No problem at all, you can do it but it isn't necessary, you can flash root file, then cwm 5.0.2.6. FIX or you can flash cf-root kernel to get both in one shot
I recommend you do 3 wipes before flash a custom rom and after too to get the cleanest rom as posible (e.g. If you get bootlop, some custom Rom not need it, or you'll get FC, anyway YOU ALWAYS READ THE DEVELOPER INSTRUCCTION TO INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM)
Even if you can restore a backup, do 3 wipes before restoring and then restore it (to avoid boot troubles), you'll get all your last configuration (if then you make 3 wipes you lost all your configuration)
What to do before flashing rom
All u need to know is in this guide, thats all u need to do before flashing a rom, u dont need to partition sd card, do it if rom requires it
IN google type in"how to partition sd card to ext 4 with clockworkmod recovery" and click on the "androidarea51" link

Yeah! wipe dalvik cache is in advanced options
Doing a ext4 partition in your sdcard don't get a better performance if your sdcard's class isn't 6 or 10, I think doing a partition isn't a good thing if you use your phone as a normal usage.

Ext4 works fine in GB with a custom kernel and the correct script
If you want to use a ext4 partition you'll need to flash a INT2EXT script, with a custom kernel that support it with his init.d folder
You can flash cf root, battery extender, spacekernel, nims11 whatever you want for STOCK roms and you'll get a init.d folder, then flash init2ext script and done!

There is no need to do 3 wipes, its completely pointless, by wipe, they just mean factory reset via cwm, you should also wipe ext4 partition, and dalvik cache
If you are upgrading to a higher android version, then you do not need to wipe if you would like you keep all your apps. If you are going to a lower version, wipe the phone AFTER you have installed the rom, but if you dont wanna keep your apps after upgrading, wipe straight after installing the rom
i hope i made sense

3 wipes mean doing Wipe data/ factory reset, Wipe cache partition and Advanced> Wipe dalvik cache from CWM. Make sure to backup your data before you do it. I highly recommend you do this along with Mounts & Storage> Format /system & Format /sd-ext (if you have an ext partition on your SD Card) from CWM before you install another rom inorder to have a clean installation as possible. Hope I Helped

It is not at all pointless. Usually when you install a rom through CWM, all files inside this rom zip will be copied to your phone replacing the apps and other files there. But one thing that still remains there is the residual files from the previous rom. It is neither deleted or replaced after the flashing. Now certain system apps read from such residual files as long as its there (if its not there it will generate it again, this being the main reason why your first boot is always the longest). Since the residual files that it is accessing belongs to another rom, it can cause all kinds of error leading to lags and crashes and you might even end up getting a bootloop. Wiping before installing a rom is recommended to remove such residual files and prevent bootloops. The only exception is when flashing updates of the same rom assuming that the rom didn't undergo any change in the system level (just addition of new apps, files, etc). In such cases you don't have to wipe but if the update has made the rom undergo changes at system level like featuring a new kernel, etc, then you might have to wipe. So its always better to follows the installation instruction from the developer of the rom. Always make sure to backup your data before you do wipes, so that you can restore it when you install a new rom. Long story short, if you installing a rom different from your current rom or an upgrade of your current rom that involves changes at the system level, then perform wipe before the installation. Hope I Helped
Correct me if I m wrong...
If u flash clockworkmod(cwm) recovery over official stock(gb) firmware, then avoid formatting ur stock rom via cwm, it'll result in bootloop.
& it's not necessary to format data/cache/dalvik AFTER flashing a new rom. Some roms contain /data folder which means that u shouldn't format data after flashing.
For newbies: U can check what folders ur rom has by using "root explorer" app:sly:

You are absolutely right :good:
Hello,
I want to install White Neo's CM12.1 build and I already have the Latest CM11 snapshot in my Xperia T. I also want to resize the internal storage partition plus I want to format to FS, not ext4. However, I see that there are issues about read only partitions etc.
My thought is that I could install CM12.1 and then resize the partitions, because Neo's build prevents this problem.
Is this the correct way? or should I first resize the partitions? I want to make a clean install without backups etc..
Sounds correct.
The recovery included in my ROM already supports the required terminal commands, which makes reverting to stock unnecessary.
So, flash the ROM first, wipe data, resize your partitions, done :good:

