Which models have unlocked bootloaders? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to determine which models have the unlocked bootloader. I've heard that AT&T phones do not, but what about the Pure edition on Motorolas website?
This wasn't covered in the Q&A and to me this seemed like an important bit of information so that I may know what can be rooted.
I would also prefer model numbers so I know specifically what to buy and so that I may look into which frequency bands each models use after knowing which can be unlocked.
AFAIK I need the following bands for Cricket Wireless (or other AT&T plans)
3G: 850/1900MHz (bands 2, 5)
4G: 700/1700MHz (bands 4, 17), but may also be starting to utilize 1900MHz (band 2).

Pure Edition is the only one that is factory unlockable from Motorola. It is considered a developer device, meaning the bootloader can be unlocked/relocked without voiding the warranty. Pure Edition model number is xt1095.

It looks like that model may work with AT&T and their partners in the U.S.
Motorola Moto X (2014) XT1095
(Pure Edition, for T-Mobile)
Differences:
UMTS:
850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz
FDD LTE:
700 (band 17), 850 (band 5), 1700/2100 (band 4), 1800 (band 3), 1900 (band 2) MHz

I'm using it on AT&T with no issues. Some say they have 4G issues because of the bands AT&T uses, but I have great reception. It comes carrier unlocked, even though it is "for T-Mobile."

My current phone is using band 17, same as when I was 10 states across country as well. Don't think reception will be an issue, hopefully.

[Q] Does Pure Edition support Fido/Rogers 3G/LTE bands?

I'm thinking of getting the pure in the US and using it up in Canada. Wondering if it'll work. I've heard mixed things about the LTE bands and some saying that 3G won't work at all.
Much obliged.

It will work perfect, 100%
Telus sells the XT1097, your looking at the XT1095 out the US just don't pick the AT&T model as it has a locked boot loader that seems cant be unlocked at all..... The Telus model, supposed to have the quickest updates... well thats a lie.... there is no update as of today... and no indication of when either...
I was able to buy a XT1095. I still haven't received it but now all I can think about is "What if I need to use the warranty for some reason?". Did anyone in Canada have to go through that?

I asked a similar question (but for Telus) on howard forums. This is the response i received o0vL
"Moto X - Pure Edition (GSM Unlocked with T-Mo SIM - XT1095):
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1700 (AWS), 1900, 2100 MHz)
4G LTE (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17)
Telus Moto X Specs
4G LTE: (Bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7,17, 29)
4G (HSPA): 2100MHz (Band I) / 1900MHz (Band II) / 1700MHz (Band IV) / 850MHz (Band V) / 900MHz (Band VIII)
Seems like the Pure Edition is missing band 29, where its available on the Telus version. Not sure if it will affect the LTE connection"

On another thread on this site, someone mentioned that the hardware is the exact same on the canadian model as it is on the pure edition model, the only difference is the firmware. So it seems to me that a radio flash might be required in order to receive the proper bands. I'd love confirmation on this, as I plan on using motomaker in the US to build my phone.

You can't actually change the modem files, you must you the original meant for the phone. The XT1095 supports all of the 2G,3G and 4G bands that Rogers/Bell/Telus/Fido/Virgin/Koodo/Wind/Mobilicity use in Canada. You don't need to do anything but insert your nano sim and possibly program the APN to get network data.

thanks for the reply Steve, so the lack of band 29 shouldn't be an issue? LTE speeds should be achievable?

[Q] Moto X 2014 - Pure (net10(verizon)) & Lollipop

Well... according to Fedex tracking information, My Moto X 2014 is waiting for me when I get back home
So, since I order it directly from Motorola website (aka pure) I can go ahead and update it all the way to Android Lollipop? and not worry about bootloader being update and such?
*** UPDATE ***
I originally wanted to get pure so that I dont have to rely on Verizon to get updates and plus unlock bootloader so I can root my device, unfortunately I ordered Verizon (locked) model and even though it can also be used on _ANY_ providers its still locked in bootloader and updates going have to go through Verizon approval before I'll get it. So, after talking to Motorola they said if I'll get net10 I'll be able to use it on Verizon and still be able to unlock bootloader and all that good stuff.
Did anyone tried net10 on Verizon??
Well, right off the bat if it's Pure it's not Verizon, if it's Verizon it's not Pure. but either way once you connect the update will come through

I'm confused, I purchased Moto X from Motorola (pure) and phone is for Verizon.
Phone already asked me to update to lollipop, but before I take update I'd like to make sure I'll be able to root it later.

