I am switching my fiance's 2012 FireHD 7' to Android from FireOS, I am well versed in rooting, bootloader unlocking, flashing, ADB, etc. I just am unsure of what issues (if any) exist on 4.4 and 5.1... I'd much rather use 5.1 as long as there are no major issues or stability problems. I looked through the first few pages of this sub-forum and searched using google and XDA's built in search, and couldn't find the info I needed. Normally, I would flash and test myself, but as this is her tablet, which she uses often, I don't have access to it for enough time.
Thanks in advance!

I am N1 newbie but not Android newbie - have been using rooted Droid Incredible as my "main" phone for several months.
I just purchased officially unlocked N1 that is currently activated on prepaid T-Mobile account in USA and in future it will be used on my vacation in Europe.
Phone came with OS v. 2.2
I read a lot and things are sure different for N1 comparing to DInc. For DInc there was just one OS update and just one way to root it. For N1 its almost too much of a good thing for someone who hasn't followed it until now - 3 or 4 official OS updates and gazillion ways to root .
At this time I would like to root the phone (definitely, so that I can use third-party apps that require root access) and upgrade OS (possibly). I am not planning to use custom ROMs at this time but would like to try them in the future if rollback to stock ROM is possible.
As I already mentioned - my phone currently uses OS 2.2 and when I checked for an update via phone menu no updates were found. I was connected to internet at the time.
Questions:
1) From what I read some of the official ROMs between 2.2 and 2.3.4 (latest version) had problems. Are these versions even worth considering now that 2.3.4 is out?
2) Are there any known issues in 2.3.4 that are not present in 2.2?
3) What are advantages of going from 2.2 to 2.3.4?
4) Can I upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3.4 directly? All guides I found usually describe 2.2->2.2.1 etc - that is ROMs are updated consequently as they were released.
5) Should I a) update ROM to the latest and then root or b) first root 2.2 and then update ROM?
6) What are advantages of rooting with unlocking bootloader as opposed to rooting without unlocking bootloader?
Read the wiki. It is there to answer most of your ?s. Or use the search function.
If anything is still unclear ask about it and you will get help.

