You need to have stock recovery and no system changes for OTA to work.
---------- Post added at 08:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:17 AM ----------
Easiest just to flash 4.4.4 with fast boot.

thank you. do you have a link to a guide on how to do that,i'm pretty much a newb when it comes to the nexus 7.
The general and Q&A sections have stickied threads always on top (little thumb tack pic beside them) you should read them all soon. All the important info is there.
Here is the flashing guide tho...
You can ask for help in most of them too.

Already looked into those and people have been posting in other forums about it not working. I got it with MetroPCS, its a decently specked phone for the price and I see a a lot of potential with it.

You have to follow the directions on downgrading first. You are probably on 4.4.4.

No there isn't
Yes. You have to odin the [root] kernel to your phone. Then root with towel root. Then re odin the kernel for your fimware. Viola, you now have root.
---------- Post added at 05:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:26 PM ----------
To be more specific, you need to know your phone's model number. You can find it in:
Settings > About Device > Model Number
Mine is the "SAMSUNG-SM-G900A"
As good practice, you should- at a bare minimum, include this information when asking this type of question.
---------- Post added at 05:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:48 PM ----------
Final thought, you do not actually have to downgrade. Just flash [Odin/Heimdall] an older kernel, then towelroot, then flash [Odin/Heimdall] the current kernel.
---------- Post added at 06:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:52 PM ----------
This is only for the Samsung-SM-G900A (firmware version G900AUCU2OA1)

That's the only way to obtain root there's no other way whether it's the NG3 firmware or OA1.
If one has NCE firmware towelroot works straight away.
Lulz. Technicalities, friend. But let's give the n00b a break.
---------- Post added at 06:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:22 PM ----------
If he does not have the AT&T model, yes there is. The international is unlocked. Just flash custom recovery then zip install su.
For others there is CF-Auto Root.
But details, details. Right?

you need to start from kitkat rooted
Well. If you want root, look for the stock ROM index, then get ne3 (or whatever kitkat has a full Odin package) flash it, and then if you want root, root here and use flashfire to flash lollipop, if not get the update .zip from the same thread and flash it for no root.

No you cannot due to the bootloader. We got lucky that the 4.4 bootloader works with 5.0. It is not hard at all my friend just download odin. flash all 4 NE3 files with odin. Use towelroot to gain root. then flash whatever rom you like from there. The long list of instructions was due to the old version of flashfire having issues. The new version is much more stable. If you get confused let me know
@Rick1684
Hmm if I'm clear, I have to upgrade to 4.4 before I can upgrade to 5.0 ...
I can't jump from 4.3 to 5.0

Odexed might have ever so slightly better battery life and bootup time, but deodexed is necessary if you want to modify your system, I.e. you want to use Xposed.

Once you're on lollipop rooted, if you want a custom ROM, check the one linked to (really the only option for this phone):

Roms for SM-t715y?

I ended up with one of these and was unaware of the "715y" variant; I had thought there was only 710/715 and 713/719.
But I have it and it was pre-rooted with nougat somehow as well as TWRP flashed. I was unaware this model could be rooted/unlocked in the first place. I've been thinking about experimenting with some Roms as it seems based on the TWRP version that this would use Roms designed for the 713, but I'm a bit hesitant on any possible risks, after all the device works pretty good as it is and there's no need to take a huge risk if it could do a ton of damage.
But I have flashed roms on other devices before without issue.
Any thoughts or info about this specific type of Tab S2?
I've T715Y like your model .. Any Rom developed for T715 is compatible with your model .. There are many roms available for T715

Huh
Seems like they have a few bugs for the Nougat versions, like the camera doesn't work, etc
Maybe I'll try some of the MM builds. Very cool that the option is available. Thanks for the info!
