Ringtone Folder Disappearing - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Nexus 6 & in the last few days, my ringtone folder just disappears. It only seems to happen when I get a call from a ringtone that I have customised to a particular contact, from what I can tell. Yet when I plug my phone into my laptop, it still shows the ringtone folder as being there. But it definitely isn't showing in File Manager on my phone and I just get a very quiet 'dong' when someone rings me.
If I go into sounds, the names of all my ringtones are there, but if I press any of them, it just comes up with the same 'dong'.
Notifications are unaffected.
I have a rooted Nexus 6 running 5.1.1. I actually wiped the phone on Friday, thinking this would help and it was maybe just a glitch somewhere. All it did was wreck my phone completely to the extent I had to re download an image of 5.1.1 from Google and reflash it, as it wouldn't even boot up properly.
Has anyone else had this? I've had a read around the internet and can't see anything similar. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

no sound when receiving a message

I really love the phone except i`ve got the same problem as i did with the Diamond 1. When I receive a message the sound doesn`t go and it doesn`t vibrate but the green LED does flash. The second I turn on the screen using the standby-key it vibrates AND I can hear the ringtone. It drives me crazy. I didn`t have this problem the first couple of days I had the phone. I haven`t installed anything on the phone yet. Are there more people that have this problem?
Maybe it's a problem with other software? Does this happen directly after a hard reset? Mine plays a sound upon receiving a message...
have the same problem. but do not know if this started when i changed the melody for the message to one that is on the memory card.
have not tried hard reset yet to see f it helps
Do not store ringtones on the memory card, when the phone goes into standby it turns off the SD card interface to save power. The same goes for any programs that you want to keep running in the background when the phone goes into standby.
i face the same problem.... likely is the ROM problem..
not only that bluetooth also have some problem...
Are you using any call blocking / filtering software? Just a thought as I had the same issue after installing Magicall.
The device is as clean as a whistle
I haven`t installed any 3rd party software of any kind. I believe it is a flaw in the software. Perhaps this will be fixed a the next rom-update.
I also have this problem now. Yesterday I got an important SMS, but did know about it until 30 min later when I clicked the standby-key. The wierd thing is that this does not happen all the time. Usually I get notified within a few minutes of a new message. I do not have my sound files on the storage card. Any ideas how to solve this?
I get this problem too, and its rather annoying.. you could try setting the phone to wake on SMS, however, depending on your lock settings, it will probably wake up unlocked even if it was locked. I like my phone to be locked at all times unless I unlock manually or I get a call ONLY.
The reg key is
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\DisableSMSWakeUpEvent=0
Craig
Edit: if you go into Sound -> Notifications -> Messenging: New Text Message and ensure "Display Message On Screen" is unticked, it stays locked when a msg is received
i have this problem but with a hardreset solve my problem
Im having the same problem, ive got all the alert tones saved in the phone memory and have tried a hard reset too.
The reset improved things but still getting some messages being received without the alert sound being played, im assuming its a fault as several people are having the same trouble.
I got exactly the same
It seems that the problem only occures when you're not in the home screen. When i'm in the front (home) screen the sound works fine. But if i'm in the contact look (personalized look) its silent.
Can someone confirm this?
The same problem also with vibration....
It must be a softwareflaw, i can`t wait till HTC gives the first rom update...
Does somebody know how long it took before the first rom for the diamond 1 came available after its release?
I've only used Radio 3.44.25.27 from the new HTC Asia ROM for a day so I can't be sure, but the random problem of no audio/vibration alert that I used to face with Radio 3.43.25.19 seems to have gone away.
Having the same problem except mine plays the tone but doesnt vibrate!!!
Any news about this topic?
I had this problem also until I enabled SMS wakeup as per craiglay's post
These things should be fixed by HTC if u ask me. Workaround is great but I;ll wait till a hotfix is released

