Bug: Headphones and Lock Screen - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I've been meaning to post about this ever since the last OTA. I've been having a problem with audio coming out the phone speaker when headphones are connected.
Here are the steps to reproduce to bug:
1) Enable a pattern screen lock.
2) Plug in headphones and listen to music.
3) Hit "Lock your phone now" in the notification pull-down menu.
4) Unlock the phone using your pattern.
After 4), audio comes out of the phone speaker, not the headphones. Has anyone else noticed this? I usually use trusted devices with my Android wear watch to keep my phone unlocked. That effectively works around the bug most of the time. But, when I'm on a plane it's pretty annoying. If I want to skip past a song I need to first unlock the phone, which triggers the bug and tends to bother my seatmate.

I just tried it twice and it doesn't happen to me, maybe it has something to do with the app you are using for music? I'm using Google play music.

Odd. Thanks for trying. It happens to me with every app (including Play Music). And all system audio is redirected to the phone speaker.
Just to confirm, you're using a pattern unlock, not just a swipe, right?
Probably the only "weird" thing about my setup is that I have VPN credentials protected in the hardware keystore. But it doesn't seem like that should impact audio in any way.

Yup, I made sure it was a pattern...maybe the upcoming lollipop update will fix it

Audio Jack bug?

Ok so at work I use my phone as my improved iPod. So lets say I pause the song that I was playing and shut the screen back off. My problem occurs when I unplug the headphones from the jack is that it all the sudden starts playing music again, and the phone doesn't register its playing. I have to quickly goto the music app hit play and pause again to get it to stop.
Anyone else have this?
CM 5.0.5.3
Also ran 5.0.5.1 experimental build
its because the headphone jack supports (4 pin i think) headsets that have the skip/play/pause buttons on them and the headphones you are using prolly are only the 2 pin ones without the extra buttons...
I've defintely reproduced this bug. Im not quite sure what i did that caused it but it was very weird, i had to go to the music app and press play and stop again. At first i brought down the notifications slider and i was like wtf. I am also on 5.0.5.3

Is there anyone that can confirm this? That would be pretty nifty.
Edit - nvm the headphones that come with the nexus have the control thing. Ill test this out to see if it still does the bug.

I also have this bug. Are you using MusicZing Lite? It happens to me all the time, and sometimes I have to restart the phone. It's very annoying.
BTW It happened to me using the stock headphones and my sony inline control headphones so yes I can confirm it happens to 4 pin connetions.
From what I understood though CM said its an app problem.

Nah, I'm just using the stock Music app. =/
On a side note - it happened to me at school last night, should have seen the look on everyones faces when my phone started blasting After the Burial. lol
It just did it to me right now. What i did exactly was i was going to listen to a song on my phone (im at work) with my headphones and so i plugged them in, but then i realized i can just stream it from somewhere on my work computer and so i unplugged them before i even opened the music app and it started playing my music. Hmmm this bug is starting to get annoying.
and my headphones are not 4 pin
Autostarts is available on the market - it should allow you to disable this feature/bug.
I believe it's 'Headset plugged or unplugged' - just disable the Music player and you should be good to go.
Cheers
If you're already happy with MixZing, ^3, or one of the other third party music apps, you could also just delete Music.apk; this also fixes the problem.
(Noted as following: playing music in any app via headphones, stop music, unplug headphones, music would start playing via the music app only; IE, despite not having used music app in that session, I'd have to open it, and play&pause to stop the music).
Problem is now gone, along with Music.apk.

Focus S Headphones Controller Not Working

The phone rocks, but it does have some flaws. Right now I can't seem to pause and play without pressing the button on the headphones like 2 or 3 times. I tested out a few headphones that I know worked on my old Focus and my iPhone and they don't work consistently either.
I also tried the Focus S headphones on my iPhone and it works perfectly. Anyone experience this?
you know i have, i've been posting (*****ing) about this since sunday I'm suspecting a major flaw in the design of the jack itself, but we'll see. The next track/previous track doesn't seem to work at all, and the pause/play seems to take some manipulation to work
this happens to me as well, kind of really annoying, and really my only gripe with the phone.
I get a popping sound through the speakers in my car (AUX plug) when I change from track to track. I am using the same cord I used to use with my Focus and I've checked my Focus S in both of my cars that have an AUX input.
Has anyone else tried this?
Plug your phone into your car using a male-to-male 3.5 cord and play your music through it. When you change from one track to the next you'll hear a popping sound. It's much louder in my Lexus vs my Impala but it's obvious in both cars.
I am also having both the controller issue and the "popping" sound through the speakers of my car.
The volume buttons seem to work, but the play/pause button only works when I hold the button for a second or two before letting it go. Because you have to hold it for a second before it registers, you can't use it to go back or forward through songs. I tried the controller from my Venue Pro in the Focus S with the same results, so the problem is probably with the phone itself and not the controller.
Whenever I have an AUX cable plugged into my car with the engine on, I can here a loud whining noise that I assume is the cable acting as an antenna and picking up noise. When I plug in the DVP, it seems to sort of ground the cable and stop picking up noise even when music isn't playing. With the Focus S, the noise continues when the phone is plugged in and only stops when music is playing. During the short time between songs, music is not playing and there seems to be a sort of noise spike that makes a "popping" sound.
I suspect both of these problems are related and have to do with the jack as jmerrey suggests.
I have been having the same issues with both the Car playback and the controls on headsets. I really hope they fix this major flaw. This phone will go back if not.

