakelocks but there were 30 alarms from Android/Google maps ans 29 alarms from com.google.android.gsf
Hope this helps.
I may try custom ROMs if nothing else works.
While typing this message I have lost 7%.
Similar state here as the OP. Got the phone two days ago.
All is good, it rooted OK, Directory Bind works fine, phone runs like hell (about 10 times faster than my old Galaxy S) BUT it drains battery like a genuine power guzzler.
Ok I get that according to the performance you get, it comes with an accordingly high power draw, so I don't ***** about it, I just want to know if this is normal. I mean I played 2 hours and 15 minutes of Sprinkle and the battery died, starting from a full charge. Screen was set at 50%.
GPS is off, Bluetooth is off, no 3G mobile network and screen is at 50% brightness as I said. There's an NFC icon on the notification bar next to the battery icon, which I am not sure if it should be there.
Here are a couple of shots from the battery section of the phone and from Battery monitor widget if these help.

Please note that as the OP said, the phone consumes nearly nothing when idling. Firmware is 10f.
PS I am not trying to hijack the OP's thread. I just noticed the same behavior and I'd like some help on the same matter, as well as to contribute in whatever way I can. If the OP is offended somehow, I will gladly start a new thread.
@psolord No, not offended at all. I'm glad you posted actually.
My phone has encountered 20 more Alarms, wake ups since I left it standing:
com.google.android.apps.maps Wakeups: 50
com.google.android.gsf Wakeups: 45
You can see pictures below, the drop on the second picture happened when I was writing me previous post from P880.
- I am also rooted again (after factory restore)
- I have reenabled 3G networks but the signal is only at about 50%.
Any additional info please ?
Ok buddy, so we can keep discussing it here together.
For the matter at hand, I see the same behavior, when I unlock the screen, it's like I have opened a whole in the battery.
It dropped from 85% to 65% just from downloading a new map (500MB, 20min download on a slow wifi) from Sygic downloader. I mean this can't be right, right?
I also checked cpu spy and it reports the system 75% at deep idle, 15% at 51Mhz and the rest are 0% to 1% up to 1500Mhz. So if the cpu has so little operation, what on earth is draining the battery?
I wonder if we could be looking at a bad battery batch.
Is there an app that reports exactly what activity consumes power and how much?
Indeed, the hole in the battery.
I even restored to factory from recovery mode since I screwed up the root, so it was just stock, but guess what, nothing has changed :crying:
I really hope this can get fixed, else I'll get a replacement.
I hope someone from this forum with more experience can help :/
I think I am onto something.
Can you please check how is the phone doing if you disable everything under location and services?

I am going to try this, I am also talking to LG Support right now. WIll let you know when I get more information.
I disabled everything, and I didn't see pretty much any improvement. LG Support suggested me to return the phone.
Pretty much draining the battery atm so I can charge it back to 100% and use something like Battery Calibration. Maybe it can change something.
Yeah indeed I was onto nothing. Nothing changed for me either.
Playing 30mins of a 720P resulted my battery dropping from 62% to 50%. I also used the gps for the first time with Sygic (Jesus even the GPS is lightning fast) and the battery went from 50% to 30% for a 20 minute ride. It seems that my phone cannot give me more than 2 hours of use. That's just silly.
BTW do you or anybody, know of an app that can show battery usage per app?

Stock application ?
Also you can use Better Battery Stats to see if there are any wakelocks or anything is waking up the phone etc.
What is happening right now is rather strange, I disabled screen turning off (trying to drain battery to 1%/2%) looking at stock battery app, it seems to be stuck at 21% and it's not changing.
The stock application does not do so much analysis, but the batterystats you used above seems more like it.
I am getting panicked and I miss some stuff haha. Ok lets cool.
It makes me sad that we don't get any input from the community. Something like "yeah this is normal, live with it" or "your phone is faulty, take it back to the shop for a replacement" or something.
Agreed, ANY, ANY kind of input would be appreciated, but I guess we are getting none.
I am going to fully charge it today, do some stuff and report back tommorow. Also anyone, please do post any suggestion you may have.

Maybe this has to do something with the built in power saver. Maybe it kicks in when the battery drops to the 20s and stops whatever is draining it.
I am thinking trying some battery saver to see if it does the same thing but from the beginning of the full charge.

