I know Tasker has been around for a while and a lot of people swear by it. I downloaded the 7-day trial and am trying it out, seems pretty powerful but also pretty complex. Wondering if people are using it and what for?
These are the simple things I use Tasker for:
- Lower sound volume at night and bring it back at morning.
- Enable vibration when I set an high ringer volume and disable when I lower it.
- Hourly chime (voice announcement).
- Pop-up GPS settings when I launch Maps.
- Play a reminder sound every three minutes when there are missed calls, SMS or mails.
these are the things I use it for:
-turn on nfc when I use the google wallet app/ and turn it off when i exit the app
- turn on gps when I open the maps app/ and turn it off when i exit the app
-turn on mobile hotspot when i enter the car and it connects to my car's bluetooth/ turns it off when disconnected from the car's bluetooth
limitless possibilities.
@Giocarro How do you make a "GPS pop-up"? I have Tasker set to just automatically turn on GPS when I open maps... but I think a popup is better bc sometimes I'm just searching for a location so I don't need it to automatically turn on location every time I enter maps.
@lilvanmuzz How did you set up the last one with turning on bluetooth automatically and turning it off automatically when entering/exiting your car's bluetooth?!
Thanks guys

Application -> Maps -> Taskname -> Settings -> Locations settings.
In bluetooth, click the invert as a exit task. That means, that when bluetooths gets disconnected. Then you just chose what it should do and you of course choose turn BT off.
You can even choose a name, so it only turn off when you DC from car BT and not all BT devices.

Some great ideas right there buddy :good:
-silent mode at work --> loud on exit
-auto rotate enabled when using galery, photos, youtube, remote desktop --> locked on exit
-30 minute screen timeout in certain apps --> 1 min on exit
-GPS on when in Google & Maps --> disabled on exit
-NFC on when in wallet -- off on exit
-a whole project just for nighttime silent mode since the times change from day to day for me.

Thanks for these! Definitely some great ideas. Just wondering, what is DND? Also, I'm trying to set up a profile for when I use my wireless charger in my car (as opposed to my other wireless charger)... This may be better suited to ask in a Tasker forum, but I'll give it a shot here. So my phone is oriented vertically in my car charger vs. flat on the other charger. Is there a way to only trigger the profile when it's charging wirelessly in a vertical position?

Any way to do this with non-root on Lollipop? Worked great with Kit-Kat. Lollipop took it away.

Yes it can, by emulating manual input using the tasker plugin AutoInput. Did it myself on the S6 before root was available.
Just wanted to write an update on my experience with Tasker over the last few weeks... Wow! What an amazing application. You are only limited by your imagination, or, more so, just the ability to figure out exactly how to make it do what you want. I have profiles to turn off my wifi when the screen is off, also night profiles to dim the screen/silence notifications, etc. Those are all common easy things to set up. Then I really got into it - set up a profile that triggers when I tap my nfc keychain to enter car mode. I have a wireless charging dock in my car, and when I get texts they are read aloud to me, and then I'm asked if I want to respond. If I say yes, I then speak my message. My message is read back to me and I'm asked if I want to send or edit. This is a great, truly hands free way of using your phone (especially with new or already existing laws regarding use of phones in cars). I also just set it up (using the autovoice, autolaunch and autoinput plugins) to control the Sonos system in my house. I can say "Play Sonos in the kitchen," or the patio, or the family room, and it will automatically do it. I could also place nfc tags in those rooms to trigger the same tasks as well. Are all these things "necessary"? Maybe not, but for me the coolness factor is off the chart. [emoji2]

