Hey guys, longtime reader. I was wondering if there was an app that i could DL that would give me the funtionality of the Hero's Mobile network sharing settings? I have searched far and wide and have not seemed to find a solution for me to easily tether my PC running Ubuntu 9.04 to my G1 running Cy's 4.1.11.
Sorry if this has been discussed elswhere, and as you can see ive been a member for a long time and have never needed any help, but i have been lookin for about a week now and have only been able to find these 2 sites about it: http://joshuaredstone.blogspot.com/2009/01/bluetooth-tethering-from-ubuntu-to.html and http://www.kryogenix.org/days/2009/...thout-jailbreaking-or-installing-applications
The second one is the one im inquiring about.
thanks
Please correct me if I'm misreading you, are you looking to tether? ie. use your cell phone to get ubuntu online?
If so I use aNetshare, first result in google. It has worked best for every rom I've ran, the older RCs, cupcake and now donut. I'm roaming 99% of the time so that may be why the other more popular ones give me trouble. idk...
For any of them to work you'll need root and su permissions. There is a paid app out there which claims to tether w/o root or su. I think through usb.
yah im slightly confused as to what exactly it is you are looking for as well...but the one im using is called PdaNet just google it and its one of the first choices.
its free.
it claims it works without root, i wouldnt know cuz im rooted =] but you can try!
it works via usb so it charges the phone while you're surfin =]
EDIT....heres the link. http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php
PS. my bad...didnt realize you were already running cyan =]

sorry if i wasnt clear before but i have Ubuntu and want to know how to tether my G1 through bluetooth using Ubuntu....i cant get netshare to work through Ubuntu. how did you get it to work?
bluetooth, you got me there... sry
Ya, sry no idea how to tether via bluetooth. I really only use wifi. Dunno why(maybe because of high data traffic) but my phone would constantly die while tethered and charging via usb.
Other than getting ubuntu to see&install my wireless card(nothing to do with my phone) I don't remember having any problems getting it to see or connect to my phone.
Or am I still confused and what you're really trying to do is use the internet you already have working on ubuntu to get you phone online?
for whatever reason my Ubuntu 9.04 does not automatically read my phone (Tmobile G1) as a modem through the usb. whenever i configure the steps (http://technologyheaven.com/2009/08/27/phoneasmodem/) to get it to read my phone it still says not connected even though it IS connected. I know the usb ports work cause i can get it to mass storage...just not modem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thx!
it's been a long while since I used USB tethering (anyone remember tetherbot & socks proxies). You may need to have the android sdk installed or atleast know how to communicate with your device via console. Connecting as a mass storage device and as a modem are two different things, so one may work great while the other still needs more setup.
Hopefully someone else with more experience can chime in.. please.. anyone...
I don't know a ton about cyan's roms but I'm assuming they come rooted by default. Is there a reason you don't want to use the wifi method for the time being?
edit: fwiw, you can use the wifi method while charging via usb. But, with heavy traffic(downloading huge files consecutively) the usb may not be able to keep up with the battery usage.. especially if on a 3g network. Using the stock charger & wifi on 3g the battery actually gets a little charge(power supply is ~500mA on usb, ~1A on charger). Either way, usb or wifi, usb or charger, turn off your screen for best results.
Im surprised no one mentioned Wireless tether for root users:http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
supports both wifi and bluetooth.
@B3astofthe3ast, cool I didn't know that(no bt on my laptop, ya it's kinda old heh). For whatever reason on several different roms I get terrible data when using that app, it might be because I'm 100% roaming with no 3g ever. Tethers to pc fine just 9/10 doesn't seem to be able download stuff.
thx, but i have that (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/). anyway, im thinking its got something to do with my comp and not the phone itself, seeing as i can get on internet with windows just fine. Im just trying to move away from windows and to Ubuntu.
p.s. i dont have a wireless card in my self built computer, thats why i dont use wifi!
HI there, I have the dreaded 'unable to scan networks' wifi problem- it started after I set up a mobile AP (I didn't turn the AP service off after I'd finished with it- I wonder if that's what caused it?)...
Anyway, I've since learned via this board that I can fix my wifi by 2 methods: 1) performing a reset (would rather not) and 2) editing a line somewhere, root access is required.
I do have a third option- waiting until the 2.2 OTA update comes through, which I understand will require (and perform) a reset anyway.
However, I'm sick of waiting for 2.2.
What I'd like to know is: If I root my phone & fix my Wifi, will I still receive the OTA update?
Anybody?
TIA.
the 2.2 froyo is not OTA
it is OTK (over the kies)
just turn off your phone, then turn it back on, that should reset your WiFi stuck i/o
some times the GPS does that too, just turn off the phone, turn it back on and they work right away.
in contrast to the HTC Windows Mobile phones, the SGS is much much much better, i barely have to do any restart of the phone with Android
with Windows Mobile it was at least 10 reboot a day
Restart doesn't fix it... Tried removing battery, etc. etc.
The 'unable to scan networks' problem is a known issue- at least to this board, If not to samsung.

