in simple no not at this time until the bootloader is unlocked and custom recovery is possible KFHD owners only have root and sideloading
to work with...but i have hope that someone somewhere is smarter then amazon and will crack the bootloader...
No not atm, no application like setcpu works, we need to get it unlocked as the user stated above. Gonna be awhile.

If you want a full fledged android device, I wouldn't bank on the KFHD anytime soon. The bootloader is locked up tight.

None of the roms I've seen for the N7 have that carousel feature. Most people that want to throw a rom on a Kindle tend to dislike that interface. You can try searching but I find it unlikely.

I have my KFHD rooted and have ADW EX launcher installed and set as my default desktop. I hit the home button and I have a "stock" Android tablet (complete with Play Store and any app from there I want - although a very few won't work). I run the Amazon "launcher" (I have it as a shortcut in the ADW dock) and I have the KFHD desktop carousel.
So, with my setup, I have the best of both in one - a stock Android 4.x tablet (well, 98%) and the KFHD tablet. :victory: You won't get that with the Nexus.
You don't get the Amazon Prime Video (and maybe any Amazon video?) with the Nexus. I had both and kept the KFHD over the Nexus for the Amazon goodies!
Hope that helps your decision.

can you post more information on how you did that? I have the root guide, but i have no info on the ADW launcher.
Also, is there a way to expand the kindle fire memory via usb cable or any other means?
I had a rooted KFHD and it felt like nothing more than a gimped android device. You won't have Google now, no voice commands (unless Amazon implements it), talk isn't fully functional, and so forth. These will all be dependant on a custom ROM.
I am not a big media consumer so the Amazon ecosystem is not what I want. I enjoy the openness of the nexus and all the new jellybean and beyond updates from Google. Amazon will just be Amazon.
Don't get me wrong, the KFHD is not a bad device at all, you just need to like their ecosystem. It's even better if you have Amazon prime to help you consume media for "free".
It comes down to your needs and wants but again, if you're just looking for KFHD hardware and pure android software, it's not the best choice right now until the bootloader gets unlocked. That was the position I was in and I did not regret returning the KFHD for the N7. I felt nothing but trapped when using the KFHD. I'm very happy with the N7.
The 16 GB N7 is now $199 on par with the KFHD and you can get a 32 GB for $249.

ADW EX is a paid app available on Google Play, but other free launchers work as well (there is a thread here somewhere). You just have to put the apk in system/app folder (again you have to be rooted to do this) using a file manager with root access (I use Root Browser Lite - it's free). But don't install it, just move it there. Reboot and when you hit the home key, the dialog should pop up to ask you which launcher you want to use. Click the launcher you want (ADW in this case) and select if you want to use it always (I did) or just once (in which case you'll be asked every time you click the home button).
Then like I said, I put the original launcher (called Launcher oddly enough ) in the dock so I could access the Amazon stuff. Alternatively, you could put it on the desktop, or just launch it from the app drawer.
As far as memory, I'm not sure what you mean...

I'm kind of the opposite as I don't use any of the voice commands, etc you mention, but do use the Amazon features - especially the Prime Video (can't beat it for $80/year along with the free shipping deal!).
I had the Nexus 7, but felt that it didn't really offer anything more than my Galaxy Note except for a bigger screen of course! I'm rooted with an AoKP ROM, so it's stock with extra goodies. As I mentioned Prime Video made the decision easy for me (and I travel so it's nice to have that option when the hotel's entertainment choices suk!)
That's the beauty of Android though - we have a choice!:victory:

I hear ya on that. The nexus 7 is my first JB device, as my Evo 3D is still stock and stuck on ICS so this is an improved experience.
Sounds like devs are getting somewhere with hijacking the KFHD. There is hope out there, but everything is still in early development. Something good to see though.

Hey guys, I'm trying Android again for about the 4th time (normally an iOS user), andI've grabbed myself the HTC One.
One thing i'm keen on finding is an equivalent for the iPhone's "Do Not Disturb" feature, where I can have the phone by my bedside at night, but it won't notify me of any Emails, texts, calls etc during certain hours (with the exception of phone numbers that I allow - ie favourites).
Could anybody point me in the right direction? There's lots to choose from, but does anybody have any experience on one that really stands out?
Both paid/free apps would be fine.
Many thanks.
Open the Play Store and search "Do not disturb." There are of ton of apps that will accomplish what you want.

I recently came from a iPhone 5 and "Quiet time premium" is a perfect replacement and offers a lot more than iOS "do not disturb" offered.

Never have I felt like such a google fan boy till I got this 7" tablet from amazon.
My SO purchased one during the black friday deal for her mom. It just showed up and I dont know what this thing is. I own a nexus 6 that I have been learning how to flash custom features too, so I understand that concept. But when I got this Fire 7" running I go to install chrome, and nothing? I am out of the loop here. I was told to do what ever it is I do to these smartthings before it leaves for no mans land Ketchikan AK.
I must admit, I am out of the loop with this device, never thought I'd be using one. Thought it would be more similar to lollipop than it is. What do I need to know? I'd like to be able to trouble shoot the device through a remote connection if there is ever a problem.
Running Fire OS 5.1.1.
Looking down at the lock screen... theres ads?

