should I move to T-mobile? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
I have been on ATT for ever and now that they are throttling my data above 5GB. I am thinking about moving to Sprint or T-mobile.
Can you share your experiences?
What is the advantage of getting the new Note 4 for T-mobile?
Is the boot loader locked? How about rooting?
How about streaming YouTube videos?
Thanks!

Don't go to sprint.
Go to tmobile.
We have an unlocked bootloader.
This is how you root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2903733
We have the most roms.
Just look in the Android Development sections for the sprint and tmobile note 4s.
I love my tmobile note 4.

I stream youtube videos all day.

I love tmobile. Check your area for coverage. If it looks good that's what I'd go with, hands down.

Yes definitely check your area for coverage first. With Tmo I'm getting about 20 Mbps download at home and about 60-70 Mbps at work. But then if I go to certain part of town I'm on E with no services.
I was beating myself up by holding onto my unlimited data plan with AT&T. Been with them since they were Cingular. If you want truly unlimited data at a reasonably speed then Tmo is the way to go. Just take a look around the development section and you'll get your answer. Good luck.

As att customer that used 25gb alone on my family account I would never leave att. Tmo spotty as hell everywhere I've lived.

I save almost $1000 a year with t-mobile compared to ATT. That was enough to make me switch lol, spotty service but I honestly dont care since I save so much. With Att I brought my own devices and had 30gbs w/ 2 lines, with tmobile 2 lines with unl everything is $100 per month . Never going to look back. Also I leave the country once or twice a year and being able to text and still use social media for free is a plus.

[Q] Gained Vivid, lost grandfathered data - any hope to get it back?

I had an unlimited $15/month data plan from back in the pre-smartphone days. I managed to get it when I had an old RAZR, and kept it through my Windows Mobile Tilt and Pure. I went in over the weekend to get the Vivid, and I managed to get it for the $99 price, but the sales rep said I needed a "qualifying data plan". I wasn't prepared for this, and since I had the kids with me I didn't have the time to really argue. I let them switch me to the $25/2GB plan.
Am I SOL now? Anyone know of a strategy for getting the unlimited back? I was never much of a data hog, I think my last month's usage was 400 mb or so. It's more the $10/month price increase that has me bummed.
On a positive note, the upgrade from an old WM 6.5 phone to the Vivid was mind blowing. Everything just WORKS, and it's so fast.
Thanks,
-Brett.
If you had the unlimited data for smartphones before the vivid, then you should have it after. If you dont, dial 611 and speak to the tech support and they can add it back.

i think you are. tbh though, 2gb is a lot for someone and very few break it. with icecream, youll be able to keep a better eye on it.
2GB is plenty. If you really are worried about it and prior to ICS, you can download 3G Watchdog in the Market. It's free and has a widget for your internet usage. Not exact, but it will give you an idea of what you are using. It will also tell you what you will end the month at if you continue your usage pattern.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm not worried about going over the 2GB cap (especially since my work offeres WIFI access so I can use that during the day). It's more of being sore at paying another $10/month on top of what already seems like an overly expensive wireless bill.
Thanks,
-Brett.
Yes you had UNLIMITED WEB prior to getting your Vivid. So that doesn't qualify for the coversion to UNLIMITED DATA. You could always try the 2G iPhone loophole
I did the same thing. Technically you aren't supposed to be able to use the $15 unlimited data package for any Smartphone, but their system didn't catch it on the Fuze (or what I had, an unlocked HD2).
I had to switch to the 2GB plan as well when I upgraded. As long as you had Smartphone Data Unlimited ($30) in the past, you can argue enough to get it added back on over the phone.
I went all the way up the support chain (And I'm an ATT Corporate Business customer) with no luck. Because I never had the Smartphone Data Unlimited in the past on this line, I wasn't grandfathered. (They checked my entire account history, all the way back to 1999).

