T-Mobile/MetroPCS Tethering - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

T-Mobile/MetroPCS has really cracked down on tethering lately. Does the Nexus 6 have any issues wifi tethering on T-Mobile/MetroPCS?

no issues, i tether fine in tmobile. btw, for the regular plans, they include tether. for a completely unlimited high speed data, they let you tether 5gb. for a limited plan, they allow unlimited tether. now you can opt to dive deeper into it, by rooting your device and enabling a hack that will let you tether unlimitedly, without your provider seeing.

I'm hearing that it's not possible for the N6 to tether on Metro w/o root.

As far as I know you DO need root to hide your tethering

Can anyone link me to the root method of tethering?

Yes, that's been the case. But even now that they allow tethering, everything I've seen indicates that the Nexus 6 can't tether without root on Metro.

Question about WiFi Hotspot on Froyo

My current data plan does not allow tethering, more specifically the use of the phone as an internet modem. But I know apps like PDAnet can bypass it and behaves like a mobile web app so that I won't get charged extra. I was wondering if the Froyo's new WiFi hotspot feature behaves like PDAnet.
Thanks!
yes it does.
It works for me too and I'm loving it.
Sorry to get off topic i didn't want to start an entire thread. If I may speculatr; If any of the 4 major carriers were to allow tethering I think its T-Mobile, they are focused on improving their 3g while the others are worried about 4g and Verizon is even making overtures for tiered, limited plans for 4g. I know very little but T-Mobile is finally losing customers and can't afford to be restrictive plus their relatively few subscribers means they are unlikely to have overuse issues that can disrupt service, plus afaik T-Mobile USA doesn't have mobile data plans other than for cell phones. Again this is all speculation and I don't know if carriers have official positions on tethering but T-Mobile just seems to me the most likely to allow it for free, I don't see how it would cost them anything, and with tethering working so well I'd prefer cheap 3g (which is theoretically super fast by the end of 2010) with tethering and unlimited data than 4g, no tethering, more expensive, and tiered.

[stock Google Nexus One (not rooted or unlocked) on AT&T 3G (without a tethering plan)]
I have used PdaNet for a few weeks with great success, but it is only a tether, not a hotspot.
I manually updated to FRF91 a couple days ago and have been using the native Froyo WiFi Hotspot functionality instead of PdaNet.
Overall it seems to work, though there has been occasional weirdness. Sometimes when I try to connect my Windows 7 laptop to the AndroidAP hotspot, it takes forever, and then I get "limited connectivity - no internet access". And sometimes it just works fine. At least once there was no default gateway set after "connecting" (so, no data!). I do not know where the problem is - Windows, Android, or AT&T.
I have read elsewhere (from a Google source) that the carriers CAN SEE if you have the tethering/hotspot function enabled, and in fact THEY CAN DISABLE the functionality remotely. I have also seen other info that contradicts this, though I am predisposed to believe the (claimed) Google source. It doesn't make sense to me that the carriers would allow this functionality onto the phone if they could not control it.
We shall see.....

Whats the best Captivate rom for wifi tethering?

I'm just curious, which rom or roms out there have wifi tethering enabled in them that will allow you to tether an ipad or android tablet?

There are quite a few (if not all) of them that do this.
Be aware, though - if you do this without a tethering plan, AT&T is likely to catch on and change your plan to a tethering plan.
this is true, but if you have the unlimited data plan, then you rly don't need to wry until you start getting upwards of 4-5gigs, also you can edit your apn so that it doesn't show on their end that you are tethering.
mainly my friend/boss is wanting to be able to use his captivate to tether his ipad 2 while at work to do work reports and such.
i was just curious if there was any particular rom that functioned better than others as far as battery life and stability.
you may want to post this APN tweak for the other ATT boys, i have not read of this..

Tether for unlimited grandfathered ATT

For those out there with unlimited grandfathered att plans how do you tether without att sending nasty grams. I realize vpn is the way to go to avoid ttl detection but is there any apps that do this seamlessly?
Get FoxFi - it doesn't work for WiFi tethering, but I can confirm it works for USB tethering.
Will give it a shot thanks, Will it allow VPN as well using Foxfi?
If you don't use VPN they will know you are tethering and will potentially terminate your unlimited data. Keep in mind they monitor data in different way. TTL being one of the easier methods.

So is FoxFi not enough then?. They say they use your phone to generate all network requests when you click on the "Hide Tether Usage" and then go on saying most users currently do not need this extra feature.

ATT will sniff packets or use other methods like TTL and redirects (proxy) to determine if you are actually tethering or not. So if you don't hide your packets they will know if you are tethered or not. Sure you can use the app but ATT will likely find a way to notify you or cut you off. There were even reports they have insight to your phone and the apps on the phone, that i have a hard time believing, but with the new S6 there is a ATT remote app which unless you are root can not be turned off. With that said VPN is only way to hide the fact you are tethering but when you go from using a few gigs to a lot in a month they will know something is up. Do a search and you will see.
I have friends who tether all the time using their unlimited ATT data without getting any nasty grams. They don't use VPN's and just don't use crazy amounts of data. If you don't abuse the unlimited data and hide in plain sight, ATT won't bother you. VPN's are a great extra layer of protection when connecting to open public hotspots but they also make you stand out when "trying" to hide. The only person I know who has ever been busted for tethering was someone on a Verizon grandfathered unlimited plan because one month they used a stupid amount of data, over 50 Gig if I remember.

Sure if you go overboard it is obvious, the reality is you are violating the policy and ATT can and will cancel your unlimited. It has happened before and I'm sure they will do it again. Just do a simple search on here and you will see all the users who reported getting the letter. With regards to VPN, i disagree, i use VPN anytime I'm away from my home. I have my own VPN at home so I connect to my own vpn. Not using VPN on public wifi is just foolish.

After messing with my VPN connection I was able to connect to my VPN while also connected with FoxFi. Bad part was the download speed is even worse then my home speed. I guess I just won't go overboard when tethering.

There is overheard with VPN so it will be slower, you have to pay to play as they say.

Just my 2 cents, but you ever thought of using a t mobile rom? This way you wouldn't have to use second party apps for tethering. T-Mobile Alliance Lollipop Rom on ATT Note 3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/general/t-mobile-alliance-rom-att-note-3-t3065127 it has t mobile apps.
I can get native tethering working just used all my data trying to use my unlimited 4G now.wifi thether just gives me 10kbps speeds I don't really like lollipop why I'm on kitkat Idk if the room would make a difference or not.

Tethering on att unlimited plan

Hey everyone,
I have att unlimited plan for having directv.
As we all know it doesn't come with Hotspot.
So is their a rom that can by pass the apns on that?
Or an app I have to download that requires root?
Thanks so much.
I have been looking for feedback on this also
Have you tried foxfi or pdanet+ which has enabled tethering before.
