Google Camera crashing - anyone have a fix yet? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running chroma but others are reporting this in other roms as well. I thought the issue started right about when the camera apk got an upgrade this week, which brought faster HDR processing, etc. Mine crashes randomly. Not every pic, not every 5...just when it wants to crash. Seems HDR mode brings it on more often. If it crashes, the pic I was taking doesn't get saved either, which sucks. I tried reverting back to the December camera apk thinking that would fix it, but it's still happening with that. So I'm now thinking it's either related to some other google services, possibly the overhauled photos app?
Anyone else have a guess? It's frustrating.

Have you tried clearing the application data and application cache in settings?

yeah. And it's been fully removed numerous times as well.

I don't have a Nexus 6 but I have a Note 2 with an AOSP ROM /5.1.1 Lollipop and the google camera crashes. I have to reboot the phone. This has been going on since that app came out. They can never seem to fix it

works perfectly here(on 5.1.1 and on M).

Take a few HDR photos in a row. I guarantee it'll stop working. You don't even have to take them fast.

no, i use the aosp gallery app and i do not upload my photos. the only photos that get saved are what i upload and post on g+. i ran m for 9 days or so, and it never crashed. but i did find a camera bug on m. if you are taking a photo with the flash on, and tap on any part of the screen to focus, itll onlways refocus on the very middle, then shoot.
oh, btw, i am using the terminus rom.

I've found that if I could 6 seconds between each shot, the issue does not occur. Or if I scroll to the pic and watch the HDR processing bar finish, then take another pic...the issue does not occur. If I do take multiple shots without much time in between, it always crashes. Doesn't matter what rom I use.

im using terminus rom, this version https://goo.gl/ojD6Z6
with banks gapps, and vindicator kernel. all flashed via twrp. if my camera crashed, id be the first person ticked off about it, as i use my camera so often. has anyone that has the camera crash tried clearing app data for the camera? or even tried running a fix_permissions?

I've experienced the camera multiple HDR+ picture crashing also. It happens to me on every single AOSP ROM except Omni for some reason. Doesn't occur on stock either (haven't tried it on M).

yes, done all of that. Just did it again for fun. I also tried getting rid of "photos", using the stock gallery instead...which effectively disabled any cloud sync stuff. Still crashes.
I'll summarize again: crashes only when using HDR+ and taking pictures quickly. If you wait 5-6 seconds between shots it doesn't crash. However, if it does crash it will delete all the photos you took.

I do have the same problem but only when it has less than 40% battery. Camera app crash and turn off the device. It only happens with camera google app. with high battery charge does not happen at all.

well, Play Store just updated me to 2.5.052 Camera. My fingers were crossed. Still crashes if you take HDR pics too quickly, in succession.

It still crashes on HDR pics

I can confirm that running 100% stock nexus6 5.1.1 rom (with root), the camera does not crash no matter how hard I try. As much as I like chroma and the other aosp based roms, I guess I'll stick to stock for now.

Possible 720p camcorder fix for CyanogenMod.

Instead of trying to keep up on the two CM threads that are already going and talking about the exact same things I figured I would start up a new thread and see if this fixes anything.
--------------
I will admit... I don't know jack about programming... but I am good at messing with stuff and seeing if it works. I got a little bored tonight and noticed there was a new change to the MIUI ROM that adds 720p recording. So being Halloween... why not Frankenstein a little!
I grabbed the camera.apk from the MIUI ROM (its an AOSP ROM.. so it should work right? lolz). Copied it over to my clean install of CM6.1 RC2 and boom... no crashing recording using 720p.
I have recorded about 30 videos now that are anywhere from 2 seconds in length to 5 minutes... one after another... without a crash.
There are a couple options missing that CM has... but I think this would be a good start to resolving the issues.
Please keep in mind.... there are a couple things you will need to do.
1. Download the following APK. (see below)
2. Using root explorer... browse to /system/app and check the current permissions for the existing camera.apk. It should be rw-r--r--.
3. Copy the downloaded camera.apk and replace the one in /system/app.
4. Change the permissions of the new camera.apk to rw-r--r--.
5.Close root explorer and reboot your phone.
6. Open the camera app, switch to camcorder. Using the onscreen menu, change the quality setting from high to custom.
6. Now select the top option to change the video quality. Select 720p.
7. Profit.
If you don't know how to change permissions... or know how to copy apks... please.. please.. please don't do this. If you are comfortable with it... let me know if it keeps crashing.
I know it doesn't have all the fancy settings the CM camera does... but I think this may be a very good step forward. So far.. It hasn't crashed out on me.
If you are going to do this and record one video and say its fixed... please dont bother. We need REAL testing.
The camera.apk can be downloaded here....
http://www.mediafire.com/?q9y8zst9aeqlgc7
Thanks all... if this ends up not working... I blame the to much beer.
If it does... we may be on a good start to getting this fixed. Cheers.
Oh yea... if you are using the camcorder.. you can turn of the screen and it wont force close when you turn it back on. Win.
Here's an update.zip for it. Flash via recovery. Also added the original CM camera from the Incredible build. I'll post a few cameras for you guys to test.
Thanks goes to the OP for getting this in motion.

