Very strange device behavior, I believe that it is defective - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have bought the second hand device over e-bay and from the beginning I have some problems with it.
Unfortunately I didn't tested it much when I received it because it was still on 5.0.1 stock and rooted. My wish was to have a stock device so it could receive OTA updates as lately I don't have a time to play with the phone.
I have read the beginners guide and followed the guide to return it to stock. I have flashbooted stock recovery, latest Lolipop radio, kernel, system and locked the bootloader. After booting into OS the device has informed that there is a system update. I downloaded it OTA and it installed without a problem. Now the trouble begun when I tried to use the phone. I noticed that youtube won't play any file, Kodi also. Sometimes it even rebooted the phone, but I noticed that when hardware acceleration in Kodi is turned off it plays OK. I thought that maybe video drivers are not OK and tried to check how video benchmark works. Basemark X on medium quality went OK so I thought that I did something wrong in a process of returning the device into stock and tried with a custom ROM.
The decision was to install xTraSmooth . As I didn't had a time to read everything afterwards I found that it is Android M preview and that I should update bootloader and radio as well. But Youtube started to work, Kodi also. Than I noticed that wifi signal is dropping so I decided not to update bootloader but to return to Lolipop and I installed Chroma ROM. After it flashed youtube and Kodi problem started again. I flashed elementalx kernel and Youtube worked but when I turned on hardware acceleration in Kodi it wasn't working.
Than I returned again to xTraSmooth but updated the radio, Youtube and Kodi were working fine, at least I thought. Yesterday I discovered that on some youtube 1080p videos video just freezes the picture after maybe a minute and sound continues to work. When I lower the quality bellow hd it is OK. Strange is that some 1080p youtube videos work without a problem.
Also I bought a slimport adapter and it doesn't work (I have only tested it with xTraSmooth M preview 2). I thought that an adapter is not good but tried it with my cousin Nexus 5 and it is OK.
Don't have a Chromecast and I tried a Miracast with a build.prop hack but the picture is terrible (xTraSmooth M preview 1).
I'm starting to think that my device is defective. Could you please help? Sorry for a quite long explanation.

Please edit this into paragraphs and I'll read it, but I'm not going to read it as it is. Nothing personal, but it's difficult to read block text.

Sorry for writing the post as one block, I have split it into paragraphs now. Hope that it would be easier to read it although it is very long. I tried to explain my problem as better as I could with less words possible.

Thanks for doing that.
Youtube should work fine. I would stick to Lollipop 5.1.1 builds. It doesn't have to be stock. The preview is just a preview so some things may not work.
I cannot comment on XtraSmooth as I haven't used it.
I do have Kodi, so if there is anything you want me to test on the rom I use, please let me know.
Nexus 6 doesn't support Slimport or MHL. I've used EZCast and that seems to work fine, picture resolution wise - though performance is poor, so no good for games or video.
I dont think your device is faulty. I would recommend trying some of the latest stock roms or AOSP roms after a full factory reset and trying again with youtube. What carrier are you on / country are you in?

Thank you for your reply.
I tried Chroma ROM which is ASOP 5.1.1. and Youtube / Kodi didn't worked.
Kodi had a general problem, I was watching a stream of Sons of Anarchy with Genesis plugin but I believe that the same thing will be with any other video. Maybe if it was a video stored on internal memory it would be OK. I'll test this
Sorry to hear that Nexus 6 doesn't support Slimport, I read that it does on GSM arena, NDTV gadgets so I didn't check any further. Does anybody tried Chromcast? I bought this phone mostly to connect it with TV to watch videos and I would appreciate a lot if somebody has a working solution.
OK I will try again to wipe the whole phone and reset it from the beginning.
I'm from Croatia and carrier is Tomato but I connect the phone on internet for any serious transmission over my home wifi.

