Horrible Lag - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not only in stock but also in Cm12.1 while sliding in recent apps in order to close apps, lag occurs. There is always lag. This craze me. Is this problem special for my device or common problem ?

Nothing like it on my device, or on any other device I've seen for that matter.

How much free RAM is there? Do you have a ****load of apps installed?

Free ram is around 1gb and not much apps installed.Horrible was a litte exaggeration but mostly lag happens while sliding.I use animations with 0.5x.If I use with 1.0x,sliding becomes more smooth. However,I cant understand why lag happens in lolipop, because there is not any problem in kitkat.

I'm on Lollipop and I'm not able to reproduce the lags you are describing, what other developer options have you changed?
If nothing helps, you could try to do a clean install with PC Companion.

[QUESTION] Why does the app menu lag with more apps?

When I wiped my ext partition and had maybe 20 default apps on, the app launcher moved like a beast, instant, basically like the godly iphone UI + a discrete adjuster.
However now I'ved restored my 250ish apps/elements it now lags like a mofo. What I want to know is what physically is being limited hardware wise, and is there any way to boost the performance of this memory? I assume it would be between CPU, RAM and GPU, although I dont understand how it could be annoy of those [sorry for my noobishness]:
CPU: Snapdragon, OCed, not exactly CPU intensive anyway
RAM: Have 250MB free, never seems to get 'full' when i quickly tab to the usage
GPU: This is what I guess, but if so why cant we get around this with a less intensive menu setup? Surely all that is happening is we have 20-25 icons + labels floating up and down on a screen? To be honest id prefer literally just that on an instant screen over the 'oo that looks nice.... oh wait it lags like a *****' we have now.
Any comments would be appreciated
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A
well, one thing which would probably slow down the launcher is the sd card speed... and considering u've got a helluva lot of apps on ur sd card, it seems like a plausable reason...
Is anyone able to confirm that? Surely though its precached the icons and names somewhere though :/

if you use CM rom you can go to spare parts and enable "keep launcher in memory" that usually helps a lot
I have Kang, so has a launcher over CM. The setting was enabled, but i dissabled and renabled to see if that was a problem. Possibly did solve a bit of it, but it still takes at least half a second for the menu to catch up with my finger, even including 'touch lag'. The only way you can see what I mean is if you play with an empty phone, its INSTANT.

You mean the activity/app choice list right? (like when you make a application shortcut, or view installed applications). It does lag when you have a lot of apps. If it does cache the data its definitely short-term, if you try it again after a day its slow the first time.
Lets hope froyo has something to make it faster, systemwide.

I assume the only difference between our phones then is SD card.
I have http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001CQT0X4/ref=oss_product

Hmmm :/ So its not my SD card. I just dont understand why it physically lags, when I watch people showcasing some new app etc, their menu is perfectly fluid, even with a similar number of apps.
Anyone have any other ideas?

-Help- Lag After Jelly Bean Update.

Hi Everyone,I am new to the forum(But following it from many days)
As the title suggests, after I updated the firmware through Official LG PC Suite, i am experiencing massive lags.
Used RAM is always at approx 700 Mb. Opening more than 1 tab in Chrome phone lag badly. There are launcher redraws and much more.
Tried a factory reset but it made no difference.
Usually wiping cache, valpik and resetting to factory settings before flashing solves the problem, and most of the time its an app, usually a battery saver app with permissions to modify CPU speeds that causes this.
Also please stop capitalizing each and every word in you sentence. It's not a title!

You should carry out a factory reset AFTER the upgrade. Wiping cache and dalvik (not valpik) cache is done from a custom recovery, which I preusme you have not installed on your phone?

Yes, I was using the UK version and didn't see any problems, but didn't try to change the CPU speeds.

I suggest you go back to ics like i did. jellybean is full of crap and ram usage is always high for no reason.
If not. then root the phone and freeze some apps, disable others and uninstall the ones you don't use. to keep your launcher from redrawing then force it into memory with ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 paste this at the end of your build.prop in system folder.

