App that toggles GPS automatically - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I recently decided to root my droid turbo since it seems like we are never going to get the lollipop update ?. Im already seeing improvements in battery life and performance by using various apps like clean master and battery doctor.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any apps that would know when I'm using a certain app and toggle certain setting when I am and off when I'm not. For example, if I pull up the maps app, I obviously need location on so as soon as I open it, it turns location on, and then when I'm done with the all, turns it back off.
Ive seen the "tasker" app on the Google play store that's like 2.99 and I didn't know if it would do that or not.
Thanks in advance!!

IIRC, Tasker does this. I think Llama (similar to Tasker) can also do it.

Yes, Tasker does this with the addition of Secure Settings. You can set it so that whenever you open apps X, Y, Z, it will automatically toggle GPS.
I have this set up for Maps, Yelp, etc. When I exit the app, GPS is turned off after a 2 minute delay (it kept disabling GPS if I quickly switched to another app during navigation, so I set a longer delay than most tutorials suggested)

Thanks, I decided to buy tasker right after I posted that. Was gonna wait till I knew for sure that it would work but decided I wanted to try it anyway. Took me a little bit to figure it out but finally did.
I'm trying to figure out now how to use the scenes to make a pop up menu that will be there during navigation to allow me to start playing music and different navigation tasks so I can stay on the navigation app. I'm having a lot of trouble with it.

Open issues to be solved

Just thought it was a good idea to open a thread with "issues" to be solved or things we want to get working on the Gear. I myself have a thing of two that I want to solve. For this I searched through some threads, saw some people mention the problems but never found a solution (although apparently other people were working on it to).
Because I like to be part of the solution but don't want to reinvent the wheel I thought it is maybe a good idea to sum some things up that need a solution in one thread.
Basic thing that I'm looking for and not sure if it is solved is
enable/disable BT tethering with just one tap (so to speak). Ideally automagically when opening an app that needs an internet connection
(If the problem isn't solved I was thinking to write an app for this)
(Reserved : list with open issues )
Id love someone to be able to rewrite the newest gear manager to work with people not on 4.3.
Or someone to get the things not working on 4.2 like weAther etc.
A native sms app that syncs with the phone properly. or get tablet talk to display names.

Very easy with Tasker & Bluetooth Auto Connect.
Iv set up so if my device is locked & the screen is off for 30 seconds, it will disable bluetooth tethering for battery reasons. Iv also setup so if I slide two fingers up on my Novalauncher homescreen it will enable bluetooth tethering. Alternatively you can also enable a launcher shortcut which will execute the task.
You can also setup so bluetooth tethering will automatically be activated when launching certain applications.
If you need further instructions, dont hesitate. Tasker can be a little intimidating at first if this is your first time using it.
I'd quite like to be able to swipe away notifications, both individually and per app. Currently it's a bit of a hassle..!

I've never used tasker before. Maybe worthwhile to dive into it.
Also played with Bluetooth Auto Connect. I used it to maintain a connection. (But concluded very quickly that that will drain the battery of the Gear like hell LoL). Where do you use Bluetooth Auto Connect for in this scenario? I mean,if I understand you correctly everything can be done with Tasker.

Bluetooth auto connect works as a plugin for tasker also, so you can incorporate bluetooth auto connect functions in your tasks.
You must get tasker, its a device changer.. both phone & gear.

fOmey do i only need tasker on the phone in order to do that? The way i am manually doing it is i first enable tether on the phone ands then dive into the full settings on the Gear.
If the phone stops tethering then the Gear option automatically gets unticked, but it does not work the other way around.
I have tasked installed on both phone and gear. Could you please provide some instructions?
Also, have you checked Atooma? I have it both on the S4 and the Gear and i can do stuff on the phone with three triggers from the watch:
1) Horizontal movement
2) Vertical movement
3) Photo taken
Does tasker integrate with the watch the way Atooma does?
Thanx again for everything you have done.
YOU ARE THE MAN!
I'd like to be able to scroll down and see a playlist and pick a song

[TASKER] Looking for some tasker profile ideas. Post your tasker profiles here!

