Flashing CM or any other custom ROM alike will require you to unlock the bootloader. You could try another stock based customized rom and see how you like them. I used a stock 5.0.2 rom for a good while and after rooting, debloated it myself and got exposed running just fine. In my experience, it might not be worth unlocking if you're not like me and use your phone more as a nice toy rather than a phone (or whatever these gadgets should be called..)

well, unfortunately I can't unlock, first phone I've had that can't!
xposed is working, just not some of the modules
where would I go to.find these other stock based roms?
so far no luck finding them, CM based ones are everywhere

I should add one of my main motivations is to stop the battery drain by Google Services.

Try and error which work. Gravitybox works f.e. For google drain, try greenify the google service framework. But u will need donate version of greenify for greenifying system apps

thanks for the info
found some roms, but not sure about trying yet
really wish I could unlock this bootloader!
I have the donate package for greenify and the xposed module works, same for amplify
still got the drain though. guess I haven't found the correct combination yet
trial and error time

It doesn't take long to make a backup of your current setup and restoring one is a breeze. Only yesterday I tried a couple or roms in an hour or so and restored back as if nothing had happened. So I urge you to try whatever is available. Once you've done it a couple of times, it's not a big deal anymore
BTW, how calm are you not able to unlock the bootloader?

Some carrier branded phones CAN NOT be unlocked. Not sure why though

[Q] USB Port broke...How to update...OTA won't work

I have a 6606 that I rooted and now the USB port is broke. The OTA update to 4.2.2 won't work (Due to root) and the usb port is broke so I can't load via flashtool ftf. I did remove SU, thinking the OTA would work and it did not.
1) What options do I have?
2) Is there a way to remove root completely so the OTA will load/install?
3) Would the device Factory Reset remove the root 100% so the OTA would install? (I was trying to avoid as I don't want to lose my son's minecraft game data)
Thank you kindly,
Randy

1) I am thinking..
2+3) maybe there are some unroot apps in playstore. I never tryed someone so I can not say if it works. With a factory reset I think you will less root. But wait with it and give me 20 mins. I do a backup in CWM and after that I will try it for you
You can try to convert(?) the ftf file in a flashable zip. But I don't know how to do that.. -.-
Edit: Ok, I tryed it(I have not choosed delete internal datas too) SuperSu was there also CWM..
Thank you for trying and if you come up with anything good, holla at me!

Factory Reset ? ODB over WiFi any use to you ? (Kernel dependent)
why get the ota update? install recovery if you havent already, and flash a stock deodexed rom based on tbe semi-latest firmware, or a custom rom of your choice. The tmobile os is crap anyway and full of thingz to kill your battery and performance. Also the latest update isnt 4.3 or 4.4 anyway as far as im aware, so you cant be losing much that xposed or custom roms cant give you.

what i mean it if otas causing you trouble just go with tbe custom rom. there are RomAur and deodexed stock that do everything the oem does and even look likr them. the latest tmobile update doesnt do **** for your phone except help tmobile. and i can say from experience that regardless. of the rom on your phone, the txg message about bills will still come though.

root, lollipop, xposed questions

first, sorry if this has been asked b4, xda/google saeearch didn't find anything.
I need xposed, and I also need root. ( both, root for other things besides xposed.)
just got my moto g2, 4.4.4., and I wanted to know, should I root now, or wait till the 5.0 update and then root? or should I root now and install xposed and not update to 5.0 when it comes out? I read online that there probably will not be xposed fully working on lollipop.
advice anyone?
Root it now, you can aways install the update on your phone, rooted or not.

Only if you want to receive it by OTA, besides that, it doesn't matter if you are fully stock or not.
There are some known issues relocking bootloader and returning to stock at all. In most of all cases it works without problems but not in all. If you can´t get back to stock there still will be future options to get lollipop,by sideloading as a zip though recovery for example, ota is not the only way.
I am still on stock 4.4.4 and will wait for the ota, then relock bootloader and root. The Moto G is the first phone I didn´t root at once because it works really good and has farly not as much crapware as others, so I´m able to wait. But I don´t need xposed desperatly, I badly need Adway,Titanium and some others more.
It´s still not clear if xposed will work under lollipop.
So it´s your choice, it´s up to you. You can stay on Kitkat, root and install xposed. And you can update to lollipop later,when/if xposed is running.
Or you can stay stock, wait for ota and root later wich is my way.
Coming from 2 nexus devices, i can't imagine to have a phone without unlocked bootloader, root, custom rom and kernel, that's the point of android for me, customization
Thanks all for your responses! Much appreciated! Now all i have to do is find some way of rooting the thing, vroot failed- first time ever for me
To root Moto G 4.4.4 you have to unlock the bootloader, install custom recovery and flash superSU.zip.
Just follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/guide-root-moto-g-2nd-gen-2014-t2874245
But use the CWM-recovery from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/recovery-cwm-philz-touch-6-moto-g-2014-t2896586
or TWRP from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-0-1-moto-g-2014-t2896165