Actually I have disabled it when it asked me if it should turn on. So I guess nothing to do with that.
I am going to backup now, fully unroot and somehow get it to pure stock. Than I'm probably going to exchange the phone in case battery life doesn't change.
Hi Guys. I posted this in other forum, and been an XDA member I thought, why not posting this here also, although I know that what I'm posting here most of you have already discovered or worked with it, but just in case you haven't or maybe it can help other newbie member looking for an answer.
So here it's just as I posted it in the other forum (Sorry for those of you that have read it over there).
Some of you won't even read this thread completely, some others maybe interested to know what I've done in the past couple of weeks to have the great battery life I'm getting right now, for the past couple of days, after I finished making all the adjustments I'm getting 6.50 - 7+ hours of screen time, twice as much as I was getting with my S4, 1.25+ more than I was getting during the days I used the M8 (no longer with me), so for those of you interested I decided to give you some hints and explained in details what I've done. Please remember that this is solely based on my needs and phone usage, so you do the adjustments that you think can fit your needs and leave the others as default.
Brightness and Display - I adapted myself since my S2 to use low brightness, I can say that about 20%, I only use the Auto option when I need it, but most of the time been at Home or at the office I don't need the brightness too high. I'm using Adapt Display after 1 year using Normal Mode in my S4, just for trying, so far it's good this way for me. My Screen Timeout is 1 minute, But if you don't need it on that long just leave it as default.

Bloatware - From the Samsung Apps I just left on of S Health, Smart Remote, Calendar and Memo, before disabling S-Voice (Just in case) I disabled the Home Key Activation, then I installed the Gear manager to be able to use my Gear 2 Neo. From Google I disabled Google Play Music (It has been in the past a Battery killer, maybe is better now but I have no use for it on this phone as I have all my music on my SD card) and Google Books, but installed a lot of other Google apps (I think the rest of them, jaja). I also disabled Polaris Office as I have other Office Suites purchased. And all the T-Mobile stuff. (All of these I've noticed that run on the background draining your battery)
WiFi - I turned off the Smart Network Switch, because when I'm at home or in the office, connected to my wifi, I move around a lot and I stay at wifi range edges a lot, so this feature can be switching on and off constantly and it will cause battery drain. then I turned off Network Identification as I don't need this, and one thing I have learned, at least in my case is that leaving the Wifi on all the time drains the battery a lot, so I changed the "Keep Wi-Fi on during Sleep" option to Only when Plugged in. I'm at T-Mobile, so I have the wifi calling feature, it's great but I leave it off until I need it.
TouchWiz features - I love TouchWiz, for me all the others Android Skins are plain and boring, so I use a lot most of it's features, but I just turn them on only when needed, there's a reason why we have those Toggles there, so I edit them and rearrange them in the order I want so I have it available when I need them. The only options I leave on all the time are the Motions and Gestures and Air View, because I use them all the time.
Location - Just like I mentioned above, I just turn this on when needed, and even then just select if you can use the Power Saver mode. Also, I don't need Location reporting, but I do use the Location history for my Google Now and other Google Apps.
Google Now - Be sure the Location settings are in order with the above and I disabled the "OK Google" default feature as by it's nature, this is all the time on and "listening" waiting for the command.
Ultra Power Saving Mode - Great feature that I turn on every night while I sleep, in 7+ hours activated it has used only 1 % of battery.
Developer Options - Well this is something that I don't know exactly how it affected but for me it did something, let me explain, I decided to give it a try to the ART option on the Runtime System, I heard that for some it helped with the battery and performance so I did it, well it took a long time after it rebooted, and it took almost 1GB of my System memory just by doing this change, but I tried it for a day, after I saw that I didn't see any difference I could notice other than most available ROM, with Dalvik it was always using 1.40-1.5 of the 1.81 GB, with ART it went down to 1.1 and after 1 reboot I saw going to 1GB, so I like that, but, I began having the No-Response power button that some people have reported when trying to wake up the device I decided that I was going back, well, in a summary, it went back to Dalvik a lot quicker, I got my 1GB of Memory back, and for my surprise the ROM usage is lower than before, when I got the phone and until I did this, it was never lower than 1.4GB, but now after switching back I'm getting 1.2 most of the time. So I'm guessing that switching to the other one and back cleared some other stuff that was there by default. Why I'm letting you know this, well, immediately after I switched back to Dalvik I began noticing better battery life (I'm talking since Friday), it may be just a coincidence maybe not, but it won't hurt trying it if you don't find any other solution.
Well, that's all I can remember for now, if I remember something else I will post it as a follow-up, so I hope that this can be of some help to some of you new to Android and maybe some of you that are not new to Android but new to Samsung Galaxy line and are a little lost on how to have a better battery life.
For now, here it's my last Battery Stats, before I re-charged yesterday morning, I'm still at that Full Charge now, In full use now that I'm back at work and my Car Bluetooth connection and my Gear 2 Neo, so this afternoon I will have a better idea, but as of now I still have 33% battery left after 22hrs 48 mins on battery and 4h 38m Screen On time, so it seems to be going strong for 7 hrs of screen on time.
Google Now
Which of the location settings do I need on for Google now to still work? I wanna try to keep all the google now functionality enabled. I had pretty bad battery life my first full day with the phone. (I cant post imgur links since I'm new here). but basically my "Awake" bar on the battery history was solid blue all day. Phone died after about 13 hours of being on and 2 hours of screen time. Android OS and Android System took up the majority of my battery. The phone was awake the entire day and I couldnt figure out why. I turned off the wifi settings as you mentioned above and disabled as much of the samsung crap as I could find. I do leave location on all the time, but on "Power Saving" mode, not sure if thats making a huge difference.
Any input is appreciated.
Looks fine but I get 7 hours of screen time on auto brightness but set to a couple of notches below Centre. And screen mode on pro, for natural colours. The other things seem logical, though ultra power saving mode for night time seems a bit extreme. I have it on normal and it uses about 4 per cent overnight.