Thats what I did. When I bought my Inspire in June I got the 2gb plan but when I read AT&T was going to grandfather customers into unlimited LTE I did the iPhone 2g trick about two weeks ago and now have unlimited LTE on my Vivid.

iPhone 2g's are like unicorns around here. I can't find one!
you wont be able to get it back
that $15 unlimited data plan is for basic messaging phones (its $10 if you have the $30 unlimited messaging feature)
the minimum data plan for a smartphone is now $15,$25, and $45.
technically you're not SOL because you were never "in luck" ahha

Hey, question for you guys. I'm not quite ready to jump on these lte phones now, but I don't want to be left out of the party if and when ATT decides to stop grandfathering unlimited plans so here's my "plan".
I go into a store, tell them I have a vivid at home, show them a picture of "my phone" with its imei, have them input it and upgrade my plan to the new LTE plan, JUST so I know I have it for the future. (Unless one of you guys want to help me out, heh heh ) Thus, I will have an LTE plan, though no LTE phone yet BUT I have a garaunteed unlimited LTE plan for when ATT gets an LTE phone I really want. Any ideas why this might be a bad idea??

If you ACTUALLY have a Vivid IMEI just call up customer service and have them do it. That's how I did the whole 2G iPhone gig.

I have the IMEI, just not the actual phone (took pictures of a few display vivids and skyrockets). But when I got my International GSII, I called in with the atrix imei and that worked so I assumed this will work. Will definitely try this... Although I think I'm going to go into the store itself just so I can hopefully WATCH them click "Unlimited" just for piece of mind...

Best value plan without contract in the USA.

Hi, I'm gonna study abroad in San francisco in a month.
Because I already have a phone and I will be staying there for 9 months i can't get a contract.
Here in France i have a contract-free plan with everything unlimited for 20€/m
My phone is a Galaxy S mtd so it will have to be GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA compatible.
Here are my average consuption per month:
-3h calls
-300 texts
- 1Gb internet (but i think i can deal with less)
I'm looking for something between 20 and 30$... I've tried to find some good value deals, but i can't seem to find any intresting thing...
thanks
What exactly do you want to get out of your $20-30? It's certainly possible but you won't be getting much. T-mobile offers no contract plans that sound along what you are talking about.
T-Mobile has a 30$ no contract PREPAID plan.
It includes
100 Minutes
Unlimited Texts
5 GB high speed data on their HSPA+ network.
You must have a phone that has access to the 1700/2100mHz (AWS) bands to get 4G (HSPA+) on T-Mobile 's network.
Otherwise, for phones with 850/1900mHz (NAM) bands you can get Straight Talk. It is 45$ a month for unlimited talk/text and about a 100MB PER DAY/2GB PER MONTH UNSPOKEN CAP... which is higher than the amount listed in the OP but keep in mind that if you go with T-Mobile and have NAM bands on your phone you will only get EDGE speed
Also this should be moved to "Networking"

T-Mobile won't be enough for him with the minutes. I suggest Virgin Mobile although their network is pretty slow, you'll get 300 min, unlimited text and 2.5 GB of data.

hum... the 30$ t-mobile plan is interesting but i cant find it on t-mobile's website!
When i was saying 20/30$ plans, i was hopping to get something similare as what i can have in France.... Here when you get something without contract, it's usually cheaper because you don't get any phone but It seems that those plans arent really populare in america...
I suppose that i can deal with edge speed, it's mainly for emails and google maps.
I looked on the mvno area too, i've found this particulary interesting plan: http://www.mycricket.com/cell-phone-plans#basic-plans unfortunaltly, it's cdma so i will have to buy a new phone there...
also, sry for the wrong sub-forum, i missed the networking part.

Why is no one discussing Simple Mobile? - UPDATED W/MY EXPERIENCE SO FAR

I'm curious why no one discusses Simple Mobile as an option for their new Nexus 4? Just like Straight Talk, Simple Mobile is owned by TracFone, and uses T-Mobile towers. I've also read on other forums that they are no as strict about their data usage as Straight Talk is. I know Simple Mobile used to be their own thing until earlier this year when acquired by TracFone.

im currently using T-Mo with the Nexus 4, id like to use one of the ones mentioned above but, id like to find out ahead of time what would the download speed of the 4G would look like .
right now im getting atleast 9-12Mgps here in NYC, soon will be moving to DALLAS TX in the next day .
so yeah
Simple caps you right at 2gb. And if you tether for more than an hour or so you get a warning. And they're customer service is terrible. Better off just paying the extra $10 a month for the tmo prepaid, at least you get voice/text roaming with them

