5.1.1 ambient display inconsistency - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else having the ambient display being inconsistent on 5.1.1 with T-Mobile. I find that most times when the phone goes into a deep sleep, the ambient display stops working. I'm stock rooted, with stock kernel and using the double tap to wake app. I'm going to disable the app temporarily to see if it makes a difference.

Its no more or less "consistent" than its always been.
Problem that you are seeing is that when its been bumped, it triggers the ambient display, then goes into a timeout for a while where the ambient display is disabled (for both notifications, as well as bump). Hence it appears inconsistent when in reality, it is just sitting in timeout.

OK, I understand. So is there a set amount of time that the ambient display stays in a 'time out' before working again. I've had the phone sit undisturbed for a few hours then pick it up and nothing happens, either double tap or ambient display. It seemed to work better when I was on Franco's kernel but thats not an option as of now unless I downgrade. Thanks for the help.

Screen dimming - requires single tap to "wake" - looking for a way to disable
So I am running a stock Sprint HTC One (Android 4.4.2, software version 5.03.651.3) and for months now (for some reason, I thought I first noticed this behavior right after 4.3 got pushed out), there is a single behavior that has perplexed me, and despite trying various configuration changes, I cannot seem to get it to resolve.
I currently have all power-saving features disabled, screen timeout set to 1 minute, automatic brightness enabled (slider, which shouldn't make any difference, is set to the middle), daydream is disabled, and developer options are on with no screen timeout while charging enabled.
What seems to happen is that after about 1 minute (also the duration set for screen timeout, which initially made me wonder), the screen (while plugged in and charging) will dim slightly, maybe about 50% of the standard brightness when the phone is actively being used, and I have to tap the screen (not the double-tap I have been reading about, which supposedly isn't even implemented yet) just once to dismiss the dimming in order to register touch input.
At first, I checked Daydream a bunch of times, enabled it, disabled it, changed settings, and it seemed to have nothing to do with it, because when I did enable Daydream, I got the real screensaver or colored screensaver that I had chosen in the options.
I then disabled auto-brightness, set the manual brightness level to minimum, maximum, and a dozen levels in between, and I still got the dimming that required a single tap to restore use of the screen and brought the brightness back up to its normal level.
I made a bunch of power saving changes, enabled, disabled, to no avail.
Three factory resets later, (tested with no installed apps) I still have the same behavior. It seems like there is a setting that is enabling some sort of screen saver (that only dims the screen to about 50% of the set brightness level, but disables interaction from the user until the screen is tapped a single time) that is dismissed with that single tap.
I've gotten used to it, but it's really infuriating, especially in the car when I have it mounted on the dash for things like GPS, streaming audio (I just want to be able to see what song is playing if it's a new album), and other things that require a glance over to the phone. Sadly, in the car is probably the worst time for the dimming, since the ambient light outside makes the screen appear off when this "feature" kicks in.
I've spent a great deal of time searching/reading threads not only here, but on other mobile forums as well, and I cannot even find a reference to this issue that behaves the same way mine does.
This is my Hail Mary in the hopes that I really have missed something simple.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Nexus 6 displsy light up when picked up

So I have a Nexus 6 and when i pick up my phone the ambient display does not light up the screen. In the ambient display settings it says "Wake screen when you pick device or receive notifications" and as i have said i get NO reaction when picking up my phone, even shaking it does NOTHING.

I noticed with mine I was picking up the phone and covering the top near the sensor. It is likely designed that way so it does not waste battery when flopping around in a pocket or purse.
It doesn't matter how I pick the phone up, I have tried EVERY which way and the display will not come on.
I have also tested all my sensors. I have tried rooted unrooted and using different ROMs that also have ambient display, none of which work.
try gravity screen or use a custom Kernel and tap twice at the Display

Are you on 5.1? This guy is having the same problem.
Yea I'm on 5.1 but I have been having this issue for awhile which also includes custom roms
Try This
First, my Ambient display is working properly.
I am not sure the sensor on the top of the screen has anything to do with Ambient display. Why do I say this? If I put my finger over the sensor and pick up the phone, Ambient display works properly. But there are a few people who swear that replacing the screen protector solved their problem. My screen protector covers the sensor and mine still works. Who knows!
What we do know for sure is that Ambient display requires some level of security be set. This is by design.
After upgrading to 5.1, my Ambient display stop working. How did I fix it? In my case it was that the screen display security got reset to none during the update. When I changed it to "Swipe", Ambient display started working properly. Security --> Screen Lock --> Swipe. Of course you could change it to other options as well, like PIN, Pattern, Password.
This may not be your issue, but just in case ....
Thanks ...