Ultra Power Saving Mode while I sleep doesn't hurt anything, anyway, I won't be using the phone all night, once I wake up I turn it off immediately and everything goes back to normal, so no harm.

Exactly as you see in the picture, I have Google Now working and finally my Screen On Time is greater than Android System and OS.

Great, thanks a lot. I am gonna try these settings and see how it goes. I was a little disappointed before, but hopefully these can right that. I do like the location history, but not if its drains my battery like that.
S5 doesn't consume much battery at night, between 1 and 3% percent max as i have noticed without Ultra Power Mode.
You gave good tips for optimisation to those who haven't done that yet.
I suggest people to install Juice Defender as it will disable data and renable it only when screen is on or every xx minutes it's off (it makes a big difference on LTE networks now).

I get what you mean, but my case was more like 4-5% lost overnight, so losing just 1 with ultra power saving mode saves me 3 to 4% that I can use later on the day for about 15 more minutes of screen on time, and again, I'm not using the phone while sleeping so I don't see the need for not using the Ultra Power Saving Mode.
Follow up, I just arrived at home and even when I didn't get the 7 screen on time that I thought I'd have, I ended with 6 hours. My phone usage while working is very different than when I'm at home, plus connected receiving emails by the dozens, using Calendar, memo and other working stuff, plus the Mobile signal is at the borderline of bad, and it switches a lot from LTE to 4G and vice versa so getting 6 hours of screen time on over 30 hours on battery after a full day of work where my S4 was giving me not even 4 hours is really great and it keeps amazing me.
Thank you!
So far today I'm at 1 hour of screen time, my awake bar is now only solid when the screen is on and I'm at 87% battery with the phone unplugged for 3 hours. Finally Android OS and Android System are much lower, thanks a lot!!!! I just changed the wifi advanced settings and the location settings.
Sir.
Im having the non-responsive power button issue. ot took me a lot of uninstalling to some apps(greenify and gravity screen) now using gravity with no problem. dont want to test greenify though. but that problem was really a big issue. I couldnt even make the power button work.
Do you know if this is some kind of software issue or hardware problem?

I think its great and all, but honestly.. except for bloatware, I have everything on. Google now included. GPS ALWAYS on. brightness to max. the fact is, our phones come packed with great features and I bought it for most of them, I don't want to lose them to get some extra battery life.. and you know why? Because with everything still on I get over a day easily with heavy use still. Back in the day with my EVO, sure I wanted some battery saving tips because I couldn't make it a day. If I forget to charge my phone now, I'll wake up and still have close to 30% left, a quick ride to work charging it and boom, back to over 50% and that'll be just fine even with heavy use.
After all that said, we have removable batteries for a reason! and nothing beats having an extra one just in case.
Anyway, my opinion but I guess this whole battery squeezing more tips is like the Prius's drivers coasting to stop signs and red lights from a mile away to save an extra 2mpg

Hey I figured I shared my experience here since I also had a massive battery drained from android system. I am rooted but u can still try this to attempt to stop the darn android system. here is what worked for me. I charged my phone 100% then I left my phone on full power save mode. Here is what I found out....my android system wouldn't go below 26%....after 6 hrs of full sleep now is at 18% and im not getting any wakelocks....ill post my screen shots...