Thank you... I'll admit it... I fail. lol. Just trying to be of some help getting this fixed.
I have tried the Nexus camera.apk in the past... it had the same issue.
It seems that the 720p issue exists on most if not all of the CM builds.
The only difference I see from face value is that CM camera builds have the crazy auto focus. If you are in a quiet place, listen to the camera itself. It physiclly moves inside the housing.
If you ever happen to hear the camcorder app FC, you can hear a little "click" right before it force closes. That is the camera lens moving.
It appears that the auto focus is messing everything up. Without autofocus (the MIUI camera.apk)... everything appears to work as it should.
As soon as you throw in the fancy auto focus stuff... it causes crashes.
Food for thought. I don't know a lot about it... but progress is progress.
Thank you for a zip version, Root explorer doesn't work on AOSP roms for me, is this common across the board?

Works for me. Are you sure you gave it root access in SU with the remember button ticked?
Also, good to see that somebody took the initiative. I had posted in the CM forum this afternoon that the MIUI Rom had functioning cam but nobody seemed to notice and I don't have much skills - glad to see camalus did - going to try this right away...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8931211#post8931211
I swapped the MIUI camera with root explorer and recorded 10 videos in 720p. The camera didn't fc on me at all. The videos looked good and playbacked smoothly on my phone and computer. The camera at times would get hung up for a second or two but I'm not complaining at all. Got a working camera now!
I just found that if you turn the focus mode to off in the camera settings with the camera that comes with cm6, this also allows you to record in 720p with no force closes. Funny its such an easy fix. As long as auto focus doesn't mean the world to you.
I have suspected for a while that the auto focus was causing issues.
I just loaded the patch on the newest nightly... no fc either.
I sent a message to koush on twitter. Hoping his intelligence can pinpoint this in more depth.
Here's to hoping!

Works perfectly for me. Taken 4 test videos in quick succession, no issues whatsoever.
Did not realize this was even an open issue. I believed this was already in the CM6.1 chain for inclusion in RC3 or whatever.
Ok. Just wanted to report my findings after flashing the zip file. The only settings I change in the camera was quality to custom in order to get the 720 resolution enabled.
Video #1: 1 min, 22 sec
I stopped recording of first video and without closing the camera app I started a 2nd video,
Video #2: Started recording and the camera freezed (FC would have been better) after 22 seconds. Had to pull out the battery to restart the phone.
In summary, is still not fixed. I'll revert back to the original Camera.apk.

[FIX] Possible fix for CM 6.1 Camera FC issues-MERGED 20101122

The fix below has been merged into the nightlies!! expect to see it on the 23rd.
If you're impatient, you can install a compiled version of the apk from recovery...
---------------
The camera issue is for ALL of cyanogenmod, not just us dinc users.
I've grabbed some of the patches that are being worked on and put some of my own work into it.
Please let me know what you find.
For me, it crashes almost every single time if I use continuous focus, but it's fine with infinity.
Screen off and on works without FC, but the camera is hard coded to not allow recording with screen off.
1. Backup
2. Flash aosp-camera-fix-v1.0.zip
3. reboot..
flashed
Just flashed, off to a meeting but will report back shortly. I would love to be able to shoot video in 720.
in to see the responses
no issues
No FC in continuous or infinity mode. Shot about 10 minutes of video in both. Screen off then on kills recording. Still no 720p recording mode though (not that this was supposed to fix that, I was just hoping).
Recap: No camera/video FC in either mode (continuous or infinity)
Thanks for this

hi seanzer. on cm nightly build #161 - issue: when on videocam, and i turn off the screen (recording or not), when you unlock, the videocam becomes almost half the size of the screen (with the preview screen almost a quarter the size, and is now on the lower left), and it's unresponsive.