So I just discovered the magical world of tasker, and am loving it! Totally worth the money, and one of the best apps to have (the best if you know how to maximise its use)! I have been experimenting a bit with it, so I don't have many profiles. I'm sure many folks here will be using tasker and would be having some great profiles, so I'm looking forward to hearing some suggestions! The profiles I use are:
1. WiFi off at night, from 00:45 to 08:00, except WhatsApp, Play Store, Quora
2. Airplane mode at night, from 00:30 to 07:00
3. Use of interactive CPU governor when using Real Racing 3, and revert to lionfish governor after exiting app(Kernel adiutor profiles do this for me). I also added a condition to use auto-rotate when playing the game, and revert to portrait orientation after closing the app.
4. Auto-sync every two hours, from 08:00 to 20:00 (I would like to improve this to auto-sync only Gmail, would welcome suggestions on how to do this from any tasker experts out here )
I would love to implement more profiles and automate my phone, so looking for ideas.
Need a tasker profile which can disable my mobile data only for some specific apps.it means If I start those apps then my mobile data would automatically disabled and when I close them Data service should be enbled. If u can help on this then That wud be very helpfull
Nothing very fancy for me - right now just have it turning on my wifi hotspot when it detects my car's bluetooth connection so my stereo can use the internet.
It sounds like you are taking it pretty far, @varunadi. You should check out https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker for more cool ideas.

I don't know if you can disable mobile data entirely (not just background which Android can do already) for just certain apps.
Perhaps it would be easier to use something like Netguard.
I've never used it but the description says "Applications can individually be allowed or denied access to your Wi-Fi and/or mobile connection."

I was actually going to suggest that as I have it installed already but when I tried it didn't work.
The "Mobile data" toggle was unavailable because it claims I don't have root. However, I'm definitely rooted and there's no listing (saying denied or otherwise) in SuperSU for Secure Settings so it didn't even ask for root. I'm not too surprised as SS hasn't been updated in over a year and a lot of the Play Store comments mention mobile data toggle specifically not working either (among other things). Too bad as it was pretty powerful and of course I think I paid for it right after its last update.
Not getting SS working for me might just be my problem and perhaps someone else can get it going.
I was also going to suggest [APP][2.2+][ROOT] Toggle Data 5.0 (xda-exclusive free version) but then I read more about what @anks095 said which was "can disable my mobile data only for some specific apps" so I'm guessing he just wants certain apps restricted and not all (although the next sentence seems to say otherwise but I might be reading it incorrectly). I'm not too sure that can be done via Tasker/SS - my guess is that it's an "all-or-nothing" kinda thing for mobile data so the VPN thing might be the only way.
I use a similiar app called automagic but some of the things that I got my tasker like program to do are: lockscreen enable/disable through wi-fi at trusted places (don't like geofencing due to battery), when connected to the bluetooth of my car. Auto silent 5 min before a meeting, but if not connected to my smartwatch then vibrate. And lastly sms emergency location request where my family can send a keyword and my phone will automatically send location.

How is the lockscreen one working for you? I find the built-in SmartLock to be really unreliable but when I tried to do lockscreen stuff before (last year) there was some bug in either Tasker or Secure Settings that would sometimes keep your screen black with just the nav buttons visible present. I'll have to re-try now.
That sms emergency request thing sounds cool! Can the recipient open the location in Maps to see exactly where you are?
Without issues I set it so that it clears the password. Makes it so that I have to swipe to unlock. As for the location, yes it sends coordinates and the user in the other end taps it to bring up Google maps.

Thank you very much - clearing the password was the key! I had been trying before to disable the keyguard entirely so I wouldn't even have to swipe but that's where the problem/bug came in. Thinking about it that makes more sense to have at least a swipe because I'd end up calling people from my pocket by mistake. So thanks again!
Tasker...hmmm. Bought it, but much to complicated for me. Macrodroid is much easier to understand and can also do complicated automation with a normal user friendly interface. I tried to like Tasker, but the more and more I tried the more stupid I felt.

Tasker or another automate app working?