FYI I am using a stereo Bluetooth headset from Motorola and do not see any of the above issues.
Volume up/down, pause/play and skip forward and back all work as expected.

that's because the issue stems from the actual headphone jack, it's not a software or firmware problem, but a hardware issue.
Okay I figured out how to get the controller to work pretty much 100% of the time. You can't just press the button, you have to hold it down for about half a second for it to pause and play consistently. Any more or any less than half a second and it won't work. I've been doing this for pretty much the entire day and it seems to be working now. Little annoying that it works on a delayed press but its better than not working at all.
Yes, but you still don't get the double press for next track, or triple for previous track. I've been able to get the double press to work a few times, but that's it. I've also noticed that with aftermarket sets, like a beats headset, it's incredibly inconsistent. I really hope this is fixable with a software patch, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have only volume up on all type of press button.
anyone hear if this is going to be addressed or if it has been acknowledged?
thanks
I have the same problem with my Focus S. The volume buttons are working fine, the problem occurs only with the play / pause button.
If you want to play / pause you have to hold the button longer than just the usual
short click. If you know the trick it works most of the time for play / pause, switching songs with a double click is almost impossible and very hard to time.
I tried it with the original headset from my Focus S and with the Nokia purity all have the same problems.
I also tried the all headsets with my Lumia 800 and a Omnia W all working fine.
It seems to be a Focus S only problem, not sure if it is hardware or software related.
I'm on 8107 using 2103.11.10.1 Firmware would a hard reset solve the problem??
firmware issue
I have experienced all of these problems above and here are a few tips/fixes and ideas. First with the headset controller on the ear buds, I noticed if you press harder it picks it up easier. If you get it down just right you can time it for going forward and backwards. Still not a real fix. Its definitely the phone because it works on my focus, iPhone, and mac. Also, I think it may be firmware related because the popping occurs between songs for the aux cable in the car only when audio isn't playing, so I would assume it had something to do with the firmware, not the hardware. It distinctly gets quieter when music plays, even if the music is silent (just knowing something is playing is enough for it to shut up). Also I noticed that when I plug in my phone for battery, it connects, disconnects and then reconnects. I noticed this with the vibration (should only be once, actually is 2-3 times). And when battery is low you notice because you plug in, it disconnects and you get a notice of critically low battery, and then it connects. I think this may be the firmware that all the ports seem to turn on and off whenever given any form of stimulus (data or power sent through them).

Tango and the new Samsung Firmware fixed this issue!!!
Now i can listen to my music how it is meant to be!!!
:victory::victory::victory:
i got tango, but no new firmware. Which update updated the firmware?
I got Tango, but I had to hard reset my Focus S to get the Firmwareupdate.
Maybe because I InterOP unlocked my Focus S, I'm not sure why it worked after a Hard Reset.
My Software is now:
OS: 7.10.8773.98
Firmware: 2103.12.05.2
yes but didnt the LE2 software update disable your ability to interop unlock your device?
if we can get the phone accept our own signed cabs we can extract the driver updates, fixes and patches and ignore the diagnostic tool updates that disable our interop unlock method.
in short make a backup BEFORE applying any samsung OEM updates, when you need to interop unlock again, you can revert to your pre OEM update, apply the interop unlock again, then re apply the OEM update. from what i gather you are best doing this every time you have an OS update as there have been issues with restoring backups that cross OS versions...
Oh course you lose any unbacked up txts etc, but i think the benifit outweighs the hassle.

