Chromecast adblock - Google Chromecast

Someone please make an ad block for Chromecast.

I dont think this would be possible if my understanding of how the chromecast works is correct. Once you cast things like youtube, the job of recieving the content is left to the chromecast, so youd need an app that would remove ads then cast that. Otherwise the only thing i could think of is if you made some kind of ad blocking proxy like what DD-WRT does and run your chromecast through that, quitr certain that needs a rooted chromecast though. Of course, an even better solution would be, at least in youtube's case, for google to fix the implementation of ads, at present the skip ad button is shown onthe tv screen, so you are forced to watch the sometimes 5 minute long ads. I may be completely incorrect in saying this, as i said, this is just from my understanding.

It appears YouTube adaway(xposed module) was just updated to do this, seems to have worked from my testing, cant fully confirm yet though.

Using the official youtube app on my Nexus 6, I'm getting frequent ads when watching youtube videos via chromecast. But now I've implemented an ad-blocker using a raspberry pi as an ad-blocking dns server (search for "pi-hole" if interested).

It appears to have started very recently. Every video I get a damn ad now. It's not related to the current version as I'm on v5. I don't use Xposed, so I guess I'm screwed.

I dont think you'd be unscrewed using xposed anyway, the update for the module didnt actually fix the ads, i got a 12 minute long ad the other day.

All the requests are SSL so you'd need to root your CC and set it to use the proxy. Also apparently YouTube adblock DOES work you just need an old YouTube version, so it would probably be easier to give that a shot as long as you're on with using an old version.

Okay. Thank you. I'll give an old version a try. On that note does anyone know how to make updates for apps not show up on the play store? There's a couple apps I like to stay on old version with for various reasons like this.

If I remember correctly you go to manage apps, all find the app you're hunting for click on it and it'll open app info
and just under force stop you should have the option to untick the checkmark for show notifications.
Hope it helps you

Hey guys, just noticed something, chromecast doesn't or rarely plays ads before a video that has low view count so if someone could spoof the nr. Of views the video actually has naybe chromecast would not think to play ads, anyways, just putting it out here

The reason for that is probably due to the fact that those videos are not from partnered channels, unless somethings changed recently ads only show on partnered channels.

So isn't there a way to spoof youtube into thinking all videos aren't partnered? Just brainstorming

Except that every individual would have to get Koush's app id whitelisted against their device via Google as well. At least if I have understood it correctly.

The way I understand is each person would have to get their device white listed with Google as a development device to use his app in it's current state and that Koush can't legally distribute the app to the publish unless it's approved by Google. I could be wrong. That's just my interpretation of the current guidelines.

This allows you to do it from your android device. Out of the box you can only use it with google play/netflix/ and youtube as of now with your phone. On your desktop you can share anything in your chrome web browser. More apps are coming.

Coming soon: Chromecast on CM...

Apparently, Koush has built in Chromecast functionality to CM, possibly for future release. Hopefully, similar mods can be made that will do the same for other ROMs...

Game. Changer.
Unless I understand it wrong, none of these 3rd party apps and tweaks are going to work for us (non-developers) until Google starts whitelisting apps. I think each app needs its own specific whitelisted key by Google in order to make an app talk to the Chromecast.

I fell into the same trap; I want to use an old tablet I have laying around as a chromecast receiver. While this isn't that, you kind of buried the lead: media from any app is castable, that is amazing.

I thought the Chromecast hardware had to be setup to be in 'developer mode', and then whitelisted by Google in order to even receive anything besides the default apps?

The function will be built into CM so you wont have to root the chromecast, now you have to unlock and root your device to install CM so as long as the build you install supports it you should be good to go.
This i want. Streaming netflix and YouTube from my tablet is awesome, but chromecast is pretty limited.

I don't really get the appeal of this. What's the point of casting something on one android device to another? Why not just play it on that device you are casting too? Of casting to an HDMI stick doesn't make sense, just play the video/ audio on the HDMI stick.

Casting Stops When Screen Off

Does anybody know why my tablet will always stop casting about 1 minute after the screen turns off? I thought it might be Wi-Fi sleep but it's disabled. I thought it might be Wi-Fi optimization but that's off. I've tested Pandora, Viki, and Songza so far. My phone does not have this issue and they have similar Wi-Fi profiles. I'm clueless.

Songza Dev said:
Hi there,
Thanks for writing in. This is a known issue that we are working to correct. Currently, the chromecast device has to check in with the phone to find out which song to play next. It turns out that chromecast is not built to handle this, so we are working on an implementation where the chromecast device can retrieve the next song without communicating with the phone. This is a significant change but we hope to have it out before too long.
For the time being, the best thing to do for maximum reliability is keep the app open in the foreground and the phone unlocked. We apologize for these current constraints and assure you that the constraints will go away once we move forward with the other implementation.
Thanks so much for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.
All the best,
Jordan

Here is the reply I got
Yea except I don't have the problem with my HTC One. My phone is left untouched for an hour and the music still keeps going. So his response is not 100% accurate in my opinion.
My guess is they are not doing this correctly...
If I'm not mistaken the best way to do what they are doing is to have the app send a player that will take control functions from the originating unit but gets everything else directly from the server.
They seem to be sending the audio and using the Phone as the player...
They should move to an indirect stream by sending a player not audio to Chromecast.
The Chromecast is not meant to send communication back just receive communication from the app that started the stream and you do that by sending a player app to the Chromecast that waits for input from the device but plays it's content directly from their servers.
I will point out however that his letter back to you seems to suggest they know this already and are working on it.
They just have to make an HTML5 Player that they can send and work out all the control functions.
That's a pretty big mistake..

Not really though because thats more how Miracast works and the Chromecast is very different.
Easy to see how some Dev could overlook the other better method.
And I'm not 100% sure I am describing it properly above...
I was under the impression that the apps like Netflix, Pandora and YouTube just send the player with a URL string to play and the rest is all done by chromecast. The player that gets sent then only communicates for Command signals.
From the looks of it, they have to revamp the entire system

Yes probably....
I bet the Majority of their support was written with the Advanced version of the SDK and now that they have the Official RC version from the Hackathon it will be easier to code it properly.
Seems a lot of apps who have added support did it this way as well.
The issues is some HAD to because they didn't have a server to work with (Like aVia) but things like Pandora and Songza should have gone the YouTube and Netflix route to streaming.
And if they don't someone else will! LOL So I expect they will figure it out in the end.

I prefer using https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway ... AdFree is nice but blocks a lot of the Slickdeals links for me, yeah theres whitelisting but Slickdeals has a lot of redirecting links whereas AdAway is less aggressive on that part and gets most of the ads.
I see @simms22 finally got his N6

Out of curiosity, can you run an adblocker (like adaway), have it modify the hostfile, then unroot and still have ads blocked? Or do you need to keep root for the changes to remain in effect?

Chromecast and netflix (vpn?)

I want to use a chromecast for watching netflix from other regions.
Is there any way besides using a vpn router to get this working?
The short answer is Yes, but you should just use the forum search function - there are a couple of long threads on this topic. Unfortunately the situation is changing lately as Netflix has been updating their app to make things more difficult, and you have to handle both the Chromecast Netflix app and the Android/iOS Netflix app you are using for casting. Check the latest posts in those threads for up-to-date-information on what's currently working and what isn't.
