No one shouts "Give Update!" No one asks "unlock bootloader". No one asks root. maiko1 and jcase not interested in these issues ... So, I can use TURBO for cracking nuts? What about those who have upgraded to 5.1? I did this in order to make the method Unbrick to 5.1 and now I'm left the fool ... But I'm not the only one! I think people would pay for MOFO ROOT and UNLOCK.
I apologize for such a harsh tone, but very disappointing ... :crying:

AFAIK, maiko1 is working on trying to find an option to root 5.1. Root Junky was the one who implied that so I believe it.
But there are no guarantees that he can find one. Unfortunately, the bootloader on Motorola phones is getting tougher and tougher to hack. That is actually a good thing for your average user and especially for the business users.
We are a small minority of users - most Android users don't even know what a bootloader is and most want their phones to be secure and not easily hacked. We want the opposite but we are a niche market.
And jcase has repeatedly said he doesn't like people asking him for ETAs and bothering him to crack devices he isn't interested in. So there is no sense in bothering jcase about this - he is well aware of the fact that many of us would love for him to put some effort into hacking Motorola devices but he prefers to stick to the HTC devices.

I feel for you but in the future, please do not take OTAs unless you know there is a root method for the newer firmware or unless you are OK with doing without root.
I was the one who tested mofo on 5.0 for the first time so I knew I was taking a risk that if I upgraded to 5.0 it may not work. But I was OK with that because I was prepared to move on to the Nexus 6 if it didn't work. It ended up working so I stayed with my Moto X 2014.
I didn't know that everything will be so bad.

Motorola phones have notoriously hard to crack bootloaders. We are lucky we even had mofo. Hopefully maiko1 can come through for us again.
I believe this is the point in phone technology that separates the men from the boys so to speak.... The true genius from the spelling bee champion.... If this doesn't apply to you don't wear it.. But thankful to alls hard work from previous roms cracks hacks toodles!

What do you mean by zero-day? If you mean that motorola was unaware of it, well all exploits are zero-day exploits then. I don't think they would release phones if they knew there were vulnerabilities.

MoFo also worked on 5.0 and 5.0.2 bootloaders. Just not on 5.1.
I Kept telling everyone that we had a way to get 5.1 on the turbo and not to take the OTA. But I get it you where the kid in the candy store and just needed your lollipop. Look in less than 48 hours I had a system.img rooted and ready to be flashed.
You can try and warranty your phone most of them they send out are not updated to lollipop.

the problem is, we need to somehow get a rooted update.zip file into the Droid x, I am not such a big hacker on that but I have tried to get my Verizon rep to get me some contacts with Motorola, trying to persuade them this will sell more phones if people can "root" the phone. Seriously, I m trying my best here so hopefully we geet a rooted Droid x soon.

They will. No matter what, its a good situation for a DEV.
LOL it's going to take A LOT more then a simple udate.zip to root this phone. unless we do get a signed test ROM leaked. but right now i am more worried about getting an unlocked bootloader. who knows tho maybe we can use RSD also to get some access to it. i hope someone can whip up a sbf file with a unlocked bootloader on it.
The problem
The problem is that there's not even an option under bootloader to update the Droid X with an update.zip file.
But rest assured, I am sure someone will get it done, look at the Droid and Droid Incredible, they have both been rooted!
We need some kind of community team that can tell Verizon that they will actually make more money if they let people hack it. seriously, they will caz more people will buy the Droid X if they can hack it.

And how do you know this?
Like most things in life, I think the answer is in 'Follow the Money'. Motorola doesn't have as much to gain or lose by locking the phone up this tight.
VZW on the other hand is trying to generate this new revenue stream for Tethering/Wifi Access. A stream that gets obliterated by custom ROMs.
With VZW's history of requiring restrictions on phones (remember all the bluetooth restrictions they used to require on their phones? - hell they got sued over the Moto V710 stuff). I think its very naive to think VZW doesn't have a hand in this.