Hi,
I tried to find root cause, but unfortunately without success. Is there anybody, who using Tasker or another application for automatization of your phone without any issues?
My issue is, Tasker is still "delayed" - but same rules I used before on LG G3 (Android 6.0) - but now on P9 (DualSIM) didn't work.
I have task for Calendar Entry, where if I have appointment in my work calendar, during this time Sound mode is deactivated (only Vibrate).
Some suggestion? I tried white lists, etc. or another app with same bad behavior.
Thank you!
Well, I tried to deactivate power management app from Huawei over ADB and looks good now finally! Its workaround, but tasker now working very well as expected.
adb shell pm hide com.huawei.powergenie
Did you have "Run in Foreground" selected in Tasker's preferences?
My Tasker works fine with that selected, although I also have trusted the app in permissions manager, allowed it to auto launch & activated it as a device administrator in advanced settings/security.
Yeah, I tried every tip over Tasker or phone (EMUI settings) and only deactivate power management helps me.
I had the same problem with IFTTT. It worked perfectly with my LG G3, but was hopeless on the P9. No amount of white-listing or settings would work.
I even had the app in memory, with Google maps running, on GPS, screen on, and it still wouldn't trigger a location based profile.
I've had to revert to manually arming and dis-arming my home security system. Annoying.
I translate from spanish so I'm sorry if your phone shows menus with other name.
You must go to adjust > advanced adjusts > memory and store and at bottom of page "space clean". On new screen push on upper-right wheel, and now on last option "white list of memory clean". Finally look for your app and activate it.
If you don't include app here, clean system will close it on background and timers won't work. It solved my problems.

Why would you need Tasker for that simple.
Settings, type in the Search Autostart and add your app to the list of apps to be started on every reboot.
You may also need to disable Battery Optimization for your app (to make sure it would still work in background when the phone sleeps with dark screen)
That should generally work for all Androids. I don't have Huawei P9 now for years, I remember that EMUI might have had specific Settings organization but there was also Autostart (or Auto start)...

I had P9 for three years (if you don't believe, you can find tons of my posts here back from 2017-2018)
Now, you have that phone, not me (I got rid of my last Huawei almost three years ago) - I cannot show you and I cannot look into the EMUI settings because I don't have the EMUI phone anymore
But I KNOW that there was a way in EMUI how to control which apps will be automatically started on boot - I know because I played with all that back in those years, II did need for many apps like AdAway, Find My Device and similar that required to be auto-started to operate correctly
Take your time and google and you'll find. Sorry, I tried to help you but I will no more waste my time on that. Huaweis are past time for me
And take your time, use your imagination, If not Autostart, google for EMUI startup manager or something similar to find the answer for your question on the Net

Issue with Tasker not performing correctly when using Google maps.

On my S7 edge, I have Tasker setup usibg Auto Notification to have menus pop up while navigating to allow easy switch between music and navigation screens. For some reason, this causes Tasker to not monitor switching between apps properly, and some plugins like autoshare and even auto notification don't work properly. Tasker basically doesn't work right for several minutes and then it finally catches up and everything starts happening at once. I could really use help with this, it's annoying when Tasker does things 30 minutes after it was supposed to happen at the wrong times.
Is "use reliable alarms" set to always?

My heaviest Tasker use is in my car mode....always navigating with Google Maps. I have a ton of profiles which monitor both apps and notifications to make many decisions...with some extremely complex tasks attached.
Everything usually works fine. But sometimes I make a bad task that loops indefinitely, or I have a root or accessibility problem, or for some reason an error occurs in my programming....those kinds issues usually cause major lag or profiles don't fire at all.
I would think that Tasker itself is probably performing as expected and there is an error (or a method that could be better) in your profiles. My advice is to save a run log and review line by line.

Reliable alarms was set to never. Could that have been my issue? I know for a fact it's Tasker that's the problem cause when I go into Tasker after being on the home screen it still thinks I'm in the maps app. Or the music app. I've reviewed all my tasks very carefully.

Didn't end up changing much, at least not yet. See I have a profile for Google maps, Google Music, and home screen so that whenever one of these becomes active, I get a flash popup telling me what app is open. Whenever I start navigation it's like Tasker stops monitoring which app is open. Autoshare stops working too. Whenever I go to use an autoshare action, I get an error. But then that action ends happening later on, even after it gives out an error. I'm not sure what to do.
Maybe you're experiencing a reported conflict with google play services as described in this thread

Not sure. It only seems to happen when Google maps is running but even when I do big tasks E.G moving big files using ES File explorer, still seems to cause tasker to struggle. So I'm not sure what to think but I wish it would work properly.