TRUE,
Thought straight talk in the US has unlimited everything at $45 a month .
but the data is shared i guess whatever that mean . .
they also tell you that if they feel like you are using too much 4g bandwith, they have the right to slow your speed down, who knows how !
It's because straight talk basically has the same plan for $5 cheaper.
I looked into it and decided to stick with T mobile value plans. For two lines it wasn't much more than the other stuff.
I did a lot of searching and saw data cap talk after 2gb and other things so I decided not worth the hassle to save a couple of bucks.
nypions cke
Im using Straight Talk and for $41.50 a month I could not be more satisfied. So far I'm LOVING the service
I'll be using it with Simple. I have heard that they have severe caps in the 2-3GB range, but I don't use much data (<1GB) so I haven't experienced a hard cap. Also, they've recently included 250MB at "4G" before they throttle down to "3G." I use quotes because the speeds are laughable. For "4G" down, I get around 3Mb/s. For 3G down, it's around 300Kb/s. I can't complain since data isn't a huge deal for me, but it is for most people. But at $40/month, this isn't too bad.
9nly reason why I stay with Simple Mobile is because of the free internatinal texting. Their data speeds arent all that great but I am always mostly on wifi.

Do you know if they have rollover minutes like Tracfone?
Well, I've never used them personally. I just knew they were an option, and I wondered why people never mention them.
As for data speeds, it would be the same as on T-Mobile.
On capping, I heard that Straight Talk was more strict on that than Simple Mobile is. I read somewhere that Simple Mobile used to be hardcore about capping you at a certain point, but since they were purchased by TracFone, it all changed. Again, this is what I've read, and it could be totally wrong.
Simplemobile, I had them fly almost 2 years. Supposedly they have no cap but they showed me the rules where it says they can sit you down any time your usage is effecting others.
I am dumping them for tmob $30 prepaid. With simple I could not get PayPal notifications or Google. it is something with those short numbers. Ticked me off many times.

Yeah, but basically every carrier in the US with an "Unlimited" data option has that clause in their user agreement. I'm currently with Boost Mobile, and I think that they term it as "fair use". Either way, with my current data speeds, and my crummy phone, I would have to try incredibly hard to even hit 1gb a month compared to how much I use now. I would be surprised if I even break 250mb as it currently stands.

Straightalk is far from unlimited data...they usually cap you around 2-3 gigs. T-Mobile Simple plan does that around 5 gigs from what I understand. Straightalk is not a good option for data users...good for talkers though.

I went with the $60 Monthly 4G plan from TMo... because over the past two years I have averaged about 1.1 GBs of data on Verizon (I switch to WiFi whenever I can) + the free roaming on TMo.
Additionally, I have used TMo before, and had a good experience... so went back to them.
If anything, I would like to switch to the $30 Monthly 4G plan... and try VOIP... I think that is best route for a value customer (or a customer who doesn't want to get butt raped by greedy carriers)

That's not true. Just because they use T-mobile doesn't mean the speeds are the same.

My switch from ATT, if T-Mo good in Chicago ?