I have found that on mine too, and controlling which apps were using location & how frequently helped a lot. Life360 was my worst offender by far. If I toggle off location the usage flat lines and Screen stays as top power user.
I have ended up uninstalling life360 and leaving location on.

I love pretty much everything about this phone and can't imagine it being much better. One of the reasons I bought it was for the famed battery life. Most blogs and battery tests put it at just over the Z3 and one of the longest lasting phones out there.
However, that hasn't been my experience. I'm an Android veteran and I know how to look for battery drains and what generally causes them. I'm losing a lot of battery at idle and there doesn't seem to be any reason. Nothing shows up in the battery stats. I even tried stamina mode and the results were worse. I lost 20% over 11 hours without even touching the phone. It just sat there and lost 1/5th of the battery. Not quite 2%/hr, I know, but still significant for a phone in stamina mode and not being used.
The only thing that shows up in the battery stats are the usual suspects: Android OS and Android System. I don't have a weak LTE signal or anything.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing fairly significant battery drain, especially idle drain. My battery life isn't horrible, but it should be a whole lot better from what I was reading before I purchased the phone.
Apologies for asking obvious questions, but are things like wifi, mobile date, auto-sync, bluetooth and NFC toggled on or off? Are certain apps repeatedly appearing in the Consuming Apps list? I tend to make sure I swipe these away which has helped when I've had similar excessive battery drain, for me these are (for example) Reddit Sync and Google Docs. It is weird that they don't appear to be high in the battery usage % list though...

Wifi, mobile data, auto sync, and Bluetooth are on all the time, as they are on all of my smartphones. These are not the cause of the drain I'm experiencing. If you leave all of those off all the time, there's no point in having a smartphone. NFC is off.
As stated, there is nothing in the app drain listing to cause alarm. Nothing in the battery stats is telling me I have an issue, which is why I'm frustrated.
Fair point, though I personally toggle them on and off as needed.
How any apps do you have installed over and above those bundled? I'd try uninstalling as much as possible then reinstalling then one by one. Or a less extreme option could be to clear cache in as many apps as you can, reboot and see if the drain stops.
I have everything enabled except Google Now and I lose about 0.2% per hour when idle. Also, I believe all the folks who are reporting battery life of 2 days with 6 hours SoT must be having very low idle drain.
So greyhulk I think your experience is not the norm, but unfortunately don't know how to help. Post up some screenshots of your battery stats.

When you look a the battery History details, do you see a lot of awake time? Also look at the top 3 or 4 items in Battery usage individually, do they show high amounts of Keep awake time while the phone is idle? A wakelock or poor cell signal are the two main causes of high idle battery drain.

It's definitely not poor signal. There is a bit of wake time, but the top 3 items are screen, android OS, and Android system. The wake time on those is not significant, either.

I'm about the same. I'm getting on average 7 hours on screen daily with everything on, no stamina mode, over 70% brightness. I left my phone unplugged for the first time overnight and it drained a whopping 1%! I've had the phone for over 2 weeks now.

Sorry to hear about your battery issues, but as mentioned, that's not the norm. Not sure how much help I can be, but I can tell you your Android System and OS percentages are about 2-3 times higher than mine so that seems related to the drain, but tracking down the culprit will be tricky. Have you considered factory resetting?