I was trying to find pokedroid thread but I didn't find anything I could use. All I found out of his threads about relocking was the questions from 2 guys who were asking about messing with their company phone. Could you please lnk the tread you are referring to. Thanks.
Anyway I had some time to play with the phone. I installed stock 5.1.1 and relock the bootloader again, I tried Benzo-Rom and XtraSmooth (both 5.1.1) I tried stock M preview and they all had a problem with a video hardware acceleration. VLC even popped out the message that there was a problem with a hardware acceleration and proposed to turn it off.
I tried internet streams, streams over my LAN, playing video from internal memory. Every time the same problem.
I tried to downclock GPU in Benzo-ROM to 400 MHz and that repaired a problem but just in some cases.
After everything I installed again XtraSmooth M preview and almost all videos were playable. I checked GPU clock in CPU-z because I thought that it may be downclocked but it was 600 MHz (max). Well I won't complain for extra power but it is very strange that hardware acceleration works stable on overclocked GPU on preview OS and it doesn't work on stock clock on stable OS release.
Finally after being couple days on XtraSmooth M preview I tried to watch some video from facebook app but it rebooted my phone. I was going through developers options in setting menu and turned on "Disable HW overlays" and after this every video is playing ok.
Can anybody help me with this problem.

After a lot of trying I finally decided to ask Motorola for a help but unfortunately when entering IMEI number it was rejected. Now I am worried that the phone might be stolen and changed IMEI number. Maybe during that change something has gone wrong and that is why the phone is not working as it should be. Is there any way to check this without going to Motorola service because I live too far. The guy that has sold the phone isn't registered at ebay any more, which I discovered just today.

Many thanks, it showed that it is not blacklisted so I tryed again at Motorola pages and now it was OK, maybe it was some problem on the page because I tried about 5 - 6 times writing it all over again.

I have continued trying to repair the phone but unfortunately I have broken it more.
My WiFi connectin was breaking very often, signal was week, I found how to repair and rebuild persist folder and after the process sensors are not working. I have applied the following:
I have rebooted in TWRP and enered the following commands:
Code:
adb shell
e2fsck -y /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist
make_ext4fs /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist
Persist exist but in TWRP I can see it only as a file not as folder.
After I have tried to fastboot everything from the scratch (bootloader, radio, system, userdata . . . ) several times. I have wiped everything from TWRP. I have tried to return to stock 5.0.0. over nexus root kit, than update it to 5.1.1. but still sensors do not work. Is there any method to return this?

Just to update with the situation: I have installed CM 12.1 hoping that it will repair the issue somehow. Unfortunately it didn't.
Then I went through the root folder and folder /persist exist and it has sens.req file On the other hand it seems that my wifi and data reception are working much better. Is it possible to copy /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist file from some other phone into mine to repair the problem?

I have been reading more and maybe found out what has happened. I think that I have messed EFS but I am not sure as I didn't do a backup. Can somebody please answer is my conclusion true and could it be that the phone will be repaired with just a software correction? If yes is there any mothod to repair ESN other than sending it to service because I would have to send it out of my country (nexus is not selling here and none of the services I contacted will take it for repair).

Nexus One restarting randomly (different ROMs, radios, connections, apps, etc)

Carrier: AT&T
Country / Language: USA / English
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): Android 2.1, 2.2, CM 5.0.6
My Nexus One is restarting randomly. I have unlocked the bootloader in order to test out different ROMs and have experienced the issue with Cyanogen's Mod, Android 2.1, Android 2.2 and the HTC Sense Rom. It doesn't seem to be limited to a single app, either. I have reset the phone to as close to stock as I can (2.1, no new apps, stock bootloader as well), and I still have these random restarts. I notice it the most when there is a data transfer going on OTA, whether 3G, Edge or WiFi. Could it be a kernal issue or radio issue? I have done my best to troubleshoot via the internet and my limited knowledge, but nothing is working! Please help!
Try reflashing the recovery, wiping the data/cache etc and reflashing both the ROM and the radio. I had this problem too and doing one of these ended up fixing it. Hope this helps!
My phone did the same and it seemed to be a hardware error. I have returned it to HTC and am awaiting a new device. Hopefully it is not the same for you and a reflash will solve it.
I really think this is a bad RAM issue.
I had this happen to my Nexus (ATT). It was prior to flashing froyo. I tried everything, flashing back to stock (including radio), cyan's latest, Paul's (stock) Froyo (with and without radio). Same result. Seemingly random reboots.
I thought initially that it was a software issue - It would not reboot while in fastboot/Amon's Recovery. But having tried every software combination, I've concluded that it MUST be hardware, unless I'm missing something big.
The phone, for the most part, would be fine as long as I DON'T TOUCH IT. It would stay idle for a long period of time (24hrs+), then I would use it Everything from web browsing to downloading apps to making calls, and it would reboot. It's frustrating because it seems that it's rebooting for no reason except that I'm touching it.
Sent in for a replacement, it arrives today. Hopefully it will not suffer this problem.