[Q] Strange headset notification problems

Hi, just upgraded from my Galaxy Note to the z1 yesterday.
Very impressed with the phone so far, but I have encountered one strange problem that I can seem to find no other comments about.
When I connect a headset (the bundled one, specifically) and turn my phone to silent mode so I can enjoy my audiobook in peace without being bothered every time I get a new promotional email, the notification sound plays over and pauses my audio book.
It does this no matter whether I turn the phone to silent, vibrate, turn the ringtone and notification volume to 0, and whether or not I make these changes manually or allow the smart connect app to make them for me.
The strange thing is, it only plays the notification sounds when something is playing through the headset. When I'm sitting just using the headset as a handsfree then everything behaves as expected - if a notification comes in, the phone will vibrate, flash the notification led, but won't make a peep otherwise. But as soon as media is playing, the phone seems to make up its own mind to vibrate and play the notification sound even though I've put it on silent.
Am I the only one experiencing this bug, or, more surprisingly, am I the only one who finds it hugely irritating?
Can anyone else even confirm if this behaviour is normal or is there something bugged out?
Over 60 views and no one can even confirm if this is actually how the phone is meant to deal with notifications?
Yes, I think is just You. Anyway, you have to play with settings because there have to be the solution, if you do not that mean is how supposed to be. If you are Rooted maybe you can edit some notification so if they will not show up you will not listen the sound in the handset.
I've tried everything! On my other phones (used an htc desire hd and a galaxy note) once I had my phone on silent then I didn't get audible notifications whether I had a headset plugged in or not. On the Z1 though I can't seem to get rid of them. I only hear them when I'm playing music, I wouldn't mind if it gave me an audible notification if I just had my headset plugged in as a handsfree and wasn't listening to anything, but having my music interrupted is pretty annoying, and I still don't even know if it's just something stupid I'm doing or if that's just the way it is.
I'm not rooted, I don't really want to since it stops sky go from working, but if it can stop the notification headache I might be willing. Don't really want to install a custom ROM unless the camera performance is as good as stock either
Yeah, I get it too. Too lazy to check the player settings though so not sure if it is something in the player settings that is doing this

Good point, can be the player too.
haven't seen anything in the walkman or audible apps to turn this off and never had to do it on my previous phones. oh well, at least i know it's normal now, hopefully they fix it in an update. thanks.

[Q] Moto X and external bluetooth controls

Hey guys, newcomer here. Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I've got some serious bluetooth flakiness going on with my Verizon Moto X (not rooted, 4.4.2).
Oddly, pairing is not the issue. The phone pairs with my Pebble and my LG HBS-700 bluetooth headphones just fine. But the media controls on both are super spotty. I'll start an app to play music or podcasts (MediaMonkey, Google Music, Pocket Casts, etc.) Typically I do this manually, start a track, then put the phone in my pocket and go about my business.
At first, the skip/pause/play controls on the headset and my watch work just fine, but after a few minutes, they often fail to respond. Sometimes pressing skip will seem to do nothing, then skip several seconds later. But most often, all controls fail to have any effect. To fix it I have to unlock the phone and perform the action manually. Usually this also "wakes up" the bluetooth controls, and they'll work again for a bit.
Sometimes, with the screen unlocked, when the skip fails it produces the message "No songs in now playing list." Is that a Google Music message? Could Google Music be trying to take control as the "active" media player when I'm listening to another app? That can't be the whole story because I've had the same problems with Google Music itself as well. I actually don't know how Android determines what the "active" media player app is at a given time.
ANY advice or links would be helpful. Thanks!
I have 2 links, persist+ & Google search workaround, in my signature.
They may help.
Thanks for the links! I don't think I found anything related to my problem, though. Persist+ looks cool, but my problems aren't volume related. Know of any app that monitors the active media player that external bluetooth controls should be controlling?
Don't have a Pebble, but controls on my LG HBS-730 have always been reliable. What happens if you connect only to the headphones?
Just tried it with the Pebble disconnected and I have the same issue. I did notice, though, that the volume controls on the headset continue to work, even when the play/pause/skip buttons stop working. Sometimes messing with the volume makes the pause button work again. Guess I should test with just the watch and no headset now to see if it's just a headset issue.
If this is some kind of conflict between Pebble and the LG, it is conceivable that whatever it is may still be on your phone. Might want to unpair both of them, wipe your phone's cache, and then just pair the LG, connect, and re-test.
Thanks, will do. When you say wipe the cache, do you just mean forget all the bluetooth connections, or is there something more specific I should do?

No luck, unfortunately. I cleared the cache per those instructions, then just paired the headset. It seemed to be working better at first, but eventually I saw problems with the play/pause/skip buttons not being recognized, or taking upwards of 10 seconds to be recognized. At one point I pressed the play/pause button to pause a podcast in Pocket Casts, and instead it started a track in Google Music seemingly at random.
Solutions Etcetera, you've never seen anything like this with your LGs?

