Screen turns on with new messages - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S6

Is there a way to stop the screen from coming on with new text messages? Sometimes when I get a message I just leave my phone in my pocket, but if the screen turns on then I'll start pressing stuff in my pocket...I've already disabled notifications on the lock screen and it still does it...
Any help? Or am I just gonna have to deal with it?

You can disable it, you need to be rooted though.
Go to /data/data/com.android.mms/shared_prefs/
once in that folder, open up com.android.mms_preferences.xml
scroll down and find
<boolean name="pref_key_backlight" value="true" />
change true to false.
save, and reboot.

Make sure your messaging app does not allow that. I froze the stock messaging app and I am too lazy to defrost it and check. But some messaging apps have the option to turn on/off screen when new a message arrives.

Damn...I guess imma have to download a different messaging app...I really don't wanna root this phone just yet, but this screen issue bothers the hell outta me...
What's the best messaging app right now that I can use in place of the stock one?

I like Textra because it has the option to delay sending for a user-selectable period. If you have ever accidentally texted the wrong person, you will appreciate the value in that
But everyone has their favorite messaging app. You just gotta find one that suits your needs best.

mms.apk

I was wondering if on a hero build you could remove the MMS.apk and just install something like Chompsms or Handcent, would you still be able to get messages without the original messaging app sitting in the background?

Yea you can do that just disable the notification on the original messaging app.

What do you mean? I'm talking about completely deleting the mms.apk from /data/app_s and just replacing with chomp, would that work?

What I was saying was you can just open up your original messaging app and go to settings and turn off your notification and just what other messaging app you want to use. That way when you get a new message it would just notify chompsms/handcent and not the original one. Then make chompsms/handcent your default. I would do it that way so you still got the original on there but use whichever one you want. You never know if you'll run into a problem and need the original one for a back up. I hope that makes sense, I know I was rambling.

I already do that on other hero builds and it works okay, but when I get a new text I open up cleanoid (or whatever other taskkiller I feel like using) it always shows the original messaging app as a running process and I would like to completely eliminate that so I can reduce as much memory usage as possible and receive all my messages
Ok gotcha. Well I don't have a definite answer and wouldn't want to give you a wrong one, but I would assume you could just remove. Don't know if it would give you any problems down the road. The worst thing that would happen would be to either push the mms.apk back or just reflash a rom.
From what I've been told hope this helps. If you delete the mms.apk your new one will work fine but you will loose the ability to send mms as your other messaging programs still use parts of the original to function properly. You could always try freezing the original mms program with titanium back up that way out of sight out of mind but if you should ever need it again you can just defrost it.

[Q] How to fix the Captivates text messaging system?

On my Captivate when I recieve a message it's never in order.
For example, I send a test text to a friend at 7:41. When he sends it back one minute later the text ends up behind mine (not in order) and the time recieved says 2:41am.
Is there something wrong that I'm missing? How can I fix this?

Wow. I tried the app mentioned in the topic and it totally ruined the order of my texts...
Yeah, that did not work at all. Messed things up even more.
Any other ideas?
Use Handcent, it's free, totally customizable and works.

don't use auto time/date update
if you use the stock messaging app, try using handcent or chomp and see if it still does it.

[Q] Go SMS Pro, help please?!

Coming over from HandCent (massive battery drain), and only one complaint.
With HandCent, it would unlock my screen even though I had a pattern lock enabled. But with Go SMS Pro, it just turns on the screen and makes the unlock noise, but it does not actually unlock the screen, but rather just show the pattern lock screen.
Help please?!?!

I will, I will. I'm on my phone right now.
Well it did a pop-up, showed the quick text box, and if you started to type, it would let you and then lock your phone back up after.
And if you didn't want to text back, it locked back up in 10 seconds (or whatever you set it to).
You can't exit out of the quick text box without the phone locking back up... really nice actually

I've recently switched to this app as well. must faster and lighter than handcent- but I'm having one issue.
I have it set to unlock the phone when a message comes in. If I receive a popup notification for a message and immediately take my phone out of my pocket, sometimes the screen orientation will change and this will dismiss the popup. the message disappears from my notification tray and everything. has anyone else experienced this?