The coolness factor of Tasker and what you can do is wayyyy beyond off the charts!!
A bit late to the party but here goes:
- toggle autorotate if I shake the phone left-right
- if connected to car bluetooth, set variable %CarMode to 1, which I then use in other profiles. On exit (bluetooth disconnect) set %CarMode to 0
- if text message received and %CarMode is 1, read the text aloud (read texts aloud while driving)
- monitor Llama notification to see what location I'm in (based on Cell towers). I think Llama is more accurate and easier to use then Tasker for cell towers and volume profiles
- If leaving Llama location "Work", during the week, after 4pm, send my wife a text to say I'm leaving work. Randomize the content of that text from a list, so it doesn't ever seem automated to her
- log my work hours onto a Google Drive spreadsheet automatically by using the Llama location
- Perform a weekly reboot, on Sundays at 5am. I just think it's good to do every now and again
- Last gasp alert - If my battery level reaches 2%, get a GPS fix and send the location to my tablet. That way if I've misplaced the phone and it runs out of battery, I'll know where it is
- At night, enable Lux plugin, which removes blue light from the screen to help you fall asleep quicker if you're like me and insist on playing on phone at night. Disable in the morning. I do this because I think it uses battery during the day otherwise
- if headset plugged in, show a custom scene I created to choose my music/listening app
- watch Chrome notification for one that says I'm in incognito mode. Put the phone on silent mode if that happens....for browsing stuff......
- If my battery has dropped more than 15% in the last hour, alert me. This helps me spot crappy apps that are sucking my power
- turn my phone onto silent if I turn the phone off, to disable the annoying boot animation sound
- if I use the camera app, turn the phone onto silent, to prevent shutter sound
- a custom clipboard manager that stores the last 5 things I copied, let's me choose any of them when I want to paste something
- If I copy something on my laptop, send it to my phone
- watch the latest USd-GBP exchange rate, watch the latest stock price for some stock I own. Work out my GBP stock value and tell me daily how much they're worth and if I've made/lost money

Nice list btw. Wondering why you don't just delete the boot sounds as opposed to making an extra task to silence your phone on shut down. I'm assuming if you have this many tasks, you must be rooted, but maybe not?

I'm trying to set it up on my NC so that the WiFi turns off when the screen turns off. I'm following directions I've found on the net, but I can't seem to find the right condition.
I set up a WiFi off profile, and set it to turn wifi off, and under conditions, I have the following options,
Add Condition
Time Period
Calendar Keywords
Location
Incoming Call
Missed Call
Unread Text/SMS
Battery
Wired Headset Attached
Connected BT device
Connected to WiFi
Docking State
Profile status
I'm trying to get it to quit rebooting after the screen shuts off. It's becoming quite an annoyance, but not being able to find this setting is driving me more crazy.
Any one have this running and working?
there should be a screen status condition. you have to click inverse logic after selecting it. unsure why you're not seeing it :-\ but it also looks like you're missing some other conditions too. i have many more than that on the free version. screen status is at the bottom for me.

Yeah, Screen Status is the last condition on the list for me too, on the Lite version.

I installed Tasker a while ago, and have it doing a few things, but I see in different threads some people doing some really cool stuff, so I was wondering, what do you use Tasker for?
Just last night I figured out how to get it to tell me who is calling me if I have my headphones with a mic plugged in. The only other thing I've done is make auto-rotation turn on when I open Gallery and turn off when I exit.
Trying to think of other stuff to get it to do.

There's a Tasker Wiki that has some good profile ideas here:
http://tasker.wikidot.com/
Here's all the stuff I have setup through Tasker right now, haha:
- Phone brightness goes to lowest level from midnight-6am.
- Silent mode turns on when headphones are plugged in.
- Silent mode turns on when phone is positioned face down.
- Silent mode turns on, Wifi/GPS/BT turn off between 8am-5pm (when I'm at work).
- TweetDeck/Voodoo App start up on boot.
- Data usage check via SMS automatically at 6:30am every day.
- GPS/BT turn off when I'm connected to Wifi, turn on when Wifi is out of range.
- Silent mode turns on when FxCamera is opened.
- GPS is turned on when RunKeeper is opened.
- Auto-rotate is turned on when certain apps are opened.
Tasker is easily the best app I've bought in the Market. PowerAMP is a close 2nd. Haha.

yea, I go to that website too. I use it to turn GPS on and off for certain applications. I also downloaded the profile from the wiki to locate my phone if i lose it.
I think I just got the idea from being frustrated that the gallery hides the pull-down bar. It's simple though:
New task>context>Gallery
Display>rotation>on
It automatically turns itself off without having to add an exit task. As a matter of fact, if you add an exit task to turn rotation back off, it gets stuck sometimes.