I tried it yesterday and it worked. I first installed the recovery, then did the wipes and installed the rom. I booted up the rom and then rebooted in recovery. I followed the resize guide from step 8 until (including) step 14 although I think that i could do these steps from TWRP recovery. I then formated the partitions from TWRP following the procedure from Neo's ROM guide to change to FS. Because of the fact that I did not backup the rom, I had to reflash it, no problem though because it was fresh anyway.
Everything worked just fine.
Plus the way I see it, if you want a VEEERY clean install of the rom without backups, and resized partitions, you can install TWRP recovery, do the resizing and the formating and then you can easily install the rom :good:
There have been several threads about this in the past, but I couldn't find one which is actually up-to-date.
I have been flashing my N7000 for years now. I've been using several custom recovery menu's and ROMS and re-partitioned my internal storage as suggested here. I currently have the following installed on my phone:
NightOwl 20151030
PhilZ Touch 6.59.0
ClockworkMod v6.0.5.1 (as shown in PhilZ)
What I would like to do is perform a full, 100% wipe of my phone before re-flashing the same ROM I currently have installed, perhaps even update my recovery or whatnot in case my phone would benefit from it (suggestions are welcome).
The original instructions from the NightOwl thread mention the following when you want to manually update:
1. Copy Rom to your sdcard.
2. Boot into recovery
3. Flash the Rom (in current versions you dont need to reflash the gapps)
4. Wipe dalvik-cache and format the /cache partition (This will not delete your apps or data)
5. Reboot

As mentioned these steps will not remove your apps or data. I understand that a "factory reset" does. However, I still wonder if this (including a factory reset) will actually wipe my phone 100% clean before flashing a new ROM.
That would be the following options in recovery
Factory reset to wipe data and cache
Format system
And if you want to wipe internal memory then format sdcard0.
Be careful of where you have the zip file of rom to flash again.
In CWM, go to "Mounts and Storage" section and there you'll find options to wipe totally everything.
Hi guys,
Forgive me If this is a repetitive post, i promise i tried searching.
When i installed nougat i accidentally encrypted the phone, and it asks me for an encryption pin whenever I boot in. I don't mind this but flashing a new kernel always puts the phone into an infinite boot. I have to dirty flash the installed rom in order to restore the kernel without losing my data. Is there any way to decrypt the device so i can flash a custom kernel? Or have i got the entire thing wrong? I can't seem to find a decrypt option and i don't want to flash MIUI so to remove encryption. I don't mind losing all the data but flashing a new rom doesn't seem to remove the encryption.
Thank you so much for reading this.
Kernel bootloop because you wipe dalvik and chace, whan you install the kernel just flash it without wipe anything.
if you want to remove encryption just backup your things on pc.
than go to TWRP wipe section:
FORMAT DATA and write "yes".... now you wont have encryption problems never again (NOTE: this wipes your internal storage)
AFTER:
go back to TWRP wipe section:
ADVANCED WIPE
select:
DALVIK
CACHE
DATA
SYSTEM
INTERNAL STORAGE
swipe to confirm!!! NOW YOU HAVE A CLEAN AND FRESH PHONE
while you still are in twrp connect your phone to pc and put in to it, rom and gapps.... flash those.
FINISHED
I need new/fresh/clean install of 7.1.1 but I cant wipe sdcard. Something like factory reset but no wipe of sdcard. Is it possible? Aroma installer has offered such option - clean or dirt flash, but now I had only 711 factory image.
Any idea?
------ EDIT ------
maybe TWRP wipe data, cache and dalvik but not internal storage is a key?

Yes.. That's the key. "SD Card" is your internal storage. Don't wipe that.

Building on your answer, if I want to really start fresh with Android 7.1.1 does it hurt anything to wipe internal storage?
Follow the instructions here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70516840&postcount=2
You wouldn't need to flash the "radio" partition if you are just cleaning up an existing 7.1.1 install. This will give you a clean system, but maintain your /sdcard data.
