Greenify Play services with root - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I'm am thinking about rooting and use greenify in order to get more battery life.
As for others I play services and Google app are my main battery consumer.
So I was thinking maybe greenifying some services with root would help.
Has somebody tried it already and would share his / her experience? Is it worth rooting?
Cheers

Actually u can root if you want to customize and check out new roms... But i have seen many people including myself going back to stock since the Moto is not available is custom roms... And i have read somewhere that its not good to greenify play services.. U will encounter problems....
The best way is root and use stock rom.. And greenify other apps causing battery drain and keep ur Cpu running low...

[Q] free memory and optimizations

Hello,
after removing alot of bloatware from the phone (LG stuff and killing some more apps & widgets)
i get roughly 163M free (after whatsapp, email, adv. task killer )
i am running on stock ROM
what are the numbers that you are getting?
i saw several people with 230M and 200 as well.
how can i get more available memory besides freeze and un-install?
It really doesn't matter, if you need more than you have free, Android will free some up for you.
yeh but i want to understand how it actually works and to remove all the rest of the bloatware from the phone.
since i still think that there are alot of things that arent required for standard operation.
Linux based OS like Android usually keep a lot of apps in memory, and if necessary free the memory for other apps, so it 's not the real problem I think.
The real issue is that some apps runs in background and use radio connection to connect to servers, to verify updates etc, and that drains battery and take CPU time. For example if you have stock firmware, and have some apps installed by your phone provider, or so.
Alternative MODS are free from those bloatwares, and even in stock ROMS if you are rooted you can use Root App Remover to uninstall stock apps that are not necessary.
You can for example try some apps like GO Launcher or Titanium Back UP to freeze the desired apps and prevent them to run in background. Make some tests o see if there is a real difference, I think most of the time it's mainly a psychological issue ;-)
Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation i have removed most of the stock apps and installed adv task manager to kill the rest but still how come people here on the forums got 230mb memory when i can only reach 180-160?

Because they use other hacks aswell ( disabling the OTA feature, using some ram reserved for the GPU as memory, etc)

Can you recommend some apps or give some links?

but be careful with LG Home or LG Launcher... if you don't have a replacement launcher, you will screw up your rom...
Thanks a lot i was looking for that quite hard but i probably missed it

I've noticed this during general use on my phone. Normally when using Twitter or Facebook.
Quite often I will go to use the app and find i've been logged out. I'm guessing the OS killed the app to free up memory for something else.
What I get annoyed with is some apps that Autostart on Bootup when there's no obvious reason why they would need to. (BBC iPlayer etc) This Just takes up memory when it doesn't need to
I've never been logged out of Twitter and/or Facebook... closing the app wouldn't log you out anyway, that's something else altogether.
I got the same issue with skype although its not supposed to logout it does even though he runs in the background
Strange right ?

Wakelocks

I dunno what app is doing it. Though Facebook and Google services are the top two drainers.
Annoying.. Gsam doesn't help me figure out which app I need to delete.

why the hell would he do that? factory reset would be an absolute last resort.... and i have no idea why the hell you think installing apex would help him?
OP do you have google now enabled?
first thing i would do is disable data and disconnect wifi - make sure it is an app trying to fetch data that is causing the problem, if that turns out to be the case then simply stop all apps from syncing automatically and reenable a few at a time until you capture the problem one.
check out whether your GPS is being used too - google now would use your location and fetch data a lot, my money is on it.

fair enough... but you can be 99.99% sure that it is something you have installed that is causing it.

Uninstalled all the downloaded apps other than facebook and twitter, pretty sure it has something to do with the facebook app.

I don't think so, we just have to take care with the app we install, mainly the outside Google Play.
Basacly every app that does not require root will not kill your device
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
If you are not rooted, no need at all. An app won't have SuperUser permissions to run so it won't cause any real damage apart from eating RAM or sending random text messages.
If you are rooted, just install SuperSU or SuperUser. If a fishy looking app asks for Root Access, Deny It. You'll be good.
Its not really necessary.. just be sure of what apps you are downloading and installing.. Most antivirus apps tend to drain a lot of battery too - so its better to not install any antivirus on your phone...
Ty guys! Anyway they are supposed to eat RAM
Disable root, don't put apk's on system and use privacy guard and you are done

Help stopping apps from running

So Im trying to save as much battery as possible by freezing apps and such. I downloaded ELIXER2 and seen that's AMAZON, FACEBOOK, 4SHARED, and a few other apps are running in the background. I'm wondering if there's a way to stop them from auto starting and such. I heard u can use Elixer2 to do this but not sure how. Anyone?

There is an app called greenify but you need root. It works well though:

Battery tracking app, no root

Is there any battery tracking /wakelock detector apps that don't require root?
I need to find out why my Android System has been killing my battery every single day. So frustrating

Im not sure about a wake detector app without root. But you could check out Gsam battery monitor for battery monitoring or even watchdog task manager for rogue apps. The latter is old and hasn't been updated in while, but it still works.
The gsam does show me the Android System is whats killing it but it only shows a list of apps inlcuded in there. So i m unable to see which one specifically thats killing my battery

Have you tried using Greenify to hibernate most downloaded apps? Tends to help alot with random wakelocks/battery life. You could also give cpu spy a try to see which apps are doing what.
Will try. Thanks