Motorola manufactures several different versions of the 2014 Moto X. One of those versions is for the Verizon network. It doesn't matter if you buy it directly from Motorola or from a Verizon store, you're getting the same version of the phone, and it's not the "pure" version.

does it mean i cannot unlock bootloader and i have to wait for verizon's blessing on android updates?
No man. Didn't u research this at all before u bought it? The Pure version is only for ATT. VZW version is completely locked down for now. You will get the 5.0 update when u turn it on so if ur only worried about that then you'll be OK

Pure version is not "only for ATT" it is SIM unlocked and will work on any GSM network.
edit: To confuse matters even more, the Verizon edition is also SIM unlocked and will work on any GSM network, and will get data at least on HSPA+ and maybe LTE depending on the carrier's frequencies. The major difference is that the Verizon edition has a locked bootloader and comes preinstalled with Verizon bloatware.
So, if I go net10 it's pure but also with CDMA radio.

Not necessarily. To get the Pure Edition you must buy the "Pure Edition". Any carrier branding may yield your bootloader unlockable. US Cellular is BL unlockable, but I doubt you'd be able to get it to work on any other carrier.
If you bought using the Net10 option on motomaker then it is essentially a "pure edition" with a Net10 SIM but I don't know what that means for the bootloader and your warranty.
If you bought the Verizon edition then it is a Verizon edition and will have a Verizon logo and come with Verizon apps installed (and the bootloader will not be unlockable without voiding warranty)

I'm wondering how would net10 work on Verizon if it's missing some of bands?

[Q] URGENT - Compatibility of Moto X 2014 with O2 in the UK

Hi, guys!
I am flying to the States for work and I am thinking about getting a 64gb Moto X 2014 and I was wondering if it´s a good idea.
I am living in the UK and I´m an O2 user, and according to this website, O2 has only 800 band right here:
"O2 spent £550,000,000 to secure 2 x 10MHz of 800MHz spectrum, but didn’t come away with any 2.6GHz and has no 1.8GHz either."
Moto X, according to the website, is compatible only with this LTE networks:
"Moto X - Pure Edition (GSM Unlocked with T-Mo SIM - XT1095):
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1700 (AWS), 1900, 2100 MHz)
4G LTE (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17)
So, my question is... Will I be able to use this mobile here in the UK? Will I find issues with the calls, the 3g or the 4g? Any problem with the bands, at last?
I swear I have been reading this morning a lot of articles but I'm a NERD in telecommunications
I would really appreciate if you guys could give me a hand here because I´m departing quite soon
Thanks in advance!
As far as I can 4g will not work because the phone does not support O2 bands but 3g should work fine.

It is a physical limitation rather than a software one. So most likely, there is no way to change/fix it.
EDIT: It seems that 3's and EE's 4g have compatible bands so if you are willing to switch to one of them it might work.
3 supports band 3 (1800 Mhz) same with EE.
SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks
NOTE: haven't 3 proposed a buyout of O2?

Correct! I heard that 2 weeks ago and it's going to be great for O2 customers... 3 is now a HUGE company here in the UK.
It looks like I will end up getting it because it will work... And I don´t want to stay with O2 anyway
Thanks, guys!
Hey! Let´s go for the next level...
What about the Droid Turbo?
Bands
LTE Cat 4 (Bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 13)
CDMA/EVDO Rev A (850, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Carrier Aggregation (B4+13)
Any idea? I already decided to leave O2 and go to EE or 3, will I be able to use it with 1800 band?
Thanks again!
The Turbo have band 3, which should be compatible with 3 and EE, BUT I think it is carrier locked to Verizon and I am not sure if you can unlock it or not.

[Q] Will a Hong Kong Data Sim work?

My mom has a Droid Turbo, and I still have my Droid Maxx. We are wondering if the Hong Kong data sims will be plug and play (since it's sim unlocked from the factory), I really have no way of testing before we go to HK. My other option is to buy 3 Moto G's as backups in case they don't work, since they're on sale.
Planning to grab a sim from three.com.hk
Specific APN settings would help, maybe the techs at the shop can help us too.
Never been in Hong Kong question is are the HK carriers GSM? if yes then you won't have any issues (I don't have turbo but used many verizon phones in europe)
hope that helps!
check the frecuencies of the phone and the frecuencies by the carrier you want to use on china, if they match you can use it.

If it is a prepaid SIM and preloaded with funds and a GSM carrier with bands compatible with the DT then it will work but as you noted, you are going to have to know the APNs too if you want to use data. The DT is GSM SIM unlocked out of the box. The frequencies are here:
https://www.motorola.com/us/smartphones/droid-turbo/droid-turbo-pdp.html
Bands
LTE Cat 4 (Bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 13)
CDMA/EVDO Rev A (850, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Carrier Aggregation (B4+13)
So as you can see, the GSM bands are 850, 900, 1800 and 1900. Then for 3G data the bands are 850, 900, 1900, 2100 and for LTE the bands are 2, 3, 4, 7, 13.

That is entirely dependent on the carrier. None of us know what carrier you are planning on using.
I'm using turbo in hong kong and no problem with all carrier here. Lte can be functioned normally on turbo.
Sometimes it might get no signal for a few seconds because the turbo jump to search for cdma signal.