No... never. Not with my Kinivo BTC450 set up in my truck either (which has identical controls, sans volume).
While I primarily use Pocketcasts, no trouble with the occasional use of Play Music either.
I forget, did it always behave this way? If not, maybe a full reset is in order.
Blarg. Okay I'll give it a shot. This is the first time I've had to do a full reset on an android phone (had an iphone for a long time), are there any best practices you guys could point me too? I'm assuming I don't want to back everything up with Titanium because I may also back up the bug.

Yup. Turn off Automatic Restore in Backup and reset. Make sure photos, and anything that is on the phone and not elsewhere, is copied to your computer. If you want to backup call logs and SMS, there are apps on Play to do it. Don't know what to tell you re game levels and scores (never a priority for me). Some apps with complicated settings (Tasker, Aquamail, etc.) have the ability to export/back up settings for an easy restore. Copy those files to your PC as well.
Reset and set up as new. Hope it clears up your issue.
Took a while to confirm, but I think the issue is fixed! Resetting helped that and also seems to have improved performance overall. Thanks for the help!

Youtube Music suddenly runs without any interaction

Hello everybody,
First of all : Happy new year !
I own a Pixel 4 XL running a stock ROM with the bootloader still locked (I actually don't flash my phones anymore since I'm a team Pixel member haha). I use Android Auto very often because of my job.
Here is my problem : Since the december update (I guess) when I disconnect my phone from my car (using the cable & bluetooth), and put my phone in my pocket, the song from the last music suddenly runs very loud (max volume) even if I manually stop the music player beforehand. I tried a lot of things to stop this problem that seems very random : I cleared the YT Music cache, I disabled motion sense gestures, I even did a factory reset but the problem is still here.
I have to think every time I get out of my car to low the volume before this bug comes out..
Have you encountered that problem ? Do you guys have any idea that could help me ?
Thanks in advance !
Nobody can help me ?
I don't know, what does team Pixel say?
I don't think there is a solution and you aren't alone. I don't use YT for audio, but all music apps have the same pain in the ass behavior because they don't close automatically and most often you have to use "recents" to kill them off. This is the same with Spotify and Pandora. I find myself having to close AA itself sometimes because it stays open long after I've left the car. Sometimes 20 minutes later I look down and notice it is still running. If it can start up automatically when BT connects, or even when "hearing" driving noises like the engine, the reverse should be true. You turn the car off, unplug, exit the vehicle WHY does it continue running? Not one of the top 3 music apps will kill itself.
Thanks for answering !
I actually didn't know anyone else would have the same problem so this is reassuring me hah
Yes that is so annoying having your phone waking up with music with the volume toaximum whereas 10 minutes ago you thought you did everything to shut it up
I think I've had this happen literally once and I do use YouTube Music. Have never had it replicated. Is it still happening with the happened with the January update?

Unfortunately, yes it still happens despite the last update. The only thing that seems help me avoiding the problem is when I manually stop the music in my car before unplugging the phone. Then, for safety I put the media volume to the minimum so if the music starts again in my pocket, I won't hear it.

Interesting, so you're connected via Bluetooth to your car, turn off the ignition, and it'll still be playing? At that point, that's when my YouTube Music pauses.

Actually no. I plug my P4XL to my car through USB then it connects via Bluetooth and Android Auto runs on my car's screen. Everything work fine. When I'm arrived, I unplug my phone, turn of the ignition and the sound normally stops and YTM pauses. But something like 10 minutes later, when I'm far from the car, the last song I was playing in the car restart through the phone with absolutely no interaction on it.

I have a similar problem. I drive a lot throughout the day and Stream SiriusXM on my Phone through the BT on my work van. Very often, I get out and within an unspecified period of time, Sirius will start playing, full volume for no reason. It's as annoying as the Google Assistant suddenly responding to something I said without me using the OK Google prompt.
The fix is to close Sirius and swipe away the player controls in the status bar dropdown

Thanks for your feedback ! I don't have the Google Assistant problem you have but the exact same problem for the media. So it's not due to YT Music or Sirius. It's an overall media problem.
Unfortunately, I can't close the app because when I unplug the phone, YouTube Music isn't even open. And swiping right the player controls doesn't seem to work.
The only thing that seems to work is to stop the stream through Android Auto before turning off the engine and unplugging. But I have to think every time I leave my car

I haven't tried stopping it before I turn off the van, but that's an idea. I think when I turn off the engine, it pauses the stream on the device, sure, but what causes it to just start playing again??
TBH, that and the random dead spots around the edges of my phone since Android 11, I'm getting a little aggravated.

I absolutely don't know what causes it to start the music again. But closing it before turning off the engine and then force closing the streaming app does help. That way, the phone has nothing to turn back on
Regarding the dead spots since the update I don't have this problem... Yet. But yeah, Android 11 is one of the worst major update the past few years. Hope they will fix these problems soon.
