Hey All,
I'm set up, and use my MotoX (XT1060 DE, VZW), in much the same way as I've read Kid Joe does: I flash twrp (because I have to---can't just boot it) and root so that I can run basic apps like Ti Backup, WiFi Tether, and Root Explorer. Nothing more.
I went to flash the stock recovery using a computer running Debian Wheezy this morning so that I could update to end the OTA-nag madness, and I used the Linux/fastboot that came with the stock ROM zip file I got from VZW upon request some time back.
Anyway, I got a message that I'd never seen before and wondered if anyone else out there had seen it. Specifically, I did the following from a non-root account on my computer from the directory where I'd unzip'd the ROM archive:
$ sudo Linux/ fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
The feedback report stated something like: "Variable Undefined..."
When I looked at my phone, which was in the bootloader, I saw a couple of getvar variables reported along the lines of "..max_download_size..." something or other. I'd never seen that before as, up till now at least, I don't recall ever using VZW's version of fastboot.
Both my computer and my phone reported that the recovery partition had been flashed; and, when I boot to recovery, it *looks* like the stock recovery, but I'm not exactly sure that it is. Why? Because there is one little issue that makes me wonder if all is well: When I boot my phone to recovery and pick the "Wipe Cache Partition" menu item, the phone shows a spinning lattice-orb in the open robot door, along with "Erasing..." underneath, but it never comes back from that; and I've waited for as long as seven or eight minutes for it to do so. I have to hard reboot the phone by press-and-holding the power button to turn it off, then powering it up normally.
Has anyone else out there ever seen any of that behavior? I would really appreciate it if you'd let me know about it...
many thanks,
john

Well im not 100 percent sure but I recently rooted my 4.4.4 phone no boot loader unlock and also on at&t. I had to flash a non ota update first and I had to remove something in the updates files that said max download size before it would work.
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the suggestions and feedback!
I don't have a clue as to why that message was coming up. I guess it's possible that both versions of fastboot that I have, VZW's and Google's, are somehow now out of date.
I actually went back and re-flashed stock recovery and got the same message, and I was still having the long wait time for it to wipe the cache partition. I actually waited longer when executing the wipe, and the phone eventually rebooted itself to its normal state.
I ended up flashing one of the later-model versions of TWRP recovery, v2.8.5. When I tried wiping cache from it, and, just as before, it wipes in seconds. *Boggle*
thanks again,
john

My motorola Nexus 6 won't turn on, when I try to power it on, it shows the Google sign then shuts off immediately. When I plug in the charger from a complete power off, the white battery sign keeps flashing, it shows for 1 second then shuts off then repeats the cycle of showing the battery sign then shutting off. It boots into bootloader/fastboot mode fine, and I have tried flashing the factory image, it flashes fine but it still shuts off immediately while showing the google sign. It won't even boot into recovery after the flash, it just shuts off after the google sign. This isn't my first nexus, in know that flashing factory image should fix 99% of issues. Please help.
P.S I didn't purchase officially from google or Motorola, bought it from a guy who claimed he bricked it trying to install a font pack so I figured let me buy it and restore factory image. Didn't work. I tried flashing manually, the process went fine, but it it still turns off at google splash image. I tried Wugfresh toolkit also to no avail. He said he rooted it, installed custom recovery and euphoria os rom. Then he installed the fontpack, it told him to reboot to apply changes, and it wouldn't boot past google screen after that. It doesnt even get to the boot animation. It just shuts off. When its off and u plug in the charger it does the same thing, you just keep seeing the charging symbol over and over because its constantly rebooting. Its a T-Mobile Nexus 6 BTW, model number XT1103. I spoke to my friend who has a local repair shop and he says there is nothing out for his z3x or his other boxes for the nexus 6 because it is such a new and rare device. His theory is that the partition tables have been corrupted somehow and need to be rewritten manually. Please any help would be appreciated. I can promise a hefty $$ reward for any individual that helps me recover it to a working state.

Yes I tried pushing the stock recovery individually and it succeeded in the command prompt, but won't enter recovery, just shows google and shuts off. I tried pushing twrp too but same outcome. Yes I had flashed the stock image manually, everything flashed well from what the command promt said, but when it should reboot to recovery after flash to wipe, just shuts off.