Can't turn off double tap to wake?

I've tried a couple of ROMs with double tap to wake. I honestly love the feature, but I've had too many issues with wake locks in my pocket, so I've decided it's not worth it and I'll turn it off. The problem is, it doesn't actually turn off. I'll hit that off switch, tap my screen a few times, and it's awake again. This is frustrating because then it wakes up in my pocket still. Is there any way to permanently remove it from the ROM? Maybe something I can flash or something I can change to completely disable this feature?
Grab /system/lib/hw/power.shamu.so from a pre-rooted (untouched) stock rom or a rom that hasn't enabled it

FWIW, Exodus and I'm sure some other ROMs, have a setting to prevent pocket wake ups by using the proximity sensor.

Are you sure it's not ambient display waking your phone?
Eh... "ambient display" doesn't wake your phone. Ambient display just shows WHEN your phone is awoken by... tap to wake, shake to wake, incoming notification.
OP: Some people confuse tap to wake and shake to wake. Nexus 6 implements shake to wake by default. Problem is that tapping on the screen can.... shake the phone.
This generally should NOT be going off in your pocket. Either, that is. Reason is that it is *supposed* to use the state of the proximity sensor as a CONDITION on whether or not it should start up ambient display. The proximity sensor will read as "near" when the phone is in your pocket, thus prevent tap or shake to wake from triggering ambient display.
So sounds like you probably tried a couple of different sysimages that both contain a bug that stops it from taking the proximity sensor into account. My guess would be something that is based on cyanogenmod (aka "the buggiest android ever conceived"). Try stock and see if the problem goes away.
Personally, I prefer to use a custom ROM with native LED control and disable ambient display.

If you haven't got a modified Nexus 6 with this problem, then this isn't relevant to you.

AOD brightness

Hello, does some one knows why the AOD sometimes is brighter sometimes dimmer, regardless of ambient light, it is driving me nuts as I do not find some setting for controlling this…
Btw, I am still on 7.1.1, 950 F stock

I Think it's related to the light sensor on top of the device. When you get your phone off your pocket it will be lighten up.
And probably will happen at the same time you read out the screen. Aftere facedown the device or when it hasn't recognized human usage for a while (1 to 2 min.), it should be dimmed to reduce power.
Have you set auto brightness to off at 'settings/ display' or else tried to set 'adaptive display' to 'basic' at 'settings/ display/ screen mode'?
Have you set the AOD to be always on? Or having time specific settings enabled?
Hopefully this will help you out.
Thanks , I use entertainment mode, I set AOD to always, as for light sensor, in dark or bright situations it seems to be brighter or dimmer at random, sometimes I wake up after 2 or 3 hours of sleep antd AOD is very bright!, or the contrary, beeing for sometime outdoors and is dimmed
Which version of AOD did you have installed? Is it custom downloaded from sammobile or something? Maybe force stop the app, or better to clear app data and reboot and/or check if the app has an update. All in app-info
Currently I'm on 8.0.0 and no issues with AOD so far.

I did some research and found something that might work to decrease dimming to 0.
The app (link to Playstore) "priv set" (by: oguzhan yigit) has some powerful settings with it to set on overlay basis.
One thing... You only can use it with root privilege.
The attachment shows the possible setting to decrease dimming while dozing.

Question [CLOSED]Always-on display too dim

Anyone know how to brighten up the Always-on clock? Mine is almost too dim to make out.
I've tried fiddling with all the setting (Display and Battery) and once got it to be brighter for a short time, but after a restart it's too dim again, and fiddling with all the settings makes no difference.
I see that other have this problem too.
I have the same problem too! The AOD auto dim itself to low brightness and many times almost cannot see anything especially during the day. In the end, I just turn it off as it doesnt makes much difference turning it on.
Seems like there is no way to adjust it not to auto dim itself.