I have been on ATT in the Chicago burbs for a few years now, been happy and satisfied with their service, no issues, and we have a good plan = 2 lines Unlimited minutes Unlimited texts, and 10GB shared Data for $130/Month. And with me on next it is $155/Month.
But I always like to at least root my Wife's phone for AdAway and XPosed stuff to tweak her phones better, and me I always root, and install Custom Recovery and ROM my phones, right now on a HTC One M8 converted to GPE and love this phone.
My point is, ATT has gotten worse and worse the last 18 months with locking down their phones, even root can take months to come by on flagship phones. And on principle it is really pissing me off, why give ATT money, if they won't even let me customize my phone anymore ? The ATT Note 2 I had two years ago, was the last best ATT phone IMO, I rooted it and ROM'd the heck out of that phone, but sadly with the new Note 4 those days are long gone and history with ATT.
Long story short, does T-Mobile offer competitive plans to what i currently have ? And how is their service in Chicago area ? Thank you
Well, you have two choices based on what you're interested in:
1. Switch service to T-Mobile. I also live in Chicago. The service isn't as good as AT&T here in the city, or elsewhere. LTE/3G data doesn't penetrate buildings as well. The calling and texting seems to be about the same when towers are near, but I know for a fact that AT&T has them beat in terms of coverage outside of major metro areas. I frequently drive between Chicago and Indianapolis- AT&T has 4G or LTE about 85% of the drive, while T-mobile will barely get phone calls to go through, much less high speed data. T-Mobile is cheaper service than AT&T, but you're getting what you pay for.
2. Buy the T-Mobile Note 4 off-contract and unlock it for AT&T. There are lots of threads here on xda about this- and it's what I've just done with my T-Mo note 4! I had done the same with my Note 3, there are presently no issues with t-mobile samsungs and at&T. connecting to LTE, phone calls, mms, sms, etc all works perfectly.
As you said, the AT&T variants are locked down and will probably remain that way. The ONLY note 4 you can buy that has the unlocked bootloader AS WELL AS support for LTE networks in the United States is the T-mobile Note 4. How much of a premium are you willing to pay for having the unlocked bootloader, is what you need to ask yourself. An off contract Note 4 from T-mobile costs $850 after Illinois taxes, and you'll need to activate the line for at least one day, meaning a few more bucks.
Hope that helps. I would go with option #2, especially if you're like me- grandfathered unlimited data from at&t.
obviously, the cost of the note 4's from t-mobile will decrease after the product is widely available and the initial hype dies down. So if you're enjoying your M8, wait a few months and grab a note 4 from swappa.com, ebay, or craigslist
Good points thanks.
I would almost like to test drive T-Mobile first for like a week, see how it is around town and in my office, etc... I am happy with ATT the past couple years, good service, it's just the principle of them locking down phones really irks me, and makes me want to take business elsewhere.
hey man, nice to see you here
I dont know about that other dude, but my service in the burr ridge/willowbrook area is fantastic with T-mobile
Also, I travel through lombard/villa park/elmhurst alot, and always have super strong signal, and in 8 months, I dont think I have dropped a single call; 4g speeds usually between 15-35 down, and 6-15 up, so I am one happy camper with Tmobile in chicagoland..

Hello neighbor
I work in Willowbrook, and most of my business is in the western burbs, so thanks for your input.
And the principle of the idea is pushing me away from ATT, the whole lockdown is so upsetting.
How quick is a port of our numbers from ATT to T-Mobile, if I pick up the Note 4 ?
If I recall, when I switched, the number porting was done by the time we left the store!
just bring in your old ATT bill, and make sure you know the password on your ATT account, and the porting should be really fast..
I am in IL, but downstate and live in the Metro St. Louis area. The comments about T-Mo coverage are spot on. If you are downtown, or within about a 10-15 mile radius of it, you should be good. I was a long time Verizon customer, and I jumped to T-Mo when VZW pissed me off with that "network optimization" nonsense.
My experience at the office with T-Mo has been great. Faster even that Verizon. At home (30 miles NE of downtown STL) it is a different story. Maybe 1 bar of HSPA (never LTE) inside my house. I don't travel much, so I can't comment there yet, but I will say that if you spend a lot of time on the road you probably are best off buying the T-Mo Note 4 and staying with AT&T.
I really like what T-Mo is trying to do, they just have to get more towers out there.
Porting the number takes less than 30 seconds flat... It is incredibly fast. (done it already with 2 lines from AT&T to T-Mobile) Now I have 3 lines in total with T-Mobile, (an old one plus 2 new ones coming from AT&T)

How did you get tmo to give you an Asus router? I just switched from att to tmo here in jersey and my reason was for cheaper prices. I'm still within my 14 days but I will say I'm impressed so far. Greats LTE speeds, no issues with calls. I have derive at work & home so I think I'll be staying. I'm on the note 3 now waiting for n4 pre-order.

Well, you have two choices based on what you're interested in:

So can you confirm the t mobile note 4 works fine with 4g lte on att? How did you unlock it? I current have the att note 3 on contract so would be paying out of contract prices and it seems to make more sense to go with t mobile if I want to customize it at some point or switch to t mobile later on. Also the t mobile note 4 is cheaper out of contract than att. If you are currently using the t mobile note 4 on att and everything works that's the route I'm going to go too. Just waiting for someone to verify that works as there are some threads with people having issues when going this route with the note 3. I've also heard if att ever asks for your imei or other phone info you should give them the numbers from an older att phone so they don't blacklist you and block you from using lte.

correct about the imei. phone's working fine for me. speed tests are great, no issues with any LTE coverage. Maybe a little better than my previous phone- the T-mo Note 3 unlocked on AT&T.
I found a seller on eBay who got me the code. There's a thread in the questions/problems section that discusses my guys and all the other sellers.

