Most threads here and across the 'net seem obsessed (probably correctly) with the Z3+ thermal issues. I cannot find any real analysis of the sound quality, either via headphones or BT.
I have three broad questions:
1. What is the impact of the new automatic headphone calibration system? Does it do anything useful?
2. How is the BT performance with apt-x headphones?
3. Anyone used LDAC with Sony headphones? If so, does it work well and does it sound demonstrably different with hires files?
I'm asking all these questions as I've recently 'upgraded' from a Z3 Compact to a LG G4. Found the sound quality from the Z3C pretty good, though had the occasional BT connection glitch. Not too fond so far of the LG G4's audio, and BT seems to have a weird issue with performance - a digital 'haze' when also connected with a Smartwatch. Just wanted to know what the Z3+ is like in audio terms, as I have only a few days left with my carrier to swap phones, and Z3+ is all I'm realistically considered. Not a fan of Samsung phones at all, and a removable SD card is key for me, so that rules out the S6 anyway.

Now I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the word, but I do like my music to sound good.
That said, I can tell you that the apt-x headphones I used with my Z4 (Panasonic Backbeat Pro) sound absolutely amazing.
I have not given LDAC a try, but I know very little about it. It is for FLAC files over wireless, right?

Its for HiRes fies, not just FLAC. Anything recorded beyond CD quality. Thanks for the comments.

I'm a bit of an audiophile, but only when it comes to music production (metal music in particular).
That being said, the sound quality through headphones is amazing. I've been using either the Bose Noise Comfort 15, and the Quadbeats that my LG G4 came with, and I must say - I love the sound quality when ClearAudio+ is enabled.
The only downside to the audio aspect of the Z3+ is the fact that the speakers are horribly low. At their highest volume, they're not loud, and the phone vibrates a lot because of the sound. It's clear, but just very quiet. I'd be a bit hesitant with raising the max volume via root (not sure if that can be accomplished with this phone, but I did it with my G3) because the phone really does shake a lot.
I can only comment on the headphone output of the phone, I do not use speakerphone for anything but the occasional call and YT video. I wouldn't expect them to be anything decent, though I've found them to be adequate for my use. I'm coming from a Moto X (2013) for reference.
I'm no expert so take as you will. My brief listening experience with the phone has all been done with these suckers:

Those are Alclair Reference CIEMs. Yea, they're badass. No, I do not have an amp between them and the phone, they are wired directly.
I've played 320kbps MP3s and Flac files. They all sound good, I notice no difference between this and the Moto X. I did however notice a slight difference when I enabled the Xperia smart sound (I think that's what it was called), it made the image stage a bit wider. Otherwise I found the sound to be as accurate as my previous phone, though I attribute that mostly to the headphones.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed, but when I put a call on speaker the sound that comes out of it is really really crappy...
Is there *any* way this could somehow be improved, without changing the speaker itself?
The voices sound totally metallic and screeching like this
Turning down the volume doesn't really help, cause then I can't hear the voices at all....
What is your experience with this?
So it's just me...?
I read here on Xda some similar opinions.....

Nope mine is the same, it really does suck..sounds far too tinny...
me too and I was pretty disappointed when I listened to music via the headset too, no bass and low volume, at least with the Windows Media Player, maybe TCPMP does better.

This is definitely a bug, in the middle of playing a song, switch the Audio Booster OFF, then unplug and replug the headphones, then switch the Audio Booster back on. Problem solved.
On another note, the supplied headphones aren't that great anyway. I'm waiting for a USB to 3.5mm audio adapter in the mail, and then I will test the bass with some proper headphones. But do try my suggestion above as it does fix the bass issue. Only problem is you will find yourself doing that fix a lot! The problem will reoccur eventually.
Thanks, actually I hadn't even thought of trying the "Audio Booster", why the heck do you need that anyway ?! SRS Wow I can understand being optional, but that ?
I have a 3.5" adapter handing around from my Kaiser will try it with better headphones, but the Touch Dual had decent sound with the supplied headset. I think it was a different player though, HTC Player ? Where did that go !
f'course the speakers suck big time. It ain't a Sony Ericsson though!
using an MP3/WAV as ring tone is a disaster, so better stick to the on-board electronic high treble midi tones.
HTC had only 1 device made in the last years with good sound: Atom life with double stereo speakers if I am not mistaken.
my Tytn II sounds better in all aspects and that was neither a glory.
I am starting to think that mine sucks more than average now. Even the regular tones that come with the phone really really suck.
And putting a conversation on speaker, well that just sounds like talking through 2 cans with a wire in between them.
"Is it just me or is the speaker really crappy?"
What do u expect from something this small?

Thats because Diamond has a low-pass filter that effectively cuts low frequencies from sound output.
To what purpose, I have no idea. But thats a sad fact.