anyone know? is this the same with all aosp roms?.. the camera just isn't as good as the htc cam.
Fixed my Nexus One
Installed on CM 6.1 on a Nexus One, fixed the camera for photos, haven't tested the videos.
Symptoms: Camera keeps crashing after a few shots. Force Close the application and if I tried to run it I only got a blackscreen until the Force Close window appeared.
It also rebooted my phone one 2 occasions.
Installed using Rom Manager:
Install from SD
Selected .zip
Backup Rom (Yes)
Wipe (NO!!!)
Everything went smooth.
Now I'm taking pictures, modifying settings, Touch Focus, everything seems to work.
Took 20 pictures in a row and fast.
Thanks for the fix
I had high expectations on this one, I tried it but I still get FC on the camera.

If you look at the resolution of the 8mp wide setting on the stock sense camera, it's not actually 8mp. It's really the same as 6mp wide on the CM camera.

[Q] Front Facing Camera Upside Down/Inverted

I got my Nexus 6 a couple days ago, and have noticed that on Snapchat and Hangouts the front-facing camera shows upside down. On Snapchat, it even utilizes the accelerometer to ensure that no matter the rotation, my face is always hanging down from the sky. Very annoying.
Anyone figure this out? I plan on factory resetting my phone later today and starting from scratch to see if it's a problem incorporating settings from my old phone.

These type of issues usually occur with new devices running the new OS - aka 'initial bugs'

Factory reset fixed the issues I mentioned in my post. I suspect they were caused by importing data/settings from my previous device, which had a different version of the OS.

Nexus 6 portrait orientation is 270 instead of 90
The developers of these apps assume that the orientation for portrait mode is 90 degrees. From some reason on Nexus 6 it should be 270 degrees. Developers of camera apps should follow the code example at: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/hardware/Camera.html#setDisplayOrientation(int)
Yup, for the most part - it isn't your phone, its the app in question.

I use an app called Open Camera, and have no issues.
I "fixed" this problem by uninstalling the updates on my Google Camera app. I guess something in one of the updates inverts the pics taken. At least, this was the "solution" on my Nexus 6. I re-installed the latest update to the camera and the problem came back.

HDR+ port by defcomk
Here is something that works for me:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4UT4dU4LpjJZFZnbGJ1TXVJN2c/view?usp=sharing
Make sure CAM2 API is enabled.
If you are on stock ROM it can be done by adding this line to build.prop:
Code:
persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1
If on a custom nougat ROM use this module: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4UT4dU4LpjJRWY1dzBBUTdHbm8
If on Oreo custom ROM, cam2 is enabled by default.
To use the camera it follow these steps:
1) Open the app, change video resolution of back camera to 4K (VERY IMPORTANT, else there will be FC)
2) On the camera menu you'll notice it's not focusing, so switch to video mode by swiping left on the screen.
3) In video mode tap on the subject you are shooting to focus on it. ( May need to be tapped more than once, Zooming in with two swipe finger gesture helps to get perfect focus)
4) After you are happy with the focus switch to photo mode by swiping right, this will maintain the focus that was set in video mode, if not repeat step 3.
5) Do NOT press shutter yet. Lock AE/AF before taking shot by long pressing on the finger to form a circle on the screen. (VERY IMPORTANT, else there will be FC)
6) After you have long pressed, take the photo. A circle will be shown which takes 30 shots in one second.
7) Shutter will be grayed out until the photo is processed which happens in the background, you can check progress by taping the thumbnail.
8) You can take as many shots you like with the present focus lock, also repeat the from step 3 for changing focus.
That's it
Thanks to @defcomg for the port and @dhk.-(DhKDc) for the magisk module

You need a 4pda account to download from their forums, the 404 error only happens when you are not logged in.
I can't get to register on 4pda, any russian fellow around?