I also have mine set up to turn on screen filter at night so I don't get blinded when I look at my phone.
Lets see... I never messed around with it too much but I got it to do a few things.
-When I plug in USB, it automatically opens the notification bar so that I can mount it. Not much, but it makes it that much easier.
-When a headphone is plugged in, I have set my media volume down low to protect my ears and it also opens up my music player app automatically.
-From 7:25AM until 2:28PM, my phone automatically enters silent mode for school.
I have only owned Tasker for a few days but already find it indispensable and reason enough to never ever touch a fruity phone again. In the past week I have set up the following on my phone, most of them home-brewed:
1) Screen timeout to 7s when phone placed screen down
2) GPS auto start in apps that need GPS - maps, navigate, places, tracks, etc
3) Set screen timeout to 1hr in certain apps where I am likley to spend more than 30s without touching the screen - internet, reader, NY times, dirty jokes
4) Launch music player when headset plugged it, kill it when headset removed
5) Two sets of night modes - Mon-Fri and Sat-Sunday. They do the same stuff but with different trigger times - all sounds and vibrations except ringer off, no mobile date, no screen rotation. There are few things that are more frustrating than fumbling for my phone while in bed in the morning only to have the screen rotate on me. Ditto for late at night when I might be using the phone in bed lying on my side.
6) Turn Airplane mode on two minutes after loss of service, turn it off two minutes after service is restored. Prevents the phone from pissing away battery when there is no service. Would have preferred to do that based on signal strength but my phone does not report that correctly.
7) Vibrate for all email and messaging apps I use. The developers of many apps do bonehead things such as ignoring the system setting for "Vibrate on notify". Therefore even though my profile #5 above tells the phone not to vibrate at night GMail, Handcent and others will happily ignore you and wake you up. I have set them not to vibrate, then intercept their notifications with Tasker and trigger a vibration from within Tasker. I only wish there was an OR setting for that, so I don't have to maintain separate profiles for each app
8) Wifi auto stop/start when I am near a home cell tower. I also turn off mobile data.
9) Call home mode when I text "Where are you?" to my phone. The phone auto-replies with its GPS coordinates and address.
10) Voice SMS toggle widget - the phone will read my texts to me, e.g., if I am in the car and expect to be there for a while.
Things I wish Tasker would do:
1) Correctly recognize busy/free slots on my calendar. I could then set the phone to mute every time I have a meeting scheduled on my calendar. This would reduce the chance of my phone singing to me in the middle of a meeting... I like big butts and I cannot lie... you catch the drift. The current version claims it can do it but the functionality is broken on my phone. Not sure if it is a custom ROM issue or a Tasker issue.
2) Toggle 2G and 3G. This is not Taskfer's fault, but I really would like to be able to switch to 2G every time Wifi is on, or while I am near a cell tower at work. The signal strength inside the buildings at work is pathetic and leaving 3G on drains the battery big time as the phone continuously tries to boos the signal
3) Some type of readout from the orientation sensors. Imagine all the stupid pet tricks we could do if we had access to orientation-based scripting. Disabling screen rotation wen the phone is nearly horizontal comes to mind. I think Screebl can do that but why pay $2 extra just for that when Tasker ought to be able to do it just as well.
I've had Tasker for a while, and generally like it. It is crazy-powerful, but also crazy-difficult to learn how to use it to its full potential.
right now, only a couple things I use it for but I plan to use it more:
-when I turn my car on and it connects to the BT, it will automatically turn on GPS, Pandora and turn up the media volume (in case it was turned down before).
-when I turn the car off, GPS turns off and Pandora closes
-When I'm at work, a different ringtone is enabled and all volumes is turned down.
-when I leave work, my normal ringtone is re-enabled and all volumes are back high.
I really love Tasker. My 2 main uses are
1. Between the hours of 10pm and 6am, Tasker mutes my phone. If a call comes, it sends a text message to caller saying that I'm down for the night. If it's an emergency, the caller will have other numbers they can call. If I get a text message, it sends a auto reply of some sort but if it deals with golf, it will turn up the volume and play a song from Caddie Shack. I don't want to miss out on an early tee time!
2. I use Macs and have a music service set up that plays music throughout the house using various Airport Expresses and speakers via Airfoil. Speakers that I'm always playing to are the outdoor speakers (I live out in the country so let it rip!). I use Tasker to control volume, change stations or music services (Slacker, Pandora, iTunes, etc) and other music/video related items. The main conduit being iChat on the Mac and Google Talk on my Android thus being within range of the wireless access point is not necessary. Using SL4A and Python on the Android with Tasker allows for some very powerful scripting to happen. This in turn gets sent to the Mac via Google Talk and converted to applescripts for controlling all the apps and devices. The best part is that it's very powerful but easy to program, inexpensive and most important. very very reliable! Try that with a Sonos or Logitech Squeezebox.
Ummm… maybe I should write up details about this setup...
how to change pandora station?
Sorry for the noob reply to such an old post, but have been looking all over these forums and elsewhere and just can't find the answer. How did you use tasker to change pandora stations? If not Pandora, any other Internet radio service would do. Eventual goal is to set up some presets in Car Home to select channels while driving in a single touch, and I can use whichever web service executes this function best.
Thanks!
TuneinRadioPro has a Car Mode Screen thst may meet your need, without tasker.