I expect the speakerphone to at least be useable. It's so bad that the option shouldn't even be there on the phone. If I'd known it was this bad I wouldn't have bought the phone in the first place as this feature is quite important to me.
I expect the speakerphone (and general call quality) to at least be as good as other phones of similar size (Nokia, Sony Ericsson etc).
I expect the battery to last more than 12 hours with direct push turned on.
I expect to be flamed for writing this by people who are happy with their phone because they don't need this and that function.
I expect I'll be replacing my phone with something that works well as soon as I can afford to.
wow thats a lot of expectations!
most people use forums like these to determine what is good & what is crap BEFORE they make the big commitment.

get the ultimate ears pair. skull candy is overpriced like crazy. head over to head-fi.org and read some reviews. the HD2 in cable music control is the same as the iphone, so its nothing new. plenty of headphones out there from the cheap $5 stuff on handhelditems.com to the $350 ultimate ear triplefi 10vi support it.

I use the Etymotic Research HF2+ Headset and they are amazing! Balanced sound without all the extra bass. Audio Booster is used to its full potential with a great set of noise-isolating headset such as this.
I have a set of Westone UM3X - sweet perfection - but am looking for a mic/vol/voicecmd button type adapter. Any ideas? Someone mentioned on this thread the HD2 has the same pin out as the iphone so those should work?
Here you go get'em while on sale I know I am!

What will you be doing with these headphones? I know I had some motorola ROKR BT Headphones and when I went running they would cut out. So just a thing to be careful about if you decide to get those BT Headphones.
I've also been looking for a good headset for this phone. The wired headset I got with the phone hurts horribly when used for more than a few seconds. I'm hoping I can find something either wired or bluetooth that will have the play/pause, next track and previous track capabilities with this phone.
I'm not willing to just make my own headset simply because I have a terrible tendency to burn myself constantly each and every time I solder something.
Simply put, is there a commercially available headset (wired or bluetooth) that is able to supply similar functionality (that people can confirm) to the one included with the phone?

Just received my iharmonix IHX-PLAT-I Platinum i-Series earphones. Gotta say these are the best sound quality earbuds I have ever heard. Fitment is great. I use these while I'm om my chopper and they will stay in place up to 80mph easy. However... No volume, No song skip, It does have song pause, phone answer, phone dial last number called, and phone hang-up. Microphone sound quality is very good as well. Highly recommend at $39.99 and free shipping.
Hello,
does anybody use different headphones rather than those from Motorola? I would like to buy a better ones but I really like possibility to use them during calls.
Are there any of these really existing?
Have a look at Sony Ericsson Xperia X10's earphones. I think Sony's earphones are better than Motorola's.
yup
Sure there is a earphones.
I'm using the Ultimate (UE) SF4Vi w/ my Milestone.
It equipped w/ a mic and answer button, could play/stop music, hope y'll like it.

There are a variety of aftermarket headphones available with mics these days. I can't attest to the quality, but know that both Samsung and Skull Candy offer models that you should be able to find in any electronics store.
get a philips bluetooth headset, it's great.

I'm using skull candy holua headphones. the earbuds are all wood, multiple sized rubber inserts and also foam inserts for comfort, in line mic, button to stop and start music, they sound awesome.
I don't recommend Skullcandy, because the sound quality is subpar at best. Better off getting Ultimate Ears Metro-Fi's or Klipsch Image S4i.
question is whether your earbuds will outdo your phone or not.
I have the Super Fi 5 Pros and the Triple Fi 10 Pros and I have to say those are all overkill for a Milestone. LOL.
But still, they are both nice as they accept Ultimate Ears' vi cables which adds a mic.
Yeah the Milestone might not have good sound quality anyway, but still it's nice to have good quality buds. I've heard the TF10's and they are quite amazing, on par with the Sennheiser IE8 and Shure SE530, in my opinion.
Google "Sentry HM300". $5 bucks at Big Lots, and fairly cheap elsewhere. Sound is crisp, with a bit of punch at the low-end, and thus far have been pretty durable. The mic has a start/stop/answer switch. The colored portions you see are actually metal, and they look nice, too. I've been very pleasantly surprised.
And if you misplace them or accidentally jerk them or something, you won't have that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that comes with a $80-200 pair of earbuds.

...not if you amp the Milestone I only wish that the Milestone had a line-out cable like the iPhone LOD.
I tried out a work colleagues skullcandy buds he other day which had a mic and were noise cancelling. The noise canelling effect in particular was impressive for the price.
You can buy any iPhone compatible earphones. The only one with in-line mic and answer button. Not the control talk models (with volume up and down) because it got some problems with our phones. Pay attention for Samsung and Nokia compatible because they don't work: GND and Mic contacs are swapped on them (like OMTP standards and our Milestone is not OMTP compatible).
I got a pair of Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket with in-line mic and it's not so bad. I've got also the Atomic Floyd HiDefDrum + Microphone and these are much better, best earphones ever had. Really comfortable and the sound is great!!! Little expensive (to be sincere) but sound is wonderful.
Be really carefull if you search for the Monster Beats Tour or others made by Monster because there's some fake chinese models clone that really look like originals. You can find more information about this on the web or ask me for more if you need
Bose mobile... expensive, a little overkill on the base, but fantastic sound quality! Go to Amazon or NewEgg... don't buy anything @ Veri$on store. They want double price for a 32g microSDHC, and about $30 extra for the Bose earbuds!