Incoming Text Message Sound Changes Spontaneously

I have searched all over for this, but cannot seem to find anyone else having this particular problem, so I am curious. Sorry if this does not apply to you.
Here we go:
First of all, has anyone else noticed that their incoming text message notification sound gets changed occasionally to the default WM one (not the SE one) without you doing anything to change it?
Second of all, if you answered yes to the above have you noticed any correlation between the sound changing and a wired headset getting plugged in?
I am curious because I have been having this problem and I think I might have found the trigger. This has happened on every ROM (R1,R2,R3,Itje's,valkery's) I have ever flashed, so I do not think that it is a ROM specific bug. I dont know how many people use the wired headset that came with the X1, but surely if this isnt a ROM specific bug I am not the only one having trouble with it.
Is anyone else having this problem?
The same thing was happening to me, I wasn't sure why it was doing that either. I guess it wasn't that big of a deal so I decided to keep the original default one. Kind of sucks that it does that. If anyone has a solution to the problem let me know!
the only time i notice this is when i remove my memory card. As i store my ringtones on there if i remove it and a text or call comes through the X1 will default to the standard one.
Once i have reinstalled the card i can select my tone again.
does this help?
glad to hear I am not the only one.
I can understand why it would do that with the memory card removed and the sound file no longer preent, but maybe that bit of information can help us find out the real issue.
I will do some digging, as I am pretty proficient with these things. Thanks for the input guys.
I noticed it used to do that on my old X1i... it wasn't that it would randomly change the sound, it was that suddenly the sound I was using would disappear! I had to re-copy the sounds back on to my phone every other week, and I had no idea why it kept disappearing
I noticed this problem on my X1 as well.
Not sure what triggered the change to default tone.

do you use a wired headset?
I've noticed the tone changing to the default "beep" when i receive a message whilst i am on a call. Then i have to manually change it back to the one i had before.
I have the same sometimes, and also my auto brightness and optical joystick settings are changed occasionally. dunno why, but it doesn't happen very often.
I had this happen the other week. I wasn't touching the phone other than having an sms conversation over the course of a few hours with the phone going into standby between sms's. All was going well with my normal sms tone and then suddenly it changed. I hadn't touched any other settings or added or removed anything. I don't know if it is related but a couple of days later, the sound went to half volume through my speaker until I rebooted.
I don't think taking out the memory card is the issue. I've had the tone saved in the phone memory so I don't think it would be affected if I eject the memory card. I'll have to test out the wireless/wired headset to see if that does anything once I get my phone back from repair. It was supposed to come in yesterday but didn't, hopefully today.
Never happened to me.
May happen due to changing the placement of the desired sms tone in the device's memory (changing the folder).
mine has just started doing this in the past week, weird....
This happens to me every time I start SKTools, it's weird.
Hi guys
it happens to me as well...
Hi
I get this too. My sound file is saved under windows folder on the device. Can not pinoint it to an act or happening on the phone which triggers it.
This has happened to me as well. I have noticed, everytime I turn the volume off, the ringtone changes.
I had the same problem..But..
I installed a trial version of panoramic phone genius and SPB MS3.01 and later replaced phone genius with SPB PHone Suite and S2U2.
Now this no longer happens. The sound would change especially after I reset the phone (turned off and then on). Now this no longer occurs. Hope this helps.

[Q] nexus one have no sound ~~help

who can help me ,my nexus one can not make any sound,
I'm not sure if i can help you.
But I'm pretty sure anyone who does needs a little bit more information.
Is your N1 rooted or not? If yes which Rom do you use?
What happened before it stopped making sounds?
I could imagine that could be usefull for people trying to help.
Make a complete wipe and see if it helps
Hi!
Initially had this issue when I bought my N1 (a store sample) and it re-surfaced a week ago. Now this is from experience only, so I'm not pretending to know whether "your N1 fails to initialize soundboard for reason X"....
Issue that I solved succesfully is this:
I had no sound from the phone speaker (no ringing, no alerts, no music) - and actually all phonecalls were also silent (and ended up rebooting the phone about 15 secs into the call). What's freaky is that I was able to play music, hear alerts, take calls etc. over my headphones!
I was suspecting something to be wrong with the ringtones from the SD card.
So before wiping your phone (even with nandroid recovery it's a b*tch of a job) try this: Reset all alert tones to some default tones (which are in the rom). Turn N1 off, remove SD & sim, then let it reboot. Then power down, insert sim, keep SD out. Reboot. You should get the tones/sounds/in-call audio back after a few tries of these combinations. You can also try unmounting/remounting the card repeatedly. Also, it may help if you have a second SD card ready (empty or without). When you get the sound back, you can again start using your custom tones off the SD card.
(I usually wipe any unused ringtones in the process, and have even removed the tones from my card, and then reinserted them on the SD, which also seems to work after a few power-down/power-up cycles.)
Sorry, it's totally "unscientific" but if you have, say, half an hour to a full hour to spare do the above and your N1 will be back on track.
Pistolero0 is right we could use a little more info. Another thing that I would like to know is can you play sound through the headphone jack or Bluetooth or is it just the phone speaker.
Uh-oh... Just when I answered, I got the same problem again. This time, it's taken me a day to cycle/recycle. I've gotten the sounds back twice, only to lose them due to a random re-boot. I'm still suspecting it's a question of the SD notifications/ringtones messing up something in the system. (Or it's due to a certain app getting installed or uninstalled.)
So, the sound sometimes comes back, sometimes doesn't.
So, I'm also asking for help on this one....
Symptoms
No in-call audio whatsoever
No audio through internal speaker (the ear-speaker)
No audio through the speakerphone-speaker (on the back)
No notification sounds, no alarm sounds, no ringing.
Music cannot play (the track doesn't seem to advance).
All audio works over bluetooth headset - I can hear notifications/ringtones/alarms, screenlock sound, and even music (winamp & stock).
However, I still cannot make a call over BT (I do hear the ringing, but the audio doesn't connect on an incoming call. Outbound calls are completely silent on BT phones as well.
No sound whatsoever over the standard plugin HF-headphones (the ones that came with the N1).
So my plea is also, how do I fix this? (Wiped & Nandroid-backuped once, but the problem resurfaced, so I don't think that's the thing, then).
EDIT: Now trying the passimg method (FRG83-->GRI40-->root-->GRJ22+SU.zip) - I guess I should have done this aways back, (like 3months ago when I got my N1) but didn't.
There we go, froyoed for a while

