Not sure if it is a coincidence but twice I installed the google camera app and I ended up with can't connect to camera error message even after uninstalling.
Uninstalling google camera then clearing data from the note pro camera did not fix the issue, it worked for couple of secons then kept crashing.
I have the dev rom installed
or it might be a loose cable inside, just shook the phone and it worked...
might need to lay off the drink until later on tonight.

Hello All users!!
I am dealing with a Camera error on my MOTO-X. I've searched about this error and couldn't find any thread about this.
Take a look in that screenshot, it always happens.
When I clear cache, stop process and restart phone, it used to work, but on next minutes locks again.
I have initialize the camera with a ADB logcat working, and i can see that /dev/video0 is busy. It sounds like any other process owning the camera
I have post the logcat too.
help please...

What apps do you have that can take pictures? Instagram, Snapchat, etc?
moto x camera

Actually none. Ive just factory reset.
I had the same problem. Booting into safe mode would sometimes get the camera to initialize .but the screen was crazy laggy. And taking a picture would just break it again. I thought out was Snapchat at first. But did factory resets and it still did it. I wish I could help but I didn't find anything that fixes it. It's got to be hardware related...
I have a new Moto x now so I am no longer in your boat
I never tried to root or downgrade the boot loader or anything like that. And no water damage at all

try another factory reset...
snapchat and vsco cam and flashlight apps were the #1 causes for me. had to make sure all those apps were closed before trying to open the regular camera.
Camera Error
I cant test right now, coz since yesterday i got no error.
As soon as i got that error again, ( it should happens on next hours) i will test in safe mode. By the way, I have already tested error in safe mode before and it persisted, allthought i will test again.
I have also disable apps like hangout, google+, and other G-stuffs, and got error anyway. I thought that might be the quick camera (2 quick shakes), and disable it in Camera app. No results.
Some days ago I got a other kind of error, googled and saw others like me, where the rear camera stop working and just the selfie works. When I start the camera it goes to selfie, and the button that swap cameras was gone. I solved that clearing the cache by fastboot . But this happened way after the "Unable to Initialize" error.
just informing if it may have any relashionship
Mine started doing this because the camera module was installed incorrectly. Had to send it in and deal with their oh so lovely 3 week turnaround.
Do you have any sort of flashlight apps installed?
No apps

Any resolution to this? I'm receiving the camera error as well. I've wiped cache and factory reset twice now, and no luck.
All signs point to hardware issue? Is this something Verizon can replace in-store?

Hi, my back facing camera does not work suddenly.
The only camera working is the front facing camera. there is no option to turn the camera around to use the back facing one. I have tried other apps but there are no options to do so.

try clearing cache/dalvik in recovery
download google camera from the app store, that's what i did. i think the factory camera app is buggy
How to get to recovery?
Problem with frontal camera
I have a similar problem with the frontal camera, it shows a black spot, I tried the Google Camera as well and it's the same thing, I unlock the bootloader and I'm not sure if my warranty will be validated.
Any suggestions?
I'm having the same problem, now about 3 days after rooting. Is this a coincidence, or did I mess something up? The only modifications I've made with root are the XPrivacy and Gravitybox Xposed modules. I haven't made any camera tweaks and made sure all the permissions are available in Xprivacy.
edit: Tried clearing the cache; didn't help. Went back and looked at Xprivacy's Usage Data, and found that even though I hadn't disabled any specific permissions for the moto camera, a top-level toggle was switched on. Turning this off fixed the issue.
I've had a similar issue where HDR on crashes Google camera and stock cam. Turning it off fixes it, but I'd like to use HDR.
Anyone else?

I am having the same problem - back camera suddenly stopped working, but the front still does. Tried uninstalling updates to the stock camera app, clearing cache (through recovery as well), installing other camera apps (Google Camera), and even booting into safe mode (3rd party apps disabled). No luck.
I'm not even rooted, nor have I tried. Anyone else have this problem/solve it/have other suggestions? Appreciated. Rather not send in for a full device replacement, if I can avoid it.
Same here
Hi I am having the same issue, the back facing camera stopped working two days ago. I'm not rooted either.

It seems to have, in fact, solved itself (I think with one of the Camera app's updates, but it's hard to say for sure). It went back and forth for a while, but it has been stable for the past few weeks.

