**Disclaimer** If you don't understand what follows, don't attempt this. I'm not responsible for you softbricking your device,
This is a quick guide for how to install the new android without losing anything. You'll need fastboot for this. Also, before doing this, be sure to download the supersu cwm update zip, and have it on your sdcard. Make sure you also already have a custom recovery installed (I did twrp, but i'm sure cwm will work just as well). I would also suggest having a backup done, through titanium backup and through recovery, just incase.
First, download the factory images for the n7 from google's website. Decompress them (if you're in windows, you'll need winrar or something similar.) After you decompress the archive, there'll be another one inside (image-nakasi-jop40c.zip), decompress this one as well. Under here, you'll see the .img files for all the partitions. For now, go up one directory. You'll also see here bootloader-grouper-4.13.img. Once you have all this, reboot into the bootloader.
Once you're in the bootloader, you can update the bootloader to the new version (this step isn't needed, but I did it anyways). Plug into your pc, and type fastboot devices. Make sure it's not blank. If it is, you have to update drivers. If you can see the device, open up a command prompt, and cd to the directory that has the bootloader-grouper file. Type the following:
fastboot flash bootloader-grouper-4.13.img
then, after it's done, type:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now, you'll be booted back into the bootloader, it'll say 4.13. On to the rom.
cd into the folder image-nakasi-jop40c (make sure you see the files system.img and boot.img before you continue. If you don't see them, the next steps will do nothing but erase your kernel and system parition.)
now, you see the image files. Type the following (still in the bootloader)
fastboot erase system
fastboot flash system system.img
wait until it completes, then type:
fastboot erase boot
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Once this is done, hit the volume up on the device until it shows recovery mode on the top. When it does, push the power key and you'll boot into your recovery (shouldn't be touched.) Inside here, flash the supersu cwm zip file, which'll flash the superuser binary, and supersu. Once this is done, do a factory reset (removing your data and cache.) Boot into the rom.
Once it's booted, you'll notice your internal sd card appears to be empty (mine did, I was worried at first.) For some odd reason, it moved the entire contents of my sdcard into a folder on it called 0. When you get back into android, simply move the folder all up one level so they're in the proper place. You now have the rom booted, rooted, with all your data. Now, you can do a titanium restore to get all your stuff back.
My first boot got stuck for some reason. if it happens to you, just hold the power button and hard reboot. (I did this on 2 devices, it only happened to one of them, so I figured I'd give you all warning.)

I flashed the 4.2 ota in the dev section and I lost root. Can I just flash the supersu binary in cwm to regain root?
Thanks for this.. Apparently you found out too a clean 4.2 isn't rootable via typical methods.
That SuperSU package did the trick. I have to remember to keep a SuperSU binary on hand for these kinds of situations that SuperUser fails..

Yes. If you do it though cwm, you're not using any exploits, you're just inserting the superuser binary and supersu.apk into the proper places on the rom. On any nexus device, any rom, this will root it.

Exactly.
If everything goes right we should have an AOSP prerooted build in about *looks at watch* 20 minutes.... Unless there is a compile error or SU error. *laff*

Just got this working on a mac...
did not update bootloader(couldnt get it to)
other than that, same commands except all fastboots are ./fastboot on a mac
the only other trick is i needed the fastboot and abd files in the jop40c folder...seems to have worked like a charm....im deff on 4.2 with su installed... and it looks like my data is still there...once google is done restoring i'll know just how sucessfull it is, but so far, seems to work!!!

I did this all on linux, just kind of adapted the guide for windows. I figured all the linux users would understand how to do it on their own. Glad to know it's the same for mac as well.

Settings - about tablet - build number
push it a few times and it will enable dev options
You have .bat file in the package.
Why so complicated?
I downloaded 4.2 from here:
http://android.clients.google.com/p...gned-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zipia
I then just flashed it from recovery via CWM.
Done.
CWM asked me if I wanted to maintain root and of course I chose the correct answer on this, so now my N7 is running on a rooted 4.2.
Here is my method:
1. Download official 4.1.2 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929270 and 4.2 OTA image from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989188
2. Boot into CWM (i have CWM touch installed)
3. Clear data and install 4.1.2, don't forget to turn on root in the installer
4. reboot check that root is fully working
5. reboot into recovery install 4.2
6. before reboot CWM will ask to disable recovery flash and protect root. Ansver yes to both questions
I'm confused, it says if you are already on a custom rom, just flash as usual.
What makes this different?
I was on stock ROM rooted with some system modifications, and this wwadd the only way I could get the update working...

So I'm at the step listed above. I have 4.2 on my device but I can't seem to find this "0" folder. I'm browsing the /sdcard folder via adb shell. Am I looking at the wrong place? Do I have have the incorrect permissions? Or might it not be there?
Thanks.
Ill have to wait until a rooted rom is created, I have no comp.

Not advisable to move this folder - if it got moved to a new location by the o/s then there's probably a good reason why - maybe like 4.2 introducing multiple users
Each user appears to get their own "home" directory created in /mnt/shell/emulated/
Default user dir is "0"
Second user dir is "10"
Each contain the standard dir's from 4.1 and earlier.