Can't keep apps running in the background

I know this is the Mi 8 forum, but I feel that the issue I have on my Mi 9 will be common across both phones, and thought I would post here too.
I've noticed that at least two apps will mysteriously stop working in the background, causing problems:
First, most important, I use my Google Voice number, not my SIM number, so I need Google Voice to be running so that it intercepts my calls and uses the right phone number to make calls. If I open Google Voice, it will work for a few hours, maybe a day, and then GV stops working and calls start going out through my SIM number.
The other app that exhibits this behavior is Garmin Connect -- my watch gives me notifications, but then, for no reason, it will stop working. Opening Garmin Connect solves the problem.
I have ensured all permissions are set as liberally as possible, even the "allow autostart" option. Not sure what else to do. Any ideas would be great. I actually didn't have the issue with my Mi 8, but I wonder if anyone has any knowledge on how this could happen on the Mi 9.
Thanks!

MIUI itself is a bit heavy on RAM, for one, and it's always been a bit aggressive on RAM management. Another thing, have you disabled MIUI's power saving functionality for those apps? I believe it only affects background push data, but I may be wrong. To configure said apps, go to Settings > Battery & performance > Choose apps and then select the apps in question and set to No Restrictions. There used to be an option to completely disable it, but that has since been removed. Another thing is to enable Developer options by tapping the MIUI version several times in the About phone section of the Settings app, then go to Additional settings > Developer options and disable MIUI optimizations. Read the prompt that pops up as I recall it mentioning something about affecting certain services.

I have set the apps in question to No Restrictions, a long time ago, but that didn't help. Today, I tried another option -- Use Adaptive Battery (Limit battery for apps that you don't use often). I turned that OFF, and it appears I've been getting alerts on my Garmin watch all day. However, I made a call and Google Voice wasn't active. I was getting excited that I'd found a cure until that happened. I'll try your suggestion in developer options and report back if it works. Thanks for that idea.
No luck -- Google Voice is still stopping, even after just a few minutes. I can't make calls on my google voice number unless I first launch Voice, then go to the phone app.

Yeah MIUI 10 + Android 9.0 are worse than previous versions of MIUI, but Google apps have issues on all devices that do not use stock or near stock Android. Have you attempted to lock the app in the task manager? Open your app, for example Google Voice, then using the task manager (App switcher), long press that app and tap the lock button. Try using the phone as you normally would and see if it helps.
@Crossvxm that's a good idea. I'll try and let you know how it goes.

All you have to to do is turn off Battery restrictions.
Also, I would suggest giving the launcher "Smart Launcher: a try. Not only is it awesome but it gives you quick access to all of the permissions, and battery optimizations. You can manage all of this from the Apps list.. Press and hold on any icon and click namage ( or the gear then manage) this is much easier then searching through the system settings for autostart, permissions, battery management etc. This is one app that is worth buying. The free version is great, but the paid version is incomparable, and I own all of the popular launchers. Smart Launcher Pro 5 is absolutely the best, and highly customizable.
My biggest issue with all AOSP roms is that the battery goes up to 105F when charging on every single AOSP rom that I have tried on the Mi8. While there is no immediate risk in the long term the battery should not get hotter than room temperature.
Back to Miui, turn off battery restrictions and you will have no issues, you also have the option of clicking the pin in recents to keep the app active.
Hi @tsongming, I've done everything possible to deactivate restrictions. I've done it the way you mentioned and other ways as well. I did try locking the app as mentioned by @Crossvxm and it might have done the trick -- will know more in a few days. I use Nova Launcher (paid version) and it has the same features you mentioned about Smart Launcher, where I can get to the settings instantly.

I run MIUI stock 10.3.3.0 with Sphinx Kernel and root. I also use Hangouts, Google voice, and Google message without issues. It's like tsongming mentioned. Turn off the adaptive battery and remove battery restrictions on each app. Also make sure they get all permissions.
Something to note , when I used Canting Kernel, I had lots of apps turn off in background including my Fossil sport watch connection. Going back to Sphinx Kernel took care of issue, probable too aggressive memory killer in Canting. Stock Kernel might have same issue idk.
./
When I had my Mi 8, I had no issues. This seems to be something new with the 9. I've disabled adaptive battery, I've provided all permissions to the app, I've removed all power restrictions. I'm not rooted, so I can't change kernel right now. It appears that locking the app might have helped a bit, but I wish I didn't have to do it.