Hi all,
I've had a search around but couldn't find this particular issue discussed.
I have a N1 running CM7. When the phone is plugged in (either on my desk, or in the car) the screen will auto dim to a very low level after approx. 20 seconds after last touch.
This happens if the brightness is set to auto or a manual level. I've gone through all the settings I can find but couldn't find anything regarding this. I have got developer > stay awake enabled, which I guess stops the screen from actually sleeping, but it still goes dim.
The CM7 auto dim settings are disabled.
Any advice folks? I want the screen to not auto-dim after 20 seconds. Out of interest, the 'Car Widget Pro' widget seems to be able to force the brightness if you choose something other than 'auto' in the widget settings. So perhaps I am missing something somewhere else?
It's a real PITA when trying to navigate in the car with google maps as whenever I touch the screen to get the brightness back it disables gps tracking and I have to re-hit the icon, which is distracting whilst driving..
Here's hoping..
Hey, I'm only posting because I had a very similar issue. What I did was go into display settings (while connected via USB) and changed the timeout to one minute (or whatever you want). For me, when I went to change the timeout, no item was selected by default. This happened to me after I installed WidgetLocker for some reason. I doubt I will help but I had a very similar issue...

I've been playing around with Tasker trying to detect when Touchless Controls are summoned to disable Airplane mode(Secure Settings).
Does anyone have a profile for this because I was pretty close to getting it to work but I had a couple of issues. I was able to get it to perform the task when Touchless Controls were active. I would have it disable Airplane Mode, close Touchless Controls and launch Voice Controls but even using the Wait command I wasn't able to get it to launch Voice Controls once the internet connection was established.
I must have been setting the task wrong, I also noticed even though I used the If parameter for Airplane Mode Set, it would close the Touchless controls if Airplane Mode wasn't enabled.

I would think the easiest way, and I'm throwing this out there , is to enable airplane mode when the screen is off and disable it when the screen is on. quick and simple.