[Q] Moto Maxx(XT1225) UMTS/HSPA bands

Semseddin,
Thanks for checking this, I have translated the WCMDA bands to their respective frequencies for easy reading if anyone else is curious.
Code:
Bands
GSM 800, 850, 900, 1800, 1900
UMTS/HSPA(WCDMA) 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
LTE(2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17)
This would indicate that WCDMA Band VIII (900mhz) is NOT supported. Can anyone else offer any input?
Thanks!
EDIT: Just wanted to add that this corresponds exactly with the specs on Motorola's Brazilian website.
My device is from Puerto Rico. If we had information from usa moto maxx xt1250 and moto maxx xt1225 from india, we could compare the band support for different regions.

There is NO difference in bands in the Moto Maxx/Moto Turbo XT1225. That's been proven over and over. It is the same model, with the SAME FCC ID. Only a different name because there is a carrier called "Maxx" in India, and Motorola didn't want any confusion this phone is affiliated with them.
Motorola for some strange reason did not list all the bands the XT1225 has enabled, when they released it in Latin America. I found the bands when scanning with modem software, and users in Canada confirmed what I found, actually using HSPA Band 4 and LTE band 5 with carriers in Canada.
When Motorola released the XT1225 in India -- renamed the Moto Turbo -- Motorola finally admitted the truth.
Again, ALL the XT1225 models have the same bands enabled -- a Moto Maxx XT1225 = Moto Turbo XT1225, as they all have the same FCC ID. I own two, I know.
Go by the official Moto Turbo XT1225 specs on the Motorola-India site -- they are complete for the XT1225. The "official" Moto Maxx specs on the various Latin American countries's sites (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Chile, Brazil) are incomplete.

Why did Motorola not list all the bands initially? Take your pick...
1) those bands are not important in Latin America
2) Motorola didn't want people doing what we are doing, importing the phones to other countries -- like the USA -- since AT&T nor T-mobile was selling phone.
I really don't know. But the bands are there in ALL the XT1225 Quarks.

I flashed both my Moto Maxx to Moto Turbo 5.0.2 -- including the radio/modem -- so that when I go to sell them I can point to the India Moto Turbo specs.
I don't want to have to argue with buyers that is does or doesn't have HSPA band 4 (important for T-mobile in USA) or LTE band 5 (important for AT&T in USA).
Since I "converted" them (flashed) to Moto Turbo, I can point to those specs.
But the Moto Maxx XT1225 DOES have those bands.
Your op post shows something interesting.... That Brazil Motorola site has been updated at some point to show LTE band 5. I wonder why? A few months ago, none of the official Motorola websites showing specs for the Moto Maxx (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Chile) showed LTE band 5. They only showed 2, 3, 4, 7, 17. But the FCC tests showed LTE band 5 enabled, and I also found it in modem scanning, and Canadian owners confirmed they are using LTE band 5 on the Moto Maxx.
Now Brazil Motorola just needs to admit to HSPA band 4.
LTE band 5 on XT12225

I know it's been confirmed over and over (initially even by the FCC) that the XT1225 has LTE band 5. Initially Motorola left it out of the official specs for the "international" Moto Maxx XT1225 released in Latin America countries, even though the FCC found it in tests. I think Motorola's original plan was to sell the XT1254 through Verizon and the XT1225 through AT&T, thus it has all the AT&T LTE bands... But then Verizon wanted to claim "exclusive" (which was a LIE) and the plans for AT&T fell apart. Since the Latin America carriers don't use LTE band 5, Motorola didn't bother to list it in the specs when first released (even though it was in the FCC report).
But LTE band 5 was always there and then when Motorola released the XT1225 as the "Moto Turbo" in India, they included all the LTE bands and all the HSPA bands (yes, Motorola left one of those out as well, one used by T-mobile, HSPA band IV).
Before then I found that "missing" LTE band and HSPA band using modem scanning software and users in Canada confirmed LTE band 5 on their carriers.
This last weekend I finally actually saw LTE band 5 being used on AT&T here in Georgia! I was travelling down the interstate between McDonough and Macon and turned on LTE Discovery. I glanced over and saw LTE band 5! For you Pokemon Go players, like finding a very rare specimen! When I looked again, then it said LTE band 2. I thought maybe I had imagined it! But there it is in the logs. ONE instance of LTE band band 5.
Looking at the last screenshot I took back in Februrary, it's not there. Now it is.
By the way, I am using the Puerto Rico radio. That shouldn't make any difference, but to my knowledge Motorola has only admitted LTE band 5 in Brazil and India. But it's there in all the XT1225. Canadian users who confirmed LTE band 5 were using Puerto Rico Moto Maxx. And presumably it was the Puerto Rico Moto Maxx the FCC tested back in 2014, since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory -- and they found LTE BAND 5.