Please! Anyone!
by manually do you mean flashing all the separate parts of the stock image separately, system, boot, recovery, cache and so on..........
I don't know what else to do after going through with that process.....
Make sure you have the latest fastboot by updating SDK Manager. Then reflash bootloader then reboot back to bootloader to reset. Then proceed to flash each partition again. Directions below.
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img <-- rename bootloader to this to make it easier
fastboot flash radio radio.img <--- again rename to make easier
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fasyboot flash system system.img
Hope this helps.
I'm a total newb here so take what I tell you with a grain of salt. I had your exact same problem on my Nexus 5. Every single thing you just described is what happened to my N5. And just like your N6...I was able to boot up into recovery (stock and TWRP), I was able to flash all the things manually and even used Wug's NRT. But then whenever I tried to actually boot up the device it could never pass the Google logo....basically EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING TO YOU.
What I did to fix everything? Changed my battery. Sounds stupid and totally irrelevant but that did the trick. When I opened up my phone I noticed my battery had a nasty bulge and realized it was defective. Bought a new one for $25 and have never had any issues ever since. I suggest you look at your battery and see if that is the root of your problem. I have heard of the N6 having some batteries expanding and causing the back covers to pop off...this could be related to your problem.
Like I said I am a newb and thought I'd share my experience in the hopes it solves your problem.
Good luck buddy! :good:
my N6 is actually away getting repaired for the exact issue you described, expanding battery [assumed], and cover coming away from the bezel.....
I believe though that if you keep the device plugged into the wall when trying to boot up with this battery defect it will get through the boot, at least in the beginning anyway....
I believe also that if it was a battery issue the device would power off first, as opposed to just sticking on the Google logo.........

Same thing happened to me. As soon as I updated to the newest version of fastboot on my computer, everything worked...

I know, it's been a long time, but coud you tell me what happened to the phone?
Hi everyone, I'm having a lot of problems with my phone: last night, after it dropped to 0% battery life, it wouldn't charge. So i waited a while and ifinally managed to turn it on, but It wouldn't go past the Cyanogenmod logo. So i tried few things, first wiping cache, then factory reset from TWRP and I even tried the "Factory" option in the fastboot screen. Nothing worked, and it even got worse I think, TWRP says it's unable to mount /data partition and /storage partition. I don't know what caused it, and i don't remember the precise moment it became "unmountable" for the first time (since I've been trying to fix this thing for like 24 hours now).
Since i couldn't fix it via recovery, I tried looking for people who had the same problem on the internet, and I tried everything i could find. (like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2683787).
I then tried to go back to stock rom via adb and fastboot, but without success.
The main problem with fastboot is the fact that it doesn't change anything in my phone, it gives no errors when i try to flash the stock rom, but when i reboot my phone, nothing changes, or at least this is my opinion, since I still get the cyanogenmod logo, and TWRP doesn't get replaced (while it should go away, since when in the whole process of flashing the rom, i also flash recovery.img, which shouldn't be TWRP).
I tried a whole lot of other commands too, like "fastboot erase recovery", but TWRP is still there, and so is the cyanogenmod logo.
This is why i think fastboot is unable to write in my phone, but if that's the case, it should at least give errors.
So, wrapping up, my data partition seems to be corrupted, and flashing the stock rom still gets my into a bootloop (with the logo from the previous rom and TWRP still there).
Do you have any advice?
P.S: my phone is a xt1068
Are you able to pull logcat?
Logcat command works, i don't get errors in the terminal, but in the text file there's only this line : "/sbin/sh: exec: line 1: logcat: not found"
Dmesg works though, I don't know if it's helpful

I have same phone, you mentioned you also tried to flash stock rom without success, did you flash the partition file aswell before flashing system and the rest of files ? Check the flashfile.xml file into the stock firmware folder to make sure you not missing anything.
Code:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
Good luck.
i'm on the same boat. It seems it's a NAND issue, but how come it happens randomly?
It seems to happen (its a bit rare, so don't get worried) when you let your battery drop to 0% and the phone suddently turn off, like what happened to the OP.

