Don't think so, you're going to need unlock bootloader

Can I still root if I update?

Or do I have to root and acquire an update another way?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yes you can root after the OTA update. I rooted mine after doing the update with the Root Kit (see Dev section).
OK thank you!

FYI, Nexus devices are never locked down. You are always free to unlock the bootloader, root it, and do whatever you like. You can take any and all updates without fear of losing anything.

Superuser but no root

Hello captivate guys. I couldn't help but notice my wife captivate has superuser but no root. I downloaded titanium backup it couldnt find a root. So my question is why. Is there a permaroot for the captivate. Or can you download SU without a root. She isn't the first owner of this phone. However shortly after buying the phone I did a factory reset on it. I've never seen this before on her phone. I've seen it on mine because I flash coystom rims on my inspire. Any thought would be great thanks.

It seems as if it needs to be rooted again. You can "loose" root.

I didn't think the current version of Kingo Root worked for MJ5. I know Kingo Root is suppose to be releasing a version 2 of their root method... Been searching for a way to root MJ5 as well after mine auto updated, making me lose root...:crying:

On page 98 of root de la vega designgears posted a universal root method for when a new firmware drops. Haven't personally tried it yet though

I am rooted with Kingo and MJ5, working fine. I did have to re-root after the OTA update though.

I was rooted with Kingo before OTA. Unrooted to get uodate. Then rerooted. Took about 10 times for Kingo version 1.1.2 to recognize my phone but it finally worked.

i heard kingo has a malware?
Well from what I understand people thought that because of the imei being sent out. However this is not 100% reliable.... I am going to attempt to root with kingo again myself.

Just rooted with kingo about 30 mins ago so far no issues although the process was kind of iffy. Seems like it just keeps trying different methods until its rooted. It never even got to the screen that said I was rooted I just opened supersu after like the 3rd time and I was rooted so I just unplugged it.
Edit: by the way I had to use a USB cord from my note 2 the 3.0 cable didn't work at all.

I couldn't root via Root De La Vega. I actually bricked and had to odin the stock PIT back to the phone. I then found out is was because I was on MJ5, I downloaded Kingo, hooked up the phone and it rooted it painlessly. Thanks Kingo!
Thank You!
Like some of you guys, i was able to root with Kingo version 1.1.2
Thank You!
I also was finally able to get root using Kingo. Ended up having to use a different computer and a usb 2.0 cable, instead of the 3.0 cable that came with the phone. Now I can stop debating on wether or not to return my Note 3. :good:

I believe that since its more or less a universal method one click it has to figure out what device you're using. Thus why it appears to keep trying. And yeah the you're rooted screen took a bit to come up when I did it the 2nd time

Unfortunately you will have to use HTC Dev to unlock and root to use rumrunner. I haven't seen any other way but try looking for a way to root without unlocking.

1) The warranty isn't voided by unlocking.
2) You can unlock via HTC Dev then S-OFF using Rumrunner and change everything back to stock if needs be... HTC will never know

They shouldn't but don't take my word for it! I remember reading something like that.
When I had a One X I unlocked it via HTC dev and I could hand it in for warranty. (Wouldn't turn on).
On the other hand rumrunner shouldn't alert HTC that your device has been unlocked.

[TOOL] HTC One 2014 (M8) All-In-One Toolkit V2.0 [4-19-2014] [PERM ROOT]

I'm going to maintain only one thread (universal thread), since its easier to manage. My toolkit supports this model. Download links and info are in the link below

I added CWM for Sprint so you guys have support. When TWRP is fully up and running, I'll add it in for you guys
Crap. I realized I posted this in the wrong HTC One section.
Enjoy people!

Unlocking your bootloader will factory reset the phone, so yes.

Does that wipe the internal/built-in storage or just apps/settings?

Wipes internal. After unlocking the bootloader it's just like turning on the phone the first time.

Does anyone notice that the calculator app disappears. I've found the sense calculator apk and re-installed it. In extreme power saver mode is when I noticed it gone. Installed the apk and all is well now. Also does anyone know what the app MobileZone is/does and can I uninstall it with no issues using titanium?

The calculator app is located in /data and gets deleted when you unlock your bootloader (along with a couple of other apps, as I recall).

I took the oat before I was rooted or unlocked or s off. After I took the ota I unlocked and rooted using this tool which is awesome, then I did s off with no problems at all.