I created a 4dpa account by using this guide to solve the captcha and I managed to install the apk. I found out it wasn't working as well as defcomk's port cause it couldn't auto-focus lock the image. The only new thing I saw was it supported raw image capture
If any of you, for some reason want to create an account and try it for yourself, follow this guide to solve the captcha: https://doorsgeek.blogspot.com/2015/08/4pdaru-loginregister-captcha-tutorial.html

WOW!! I thought the Google camera HDR+ was all hype. I had HDR+ on my Nexus 5 but apparently that was the old version not using the new API. I thought that took pretty good pictures but this new one on this phone is incredible. Every single thing I tried, every camera mod I could find, on any ROM other than stock, every picture looked over softened and blurry, or super grainy and still kind of blurry. Now it looks better than stock, impressively so. The color balance, focus, and sharpness is top notch. Amazing what a change in software can do to a piece of hardware.
A quick tip for people, the camera opens up with the focus set at infinite so if you take a picture of something 5ft+ away, there's no need to swipe to the video to focus. Just open the camera, long press to hold focus, and snap the picture. The camera also works in 16:9 if that's your thing.
Edit: open camera is finicky for videos, giving me reboots. Use Footej camera for quick non HD photos and videos.
Edit2: After messing around with it a bit more, it's not the just HDR+ that makes the pictures so much better, it's the new camera API. Install and use it with any camera app supporting camera2 API and the photos are much better all around.
Thanks a ton for posting this, both you, and OP.

Proper Working Gcam is Here:

Hello there.
I've been using Gcam from past a year on my phone.
Till today, @the_dise, @Arnova8G2 and @Parrot043's Gcams have been working tremendously awesome on Nokia 6.1 Plus.
When checked, parrot's gcam have more features on comparing with the other 2. And at the same time, some of you might get annoyed after capturing images, because, parrot's gcam create some Halos and ambiance no matter how much you change the settings.
One thing that is common in all the Gcams is that: SlowMo!
It works!
7FPS!

Parrot: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1066/
(Halos:/)
Arnova: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1072/
(Manual focus doesn't work. It focuses on its own)
Dise: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1062/
(His Gcams are near to stock!)
Hi
I have 2 questions
1. Is your device's bootloader is unlocked and you have custom rom installed?
2. Is your phone updated to android 10?
Every gcam don't work on android 10 in this device (shutter button doesn't work & solid green pict)
Not working after few clicks
Hope it helps.
Cheers!?

Gcam used to work normally for me even before unlocking Bootloader. But yeah, some of the gcams mod urnyx, pitbull irritates sometimes.
So, gcams from the_dise, parrot043 and Arnova8G2 are working tremendously awesome.
I've been using gcam from the the_dise from past a year which I loved it. Ofcourse, I've even tried others as well

That problem exists. As the new update on Nokia 6.1 plus has changed the vendor after Android 10.
Turn off the battery optimization for the app on the settings for better performance. Remember that, the app might drain battery. Neglect it.
Usually, it stops clicking images untill you reboot the device.
Edit:
Gcam stops clicking images only if you preview images no sooner you capture the images. You need to wait till it completes processing(and that can be seen in the notification bar). If you preview the images after processing, there will be no issues.
How it helps, cheers!
Use this camera, everything is working.

You clicked the preview button no sooner you capture the image huh? It happens only if you do that.
You're supposed to wait till the image processing is done and it can be good on the notification bar. If you don't wish to wait for 5-6 seconds, then I'd recommend you to TURN OFF the HDR mode and then capture the images so that you might not need to wait.
Reboot your phone once, gcam starts working again now.
Hope it helps, cheers. ?

Have you turned off the battery optimisations? ?
In Nokia phones, it has to be turned off. I dunno much about your device tho!
But, it doesn't usually cause on my phone but yeah, when you capture too many photos at once, it stops capturing until rebooted. You've to wait for atleast 10 secs to capture next shot unless burstshoot

I'm using this (arnova version because it's night sight viewfinder is working) in my Nokia 6.1 Plus TA1083..
And yes battery optimization is disabled..
I've updated to the latest release of this version and still haven't faced that trouble yet.
And capturing frequent photos might be the problem.
I'll keep that in mind Thanks!!!

Hei there is MR update with new build, whether it is fixed the error?
Green tint is coming after clicking pics
I've tried so many gcam mods and none of them save pictures even after waiting sometime to finish processing.
Use Nikita version. Its working fine. Slow motion is also working
When I bought this phone it automatically updated to android 10 ,,
Heard Android 9 is great for Google camera,
So if I downgrade to android 9 will everything work as before?