I read the WIKI and searched and it is still unclear.
1. 2.3.4 is the only version that currently has a fix for the recently found security hole that affects every version of Android other than 2.3.4. But this only affects non-https logins over an open wifi network, and people have to be scanning it.
2. I think the only major issue (depending on who you talk to) is the 2-3 second delay when you first answer a call before your microphone works. It has never really been a bother to me, and doesn't seem to affect everyone (maybe some just take longer to talk after they swipe, IDK).
3. There are a lot. Bugfixes, better UI, faster, support for video calling with GTalk (although obviously, only the back camera works, but you can still receive fine).
4. Almost, you can upgrade directly to 2.3.3. I don't think I have enough posts to add links, but a quick google search of "nexus one full gingerbread update" (without quotes) showed some results and the second one for me is how to manually update to Gingerbread. From there, you have to root the phone, because there are no hacks known to root 2.3.4 yet. This is where it gets a bit tricky because flashing a new update will kill your root. There are a number of guides on xda which can walk you through this part, because it is pretty detailed.
5. Kinda touched on with the above. Don't wait until you get to 2.3.4 until you root.
6. An unlocked bootloader makes things a lot easier. You can actually root your phone if it is running 2.3.4, because this allows you to load a custom recovery, which will give you access to the system partition of your phone. From there, you can add the files needed for root and remove the ones that will replace the recovery. The only benefit to keeping your bootloader unlocked is that it will keep its warranty through HTC, although HTC has been really good about replacing defective phones even if the bootloader is unlocked.
I just got my Nook HD+ a few days ago (running 2.04), and I've had a read through the boards but it's a bit confusing because there seem to be a couple of approaches to rooting, and I'm not sure which is the more reliable/recent one to follow.
I'd be grateful for any pointers on :
1) Running 2.04, which is the current best method to root, and is this now "permanent" or is still prone to factory reset (the "8 boot" cycle).
2) Once I root, is it then limited in terms of what I can install (eg. I saw in some of the earlier methods, that AdAway would trip the reset).
3) Once rooted, how do I install the Google Play Store/Market.
4) How compatible generally is the Nook with Google Play Store - can I download/run things like launchers, keyboards etc?
(I realise most of this info is already somewhere on the boards, but it seems a difficult to find where to start coming at it cold).
I can answer numbr3 now, from the look of it, there will be an all-in-one version of root+Gapps comin soon.
I prefer mineof course, but there are people that use verygreen also. Both should work the gapps.
most of the apps work w/o any problem, but you should be aware that anything that can modify /system (meaning required root) can screw up yoir system.
And no, there is currently no root mod that survive 8 bootloop.
Start here.
Hi,
My girlfriend won Kindle Fire HD, but it's kind of useless because we live in Poland and don't have US/UK credit card. I was thinking about rooting this device and installing "normal" JB Android. I don't realy know anything about rooting so I google it, also my friend show me this forum. Now I'm a little worry becaues I see that people have a lots of problems with rooted devices. Maybe you could answer some of my questions.
But first some informations about my device:
Kindle Fire HD 7'' 32GB
System Version: 7.2.2_user_2218220
Questions:
Is rooting safe (when I'm using tutorial step-by-step for my version of system and device)?
Is rooting legal?
Could rooted device automatic update system and "broke" because of root?
I found many tutorials about rooting, but only few about installing new system on device. Is it so complicated that only a few people do it or just it's similar for all version of rooted system?
If I root my device and install JB Android instead Amazon version of Android could I forget about rooting and use my device without fear like any other tablet with JB Android?
Appreciate your time.
1. It is safe as long as you are careful. Type something wrong and you can cause damage. I have followed the instructions and had no problems
2. Not going to comment
3. Possibly. Rooting allows the use to change the system and break things and also install things that become necessary for the system to run that are then broken with an update causing the system to be bricked. If you are careful, not a problem though. I have had at least one Amazon update and survived - just had to re-root.
4. The reason you have not found much is that people are only just starting to get to grips with it. Have a look at the front page of reverendkyle dot com - new member so I can't post links - for more details.
5. You will need to fix the bootloader first - see link in 4 - but once you have done that and loaded CM10 (JB) then it is all yours.
Hey all,
Just bought a HD 10 [5th gen] on clearance... Haven't connected it to wifi yet. According to the system update page it has Fire OS 5.0.0 (build date Saturday, July 25th 2015).
I have done a lot of googling and reading about the HD 10 on this site and it seems like most development for rooting etc. is done for the HD 7 and does not always work on the HD 10.
A recent post about using Fastboot to load a custom ROM sparked my interest as everything I've read so far just says you can only root the device (I was looking at stuff like bootjunky's SuperTool to root the device through USB cable), but that the bootloader is pretty airtight and resists custom ROM flashing. FireOS seems OK but I'd like to get hassle-free access to the Play Store & want to get rid of forced syncing with my Amazon account.
If anyone has suggested reading, tutorials, or tools that work with the HD 10 I would greatly appreciate it. Seems like there's not that many people out there with one.
Thanks!
/edit: IF flashing a custom rom is not possible (which it does not seem to be), if I root the device and install an adblocker, remove special offers, will these modifications still be in effect if the FireOS updates? I am assuming it forces an update after wifi connection?
Also--is there anyway to prevent forced data sync with Amazon cloud?

(No - we are not going to pollute this board with off topic posts)
Eghad, trying to read through these posts is difficult for a casual user. So many links on any single post they are hard to understand and follow.
I'm running a 5.1.1 rooted rom with a TWRP boot set-up that is starting to slow. I'm suspecting either the system data is filling up or may have gotten corrupted. Before I try re-flashing lollipop from my original ROM downloads, I was wondering if any newer [root] versions of android were available for the 910T that are stable and reliable. If anyone can point me to a good post, I can figure out what is needed to get it on the phone once I can narrow it down from all these postings about so many different things. Any help is appreciated!