How were the two of you able to send in your phones after unlocking the bootrom, thus invalidating your warranty?

Hate to necro a thread that is starting to get old but I am having the same issue. Will they still send you a new phone if it is indeed bad RAM? How long does it usually take from the time you send it in?
I have the exactly the same phone and have the exact same problem. Problem is I am in Costa Rica and I would have to send it back with my uncle on the 10th, but then I wont get it back for another month. If I just buy another nexus while I get the current one repaired, do you think I will get another one with the same problem? You can still buy an at&t nexus if you are an android developer correct?

It only invalidates your warranty if you damaged your phone by unlocking. This is a problem that came stock with the phone, we only unlocked it to try fix the problem.
is it a confirmed hardware issue? i started getting this symptom and downgraded to 2.1, flashed the Froyo FRF85 and so far its ok. I also had to format SD card.
If HTC/Google has a confirmed hardware issue on their hand...i smell something akin to antennagate albeit with less finger pointing

[Q] YouTube Videos Don't Load While Connected to WiFi

Hey guys,
You can find a summary of what I've done to my HTC One in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48582638.
On top of that, I've changed my Cell ID to the Google Play version (GOOGL001), I flashed the RUU with the Google Play version RUU, and I've installed the 4.4.2 OTA update from Google's servers.
Everything else works fine. Just when I'm connected to WiFi, videos don't load on the YouTube app (Vevo as well, but I'm assuming it's the same issue). I've tried connecting to three different WiFi connections (my house, my work, my parents') just incase there was an IP conflict or something; and still the same problem.
Do you think this is a problem with what I've done to my phone, the 4.4.2 OTA update, or the YouTube app itself?
*UPDATE* - I found out that when I take out my sim card, streaming videos works on WiFi. It only doesn't seem to work when it's connected to both a mobile network and WiFi
Thanks.
- Brian
I have exact same problem on my HTC with 4.4.2. I also converted my HTC to Google play edition. And did 4.4.2 update. YouTube app Dr doesn't work on WiFi.. It's so frustrating..

I am having the same issue. I think it has to do more with wifi speeds than just YouTube. I have really poor Wifi down speed (less than 1mbps) and really fast upload speed (10mbps). There is something wrong here and it doesnt matter what rom I run, and I've narrowed it down that it is not my wifi router or service provider, I recently switched internet providers, and I doubt it is a hardware defect in my phone because my wife has consistent speeds to me on her One.
Long story short, I'm at a loss here on trying to figure out what is the root of this issue. Hope someone may figure out an answer.
OMG i have the same problem. I converted my htc one's CID then flashed the google RUU. I noticed after the 4.4 update youtube videos will not load on wifi. I tried in chrome as well and they dont load their either. I just get a message saying sorry video not available or something.
This is what happens
1. click on video to load.
2. video will start to load
3. youtube app shows loading of advertisement
4. app locks up for a couple sec
5. app comes back, but it just shows the loading circle indefinitely
I thought the update i sideloaded was corrupt or something so i reflashed the 4.2.2 RUU and then manually updated using OTA and it still did not work
Videos load flawlessly over my data connection. This issue has gotten me so frustrated i was actually trying to go back to a sense rom.

