Help with custom Rom HTC D: - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im having a issue with my M7. Well I installed CM 12.1 and I its buggy atm so I did a factory reset trying to delete the rom like normal and install NuSenSeven rom, Well with further notice I see that Aroma Installer ( used for NuSenSeven) Doesnt install properly though it says success but doesnt install everything? And when I reboot phone it boots back into the old rom... But I never had the issue with the rom im trying to download now until I installed CM12.....And the factory reset makes it to where CM12 boots up lke its brand new installed? Deletes all my apps, makes me do setup, then does starting apps... just not NuSenSeven D:

factory reset only wipes user data, not the /system partition. Flash the rom using the recommend recovery in the rom OP (TWRP 2.8.6.0 should work fine). If needed format data using twrp, reboot the recovery, push the rom to your memory and flash it again.

The system partition is formated by the rom installer when you install a new rom. You don't need to delete your current rom before flashing a new one. Factory reset just erases the user data partition. Effectively leaving you with a clean installed rom.
You can manually format the system partition using advanced wipe options in most custom recoveries. Or you can use Format Data in TWRP. Warning format data will wipe the entire device including your sd card storage. you will need to copy a new rom zip to the device to install it after using format data.

boot in twrp, select "wipe" menu then hit the "format data" button, type "yes" to confirm, wait for data to be formatted and important, reboot the recovery before attempting to push and flash a rom.
yes it will get rid of all your files so backup first if needed.

if you have latest twrp like you pm'ed me, then just boot in twrp main menu and open "my computer --> Htc One --> internal storage" and copy your rom there.
Or you can use adb push it
Code:
adb push name_of_rom.zip /sdcard
phone must be booted in twrp main menu. The command window will be unresponsive for a while (5-10 min) just wait for it to say complete before doing anything else.

Your screen shot was unclear, it's difficult to see what's happening there, although it's clear to see not much is happening.
Did it get stuck at Formatting partitions. ?
Try flashing the rom with a different version of TWRP. 2.6.3.3 Is normally my goto version if I have an issue with anything like this. If the rom is on your storage you won't need to copy it on again. Just flash the new recovery and install the rom again. :good:

What Rom are you trying to flash? a link would be very helpful if possible.
Have you checked the md5 of the Rom zip?
Have you tried a different version of twrp? If so does it give the same result?

Check the md5 of the downloaded Rom. You can do this with this tool. www.winmd5.com
NuSenSeven by Santod has this md5
Code:
7d1c68380ded9fbe8da193d702eae373
check your zip with the tool it should produce the same md5 value. If it doesn't the zip is corrupt, you need to re-download it.
If the md5 checks out we can look at maybe some partition problems, but I think you formatted the device. With the Format Data option in twrp, is that right? This should have solved any corrupt partitions but maybe worth looking into.

3 most common causes of roms not flashing correctly:
Wrong recovery used --> 2.6.3.3 was the most stable for 4.4.2 roms and below, twrp 2.8.5.0+ should work fine for 5.0+ roms, Cyanogenmod rom requires at least twrp 2.7.1.2.
Corrupted partition --> need to format data
Corrupted rom --> check md5, re-download rom as required.
You can only use "drag n drop" (mtp) if using twrp 2.8+ otherwise use adb push or sideload
You could also use usb drive with the rom on it + a usb otg adapter, mount it in twrp and flash the rom from the drive.
You should check the FAQ sticky thread, I think nkk71's posted some good tips at page 2 irc.

Please help unbrick a Telus HTC One

Hi everyone.
I unlocked the bootloader and rooted a Telus HTC One. But the latest flash went wrong and I went into bootloop. Somehow, I seem to have gotten myself into a situation where there's no ROM installed. I can still get into Bootloader and Recovery. When I try to start the phone, it's stuck at "HTC Quietly Brilliant" screen.
I've tried factory resetting, wiping everything, relocking the bootloader and loading the Factory RUU Zip using the All-In-One tool kit by Hasoon, and sideloading a ROM. Nothing seems to work. I also managed to push a ROM to the phone using the adb push command. When I try to install it using TWRP, I get an error msg "Unable to open zip file." It failed using CWM recovery as well.
When I plug the phone into a computer, it recognizes something is plugged in. But I can't open the drive at all. I get error msgs when I try to mount sdcard, system, data, anything. Things don't seem to be mounting/recognized at all. HTC sync and drivers are installed.
Experts, what else can I try?
Try downloading a Telus clean nandroid backup. Then go back into recovery (depends of what nandroid you get, make sure you have the right recovery, so if you download a CWM nandroid use CWM).