Extreme lag stock 7.1.1

Hi, I have been seeing significant lag of my phone and various times to the point that my phone becomes inoperable for a period of time and after the phone recovers it never goes back to full speed., I have to restart. I'm stock not rooted anymore and recently formatted and started from scratch but see no improvement. This is especially annoying when running android auto at which point the phone and the app barely work. Any suggestions? I don't think its a better thing because i had it happen at 60 and at 40 though definitely see it more at 40 or less. Is there a good way to see what app might be causing this?
Install a different kernel. Stock is garbage
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
I don't think k I want to root again.
You don't need root to install a custom kernel. In fact you don't even need to install TWRP. Using ADB you can flash the custom kernel. Just make sure you have USB debugging enabled in Developer Options and make sure your bootloader is unlocked.

Same exact issue here. F*** Google for screwing up our stock phones and not fixing them. What would you suggest for a kernal and rom. It has been a long time since I was rooted with a custom rom but I can't take this for another day.

Hello... I think all ROMs perform the same in term of fluidity and speed. Some have different features and customization options. I run Pure Nexus on my N6, N6P and Pixel XL. All use ElementalX kernel. I like this configuration. But there is a lot of different possibilities.
I suggest you to look at the forum and read a little bit the first posts of the different ROMs/kernels and see what they have to offer. :good:
Good luck...
I've had this same exact issue. I thought about switching back to MM because I had great battery life on MM. I also thought about flashing Franco Kernel and go from there. It is one that has the option to hide that the bootloader is unlocked. I don't really want to have my bootloader unlocked, and I don't think I can make changes to the kernel easily without having it rooted, something else I also don't want to do. Maybe MM is the best option. Google is still sending out security updates for MM.
Well problem solved I should say. Used nexus root kit to root and install Pure nexus. Only issue I had was I had a gapps from 2015 that crashed everything so I reinstalled with a new gapps. Working great and the speed is back.
Then unless you wanted an old copy, you downloaded the wrong version of Pure Nexus. The latest version includes the Google apps in the ROM, eliminating the need to flash a GApps package.

Note 8 Root Advancement Query

Hello, I'm wondering if they've made any advancement on the Samfail root method for the Note 8 AT&T version. I'm finding that I'm running into circumstances where I need to be able to flash a zip. This is still not possible, correct?

Just check the Samfail thread. It's up to v3 for the latest 7.1.1 software we have. It does not root Oreo, but it will downgrade you from it back to 7.1.1 to be able to root.

Full root as in TWRP and such? We have full root but with a locked bootloader. Flashfire can be used to flash stock roms for the Snapdragon variant. Safestrap was just released for it as well but currently only the "Stock" slot can be used. And yes the 80% battery limit is very much still there.
So I can actually flash custom roms with this lock bootloader on this variant? Also, safestrap will allow me to flash custom roms as well?

Currently there are only 2 roms we can flash. FENNEC and Culpeo.
FENNEC is based on the U1 (unlocked firmware), so there's no carrier bloatware.
Culpeo is based on U or carrier firmware. The bloat will come with the CSC you flash for your particular firmware. There are CSC edits in there for things such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, etc.
These are both based on the latest 7.1.1 version respectively. I have personally ran both but I was partial to FENNEC because I hate carrier bloat.
Both are located on the Development section. There are more roms coming so don't be deterred.

In the Safestrap thread there were a few users that had that issue occur. I don't know what the Fix was for them, if it was fixed, as I haven't followed that development for a few days now. I suggest giving the OP of that thread a full read through again and read through the comments/replies of what others have done so far to solve their issues.
Thanx Jammol. Actually perused that before my last post. Will look again. Hope I missed something, but I dont think so.

2020 Guide to Root the XZ1C ?

Hi there !
So for the first time in years of ownership, I am interested in Rooting.
Naturally I searched around here, but could only find 2017 and 2018 threads with many problems and various bugs.
For an April 2020 guy, rooting is stock latest ROM, and interested in keeping stock but go rooted (mostly to block some Android trash) - What is the easiest way, can I have a link that is updated, or a paid tool I can buy and not mess with anything ?
Thanks a lot !

Too much mess for my blood !
How much would It be to hire your service via screenshare ?
PM me please
Keep in mind I only want a root so I can disable some stock google trash with F-Droid apps.... I don't really need a new ROM, or do I ?
I rooted mine on stock just a few weeks ago.
All I did was unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, then flash the latest magisk. I then used Titanium Backup to remove the bloat. It was quick and painless.
Thanks !
Which thread did you use as guide/link glossary ?
I didn't use a guide, just did it based on experience rooting my Sony devices from before. But I can write up something brief. How much knowledge do you have rooting devices?

I wouldn't want to do it that way, and if you do it yourself you'll gain a little experience which makes restoring or further modding easier.