So,this is the only way to get rid of lag? Would V20b solve it? I do not want to rollback to ics because i am new to these things and do not know how to do it perfectly.

the only way you can follow instructions incorrectly is if you brick the phone... and i found a lot of issues with jb mainly performance.
Lagg is resolved with a factory reset. Dont restore your files and apps just install them again after factory reset! Not all files and apss from ICS have same settings and functionality on JB so that can lead to lagg..
RAM is here to be used,if RAM isnt used then your phone isnt performing his full potential! If RAM isnt used that means that apps in the phone are not working,so when you open them you will get lagg because they have to start up every time..Some apps drain battery so you can grenify them but apps have to run for your phone to be fully exploited!

You should install through LGFlash Tool for the cleanest install, after that root and install your apps again. It's a pain in the ass but, the best way... About ram, if it's being used, the phone performance is better but that might reflects in the battery life. I use to close all processes after use the phone and my battery life is very good, the delay to access the apps 1st time after being stopped is about half of a second, soo... I can live with that.

Seems to me that as long as you have all the default services running, you hit less than some limit of ram, or a period of inactivity, and the OS preemtively starts garbage-collecting programs in mem - among others, the launcher/homescreen app. Makes sense, more or less, to do that. Because it'll free up priority for apps that don't actually receive input (such as the launcher screen).
But on the other hand, homescreens can contain lots of apps, and could take more than 5 seconds to load, so not such a brilliant idea to destroy the cache. Meanwhile, services you never use tend to poll the system on their own, and suddenly they're treated with more attention than the programs you're actually using..
Seems the running programs being replaced by fifty useless services is less of a problem the more free ram you have, though.
And that's why a lot of "garbage" was un-installed on my device (other users made the same).

[Q] [help] problem with Xperia T

I don't know is this really a problem or not, but it really bother. my broblem is about multitasking, it looks like my phone doesn't have multitasking (like ios! )
for example I open opera and let it load some pages then ttpod and play a music, after them go to an explorer, and I go back to opera it's now closed and I have to re-load the pages.
overall I can't keep more than 2-3 apps open at the same time.
is there any solution for this problem?

try it, set it to the "Default Number" or "Max"

I've tried background process in the setting, but I still have this problem. There is no "max" option, only "at most 4 processes"
I've tried some tweaks with some apps such as Pimp my Rom and Android tuner but to be honest it made it even worse! and I had to do full wipe!
@greg, it's not just about opera, I can't run more than 2-3 apps in background.
I have stock 4.1.2 with doomkernel v7 rotted and unlocked.

you use opera for FB, hm?
that version of Opera mini comes with many bugs, one of them is AutoRotation, when you rotate your phone, it jumps out of the app, maybe another bug is what you are facing, not being able to chache the pages in background, MAYBE...
try another browser, like Default or Dolphin or Chrome, and see if the problem is still there with those apps, if not, then the problem is BUGGY opera mini, which i guess so

it's so weird
never experienced this issue, in NO phone of mine
i know this might a bit noobie guide, but first of all, uninstall unnecessary apps, maybe you've loaded your phone with a ton of apps, which certainly eat up RAM even if they are not running, that's the way Android manages RAM, so, uninstall whatever thing you don't use...
if the problem still exists there, then update your phone or flash another firmware, for example go back to ICS to see it helps or not..

Removal of bloatware really helps here. I find Firefox sometimes closes as it uses a lot of memory, but it beats all others in terms of usability + ability to download any files (sometimes chrome or stock just downloads a dumb .txt file, can't believe they still haven't fixed that) but yeah remove useless apps it helps a lot

[Q] I9000 memory problems

Hello everyone! I've been following this website for a while and have been using HellyBean on my device.
I'm using the most recent version, 27/09 and I am sad with the RAM problems I'm having. Simple things like writing a SMS can be a nightmare at times because the keyboard goes away and it does not appear again! Using the AOSP browser it closes a lot and the wifi icon goes gray constantly.
I've tried to do a clean install twice but this happens every time. Has anyone been having these problems or is it only me? Anyone knows how I can fix it?
Thanks in advance!
After a reboot how many free RAM do you have? Have you installed apps like whatsapp, skype etc. they need huge mem ...especially the Gapps ...and our device only have 512MB RAM less reserved for the Kernel to be used by some drivers (video, capture, JPG) for DMA (Direct Memory Access)
What kernel uses HellyBean in Stock? Maybe try Sema-Kernel with BigMEM-Libs gives you up to 409MB RAM available for the Android System, but breaking the video recording in 720p, maybe it could help ...