Thanks for the suggestion. Not having any luck finding a Telus nandroid. Would it make matters worse if I try to restore from a non-Telus nandroid? My phone can't mount the /sdcard right now. Suppose I'll have to adb push it to the phone again?

You don't mount the sdcard in HTC One you mount the data partition.
Also what happens if you sideload a ROM?
PHP:
adb sideload <ROM>
Have you tried erasing cache after installing a ROM if successful?

When I sideloaded, It said
Can't Open /sdcard/rom.zip" (bad).
Installation aborted
Sideloading now gives me this error
failed to open driver control: No such file or directory

hmm, okay. I thought since recovery says "Install zip from sdcard" i thought /sdcard needed to be mounted. /data is mounted at the moment. No connectivity between computer and the phone unless through the All-in-one kit.

And I haven't had successfully installed a ROM since I bricked the phone.
Install a custom ROM and kernel on your USB from the computer, mount the USB in Twrp using the otg cable. Flash ROM, if it doesnt boot, flash the kernel.
Flashing the kernel fixed it for me.
Another way is to use an adb pusher app and transfer thevfiles to your SD card.

HTC One Soft bricked many problems leading to more problems!

Ok So I have an HTC One m7. and I had CyanogenMod installed. Then jsut today I decided I would go back to Sense 6. So I download Android Revolution HD 71.1 for m7 install it on my phoen. Then CWM(Which I hate btw and can't uninstall no matter what I do) says your phone is not rooted would you like to root it when I click reboot phone. No matter which I click I get stuck on the HTC logo boot logo. I don't care if I lose my data or anything so I click factory reset, then wipe cache, then wipe dalvik cache. Then I get the error were it constantly says cant mount /cache or whatever. So to fix it i wipe Dalvik Cache again. Then I try sideloading ViperOne Rom. Guess what It give me *failed to write 'protocol fault <no status> *
Then I tried formatting my data with CWM which took 2 hours and still didn't complete so I rebooted(which led to more problems) Now I cant say install from sdcard because it gives me the error E: Can't Mount /sdcard. So that means I cant adb push Viper /sdcard. I have no Idea what to do. Help me please!

its simple to fix, your problem is simply cwm recovery, you need to use twrp to flash either of those rom's, so start there, recommended is 2.6.3.3, its the most problem free.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_name.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then enter recovery, select wipe then format data, push or sideload a rom then flash it.
ViperOne Install Instructions
1. Download the the latest ViperOne full ROM zip from the download section
2. Place the file somewhere on your phone storage. Alternatively, if you have a USB OTG cable (I have this exact one), you can place the rom on a USB key (FAT32, NTFS are all supported).
3. Confirm the MD5 on the download page matches the MD5 of the file on your phone (ES File Explorer will show the MD5 of the file)
4. Reboot to TWRP Recovery
5. Backup current ROM if desired
6. Install ROM using TWRP and select wipe during aroma install if coming from another base
7. Reboot and Enjoy

did you format data first ? any unable to mount messages, you could also try advanced wip and select everything in the list.
try pushing it instead
with the phone in twrp main screen only, no sub menu's and the rom in the same folder as adb and fastboot on your computer type:
Code:
adb push (name_of_rom).zip /sdcard/
takes a while and will look unresponsive, but the cmd window will let you know when its done. Make sure you unplug your phone before flashing.