If you want to root you need to unlock the bootloader, if you're unlocking your BL then it's advised to backup your DRM keys and restore them after unlocking your BL which is a one time process. Everything you need is in the thread I've linked to above.
Thanks SX. I have seen a lot of your work around here doing searches, and I'm honored that you reply to my question
I will have a crack at it, I have done those things before but I remember not leaving the house for a few days, so it scarred me a bit
Haha
One last question if I may.... Do you believe that installing Lineage with no google on the xz1c is worth it? I guess it's a general question, but what I'm really asking is, should I even bother with rooting for privacy if my end goal isn't to flash Lineage ?
OK, after some more research, I have decided that what I really want to do is just install the 17v LineageOS version for the XZ1C.... It is my understanding it is possible without a root. ?
For sure the bootloader needs unlocking and TWRP to backup/flash correct ?
Super SU, does that make my procedure easier in any way ?
It is my understanding that if I flash a Lineage OS after unlocking via code and flashing TWRP, then the camera and all will still work.
Considering I don't mind binning that phone if I get sick of Lineage (I have like four of those in a box) - Can I skip the TA backup and restore ?
Apologies for the newb questioning, just trying to "get the hang" of it so I actually understand what i'm doing rather than just follow guides.
I'm a bit older than all you guys so forgive me
I'm running lineage 16.1 on root with unlocked bootloader without restoring TA. But I didn't care about preserving the keys. Yes camera works great and everything is super stable.
You don't have to root lineage so if you need help best to narrow down what exactly you want to do as there are many possibilities.

Absolutely, you're right !
I will be as specific as I can:
Sony abandoned the XZ1C, so I want to swap to Lineage OS with a full heart with no Gapps (i'll manage).
Here is what I understand tell me if I am correct:
1. Unlock bootloader via sony website
2. Flash latest TWRP
3. Use it to flash 17.1 Lineage OS from the genius dude (mod punk?)
4. Happy days
5. If modpunk updates it, will I be able to update with no reformatting ?

Yep that's about right. Unlock bootloader with Flash Tool by getting unlock code from Sony. Flash TWRP in fastboot mode. Boot to TWRP and flash lineage 17.1. If you don't need gapps you're good to go.
As for lineage updates probably best to check with the thread. Usually you can dirty flash, i. e. flash new version over the old and it should be ok. Lastly check to see if they're are any major bugs with 17.1. Since it's so new there could be issues. 16.1 is smooth fast and stable if you ever need to go back to it.

Superb, thank you so much ! What a wonderful community. I feel like im stealing. I will be sure to donate !
One question, may I use adb tools for the bootloader ?
No problem. That one I'm not sure about. I've only used flash tool myself but adb tools should work with the right commands.
Yay for me !
Bootloader unlocked, onto recovery and LOS
I did it !
Thanks yall
I get this horrible " please lock the bootloader" greeting when I turn on the device, for 5 seconds.
Is that normal for everyone ?

Considering I don't mind binning that phone if I get sick of Lineage (I have like four of those in a box) - Can I skip the TA backup and restore ?

You've got 4 XZ1Cs in a box?

It is yes, you'll have to live with that unfortunately. In regards to the TA, I would have taken the time to back them up, that'll matter should you wish to return to stock. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. But you've achieved what you wanted to which is all that matters. :good:
Thank you sir !
You're probably right, I just couldn't be bothered... Sometimes 20 minutes more is like a life long more
Well, now that all is installed....
So when modpunk stopps working on the project (like sony stopped working on the xz1) - Will it be safe to just continue using the phone without updates at all ?
Or is the eventual doom of all ROM Flashers is to come back to stock (but then, it doesn't get updates anymore also...)
So does it matter in which platform I remain outdates ?
Re the XZ1's, I knew that this was going to be the last proper small phone so I made sure to stock. I plan to carry these into 2022 …….
Problem is, I think even in box without, the batteries will die out. So I'm not sure how smart I was when I got several.
All in all, for all phones I paid less than one iPhone so I'm pretty happy, but hopefully a lab can change the batteries on them.

I believe it is recommended to charge lithium-ion batteries fully every other month or so to keep it healthy.
If you are rooted I recommend checking out the ACC magisk module and controller app. This allows the phone to stop charging when the battery level has reached a certain level. In the long run keeping your device charged between I think 80% - 20% will increase your battery longevity by 200% (sorry I don't remember the exact study this was from).
And I agree the XZ1c is the last proper small phone. I've rebuilt mine from one sold for parts from eBay and now it feels like new.
About the security:
If you want to you can keep a look out for specific vulnerabilities in Android after the last security patch released for the custom rom.
https://source.android.com/security/bulletin
But in general by not connecting to sketchy WiFi hotspots, being un-rooted, having se-linux on enforcing, and running af-wall (requires root permissions) or another firewall you should be good for a while.
I think it really depends on what security issues get discovered in the future and what vulnerabilities your specific use case opens you up to.