After a reboot, the device reports 134 MB free. There are a lot of apps running and changing the RAM at the beginning but it stabilizes at around 130 MB and 120 MB. Here everything seems ok. I had some heavy apps, facebook, facebook messenger, skype (installed but not actually running, stopped using it) and firefox. Firefox was the only app I had trouble before but it is normal for it. Maybe Gapps but I find it strange to happen only now.
HellyBean uses the Devil Kernel by default. I used the option that gave me slightly more memory than default but still with access to the 720p recording. I changed to Semaphore Kernel to try and see if the same happened. Installed the slim version and it still happened. I now have the normal version because videos didn't work, I don't know why. I'll try the Devil Kernel again with the extreme memory option. I'll have no camera but let's see what happens. I'm not expecting miracles though. If it worked once with the normal amount of memory it should still work now...
EDIT: By the way, to clarify, facebook, facebook messenger and skype are not on my device anymore. firefox still is.
Experimenting now with the Devil Kernel with the Maximum RAM option (439 MB w/out camera)
Hmhh okay ,maybe you can test your origin HellyBean later ( without using facebook and so on ),and see what happened..
For Testing i i think the devil kernel with maximum RAM option is good, but i think you need the camera, so it is no option for daily use, or what do you think ...
As is said there are many apps which consumed much of ram and so android has to restart different apps often ...
Our device only has 512MB RAM...is it the latest helly bean version based on android 4.3 ???
But when you have tested hellybean with stock kernel AND Sema-Kernel and it still happened, could it be a bug in hellybean? Did you a clean installation ???

Testing with Devil Kernel now with the maximum RAM option (439MB). It has no facebook, facebook messenger and the skype app is unninstalled now as well. So far so good! I've actually managed to use Firefox and write a message in a floating window with no problems at all. I've been going at it for a while now, testing Firefox, the AOSP browser, playing games, sending SMS, updating stuff, everything works fine. Except now for the camera. While I don't normally use it I don't like it disabled. Just for testing right now.
I found a screenshot I took, the phone reported only 17MB free and 379MB used. Calculator says it was only 103,6MB, unless something else escapes me, and facebook was restarting and poweramp and voodoo sound were battling to stay running since I was trying to listen to music. I thought it might be some kind of memory leak or something since it did somekind of soft-reboot (shows boot screen but doesn't ask for pin code) and everything was fine for a little while...
I don't think there are anymore heavy apps running on my phone. It's too bad the phone is considered almost ancient now but I'll have to deal with it for now. No money for a new one so cool as this one!
HellyBean is now based on 4.3 for most of it's compatible devices. It includes the GT-i9000 I use.
I first did a dirty flash on a new version. But that started the problems so I did a clean flash ( lots of wipes since I screwed up the kernel during install ) twice and it still happened even with a more recent version. Visiting the thread doesn't seem to show much regarding this problem. I can't post there yet or I would ask them first since it's the same ROM. They are only talking about SWAP and I don't use it. So it doesn't seem like a HellyBean bug. I thought also maybe it was a CM bug since HellyBean is based on it... But I would probably find more people in my situation if it was like that. I would like not to downgrade to the last version I had no problems with since I like a feature that came with the new version (deactivated because it could be that feature was a problematic one) but if this lasts I'll do that.
Thanks for your suggestions!
EDIT: It seems to be fixed! Don't ask me how... I didn't want to get the DevilKernel from the site since I already had it on the device but I had to install the last version again which I used to test the maximum RAM option I talked about. Since I had no problem I started decreasing the RAM amount until I got to the default option. And everything is working fine! I really don't get it why a dirty reflash fixed that a clean install did not. Sad because I couldn't figure out what was happening... But it's normal again... Lucky me, I guess? Anyway, thanks for your time trying to help me! I appreciate it!
No Problem therefore it is a forum !!! And it is great that i could help, or not in your case
It is strange, but the main thing is ,it works...however ...
Thanks for reporting!!!