If it's a bit rare, how come there are a rather interesting quantity of posts regarding that matter? I'd like to know WHY I can't write even with fastboot. There should be a way of unlocking the NAND / partitions. Even if I try to hard brick it, it's impossible.
PS: can we someone a look at this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56608822&postcount=2
Possibly if we can force the way to QHSUSB mode, phone can be saved.

Unfortunately I didn't quite understand what that is about, if you happen to try it out let us know.
Anyway, if we don't manage to fix it, I guess I'm going to try and take it back to the store, since it is a common problem. Only problem is I'm on a custom rom and I can't even go back to stock and relock the bootloader, so I don't think they are going to replace it, but it's worth a try.
You can try by helping me to look for a circuit PDF from the board or trying it yourself.
I could try and disassemble it, but you're gonna have to wait a few days, I'm not at home and I'm gonna be back on the weekend.
As for the circuit pdf, I was only able to find videos and guides on how to disassemble it, unfortunately
Dude, no worries. Ive took the back out with all the screws, but I have nothng to make shorts with.... I'll come up with something. Take your time and keep me posted.
any news concerning this problem? i have tried searching for a manual but I did not succeed.
Anyways after finding the manual, we can short circuit the 2 capacitors there and the phone will be in qhsusb mode.
And after that ?

After that.... well.... after some research, we'll be needing singleimage.bin to use the blankflash utility for lollipop phones (mbm-ci 5.0 lollipop) so somebody can generate the singleimage.bin for us.
Once we have that, we can try to flash the phone at lowlevel to see what happens.
I will search the internets in hoping to find the schematics of this phone.
Keep me informed if you find it faster .
Cheers mate
we can connect through hangouts / etc.

Hello my lovely Nexus family,
I need your help! I've searched all over the web and these forums, and have yet to find a single thing that would help me.
After making a stupid mistake from tinkering, my phone was stuck on the "Google" screen. Not a big deal, just a simple wipe and fresh flash (and yeah, that's what I wanted anyways), right? So I went straight to Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit to full wipe. It did the whole process of flashing MRA58R to the phone until I got to "sending sparse 'system'" on the terminal window. "Fastboot.exe has stopped working. Windows is finding a solution....." suddenly appeared while the terminal was processing everything. When the phone decided to reboot after thinking it had finished, it came back with the "Phone Corrupt" message.
I don't know what to do, as this is the 9,999th time I've flashed a phone, and I've never seen this before (obviously) so I'm not really sure what to do.
If I'm missing any details, which I feel I am, do not hesitate to ask.
May be obvious no... But you didn't actually say...
Will phone boot into fastboot if you have it powered off, the first pressing and holding volume down, then pressing and holding power until the phone boots?

Yes, I'm able to boot into fastboot with the phone powered off using the physical buttons. I'm also able to get working commands from the terminal.
Then what is the issue? Flash The image manually, re-install fastboot if needed... Or better yet download the image from google manually, check MD5, extract the main zip, as well as the update zip inside... using the fastboot that comes with it to flash all partitions?
One flash went wrong... So ok try again. And don't use the toolkit so you can actually follow whats going on (and because the only posts with troubles seem to be from people using toolkits)