It is completely possible... Just download the Google Apps Zip from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/installing-google-framework-playstore-t3216122
Then, put the APKs on your fire tablet. Easiest way is to extract, then put on onedrive, then install onedrive on phone and download.
Next, make sure to install in THIS ORDER:
1.) Google Account manager
2.) Google Play Services
3.) Google Services Framework
4.) Google Play Store
There should be one duplicate APK in there. It doesn't matter which one you use, worst case, it will update itself. Hope this works for you like it did for me!

You can use the new, just posted supertool to do everything. Be aware that blocking OTA via the supertool may not currently work on 5.1.1, give them a little time & it will likely be fixed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/development/amazon-fire-5th-gen-supertool-root-t3272695/
Do not send off the Fire until OTA is blocked. Failure to block OTA will likely result in amazon undoing anything you've down to the Fire (& potentially locking out future mods) when the next OTA update appears.

Unfortunately, there is NO (zero, zip, nada) option at present to root a 5th gen Fire running FireOS 5.3.2.1 or above. Nor can you roll back to a rootable build of FireOS. However, you can install the Google Play store:

No root on 7th gen Fire. 5th gen devices running FireOS 5.3.2.0 or lower can be rooted. There is no rollback option for those on 5.3.2.1 and above (device will brick).

Same prob here , saw a couple of threads...it seems the safer approach is to not to attempt downgrading and simply install Google Play (I already did it and works fine - you can practically install anything you want). The problem is actually you have to live with all the junk Amazon puts on the Tablet...;(
Ads on the lockscreen can also easily be blocked..
Blocking of OTA updates does require you to be root, so unless a means to stop OTA from happening shows up, our tablets will continue updating themselves ad-eternum
Cheers,

Downgrade from 5.6.x -> 5.4 is safe and permits disabling (not uninstalling) Amazon 'bloat' if you know what you're doing. OTA updates can be blocked via VPN based firewall but that adds to the cpu/memory load on this already resource constrained device. In the end it's probably best to do as @ThyGizmo suggests for practical vs safety reasons. Take the device for what it is - a slow but serviceable Amazon ecosystem appliance (shopping portal) that can also be used as a generic Android tablet with some limitations.

I get an eerie feeling Pandora listens to me sometimes. It has access to the microphone mostly because it intertwines with Google Assistant but I swear sometimes I'll yell at Pandora for not playing the music I like or a song I haven't heard in forever and within a few minutes the song is played. I've been able to do a few times with somebody else in the room and they thought it was quite creepy to. So I guess in a sense you could say that was "spying". But just because an app has a permission to use a certain piece of hardware doesn't mean it always will use it.unfortunately without Root you can't install app Ops which would tell you if a permission was ever used for that specific application.

Let me start by saying this: I LOVE MY NEXUS 6. Really love it. There's nothing like it nowadays. I've been trying to find a 6 inches / 16:9 / no-notch / 3.5mm jack modern phone, but i'm out of luck. Manofacturers just don't build them anymore.
So I've been stuck with my Nexus 6 for more than I prolly should have...
The phone is becoming increasingly incompatible with more and more applications, not even the latest Netflix version is compatible with this model. So... i've been using al old Netflix version for quite some time.
To make things worse, I recently flashed a custom rom, PixelExperience. What I didn't know when I installed it, was that it doens't include the DMR-enabler (or whatever its name is) that Netflix/Amazon need in order to stream HD video. So, basically, I can't even stream netflix now. I'm using an ancient netflix version just to make it run...
My other big issue is NFC. The phone has NFC yes... But something is different about it. There's a NFC payment app in my country, and Nexus 6 is incompatible with it. I don't know why. The app works in other, newer phones, such as Motorola G6, but it doesn't work in my Nexus 6. I paid no attention to the "this app is not compatible with your device" message, because sometimes the app store says that and the app works anyway... so, I downloaded it and installed it manually, but it didn't work. So, Im lost here. Does this phone have an "old" NFC protocol or something?
I have the latest "working" android version, 8.1. I cannot install any of the PIE roms, because none of them have figured out how to make VoLTE work.
So what should i do? should i finally give up on my Nexus and buy a modern phone, even though i don't like them? Are you guys still using Nexus 6 nowadays?

Obviously people here are using their Nexus 6's. My wife is using a Pie rom and Netflix without any issues. I know you mentioned your issue with Pie roms so thats understandable. You mentioned the Moto G6 and thats pretty similar imo. If you want to move on from the Nexus 6 I wont hate you. My Nexus 6 still serves me well. I agree though with your dislike of more modern phones but there are plenty out there that arent like them.
As far as NFC is concerned I have never found a reason to use it so its the first thing I turn off. I know I dont have much to help with in your decision but if you want or need a newer phone, its really your choice. I support you either way. One thing that I usually consider before all else is the custom rom community. I dont care what phone it is, if the support and community isnt there then I'm not going to be happy with the phone. Good luck to you!
I retired my N6 late December. Now I use it as a dedicated MTB navigator and ride tracker.
My new phone is a OP 6T. I don't even notice the notch anymore, but I miss the width of the N6.