UPDATE: Ok i figured out what was wrong. Instead of checking AIR is Set, I needed to specify *on* and *off* so
Currently the task is
1 If %AIR Is *on*
2 Secure Settings, Airplane Mode Disabled (There may be a 3 second delay here or on the next step)
3 Kill App Touchless Control
4 Wait X seconds (3-4 seconds seems to be optimal)
5 Load App Voice Search (Can set If %AIR Is *off* may help)

It was tricky finding it, using the Application Context even when I selected all I wasn't able to initially find Touchless Controls. I searched for it in ES File Explorer and made a copy of it to another folder and launched the properties and suddenly I was able to locate it in Tasker, not sure what actually made it show though.
Your suggestion sounds like a pretty considerable method, I'll give it a shot. I think the main issue is that I'm not able to get enough of a delay between turning Airplane mode off and launching Voice Search because the connection doesn't fully establish yet.
Currently the task is
1 If %AIR Is Set
2 Secure Settings, Airplane Mode Disabled
3 Kill App Touchless Control
4 Wait (tried variable times, it didn't seem to make a diff. I also tried Wait Until %Air ! Set)
5 Load App Voice Search (Tried If %Air ! Set, didn't seem to help)

oddly enough I don't even get the option to set airplane mode in secure settings but I see the dilemma you're running into .. in my 'scientific test' I would disable all radios minus the actual cellular. Then from there let the screen sleep. Speak a command and it would light up, kicking on the Bluetooth and Data radios in a instant, then jump straight to the google voice prompt long before wireless was connected, buuuuuut, I had bluetooth, and Mobile data load almost immediately upon the screen lighting up. Do you specifically need wifi or can you use mobile data until wifi is up?

You'll need to load Secure Settings App and download Helper under one of the tabs on the top (There is a 4.1+ alternative)
Also to mess with Airplane on 4.2+ firmware you need an Xposed module, just search Airplane.. it says Jellybean but it works fine with KitKat.
I added another tidbit to the task so it will vibrate if I launch Touchless Controls with Airplane enabled, that way I realize not to speak until the second beep. Not sure why but it didn't function well when I added it to the same task so I created another Touchless App context profile and a task that just vibrates but it could just be me.
The only other issue is making sure Super SU settings remembers Secure Settings is permitted, that was an issue when it was slow to recognizing permissions.
I also created an App (using Tasker Factory) out of Airplane Mode enabled task so I can just say Ok Google Now, Launch Airplane (I also have a Screen Off app)
Everything is working good now
How did you end up getting Tasker to recognize whether or not Touchless Controls was active? I'm trying to get Tasker to turn on the wifi, (sometimes I turn it off, then use TC--but it doesn't have data, so it's useless), when TC is called.

You should just be able to set the profile to run on the TC app (I forget all the specific names, but one of the profile trigger actions is 'apps')

I don't have Touchless Controls as an app--just Touchless Controls Settings.

Not for me
any idea how to set up Tasker to turn on airplane mode at a specific time and turn it off at a specific time? The idea is to have airplane mode turned on at say 1am and turned off at 7am. Anyone?
Hi,
I often use the RunKeeper application when I make long walks. In all my previous phones, the GPS kept working when I turned off the display and put the phone in my pocket. In the mi 5, however, it seems like the GPS stopped functioning as soon as I turn off the display put the phone in my pocket. When I take it back out, it shows the same position that I was at when I put the phone in my pocket, and within a few seconds it is updated to my actual position.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a matter of settings (maybe even permissions)? Same happens with navigation apps like Waze - if I put another application to run in the foreground, such as Youtube, then Waze (while still working in the background) loses my location, and when I switch back to it after some time, it takes a few seconds to show me my new location.
Thanks,
Shlomy
Hi,
This has happened to me also while using the Starva app and the reason is MIUI doesn't allow to use the Location in Background.
To allow that, go to
Settings -> Battery & Performance -> Power -> App Battery Saver
and select the app you want. Then you'll see that Background location is Restrict. Make it Allow and you're good to go.
Regards,
Samitha
Thanks so much! Almost got me to try custom roms because of that.