I've done more than one flash today. My next will make 20 in the same hour with failed results. I'll try flashing the bits of the file manually and see how that works.
It could even be the computer I'm using. I'll report back soon.
Are you using the same fastboot.exe every time and getting the same error? Did you verify MD5
So, I got home, hopped on my laptop and got to work as usual. I used the factory provided cable and the problem was solved. I believe it has something to do with either the cord I was using to transfer the data, or the computer I was using.
Other than that - PROBLEM. SOLVED.
If the fastboot exe was fail ("stopped working") the cable was less likely the issue, most likely just the binary on that computer.
Perfect example of why not to use a tool kit until "after" you know how to do it manually.
First of all, I've looked around for answers, and I seem to find the same solution everywhere, which is OK. It just doesn't work for me.
Here's the drill. My Moto X was sitting in a drawer for a year or two. I took it out a while ago to update it and see how 5.1 worked on it. I put it back in the drawer as an emergency phone. Last weekend I took it out, to find that it's stuck in Fastboot. the up volume key scrolls, and down volume key does nothing (originally down scrolls, up chooses) and the power button reboots.
Long story short, I was able to get my computer to recognize my phone (tried for hours until I realized it was the cable, use the right cable and voila!) I unlocked the bootloader via Motorola, and after hours of trying was able to flash everything I thought was necessary (boot, recovery, motoboot, system, and so on). However, in every thread and video, the "fastboot reboot" command makes the phone reboot into the actual OS, whereas mine just keeps rebooting into fastboot, regardless of what I flash.
I don't notice anything off, so hence why I recur to everyone in here to give me some advice on what I could be doing wrong. I've downloaded stock roms so far. I get a partition error with .zip files so always have to flash the images individually.
Please let me know if I'm missing any details, and/or what other information I should provide.
Thank you!!

Flash system.img and boot.img then flash twrp.img and boot into twrp and flash your stock ROM for your device
I am having a hell of a time rooting this phone. (Motorola Nexus 6 XT1100)
I am trying to follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/how-to-nexus-6-one-beginners-guide-t2948481
If anyone can offer some suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.
I managed to get as far as unlocking the bootloader in fastboot mode.
The next step, obtaining root, is where all my problems started.
I downloaded CF Root and extracted the files, as instructed, allowed the root tool to run, (I'm using Linux, if it matters).
When the process was finished, and my phone attempted to reboot, it got stuck on the Google screen with the little lock (showing unlocked).
I allowed the phone to stay in this mode for around 30 minutes thinking it just needed time.
It never did anything. I attempted to let it try and start up again (a couple times actually) and it never goes past the Google lock screen.
I powered down the phone and restarted in fastboot mode, and attempted to run the CF Root tool again, with the same result.
I am currently stuck with only having access to fastboot.
I tried to flash a recovery and boot into that, but it won't allow that either. Perhaps this isn't even possible (YET), as it's not in the instructions to flash a recovery until after the rooting process, but I thought I would try it anyway.
I have tried flashing TWRP and Lineage recovery. No success with either, although the terminal is saying
sending 'recovery' OKAY
writing 'recovery' OKAY
But when trying to reboot recovery I get hit with
unknown reboot target recovery
Anyone know what's going on and how I can get this resolved? I just want to install a recovery and flash a custom ROM.
In that guide you can follow my journey to root starting in post# 929. I had & have had a LOT of help from my fellow XDAers. They're great & thank you all.
Thanks!
I'll check it out.
Boy, oh, boy.
I don't know what is going on.
I finally managed to get out of the bootloader screen.
I don't know what/how it worked. I downloaded Nexus Root Toolkit to a windows computer and tried the Flash Stock + Unroot option.
It keep saying waiting on device or device not detected or something ( I cant remember exactly, it was hours/many error screens ago!)
Next, I tried the option for Root + Add a Custom Recovery and directed it to where my TWRP file.
Again it acted like it was doing something. Even found my connected ADB device. Went through a couple processes, said it would need to restart a couple/few times. Everything was trucking along just fine until suddenly, it got hung up 'Waiting on device"
Not sure what happened, but all of a sudden, it could no longer find my device.
For chits and giggles, I decided to try and reboot recovery from the bootloader screen. I had attempted this many times and all it did was start back up in bootloader, BUT, this time, it actually started up in some recovery program I have never seen before. It wasn't stock and it certainly wasn't TWRP!
At this point, I hooked my device back into my computer running Linux and attempted to push TWRP, and reboot in recovery.
It worked!
Now that I had a recovery I was comfortable using, I proceeded to push my ROM.
Wanted to try Lineage with MicroG, but I am not advanced enough to go that route. I could not get a fake app store to work.
Guess I'll have to stick with what I know. I love the idea of MicroG, but it apparently doesn't work with Pure Nexus.
Anyway, just wanted to post some closure for this thread. I know the Motorola Nexus 6 is an old phone, but I like it. This is my second one. My first one, screen finally cracked and it was cheaper to just purchase a new one from Amazon than to replace the screen.