We should let this issue be known all over the web so it gets more coverage. Let's all try posting this problem on different websites and forums, so somebody will find a fix. Once a fix is found, we should post the solution back here.
I found by flashing the firmware over a new rom it will work until the phone is rebooted again (running 4.06 firmware, 4.2.2 rom)
Same problem since 4.4.2 update
I deleted the application data, clearing the cache and reinstalled the apk from the market but youtube is still stuck on the loading videos (over data or wifi both with good speed).
IDIT : it works after a reboot with wifi disabled!
Took so much effort to convert phone to GPE.. with 4.4 RUU.. updated to 4.4.2.. and youtube don't work on wifi..
That is my 75% used app.. It will send video fine to chromecast.. but won't play on phone..
Wifi only issue.. On mobile data works fine.. Tried all what i could.. reset phone.. delete data for youtube.. uninstall update for Youtube..
After two days of struggle.. restored my stock sense rom.. cant live without youtube..
It really sucks..

Yeah, lol. Tell me about it! If you look at my link at the top of this thread, you will see all the trouble I went through to get my HTC One to stock Android, and now video streaming doesn't work on WiFi.
I'm not switching back to HTC Sense UI though. I hate any version of Android that's not stock. Thankfully, I have a Nexus 5 I can use while waiting for a fix. I'm not completely switching over to a Nexus device because I like the front stereo speakers as well as the design of the HTC One.
I have a similar issue:
Youtube works after a complete reboot (and with wifi connected), but if I go off this wifi and back on again, it won't work until I reboot the phone again.

It's stil working for me. The thing is I have only one Wi-Fi connection to test on.
Same problem converted gpe OTA 4.2.2 stock I have multiple WiFi and 2 different ISP no change. hope someone find a solution

I installed adblock plus and I still can't stream videos while connected to WiFi.
I dont think this is a wifi speed problem. My connection is 45/4 so i should have no problems with youtube. Mine still does not work
This was bothering me so much that I decided to install a non-GPE rom instead. I went for the Omni Rom 4.2.2 and it works just fine with the videos.
I will switch back to a GPE once this is sorted out, but I am ok with this setup now. Good luck!!

[Q] Videos won't play (M7)

I have a Sprint HTC One M7 which is S-Off and WAS rooted/on a custom rom. Why emphasize WAS? Because recently I've developed a strange issue. Any/ALL stock Sense based rom refuses to play stream videos, YouTube videos or any other videos in general. I have searched the issue up online and not one matching case on XDA. Other sources solutions are ridiculous. The funny thing is that videos play 100% fine on any AOSP based rom. This device is not currently connected to Sprint at all, only WiFi, same issue on any WiFi network I try. Oh, back to the emphasis on WAS, I have tried to factory reset, wipe internal storage, and finally, flashed an RUU and took OTA updates up to official Sense 6 and still no luck.
I have read some complications due to Google Movies app but I don't use or touch that app at all, regardless, how is it possible that that app is to interfere specifically with STREAM videos out of all videos sources? And how come it gives no issues on non-Sense based roms?
Any reasonable suggestions/solutions will gladly be THANKED.
SOLVED: Weird, I updated all Google Play apps and it seems to be working. Or it mayjust have been the Youtube online mobile site causing problems instead. I did indeed experience problems with video streaming on websites other than YouTube on other Sense roms, but in the case of returning to stock, it seems to have been a simpler issue
I was wrong, started happening again randomly with all videos again...this is hopeless.

This is really weird.. this is the second time I've heard of this problem. Hasn't happened to me yet though.

Yeah its annoyingly random. I had to jump back to a custom aosp-based rom in the meanwhile. It was working again then it just stopped. I wanted to stick to a Sense based rom as the battery life is very promising. For now i have chosen Beanstalk for its stability/battery life as my temporary choice. I just wish I knew what causes it. Doesnt sound like any Androud virus I've ever heard of, and I've never actually heard of an android virus except something about rootkits.

My theory is that there's something wrong with the libs on a Sense ROM, that makes it incompatible with the newer versions of YouTube. Might be wrong though, since I'm not a developer. Also, since it happens randomly >.>.

Its not just YouTube its actually...everything. Netflix, MTV app, YouTube, both stock web browser and Chrome when streaming videos, the list goes on. I didnt get to test what happens with videos played from the internal storage though...