Yeah I don't think Verizon cares. Its T-mo and others that are anal about all this because of the way they get their bandwidth imo.
hmm did you not read the efuse article and what Moto had to say about the addition of the efuse and what it does... They made the hardware/software - verizon had zero say so in that matter - distributor vs retailer
As outlined by Droid dev Steven Bird: http://stevenbird.info/2010/07/10/the-droidx-security-and-discovery/
I know absolutely nothing about Android development, but here's hoping that another dev here can make sense of it.

Link to news of root?
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...-the-droid-x-may-not-lead-to-a-bricked-phone/
Apparently the original Droid has the same "eFuse". I think we need to reserve judgement until we find out if Moto is utilizing it or not. Just because it's there doesn't mean it's in use.
I was about to say the same thing, this chip is nothing new and doesn't stop you from rooting, get real, they even advertised the ability to root this phone in their ads

I don't know if I've seen an ad talking about root, but...
I talked to a device tester today and apparently there is something VERY different about the Droid X bootloader. They had VERY specific instructions from Moto that if the bootloader (MBM) didn't match exactly what they required to send the phone back to have the MBM updated. If it wasn't it would corrupt the phone.
Not sure if this is the same as the "eFuse", but should be interesting to see what happens the first time someone tries to mess with the bootloader.
Sorry for any misunderstanding. I dont have anything that works.

It's all good man..I don't think anyone expects anyone to risk bricking their phone if they can't replace it.
Even if you did brick it, just take it back to Big Red. They will replace it without question within 30 days and just call it DOA. More than half of the people at the stores don't care.... Trust me on this one.

Efuse will not brick your phone
Motorola says eFuse will not brick your phone, if an alternate unsighed bootloader is loaded, the phone will reboot into recovery until a signed bootloader is loaded.

I plan on picking up the x this weekend...and more than likely sending it back in 30 days either way. I also have insurance that covers just about anything, so i'm not too worried about them turning me away. Feel free to shoot me a PM or i'll follow this thread if anyone wants to test it out!
Good luck dev's!
Well since installing a custom rom will only send you back to recovery, why not root (when possible of course) and install a custom recovery? Might help get past some of the issue...idk just trying to help.
My phone will be here monday, and we better have custom roms by then or else lol
Meh, you guys realize how many phones Milestone users bricked trying to hack it right? It's not so much there's a self destruct thing as there is that the modding you do could potentially screw up the phone because you ARE messing with a bootloader and trying to get it to sign properly...
It's a tricky thing. As a Milestone user watching this board I have to say.... welcome to our world. It's one thing to say that the DROID and Incredible got hacked and what not, but this is something Milestone fans have been struggling with for like 9 months or so. It's not easy and we still haven't killed it yet. Don't come on here with too much faith as this is pretty much the same encryption scheme. I welcome the help, and perhaps one of you guys will figure it out as it is now a joint battle... but don't be surprised if it doesn't work out because none of us are holding that much hope.
The kexec vulnerability has the best chance and it's not by cracking the bootloader.
What is he kexec vulnerability? And also do you think there would any way we can bruteforce the encryption by doing some sort of a [email protected] type of ordeal?

Why cant someone get the original rom just like the Droid? That way it makes it impossible to brick.
I will offer up mine to testing. If in 30 days I will tell them it just died. After that I will spend the insurance and tell them I dropped in a pool I was surveying.
I as well would risk the recovery menu for testing. its worth it

I would honestly wait to upgrade to Android 5 if you are wanting a shot at rooting your phone. Android 5 is supposedly Googles more security focused release. I plan to hold off on any update to give devs a chance.
I am hoping the China middleman does come through though with codes for these devices. It is how my first OG Moto X was unlocked

to answer your question a little better.. why is it easy to unlock the bootloader and root any nexus? its because google decided to give us a gift with the nexus one.. the gift, fastboot oem unlock. google has made any nexus easy to root, for no other reason except its much easier. do you think google will take it away from us? i dont, as thats part of the magic that makes a nexus. actually, they did it because of all the app developers AND modders/rom developrs, so they could use their nexus to make us apps and to improve the whole nexus experience(yes, on occassion google picks code written by our xda developers and adds it into nexus devices). so leaving it easy to root also gives google more coding options. yea, i really dont think googles gonna change that.