I recommend you start from scratch
from the bootloader / power down
wait a couple min and boot back to fastboot
plug the phone into the PC
from your command prompt type
fastboot devices
see your device serial number
type
fastboot erase cache
type
fastboot reboot-bootloader
now try sideload your rom from TWRP 2.6.3.3 /advanced/sideload

So you have CWM / TWRP installed? Try copying a ROM to the external SD card, and install it that way. Clear everything in recovery first, cache, dalvik, etc... I had the same problem with the M8 and it drove me nuts until I did it all from the SD. If not, I would suggest trying the full RUU, it has saved me many a time.

Oh that's right dang it. When I had my M7 I converted it to a Dev Edition by changing the CID and then using a file like this:
http://dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/m7ul-3.4.10-g77e9ea0.zip
Mine was an ATT version so MID matched.

Hey, hey, hey, patience my friend, we are here to help, ALL of us, we are trying.
Scratch that link, it doesn't like direct posts, find the Brighstar WWE RUU by searching at: http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads, or find the ATT, or TMobile. Not sure what your carrier is, but the Dev Edition is the way to go.

ok im doing it right now. Im AT&T btw.
I seem to have fixed the E: Can't mount cache problem. All i did was go to advance and click only on cache. Now all I need is to sideload or pus my ViperOne rom over to my HTC. Then hopefully nothing goes wrong. What do I do once the zip file is done downloading?
That might not be the right one, it should be an exe around 1 GB in size, sorry. Look around for it, if it's not still posted at the HTC Dev site, then it is around here somewhere. There are also some nandroids I have seen that should help you restore to stock. Nonetheless, once you have that Viper Rom on there, you should be able to flash anything you want. A full RUU will restore your phone to the state in which you bought it in, just like brand new.

Error while Flashing NostromoPop 2.2.2

Hi,
i tried to flash the latest NostromoPop 2.2.2 ROM whith twrp 2.8.5.0, but unfortunately i get the following error message:
Can't install this package on top of incompatible data. Please try another package or run a factory reset
E:error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/2015-12-31 rom.zip'
I already did a factory reset from the bootloader, but it doesn't change anything.
The mini 2 is unlocked, HBOOT 3.19.0.0000 and the following original ROM is running: Build 2.19.206.4, it is an o2 Germany branded one.
thanks a lot.

UPDATE> i tried to install it from sd external, but (what a surprise) it does not work. i will try to push it via adb to the device. But another question. Do i have to wipe anything else than dalvik and cache?
Thank you

i only installed it about 2 days ago perfectly so it isnt anything wrong with the ROM itself. It may be a bad download? Try to re-download it. Also try wiping cache, data and system? (Wont wipe the storage)

Thank you, DarkExistence . I don't think it is a bad download because I already tried it with the rom dated 25th of dec and 31st of dec. Also I checked the md5 sum after the transfer onto the smartphone. In which folder did you place the .zip File?
I am a little bit careful in wiping to much partitions, because if the installation fails after wiping the data Partition i'll have a problem.

Lended Phone to Friend; He Decided to "Encrypt his phone for "Google for Work"".

Lended Phone to Friend; He Decided to "Encrypt his phone for "Google for Work"".
He Decided he wanted to encrypt the phone so he could use Google for work.
Huge Mistake letting him do that, he ended up bricking the thing and now I've got a major issue.
I Cant write, mount, or read the /system Partition in TWRP no matter WHAT I do.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I Can get onto the system where it says "Enter your pattern to decrypt" He puts the correct one in and then it tells him "Decrypt unsuccessful"
When I try to wipe /system in wipe mode, it says Error: Cannot mount /system repeatedly.
Please put your input on the matter Thanks
(I still have 1 L90 that works, but both have Download mode wiped because I accidentally deleted it while unlocking boot loader to discover its already unlocked.
(Will post pictures later)
Bro, go to recovery, plug your device on USB, then from win open adb and type separate one by one in command prompt:
adb shell
recovery –wipe_data –set_filesystem_encryption=off
Nada

Also, Recovery Wont load anymore and now is "Blinking" Teamwin over and over. GG
And your system won't boot up? Nonsense, you did not wipe recovery with this command to make clear.