What a bummer... Froyo, but NO sound. [O]I guess it is a hardware thing then after all, despite all the evidence I've seen so far?[/O]
RESULTS
Some hours later am now back on rooted stock GRJ22, but still no sounds. This must then be a hardware thing - albeit one that doesn't manifest itself always.
Suspecting something is wrong with the 3,5mm plug? (Or a wire is crossed somewhere, which silences the ear-speaker and speakerphone speaker alike).
Still suffering. Anyone got an idea?
Did anyone get their problem solved?
Well I've never had this problem but can I ask you a question when you flash do you use 3X system wipe and 5X data/cache wipe because I don't really think this is hardware cause or else in theory if it is hardware the problem should stay even after a reflash unless it is consistent with something else (example every time you hit X amount of memory used, every time you hit X amount of run time, etc).
So try the 3X system and 5X data/cache and see what happens.

You mean first do the system + data/cache wipes, then flash?
By system wipe, you mean the usual reset-to-factory status kind of wipe?
And how do you proceed with the data/cache wipe? Like, with Titanium or some other choice?
Sorry for the n00biness, I try not to flash schtuff too often. Anyway, I'm going to try your suggestion out as soon as I can.
Sorry for the late reply I haven't had much free time lately but why I say system wipe I mean either use temasek system wipe (if on Amon RA) or the built in wipe system option in clockwork mod depending on your recovery. And for data/cache that is the factory reset.
Update - One Factory Servicing Later, a fix of sorts
Okay. After two weeks of consternation I walked to the service center.
6 wks later (that would be today) I got my N1 back....
Motherboard had been replaced, rigid flex had been replaced, antenna had been replaced. Warranty repairs on level 1 & level 2 had been done. Anyway, quiiiiite happy now.
And yes, I do have sound. Luckily, I was still within warranty, and will continue to be. Lovely.
(Presently going back the FRG83 - FRG83D - FRG83G - GRI40 (gingerbreak root) - GRJ22 route).

Won't stop reverting back to stupid AT&T ringtone...

I'm sure everyone hates the stupid AT&T ringtone, and if you don't you should. About once a day my phone reverts back to that abomination of a ringtone, after I have changed it to a different ringtone--one that doesn't make me want to pile drive my phone into the concrete.
It's as if it wants to spite me because I can find no apparent reason why it's doing this.. I've tried a couple of things: 1) restarting the phone and having someone call me when it starts back up (this ended up not being the cause) 2) letting it lay around for hours and then checking, which sometimes ends with relief that it hasn't chosen that satan-conjuring jingle, but sometimes not..
Anyone have any idea what in the blazes is going on?
I've noticed it happening to mine on occasion, too, for no apparent reason.
Are you using a different stock ringtone? Or one from your sd card? If you remove you're sd card for something or connect via PC, it can happen. It could also happen if you use an app that accesses your sound. For instance, it was happening to me when I used handcent messenger. It's a great app, but once I uninstalled, it stopped happening.