Im in the same boat as you mate with my Samsung galaxy s, i have tried turning it on and off with alternate battery in and out methods, my wi-fi just wont work now, it turns on, comes up saying "Unable to scan networks" and turns the wifi off.
I have read on many posts about the issue and the best fix appears to be here:
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8062313
*Sorry its not linked, this is my first post so i assume it wont let me post links until im roughly around the 25th post mark.
The issue i find with using this method is that in order to browse the phone at a root level to get to that file, you need to pay for the App in the android market to do it.
I have rooted my phone already and already applied the lag fix (boy did that change things), but im more contemplating doing the upgrade to 2.2 than buying the app just to fix a wifi issue. Im hoping this gets fixed in 2.2, or at least a more easier solution / fix.
My question is, if i did buy the app to browse the phones file system and i fix the wifi, does it fix it permanently or just until it happens again and i will have to follow the same process again... ?
did you both turn off Bluetooth when using WiFi?
you can't use BT when using WiFi
I've never had to turn off bluetooth to use wifi before...
However: PROBLEM IS NOW FIXED!!
Here's how I did it:
First, bluetooth was off.
Tried to upload a video shot on the phone to youtube. Got message along the lines of 'will only upload video over wifi'
Next message pops up: 'waiting for wifi'
THEN message box saying' signal strength excellent' & asking for my wifi password!
I've been without wifi for 2 weeks, this is brilliant. Give it a go, try uploading a video to youtube.
I reckon it overwrites the bad line, but who knows. Maybe its a bluetooth thing. I don't care, it worked for me.
Spread the news!

how would I go about updating, when 2.2 is official, without kies or rooting? I've lost patience with kies!
This was mentioned on another topic already but here it is again:
Heimdall, Odin, Rom Manager Clockwork just to name a few, there are many other ways to go about this even without Kies

cool, cheers! I think I will try Odin!
Hello all,
I need some help. So a family member of mine was recently handed a Samsung Galaxy S Advance to use and it was my intention to see if it were possible to unlock the phone (from Orange UK) allowing her to use her own network on the Samsung. Now I've rooted android tablets a good few times and it's been a breeze but this phone as proven to be a nightmare all day. Basically I decided to use Odin3 to give the phone a clean standard firmware for me to start with (2.3.6) and Odin went fine, in the end it informed me that it had past and I thought everything was okay. But now the device won't start up at all or charge, the only thing that appears to get a response out of it is if I connect the USB cable, disconnect the battery then my PC will inform me of a connection noise and then it suddenly disconnected seconds later. Have I done something wrong here?
Unfortuantly I can't access recovery or download without the screen even turning on. I'd greatly appreciate some help. Thanks.
Hi,
sorry to say but your device is fully bricked.
What you hear when connecting it to your computer is the IROM software or the device probing to see if there is the correct server to connect to.
You need the libusb drivers correctly setup for you computer to recognize the device in this mode, but that is not enough, you need the correct software to talk to the device too.
Some times ago, I have managed to setup such a server (I got the software sources from someone here who gave it to the community) and talk to the device in this mode but never had enough time to experiment with it to send a minimal bootloader (documentation provided with the software is very minimal and somehow "cryptic").
Nobody here ever tried to build up on my searches, having no more time to play with this + this phone starting to be really outdated, I gave up.
Regards
I have an Odyssey that currently has 57644 minutes before I can try another code combination. I would like to flash a new ROM on to it that would allow interop unlocking and let me get all the stuff I want off of it. Granted, that isn't a long time to wait to try again, but that is the tail end of a couple years of waiting. I wrote some possible codes down near to the time it got locked, but that is about all I have to go on and I'm not optimistic.
So, I connected the phone to my Windows 10 laptop and it was recognized (eventually.... had to do several soft resets of the phone). In Explorer, however, there was just an empty root directory showing up. I tried MBN_Creator but it also could not see a valid phone to flash to.
In Device Manager, I saw that only a generic (from 2006) USB/phone driver was installed. I have not been able to find a driver (Samsung or otherwise) that will install on Windows 10. I have tried a few on a WIndows 8 Pro system I have, but they also have not worked at showing any kind of file system on the phone. Is there something in the Windows Phone SDK that could be used?
I saw several references to being sure to use the original Samsung cable. I can't find that, but I tried one I did have along with borrowing a newer Samsung. The cable I have shows several folders on the borrowed Samsung (as does the cable my friend's using ... also not a Samsung cable), but neither cable works with the Odyssey.
I've tried soft resetting and power-cycling several times, but no dice.
I'm out of ideas, and would appreciate any insight you can give me.
I stumbled across a 'fix' for the huge number of minutes which was to pull the SIM and reseat it. So, I gave that a try and it came back on with 1.2 million minutes. . not the result I was hoping for.
I repeated the reseat and it was back to the 57k and change.
On the off-chance that the directories would show up, I checked and still nothing.
Once, I got the confirmation pop-up on my laptop for access to photos on the phone, but that had be finished on the phone. It seems weird that I wouldn't have been prompted for that last night, or the other times I tried this morning.
Now I'm thinking what I saw last night with my friend's phone was solely due to one being locked and the other unlocked (so, user error and ignorance). I thought I remembered seeing things when locked and connected to my old computer. I guess I must have allowed access.
From poring over the internet, it looks like what I want to do isn't possible and I'll just have to wait it out and hopefully guess right. If I'm wrong about having to wait, I'd appreciate being corrected.
Hi!
Was checking my stash of old devices and was pleasantly surprised that the S4 Active ATT device was still working. Having some trouble with the play store though, it stops working 10 seconds after I launch the app so cant install new stuff on it.
So decided to root the device in order to upgrade android. So far I have tried towelroot and kingroot but both of them fail and give a network connection error even though the phone is connected to wifi.
Would appreciate it if I could get some help with this. Have attached the about info of my device here, kindly let me know if more information is needed.
Update: Used this resource to install Lollipop on the device, was a breeze to do and the device is very useable now. Can finally give the phone to my cousin's kid so she will stop pestering her parents for their phones. Rooting was not required which is fine as the goal was to make a device that a 6-year-old can use without buying something new.