Just to be clear, I'm was on Cyandogen Mod and he decided to Encrypt and I cant get past there.
And Recovery cant mount /system.
When you prompted to enter pasword to decrypt you enter: default_password?
Now, I cant mount /data

Lets Recap, I ran your command and Now I can mount /system Great!
but Now I cant mount /data.
What would I do to fix that?
Also, How do you update TWRP from Recovery? (I'm an idiot lol)

If you can go into recovery, simple factory reset, your data must be wiped and clean install ROM, gapps, etc...
Have option to flash ZIP or IMAGE from recovery, select flash image, then flash TWRP.
You turn off encryption with my command: recovery –wipe_data –set_filesystem_encryption=off?
Tell other user for that, this will be useful.
Regards

Yes, I Issued your command and Now I cannot mount /data in TWRP and therefore cannot wipe it.
I will attempt to update TWRP, but as I said, without /data access I cannot do anything on any rom I install.
You do not mount data to flash, please unmount all partition, then wipe system, data, dalvik ART, cache and optionally internal card.
Ok This is going to be a mouthful, but this is how i fixed it.
I Tried many methods, but the one that worked was this:
So, You know how the D415's boot loader is unlocked by default?
What I did was Boot into TWRP, And used ADB through it
Then Through ADB, Pushed the IAF.img of the original download mode, ( I Wiped it accidentally, thinking I had to.) and then wrote the IAF to the Download mode to restore the Download Modes Official Function, To restore the phone to factory.
Then I Just used the LG Software Update Tool to re-flash to stock, and then uh oh, the encryption screen again.
This is the stupid part, So Apparently LG Stock Recovery was able to remove the encryption through a wipe and like magic took me to the setup screen. (No Encryption password request).
Then I Proceeded to root using LG root-script and used TWRP Manager to reinstall TWRP 3.0.2.0 Bam!
Then as a test (I Didn't want to bother downloading CM13) Flashed it with Orion OS and Mini Gapps.
And like Magic, it was all new again.
Lots of threads were used to figure this out especially the re-writing of the IAF image (I had no idea how to write it to the original IAF partition.
Thanks who ever decided to post about how to reinstall the original IAF file.
So, If your (Insert relation here) decides to encrypt your phone and then proceeds to unencrypt it and then brick it, your not in trouble after all!

ADB push not working/TWRP

I accidentally flashed the Universal SafetyNet Fix 1.1.0 via TWRP and had to start from scratch (flash MIUI via MIUI flash tool)
I installed TWRP and now want to copy files to the phone. I hence copy the file (gapps.zip) into the adb folder and run
adb push gapps.zip /sdcard
However, I end up with an error:
adb: error: failed to copy 'gapps.zip' to '/sdcard/gapps.zip': remote couldn't create file: No such file or directory
gapps.zip: 0 files pushed.
The device itself is detect:
adb devices
xxxxxxx recovery
I would highly appreciate some help here, this has been driving me nuts.
Update: Not sure if I properly flashed TWRP. I cannot boot into recovery, even though
fastboot flash recovery C:\Users\user\Downloads\mi\twrp.img
successfully runs
WTF is wrong with flashing TWRP?

Just drag and drop it in file manager/explorer/etc (whatever is on the OS you're using)
TWRP acts as an MTP device, so you can see the internal storage of the phone when it's booted to TWRP and connected to a PC. Why make life complicated using adb commands when it's easier to drag and drop.

bro, this is the condition of internal storage, both in pc and twrp, and it also saying this: "unmodified system partition" "keep system read only?" then it is written: swipe to allow modification. I swiped but no modification I think took place, Misgk.zip is not showing, ADB push not working, and you can see in ss the condition of internal storage in pc.
I read about date encryption, saw 1 youtube video (not available any), they all say that internal storage showing 0 mb. but my internal storage is not showing 0 mb. it is showing 92 gb which is free currently, and each time after rebooting, twrp is gone, though after flashing, I hold on to power+volume up. Now please tell me the easiest solution. I gave a lot of effort in last 3 days, It's really depressing brother. But thank you for letting me know that twrp also work as MTP media.