Hello, I have HTC HD2 with Android MIUI on board. And I wanted to get new headphones, because the only headphones, that i have alive, are my old Phillips (5 years)
So can someone help me ?
1. i need them to be in-ear
2. they have to work with my phone
3. they must have flat wire
4. them must have L-shaped plug
I found only 2 headphones, that are OK with me, but i never head about 1 of them.
What i found: Beats Tour and a-Jays, but Beats don't have L-shaped plug, so i am sure, that they will die after month of using.
a-Jays have several versions, from one to four.Four was designed to fit iPhone, but it has all i need, so will it work with my HTC HD2?

Although they hinted that the headphones will work with the HD2 along with the buttons, they weren't direct. Here is their reply:
>Dear Faris,
Sorry for the lateness of our reply, it is vacation time in Sweden.
The product is design specifically for Apple’s own products and that is what we recommend you use it for. However, whilst some of the features (like answer calls / pause and play music etc.) might work with other devices, we have decided not to market it in this way.
Hope it answer your question.

And How will the buttons be functioning?

Can I buy anywhere BOSE on a good price?
Hands down the Astro A*Stars. These are what I use on a daily basis, they're built for gaming, and work well on my PS3 as well (with their amplifier it does amazing surround sound), but they really pump on the HD2. I should note that I get my best performance from MIUI Music as well (I switch ROMs frequently), even though I love CM7, the MIUI music player (or try Uber Music) is noticeably clearer with these headphones and a few other I've tried. The in-line controls work well for play/pause on any ROM, volume controls are excellent, and I have literally stood in front of a fan and used them to make phone calls with total clarity. The mic is wind-shielded. My only wish for the product would be a skip button as well.

i got my in-ears from deal-extreme, they come for $1.80 so even if they break its no big deal..
Quality really isnt bad at all.
I have the Shure SE 215. For me they are really perfect and sound awesome.
But it depends on what kind of music you like. Do you want much bass or is the clarity important.
On head-fi.org forum you can get some really good advice for in-ear monitors. They helped me to.

I've had better. My old, and long gone, epic 4g had the most impressive sound with voodoo enhancements. My s2 and 4 are kinda meh compared to that. Forgot what the sound chip in the s1 was.

The Qualcomm-powered Samsung I9505 Galaxy S4 had the tinniest of edges in the headphones-plugged-in testing scenario, exhibiting slightly cleaner audio output, but we doubt anyone will be able to hear the difference. The Exynos-packing I9500 Galaxy S4 makes up for it with an advantage that's a bit easier to hear on your own - slightly higher maximum volume levels.

I had the s1 wolfson with voodoo It was great. By far the best audio recording phone. Now the s2 that thing was junk. The yahama was a waste. I think the s4 wins besides audio recording
I'm not an "audiophile" by any stretch of the imagination but I have a pretty good ear. Using the stock headphones, I'm hearing subtlys in sound and music that I don't hear on any other setup in my house...I was quite impressed when I plugged the headphones in.
I'm not trolling, but the 4s I had for a short time had a nice audio section in it. Lots of output to drive the input of the car stereo aux in. It was probably just a better impedance match for the headphones I had and the car radio. If the impedance is too high, it will have too low output on devices that aren't close to what the phone's headphone Jack impedance is. I'll look it up sometime when I feel motivated enough.
I still use viper audio to do some tweaks tho
Has anyone noticed/had the following problem with Viper? Every so often the in-call audio is completely disabled and you have to briefly toggle to speakerphone and back to hear anything. From my tests, even the mic gets muted and neither you nor the other party can hear anything.
At first I thought my phone is defective, then I thought that something is wrong with the rom, but this issue quickly ceases to exist when I uninstall the viper4android driver. I like the effects that V4A provides, but can't handle having to toggle to speaker and back to hear anything. I've tested this with stock rooted rom and SAC's v4 rom.
Just got the S4 yesterday, upgraded my personal phone from the original Epic... Granted I've not played with this Viper mod all too much yet, but so far the audio is crap in my opinion. Not as bad as the Gnex I had on my corp phone line (Gnex is terrible for audio!) but when compared to the Epic/Wolfson/Voodoo combination the S4 so far has not impressed me in the audio department. Guess I'll still carry my trusty old Epic around as an MP3 player - the old bastard gets better with age it seems
IMO the difference between my nexus s with voodoo and my s4 is negligible. However I am no audiophile...