Best MVNO youve used

This thread is to hopefully open up a conversation about the MVNOs that you guys have used and what your experiences were. Useful info are the model of G900 you use, what service provider it was (straight talk, cricket etc) and what towers they connected to along with price for service provided.
I was on straight talk with my G900P and had the unlimited talk/text with 5GB of LTE and unltd after that at snail speed for $45 ($43 with autopay) and it used at&t towers. I was getting 10 MBp/s and never really ran into service issues in Sioux Falls, SD where i live. I recently switched to H2O wireless for the same service but with 3GB of data. Same towers, same everything else but at $27/mo with autopay.
What do you guys use out there?

right on! thanks the deal im gettin gon H2O is pretty solid so far, but am very open to suggestion from what y'all are using. Thanks for replying!
I'm on Boost. 40 a month, after auto pay, 5gb that grows up to like 8 eventually although I never hit my 5. Unlimited talk and text obviously.
just switched the fiancee over to H2O wireless the other day on her OnePlus 2, and its working quite well. It has all the LTE bands enabled on it unlike my G900P, so its speed blows mine away. $27/mo for 3 GB is pretty awesome!!
I've been using straight talk for couple years now. Never had any problems with them but if h2o is cheaper why not right?
Can I keep my number to switch to h2o?
Know if they use att or t-mobile towers?

i ported my number from ST to H2O, they use at&t towers. Had it for 3 weks now and the service is pretty dang good. as good as, if not better than ST. Theyre running a promo right now too. Also can get a sim from amazon for a penny with free shipping without the need of prime
Does H2O's monthly pay ($27) include taxes & fees like Cricket's plans?

I just switched to H2O from Cricket a week ago. For 36$ a month, I get the same amount of data as I did on the Cricket 45$ plan plus I have international texting. The problem is the speed. Everyone was saying the H2O network speed was unthrottled but I dont get more than 4mbps download, which is about half the speed I had on Cricket. Probably the most annoying issue is the lack of visual voicemail and the inability to use Google Voice or Youmail. I should have done more research before switching. I will be leaving H2O as soon as I possibly can.

Good feedback, thanks. What state are you in?
I'm on ST now but wanted to switch. I don't use much data, maybe 3-4GB but I do see speeds of 18-24Mbps. I'm in SoCal. Maybe I could try cricket but I hear they also charge taxes fees which is why I wanted to change. ST comes to $48.90 per line after fees.

I'm in Maryland. I was a Cricket customer for a couple of years and never had any issues with the network. The main annoyance was needing an app from the Play Store that was 10mb or more in size and then painfully waiting for the download. Youtube videos played fine. I read on forums that H2O speeds were not throttled like Cricket so I transferred my number. It was a big mistake. I confirmed with H2O customer support that data speed depends on the plan you purchase. For the 40$ a month plan data is capped at 4mbps, for the 60$ a month I was told they cap it at 12mbps. This is still comparable to the regular Cricket speeds. I should also add that the amateurish issue with the APN settings on H2O is baffling. There are literally dozens of different APN settings suggested online and to make things even more confusing the network speed is exactly the same no matter which one I use! The settings on the H2O website didn't allow me to use MMS. In summary, while I think the international texting is convenient, H2O is absolutely not worth the money.

I have a $30 H2O plan. I get a speed ranging from 8mbps to 40mbps, but mostly 10mbps.
I use Straight Talk as of recently and I don't really have any issues with them. I pay $45 a month for 5GB of high speed data (unlimited 2G after that) and unlimited talk/text. I use a Verizon Galaxy S5 and after it took literally 8 hours to activate, it is now working excellent.
Im using my ATT S5 on Straighttalk's 45/mo with 5GB. I may upgrade to their unlimited because I haven't been anywhere that I don't have great service except for some nowhere towns. I usually get between 25-50Mb down and 6-10Mb up using my S5 and my N6.
Ting. Best customer experience ever.