Phone is soooo slow!!!

Afternoon peeps,
Recently my Mini 2 has just ground to an unusable, good-for-nothing pile of crap.
- It is soooo slow to do anything.
- It rotates the screen when it's not being rotated.
- It locks in the middle of performing tasks.
- It blacks out for 30 seconds or so before becoming responsive again.
- Voice on Google Maps or Runkeeper apps keeps glitching.
I'm running CM12 [12-20150411-NIGHTLY-memul] with TWRP recovery.
Reinstalling the ROM returns the phone to a normal function, temporarily, before descending into chaos.
Clearing the cache partition sort of works....for a little while.
I/O Scheduler is ROW.
Storage isn't anywhere near full with 3.65Gb free.
Available RAM is on average about 170Mb
My thoughts are that an app is causing this.
Can anyone throw some troubleshooting ideas into the pot?
Thanks
E

Clearing cache and ram just makes it worst as Android works different from PC's.
It seems you're in the good path as just need to find what APP is doing that. Providing that you run CM12 without extras and its ok, than try install/uninstall one app at the time until you find the one its causing trouble

I thought that might be the case. Also, I'm gettimg a lot of Background App crashes/Not responding, but there're no patterns. OneFootball, Media Storage, System UI, Google+, Facebook Messenger all make an appearance.
I think i may have to start from a fresh again

Well CM12 its a bit buggy so if you gonna run high end apps i suggest stock ROM.
Regarding RAM, android manages that pretty well for you. The more ram in use, the better things work. (if you know how RAM works) same thing with cache. So don't use stupid programs to clear RAM as they are useless.
You can google for more info.

Interesting, the reason I'm on CM with this HTC is because the Stock ROM also showed the same symptoms, so I moved to CM to try to cure. I really liked the stock UI and was reluctant to move away from it.
I do know RAM and that does make sense - more stuff in RAM = quicker access to resouces, but surely its still a good troubleshooting step to clear down if these problems arise?

Like i said, Android will clear the apps when it need to open resources for another.
Reading back your posts, you might need to do full re-installation .
If you install Google Apps bundle, start with re-flashing that. if still no good then go for the all ROM.
But you say that it also happened with stock rom so finding the app that's causing that its crucial.
Also note the apps that stay open in the background (click the 2 Squares) only nine stay open but all you need its a game to keep eating all the resources.

I've begun by uninstalling OneFootball and Facebook and performance has improved somewhat. This might be quite a long process as im going go leave a day or so between each action.
I have fully reinstalled before, but selected to restore data and apps from backup. Maybe I'll try setting up as a new device if it comes to it. Want to avoid that tho.

Did you find a solution? I'm facing about the same issue with my HTC One Mini 2 after installing CM12. It ran perfectly smooth in the beginning but now it is soooo slow and it takes forever to load almost any apps (especially Facebook and Snapchat).

I think it's either Facebook or Facebook Messenger, probably more messenger.
I first uninstalled Facebook Messenger and performance improved. Still a little glitchy, but much better.
Then I uninstalled Facebook. Not much change.
Facebook is now reinstalled, but messenger isn't and I've been happier with the phone.
I'm still getting some background apps crashing, but not as much as before uninstalling FB messenger.
Not really a 'solution' as it could be different for you, but as mentioned previously, start uninstalling an app at a time. Leave a few days inbetween so you can tell if it changed anything. If not, reinstall and try again.
Same issue here with mini 2..i dont have facebook or that football app