When starting TWRP, it must ask you for (your Android screen unlock pin/password or pattern) - without, TWRP cannot temporarily decrypt the file system and you see the garbage as on your screenshot for Data and Internal memory
If you switched the ROM, you HAD to FORMAT (not Wipe) Data.
Without, TWRP does not ask for that (unlock) pin/pass (or asks but fails to decrypt) and you have the garbage.
Didn't try but that must be also the reason for side-load failure
If you didn't switch ROM (and if you can boot to Android), go to Settings and reset the screen unlock pin/pass/pattern

System partition is ro=read only in /vendor/etc/fstab.qcom and even if you would try to make it writeble through that question in TWRP, it will remain read only
But scrambled Data and Internal memory has nothing with read only /system - again, it is because of TWRP must use the Android screen unlock/pin pass.
Try to set the unlock pin to something (not empty) in Android Settings, and test again
Sorry, I'm not following now who stated what above in his earlier posts, I'm not on Pro but plain Mi 9T, with Xiaomi.eu MIUI 12.6 A11 beta, TWRP 3.5.2-9, and everything works for me as described.
Also at the time of switching to Xiaomi.eu I of course had to Format Data
And immediately after flashing TWRP I always reboot to TWRP (somebody also debated about):
fastboot oem reboot-recovery
Screenshots from TWRP attached. Observe that TWRP decrypts user space 0 (default user) but fails to decrypt 999 (second user) - that is still not supported by TWRP. Because of that, backing up Data partition fails unless I delete (from the rooted Android or from TWRP) /data/extm folder (although it's empty I have to delete the folder) before backing up /Data in TWRP

brother, twrp still not reading my internal storage even after I just gave one pin lock as you said. then , I flashed magisk 22.0 using OTG(pendrive). twrp showed done as same as youtube xda video. but, after rebooting, magisk manager is not there, only magisk app which was not opening. I installed root checker to check root and it said, device is not rooted. Please tell me brother what to do
I have just discovered, in magisk app, it says NO RAMDISK
so, I followed the official magisk website, it instructed to read instructions in xda, i came to xda, xda sent me the same page saying read the instructions there :'(

brother, if I format all the data, will it clear my rom too? or it's like factory reset? I am asking to know if I can boot back to my normal stock MIUI 12.5 .
and brother, I am sorry you felt like that, actually I meant I couldn't understand about "patching images" because my ramdisk is NO. I didn't understand the technical details of it. could you please help me?
brother, what will I do without XDA, I learnt a lot from XDA in last couple of days. I unlocked my bootloader, I installed twrp, without XDA, I can't survive on my own. Love this community and the people here.

It's like a factory reset.
Personal storage data and user installed apps will be deleted. The ROM itself will be untouched.
Try renaming the Magisk apk and change the file extension to .zip. Then flash the renamed file in TWRP.

Please take your time, do your homework, read guides here on XDA, read other Q)A threads here on XDA, all these things about formatting data (previously TWRP, etc) are described and snswered already in many orher posts
So this is really the last time I will respond you (unless I see something that I consider is really out of scope of the 'regular' knowledge that can be learned around).
Btw, when I obtained my Mi 9T, I spent full three weeks googling, reading and learning before I asked/posted my first question and started to bother the others
Hence, you can continue asking the basic things, but let somebody else answer you, I will ignore
Data is not System and by formatting Data you don't loose ROM but you loose all your apps, settings, configurations, personal files incl. photos, etc. Android will boot as the first time once again.
Hence do some backups (photos to PC, WhatsApp can be backed up from its Settings, etc) - again, google about if you are not familiar about backing up
1. ADB push does not work on production releases (MIUI).
2. Do "Format" and not "Wipe" the Data partition from twrp , it will fix your problem but you will lose all data on the phone.
Got the same problem, found a simple solution.
On your phone go to TWRP - Advanced - ADB sideload.
On your pc type
Code:
adb sideload something.zip
.