Same here. I contacted Motorola and they are replacing the phone under warranty. Their support rep ran through the standard cache clear/default app/etc steps and then issued an RMA. It's currently on its way to Texas. I wonder what kind of warranty the replacement phone will have.

So I performed a factory reset and it still didn't fix it. A day later it randomly worked for 2 hours, then went back to no working. Maybe there is a loose wire or connection in it? I'm going to try calling Motorola for a replacement. I'm assuming I just call their standard customer service number?
this really seems to be a problem. i managed to get mine back for a while on my first Turbo by FXz'ing, but eventually it crapped out again. Hopefully Lollipop will have a better camera app whenever it finally comes out.

I'm sure you already took care of this but I always use their chat support. Very fast and works great from a mobile.

Hi, my back facing camera does not work suddenly.

My Nexus 6 is unable to start the camera. The google camera app hangs when it starts and nothing shows up. Earlier the camera used to open but it lagged a bit when HDR was on. Now the camera isn't opening anymore. The other apps like Instagram that use the camera are also not able to open it. The app opens up and hangs, nothing shows up just black screen and sometimes the message "Can't connect to Camera" appears. This issue came after 5.1 and I also had buzz launcher installed once but then I removed it. The phone is less than 7 months old and I bought it online from Flipkart (Indian e-commerce site).
What I've tried:
Forced stop the app (Google Camera)
Cleared cache of the app
Booted in recovery mode and wiped cache partition
Factory reset the device
Nothing worked for me, I tried these steps one by one and then tested the camera but it is still not working. Please help me with this, I paid a lot of money for this phone on my own and it feels really bad and annoying that the camera isn't functional anymore.
Thanks in advance.

You could try a different camera app.
Camera FV-5.
Camera is a nightmare
Here's my issue with the camera:
I've been on lollipop for a while and I haven't had a problem with it, until the camera decided to take a vacation on me. When it comes to taking pictures, the phone crashes and an icon shows my battery is dead, this happens on a full to half life, so I'm not sure what it's trying to pull here. I've cleared and cleaned the phone, my last option is to reset, though I have a feeling this won't work, since I'll still need the latest android update, so I'm back to square one.
The latest issue Is when it comes to uploading pictures, the phone crashes with the same error sequence.
And the finally issue is the sound the device makes sometimes with the camera. Which is curious because I am careful but it looks like I'm having issues from different sources. I'd like to rule out the software side first.
For the time being, I've disabled the camera completely.

From the Google product forums it looks like a failure of the camera app to close properly after use.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!category-topic/nexus/using-the-camera/aY0X1QiGuhY
Either by use of a 3rd party app that uses the camera or the flashlight. Also it seems that using face unlock can cause the issue.
That being said, and you've reset the device... Have you tried the camera right after the reset (without 3rd party apps)?

Yes, I tried the camera just after the reset and it did not work. I think the OS should be responsible to handle the apps and how are they being closed. Google is not working upto the mark on this. I still need help

Sadly, it seems like you have 2 options, sucking it up and installing another camera or RMA the device.
I wish that wasn't the case for you, I'm disappointed too. I love this phone.

Front Facing Camera and Flashlight works perfectly, well if I open a camera app, the flashlight would sometimes stop working completely and can't turn it on from the quick settings till I reboot my phone. Tried factory resetting, clearing cache, flashed another ROM all with no luck. It worked perfectly last week and all of a sudden stopped working when i was trying to take a picture. I'm thinking it's a software issue because of the flashlight problem, but i'm not to sure yet.
Anyone can help? The same thing happened on my Nexus 6 camera ??

I have a problem with the camera. It always works only 1-2 minutes after restarting the phone, than crash with "Camera failed" warning. I have restarted, cleared cache and data, tried another photo app, started mobile in safe mode, put mobile to factory settings. The problem persists. Could it be a HW problem? Thanks.
I have a new observation. When the camera doesn't work, the auto-rotate screen doesn't work either. After rebooting, both the camera and the tilt sensor work for about 1 minute.
Hi, @piotrusiek720
Have you tried using Open Camera from F-droid?
I am using Open Camera on a N9 (Android 10, One UI 2.5, with June 2022 Android security patch), and also use it on a Note20 Ultra.
Before installing Open Camera, I uninstalled the Samsung camera apk and associated apps via adb.