[Q] Tmobile Note 4 Lollipop - Screen Mirroring choppy video playback

I've got a Tmobile Note 4 running Lollipop (updated OTA yesterday). I use a Samsung Wireless Dongle and Screen Mirroring to watch some shows. I noticed yesterday that video playback has become extremely choppy since the Lollipop update. Anyone else experiencing this issue? I double checked my network settings and everything is working smoothly. Video playback on the Note 4 itself is just fine. Just choppy on my TV screen when Screen Mirroring through the Wireless Dongle. Any ideas about how to address this would be much appreciated. I am rooted, running stock TouchWiz Lollipop ROM, if that matters.
Try without the dongle? It does work wireless if you have a smart tv
I have the dongle because I don't have a Wi-Fi Direct/Screen Mirroring capable television. I did dig around in Application Manager and found Wi-Fi Direct Share, and I've cleared the cache and data for it. I'll try it out this evening to see if that will get it working smoothly again.
Should note that on KitKat, the Dongle worked just fine. It is a Samsung brand wireless dongle.
There is no data nor cache to clear on Screen Mirroring app itself nor on the Wi-Fi Direct app. So crossing my fingers this Wi-Fi Direct Share has something to do with it.
I have the same samsung wireless dongle but since I updated to 5.0 i havent had the chance to stream, ill give input in a few when i get home. Also i had a lot of freezing while watching movies on 4.4 not sure if you ever experienced that, it was very annoying. Also I'm stock.
Still not resolved
Wireless dongle playback is still choppy as described in OP. Interested to here from others. A better description might by jerky... Audio is just fine. Might dig around in the build.prop file later. Otherwise, any feedback from others experiencing this issue or others who might have an idea for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.
Try booting up in recovery and wiping cashe partition that seems to fix a lot of strange problems for me.
No such luck, mate. Thanks for the suggestion, though. It's bareable as is right now, but it does bug the **** out of me. Haha. I'm just wondering if anyone else out there is experiencing this. I'm thinking of borrowing a Chromecast off someone to see if it has the same issue. I mean, the video in every app is smooth as butter on my phone screen, but the TV is jerky ever so slightly via the Samsung Dongle. I know it's not just me because my wife who typically cares less about tech noticed it.
Leave it to good ol Sammy. Sort of like that BS way they built screen mirroring to break on rooted devices using third party (read:non Samsung dongle) back on the Note 3. Anyone have an idea of something I could try to edit in the build.prop file? Any other ideas? I found an app on the Play Store that's meant to fix Screen Mirroring issues after an update, but when loaded it doesn't give me the option to run it, apparently it thinks I am already patched. Oh. And Samsung was the manufacturer of that app, go figure. So apparently this has happened in in the past?
If all else fails, I may just try a fresh install. I'm trying to wait for the latest version of TWRP because I heard some folks have had no luck flashing ROMs through TWRP after upgrading to Lollipop OTA and then rooting (which is what I did; I never rooted on KitKat because I wanted to keep my 1 yr Sammy Warranty intact, just in case). I know tripping Knox apparently doesn't affect the Tmobile insurance, but I've read varying stories on whether it affects your Sammy factory warranty.
Well. I'm off off to play some AC Unity on the PS4. I'll check back later. Happy trails
I am experiencing the same issue ever since I updated to lollipop. Video mirroring to my Samsung smart TV very choppy.
Nobody has any possible solutions for this? Please give it a shot if you have any ideas whatsoever. Now we have two confirmed reports.
Quick update. Hard reset and even unroooting the device didn't resolve the issue. Definitely something baked into to the latest TMO stock ROM
I've even had the screen freeze on the chromecast when mirroring but audio still plays
@knarfies I used to get a similar issue with Netflix but Lollipop resolved it. So can you connect with Chrome cast, but it freezes occasionally? How often is it happening? The Samsung Dongle works without freezing audio or video but is jerky enough for me and the wife to notice. Wasn't like that on KitKat.
I'm running stock and im using the samsung dongle and the video actually plays smoother on 5.0, when I was on 4.4 it use to freeze all the time I'm not sure why is not playing gird for you guys, plus whatever I was on 4.4 the video playback in general would freez during playback even when I was not screen mirring.
I am currently rooted with a custom kernel and stock ROM, but even before the mods, it was no longer working correctly. Samsung has an app on the Play Store to patch problems with Screen Mirroring after a software upgrade, but when I downloaded it, it said I was already patched. Even after a hard reset and completely non rooted stock everything it hasn't worked perfectly like it did on KitKat since Lollipop.