I was using the one called "Modular Light"--pretty sweet one... I'm not sure of any app I'm using that needs to access my sound settings.. What I'm trying now is a custom sound set that I created by going into the personalization menu.. so far today I've received 3-4 calls and it hasn't chosen enrage me with that smut.. we shall see...
Looks like you found a solution.
Mine gets reset back to the default "AT&T ringtone" sometimes, after reboots or connecting to PC via USB port -- very irritating.
Is there a way to disable the default "AT&T ringtone" using a temp root?

[Q] custom ringtone and moto g2 running Lollipop

Hi,
This is my first post on any forum and I really apologize if i am doing something amiss but please consider my problem and let me know if there is something wrong that i am doing with my phone. I am not posting this on any specific forum cause i have tried the solutions provided already and i dont know where to put this one. I am from India and just got a Moto G (2nd Generation) 2 days ago and it immediately upgraded to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop through the wi-fi. The first upgrade had some issues causing the screen to freeze and go black. I called Motorola support and they asked me to do a factory reset post which things started off fine till yesterday morning when I tried customizing the ringtone. I have tried everything, every hint provided in this forum, in you-tube and in Motorola support forums and the call centre support but to no avail.
Things I have tried:
1. Placing the .mp3 file in the Ringtones folder in internal storage and selecting the same from settings-> sound and notification -> ringtones. The ringtone plays fine on selection but doesnt play when a call comes in. The phone just beeps.
2. I have tried renaming the file. There were no spaces in the filename before but still tried renaming it. Again the ringtone plays on selection but doesnt play when a call comes in. . The phone still beeps.
3. I have tried converting the mp3 file to ogg and then placing the same file in the Ringtones folder. Same result.
4. I used a File Explorer to go to the external storage, play the file through the bundled player and set as ringtone. It shows 'set successful' but the phone still beeps when a call comes in.
5. I finally called Motorola support. They first asked me to reset once again which I did and tried all the above again. Still no luck.
6. A second support person asked me to make a new 'Ringtone' folder in the internal storage and put the mp3 file there and try. Didnt help.
7. The final suggestion was to keep the phone in safe mode for 8 hours and then restart and try. When even this didnt help I thought of posting in this forum.
Also, I observed that all the old mp3 names (of my previous trials) still being listed in the list when browsed through Media Storage even if the old files are removed from the Ringtones location (this is persisting even after multiple restarts of the phone). Surprisingly, on selection it still plays. The list gets refreshed only if i do a factory reset. I tried doing a cache reset but was unable to go beyond the 'Android in Distress' screen. Pressing the Vol Up key for 10-15 secs and then tapping the power key doesnt do anything. I tried it for more than 8 times since the morning.:crying::crying:
Please note that all my mp3 are of high quality (256 to 320 kbps) and mostly >6 MB in size. I didn't see any limits on either so haven't tried toning them down. Should I?
Please let me know if there is something wrong that i am doing or something odd with the phone? My first ever mobile phone was a small, slim Motorola (12 years ago)and i really dont want to return this one.
Could you please help me out? Sorry for the long post but just wanted to make sure I didnt miss any details.
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. I can't find anything on XDA relating to your specific, so I think it's best to ask the Moto G community if they can assist you. Please standby while we have your thread/question moved to the appropriate sub-forum for your device.
For future reference you can find your specific device forum here (bookmark/subscribe this):
Moto G (2014)
Within that section you will find a dedicated q&a sub-forum (this is where your thread is going to be moved to):

Did you perform the factory-reset from menu or from recovery?
Thanks for moving my thread appropriately.
I actually did a factory reset from inside the settings and not from the boot. It was as per the Motorola assistance personnel's advice. Should I do a reset from the boot?
I guess I offended the 'gods of mobiles' (Motorola and Google). .
My Nexus 5 which i gave to my sister in US, supposedly just took an upgrade to 5.1 and the best it does currently is restart every 20 minutes. My Motorola isn't that bad definitely but slightly annoying every time a call comes in.
The only one chugging along smooth till now is my good old S3.
Sorry, coming back to the point. I actually asked a Motorola US support person through my sister in US and he had a slightly different reply. He asked me to wait for a week with the phone (max 10 days was his words). The phone would work fine soon. He said there were some initial issues with the upgrades which iron out given some time. He just asked me to restart the phone a couple of times every day. If things didnt work out he said I could return the phone to the online site from where i got it or get it checked at a Motorola service centre for free.
I thought about it and i think i can wait for a few more days trying out other solutions.