Here's are a couple screenshots for comparison:
when Android OS and/or Android System drain more than cell standby and phone idle you can rest assured that an app or service is draining your battery.
Many things can be disguised as Android System (/OS). It could be google now, location services, syncing of google drive, browser sync or an app running it's own service etc.
Android system and Android OS always drain 2-5% of a battery on all of my devices. However I turn on wi-fi and other stuff only when needed. Plus I have all the google services, google voice and account sync disabled.
But I wasn't happy with the battery life on my Z3c also. Cell standby, phone idle and 1-2 ours of screen time drained the battery almost in 24 ours. Maybe it was one-time occasion (I haven't had much time to test it since the phone is new), but I starting to have a bad feeling

That seems highly abnormal, I leave wifi, mobile data, and GPS on at all times, with numerous accounts syncing, yet battery life has been superb for me and many others.
It's been a few hours since I posted that screenshot from my previous comment, but my battery has dropped a mere 2% to 35% and my on screen is now at 5h20m. That's the drainage I've been typically experiencing with daily heavy usage.

I'm not going to factory reset a phone a few days after I took it out of the box and set it up. That's ludicrous. It's set up exactly the same as several of my previous Android devices, none of which had this kind of drain.

As an aside, how are you showing the Android L on screen buttons?

Factory reset is the lazy answer and should only be a last resort, especially when the device had only been active for a few days.
That would be like telling someone to format their computer every time it slows down a little.

A factory reset at the very start is the best time to do it, rather than wait weeks, months from now when it would really be cumbersome, but anyway, you do whatever you think will help. I already tried offering help and you were pretty rude about it so I'm done.

You're kidding, right? Two days out of the box, I have every account set up, all of my music downloaded, all of my apps set up, and my interface tweaked to be the way I want it. It's not any easier now than it will be three months from now. There's also the fact that the device shouldn't run this way out of the box.
Whenever there's a battery thread or a person asking for help on this forum because they have a weird drain, there are two predictable responses that will be offered almost immediately:
Turn everything off - Yes, if you toggle everything off, you'll get good battery life, but then why even have a smartphone? Most modern smartphones are capable of getting decent battery life with all radios on all the time. This is not a solution.
Factory reset - I work in I.T. If I told someone to wipe their computer every time they reported an issue, I'd be out of a job. That should be an absolute last resort. I could see it on a phone that you'd been using for months that suddenly had battery issues and you couldn't figure out what the cause was, but a phone that has been set up less than a week? Please.
These kind of offered solutions aren't helpful, yet they're always the first ones offered. It has been this way since I took it out of the box on day one. So, it either it doesn't like one of the apps I installed from the get go, or it has another issue, or is defective. I mainly posted this thread to see if others were having my experience and a few have confirmed that they are.
So, I'm sorry if you're butt hurt, but I certainly wasn't trying to be rude. I was just disregarding a solution that I predicted someone would offer that is not an option at this point (and really shouldn't be). Anyway, thanks for trying, I guess. Just please be aware that if someone comes here looking for help, they're doing so because they don't WANT to wipe their phone or turn off all of its features. They're looking for an alternative solution. Even newbies know enough to wipe their phone when things aren't working right and it's the last thing they want to hear if they ask for assistance.

Actually without having the phone in hand there is little anyone can do to tell you what is draining the battery, the suggestions given are typical of tech support help if standard things don't work. So you can either take those suggestions or do more research since you have the phone in hand and find the problem. Based on the information given there really is no magic answer to help you.
Hey guys, I'm wondering what can I do to improve my Note 8 battery life. Seems to me that is draining and I do not get the chance to use it too much. Maybe you have an idea how to optimize and track the apps are overusing the battery, so far I was not able to detect which app/component drains my battery. Even Samsung seems that doesn't know since there is no message regarding background processes with heavy usage.
Basically I finished fully charging at 9:15 AM and now 16:15PM time I started to write the post and make the screenshots, it has 16%. What I did all this time with the phone, was:
- a bit of browsing,
- make one NFC payment,
- have the S3 gear connected on bluetooth.
- few twitter messages and viber really small usage. (less than 40 messages overall)
So here are my settings
- WIFI is off and I'm using 3G connection (I stopped LTE thinking that requires more battery.. , correct me if I'm wrong please),
- screen not even on 50% and auto brightness off (using HD+ and a dark theme, everything is so dark!)
- AOD
- no led, no gestures (most of them I turn off for testing purpose)
- Medium battery saver on.
- No phone calls
- few notifications (not more than 20, also the notification is optimized to apps I'm concerned)
Any suggestion how to make it to end of working day .. at least?
I was waiting so long for a new note and now I'm a bit disappointed and I hope that is something I do wrong..
Funny is I just realized that by mistake I put the phone on airplane mode while making the screenshots, still percentage was flying away even like this. I lost 2% making screenshots in a matter of couple of minutes.
Please find the screenshots attached in the link down bellow, were to big to add them to the post.