Help! Widgetlocker and sms popup

So I've been spending the better part of an hour trying to convince widgetlocker to block sms popup but can't seem to figure out the proper system name. I have tried "SMS Popup", "android-smspopup", and "com.smspopup.*" any help would be greatly appreciated.

why not just uninstall SMS popup or tell SMS popup not to try and unlock screen?
It doesn't unlock the screen. It pops up in front of widget locker instead of waiting for me to unlock it like it does by default. I tried the whole trying to figure it out through installed apps thing too. Even tried finding it before the names changed in running apps list. Not happening.

I'm also trying to figure this out... I love the customization for individual contacts that SMS Popup offers, and I'm not ready to lose that.... so if anyone can figure it out... haha.

I have never once said it unlocks the screen. And it never unlocks the phone on any setting. It does turn the screen on by default but I turned that off long ago. the problem is when I turn the screen on sms popup sits on top of the lockscreen with widgetlocker. Widgetlocker has an option but you need the actually system name such as "com.handcent.nextsms" to handcent. I just need that one little line of text to fix this. Just don't know what it is for sms popup.

All you had to do to get that line was navigate to /data/app with root explorer and find SMS popup.
net.everythingandroid.smspopup-1.apk
Its a liveable issue. It doesn't wake the screen at least but I know there has to be a way to figure it out. Its probably not even that hard but I don't know enough about programming or how android works to do so. I've been on vacation since the issue started and getting on a plane home now. Hopefully ill be able to figure it out with a better workspace blah.
Edit: either you posted that while I was typing or im blind. I actually tried that my device just showed smspopup.apk I thank you very much sir.

App permission monitor stating the obvious on SMS?

Has anyone seen this App permission monitor pop up while doing something completely normal and keep letting you know every time you use it? For me, I'm using Google Messages as my default SMS app, and this thing pops up telling me "1 apps have been detected using 1 permissions" and lists Messages | SMS.
OBVIOUSLY.
What's even stranger is that I went to app permissions and it says that Messages is authorized for SMS, just like I okay'd it when Messages was set as the default SMS app. What gives? I think this might come in handy when an app goes rogue, using permissions without me saying it was okay to do so, but in this case, it's like saying "water is wet." When you click on the notification, it says that Messages has been using permissions in the background.... What?
Any thoughts on how to okay this with App permission monitor so I can text without this warning all the time (and no, I'm not about to hide notifications of it since it could be helpful in the future).
Go into Settings > Lock Screen and Security > App Permissions Monitor and turn it off.

Not helpful. Please read what I wrote again. I think the app could possibly be useful, but it just needs to be corrected.
You can actually go in and tell it to not report permission uses for specific apps instead of turning it off completely. Instead of clicking the rifle just click on the words so permission monitor and it'll give the full list of apps and you can shut off reporting for apps you trust.

THANK YOU. This is what I was looking for. I didn't know what you were referring to at first, I was just getting the notification because I didn't see it in Settings (there is so much stuff in there now, you just about have to use the search feature for everything these days!), but now that I found it, I clicked on the words, not the toggle switch, and set Messages to NOT monitor. Perfect, thank you.
I am kind of confused. What did you search to make it go away? This is getting so annoying because it is always telling me textra is using SMS and I am not sure what to do to make it stop. Like you I would still like to keep the monitor on I just wish it would stop telling me what I already know.

I was a little confused as well so this is what I did to correct it.
SETTINGS >> LOCK SCREEN AND SECURITY >> APP PERMISSION MONITOR
From there you should go down to the android Messages app and toggle it to off. That will disable giving the warning every time you send a message.
Hope that helps.

You do know they legit just told you how to do it.... you dont have to be mean about it. and then stating "THIS" is what im looking for. Like they told you how to get there, you click the name. if you went onto there to just hit the toggle without looking/investigating around, ie. pressing the section instead, then you arent probably getting the most out of your phones.
I suggest playing around in your settings and everything to get the most out of your phone.
I legit just made this account to tell you this because the person helped you and you seemed to speak rude to them.

I am assuming you are using a 3rd party messaging app from the play store?
I am still getting the notifications even though for instance Contacts is allowed to be used by Android Messages, I get the notification everytime I send or receive a text.
I tried turning the monitor off completely, still getting notifications.
All since I upgraded to a new Samsung patch last night on my S8+.
In fact I got the notification just now after I toggled the setting to off...I checked and the toggle is back on.

Can Not Thank You Enough! I could not figure out how to get that to stop to save me and my OCD couldn't take anymore of those notifications as it was always about my chosen text app. Turning off all didn't work why I didn't think to try just the one is beyond me. So thanks again and this is why I love this Forum!