Slow loading times on Android 6.0

Hey guys, I had posted a while back saying that for some reason, after flashing the new build of Marshmallow to my Nexus 6, the load times for web pages and just about everything else seems to be a bit slower than usual. I had said at the end of the post that it was fixed, but now the problem is arising again. Is anyone noticing long load times with all apps that use internet? Web pages load slower, the Facebook app takes much longer to load pictures and posts, Skype took longer to login and show everyone's profile pics etc. Never had this problem before on lollipop!
EDIT: Also, when I switch between my 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi bands, it shows a push notification that says that this WiFi signal has no internet access, and then it connects just fine after a few more seconds. This is odd. Maybe just a buggy first run of Marshmallow?

It's not loading really at all, but that's also due to my LTE coverage being awful in my area, that's always been bad haha so no change there. My other devices in the house are working just fine on my network, the Nexus 6 however seems to load slower, and it's only now that I'm on Android 6.0! Is it working fine for you?
EDIT: Just an update here, hours later, it may be my internet connection, possibly. But I'm not 100% sure on that either. If nobody else is having this issue, it may just be. Like I said though, it seems to be working fine with my other devices!
EDIT 2: http://imgur.com/gallery/TGiCU55 This is a speed test I did on my phone, I have 30Mbps internet and that shows!
I'm having same issue. Dirty flash. Kinda wondering if a clean factory reset is in order.
no issues here....came from a clean flash, which is standard protocol.
M seems fast so far, but I did change my animations Scale from 1.00 to .50! The only website to load very slow is XDA... go figure!

Yup. I did same. I might try the lollipop radio. Idk...
XDA is always sloooooow, even on a fast PC.
I've seen several other people mention slow net speeds on M as well but I've not noticed it yet. The WiFi code of M caused issues awhile back on some previous builds of HellsCore kernel too. I dont know the specifics of it though.

So there was a definite change in the radio for this build then. More than a subtle change. I wonder if it's just not perfect, I realize having a Nexus means getting the first run of all Android software, but I wonder if this is a bug in the build, or a radio that could use some work. But it does sometimes take longer to load things! I'm on very fast WiFi too!

I honestly don't know and would like to hear more specifics. I can tell you I've seen comments on this board the last couple fo days talking about massive WiFi battery drain as well.
I only know HellsCore adopted the newer M code for WiFi in his kernel and people were affected. He then had to create two builds of the kernel. One with newer WiFi code that didn't cause any issues for people and another build with the older WiFi code from L. Have you checked his G+ site?

No I haven't! I'll check that out! So that leads me to believe that it was a change in the new radio! He had to change it to code used in L radio so that may be it! Thanks for the info! I'll look into that some more!
Is it possible to flash the lollipop radio to test? I'd think you could. But I'm not 100%.

So you're saying if I flash the radio file from a 5.1.1 stock image, marshmallow will boot and work correctly? I might try that!

Hey guys! An update here, I just read through another post that was about this same issue, and someone in there said that downloading DNset from the play store fixes this issue! It changes your WiFi settings from ipv4/ipv6 to just ipv4. I did it and it's working so far, but I'm going to give it some more testing and see if it fixed! Try it out

Were you able to solve your slow page load issue?
I having same issue coming out of the box with a new N6P.
On TMO & Wifi - my old OPO had no issues.
But seems at least on LTE about town, my pages for social media & browsers are sloooooow.

Hey dude, well honestly it didn't seem to fix it. Placebo effect lol What I think it comes down to is just Marshmallow being rough around the edges at this point because I have stock rooted Marshmallow 6.0 on my Nexus 6 and have cyanogenmod 12.1 installed as a secondary ROM, When booted into cyanogenmod, pages load much faster and it's more responsive as far as I can tell! So, it must be a bug with Marshmallow! Keep in mind cyanogenmod 12.1 uses Android 5.1.1 as a base!