Thanks!
you might have some apps draining battery. I'm used to a rooted phone, so I'd always check with wakelock detector, but I'm not sure what you can do without installing an app as a system app.
Try factory resetting your phone and using it without installing anything for a day and see what the battery life is like. If it's significantly better, install your apps 1 by 1 until you find out which one is causing unnecessary cpu cycles or wakelocks.

But I wonder, I shouldn't see the heavy usage on the battery info page? Like which app does most of the usage and time spend in the background or CPU?
I had excessive battery drain, about 10-11% an hour with every off . A full factory reset cured the problem.
What's your screen on time usage? 5-6 is probably the normal amount you would get with most phones (This is the most important thing if nothings draining the battery). And yes, it seems you might need a factory reset.

You won't always see this as it could be a byproduct causing a kernel wakelock.
Either way, something is acting incorrectly. The only way to really figure it out is to start over and try things slowly till you find out what it is.
For instance, on my nvidia shield tablet k-1, I was getting horrendous battery life on every single rom, stock or AOSP/Lineage. I found that I was getting 30% wakelock killing ~20% battery life per day when it should be sub 5%. I found that wifi was causing these kernel wakelocks and setting wifi to be disabled with the screen off unless charging fixed the issue entirely.
Now, that anecdote likely has nothing to do with what you're experiencing, but note that you can usually find out what's wrong from trial and error.
I've had my note 8 for 6 days now, and battery life is excellent, i mean i have wi-fi and 4g lte on all the time, bluetooth on all the time, sync with 3 emails, Facebook, weather widget, weather screen refresh every 30mins, location high accuracy, edge lighting, aod schedule 7pm-7am, was 100% at 6am, played games on it lots, used the phone 2x, 1 hour call and a 30 mins call, text messages, it's 130pm and I'm at 55%, try a factory reset then log in to your gmail then just try to update the phone if there is any. Then reboot then start installing your apps. If it doesn't work call carrier customer service and complain about the battery not holding up like some people you know who has note 8. They might replace it with a new one.

Phone died 15-20 minutes after I did the screenshots, so a bit more than 2 hours...
So.. yeah.. I will try a factory reset and start install all the apps bit by bit and see which one causes the troubles.. hopefully is nothing more than that.
Did you restore a backup or did you load your apps fresh from the play store?
I've had horrible luck with issues like battery life restoring from backups. I always install apps fresh.

can you translate "not great" in hours? Because I will say that mine is second after horrible.. with update done.
I will start the reset in a short while and I will test it tomorrow with minimum apps installed.. those which I really must have in a working day..
Maximum 5 hrs on wifi normally about 3-4 battery is not great on note yet....some optimalization would be nice
I use Ampere to monitor the instan drain of current. In a quiet situation (screen on, internet or tapatalk browsing, gear connected, wifi and data turned on) you should have something 200 mA drain.

Maybe some of the settings changes you're making are somehow rendering your phone less efficient.
I have the USA unlocked version and use it as it came without changing to a dark theme or turning anything off and the battery life is much better than yours.

I restored from a helium backup. My battery life wasn't good for about a week but it did last all day down to 20-30% at the end of the day. After a week it has improved maybe due to apps updating. Now I'm at 70-80% at the end of the day with moderate use. I have disabled several apps I didn't need as well.
Seems like it's hit or miss with the battery life. I see a lot of people happy and some are having problems. Hopefully Samsung might push a update to help.
Get cpu spy and verify that your devoce is going into deep sleep when off(mine wasnt at first until i froze/removed some rouge apps). Install accubattery and do a benchmark and see how your battery does. At least do 6 discharge cycles first to see an average. Also, in device maintenance, you can make all apps doze when not being used now.. this is a new feature. Add all of your apps and they get put to sleep immediately. I get 8 hours SOT this way

You dont have to use med battery saver either, just read my reply on this thread and you will be good. You may have to experiment a little to get your device to go into deep sleep when screen off. Mine didnt at first. Its on my other comment

I got back from work and my phone was at 75% that's between 9:30am and 6:30 pm. So my battery life is pretty good. I lose about 5% overnight.
I average 7hrs screen time Got 8hrs yesterday