You had two extra characters at the end of your link, but I fixed it above and it's good to go for others in the future. Just flashed it in TWRP, it didn't ask if I wanted to maintain root, hit reboot when it was complete and lost root, so it doesn't work for everyone - good news is that all my data remained intact without having to resort to advanced restoring my data from a backup....
When I tried the SuperSU binary root flash trick, I finally got root back. But don't think it's as easy to get to recovery! I had to obtain the TWRP Recovery one more time since it wiped it and put in place a recovery that did absolutely nothing but reboot the device after a few minutes, so you'll have to
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-grouper.img
to get TWRP back.... Hope that helped everyone!
Hello,
I've unlocked the bootloader on my One, then proceeded to install supersu via zip through clockworkmod recovery.
I rebooted, attempted to gain root access, and was unable to.
I then rebooted into clockworkmod recovery and attempted to install superuser from this thread, rebooted and was unable to gain root. I then installed supersu from the same thread, and was unable to gain root.
Lastly, I attempted to wipe the cache partition and dalvik cache in effort, and still I am not able to gain root.
I'm unsure exactly what to do from here on out, as the process is truly very simple, but just not working.
Should I flash an official recovery and start over?
Thanks,
Matt
Have you opened the su app and updated the binaries?
I used twrp recovery a few days ago when I rooted. try to flash latest version of twrp through adb and wipe, clear cache, and retry.
If you still have trouble, check out wwjoshdew on youtube. I followed his instructions and rooted/unlocked with no hiccups.

Thanks for replying quickly.
The state I'm in now is:
- The SuperSu apk is gone.
- Superuser is installed.
- Root Checker, Helium, ES File Explorer's "root explorer" report no root
- Shark reports root (aka starts).
- superuser info reports `su` 3.2.18
- Used ES File Explorer to verify presence of `/system/bin/su`
Any idea on what could be wrong?
Thanks again,
Matt
How about another try on TWRP 2.6.3.0 recovery?
Sure, I will try this, Originally I tried TWRP, but couldn't access my internal storage (don't know why). Attempted sideload and failed, so I install clockwork and was able to install superuser.zip from /sdcard/.
Thanks!
Grabbed TWRP 2.3.6.0 from: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/m7wls/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-m7wls.img
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-m7.img
> REBOOT BOOTLOADER
> BOOTLOADER
> RECOVERY
I then located the SuperSu zip and installed. Now I receive "There is no SU binary installed and SuperSu cannot install it. This is a problem!"
Rebooted into recovery and installed SuperUser.
Rebooted the system and attempted to access SuperUser, and it works. Verifies the presence of `/system/bin/su`.
Accessing helium and I don't have root.
So what do I do from here?
(sorry didn't brick my phone)

I would suggest using it as it is updated more often then superuser as far as I know
Thanks,

I just got the One and just performed the OTA update the other day, so I am on 4.3. I bet this is what the "problem" was! So the updated SuperSU must be compatible with 4.3.

Hi guys, I've been using TWRP for a long time, but this one is a bit of a head-scratcher for me. I'm running stock Android MMB29S on my N6, unlocked bootloader, and unrooted. I decided to install TWRP 2.8.7.1 and then root it with Beta supersu 2.66. The fastboot flashing of TWRP went fine the first time, and I opted to leave TWRP read-only. But I didn't install supersu right afterwards. Rather, I rebooted into system first, and downloaded supersu. When I attempted to reboot into recovery again to flash supersu, I'm finding out that stock recovery has overwritten TWRP. Ok, no problem, I re-flashed TWRP, but this time I allowed it to modify the system (instead of read-only). Now, I'm unable to see anything under /sdcard or any of the other folders when I go to flash the zip. Under the "Mount" Menu, I see that only "cache" is checked. Didn't want to mess with anything there.
Rebooting into system now gives me the "Your device is corrupted..." spiel, which I'm not concerned about, but I really do need to be able to see files in TWRP. Would re-installing TWRP be an option or even a different version of it?
mount system. if its still empty after that, use twrp to locate the right place in the filesystem. yes, like a file explorer app twrp can act
The solution to my problem was actually as simple as just removing the lockscreen passcode. I was wondering why TWRP was asking for that in the first place. Once I removed the lockscreen PIN and went back into TWRP I was able to see all the files. Happily rooted now. :good:
After unlocking the bootloader, installing TWRP recovery and rooting my phone with SuperSU (v2.82), I was preparing to install a custom ROM (more specifically the Resurrection Remix 7.1.2.) all in all, things ended up going out of hand and I accidentally deleted my internal storage, losing every single bit of my existing ROM, not to mention the RR ROM file as well. Now when I try to wipe, I can't, it usually says "Failed to mount '/data' (Device or resource busy) and "Unable to mount storage".
I tried using ADB sideload but to no success, only the same message. What I can understand is that the previous data is gone, I tried changing the format of data, system and cache to FAT & exFAT but it still did not resolve my issue.
I'm out of options here, I don't want to have to give up this phone because of my stupidity.
I also tried flashing the LineageOS 14.1 ROM to see if anything was different, here is what it said:
Installing zip file '/sideload.package.zip'
Target: HUAWEI/EVA-L09/HWEVA:7.0/HUAWEIEVA-L09/C432B361:user/release-keys
detected filesystem ext4 for /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system
detected filesystem exfat for /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/userdata
mount: failed to mount /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/userdata at /data: Device or resource busy
unmount of /data failed; no such volume
Patching system image unconditionally...
detected filesystem ext4 for /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system
Script succeeded: result was [1.000000]
Although it said succeeded it clearly did not work and I am sitting without a ROM. I'm not smart when it comes to these things please help a guy out.
(Is there a way to going back to completely stock EMUI 5.0?)
Cheers.
EMUI 5.01 requires encryption, which you obviously removed.
Search for DC Unlocker, it can probably fix it for 25 Euros

I'm terribly sorry for being THIS stupid. As I'm looking into this even more, I'm conflicted about the credit amount I need, been scrolling through the list and I can't really find my problem involving firmware I suppose.

I'm not educated about DC Unlocker but that is NOT neccesary here. You can easily repair the /data partition by flashing the stock recovery via fastboot, formatting data with that stock recovery and then flashing TWRP again. After that TWRP should be able to read the data partition again.
You can easily go back to stock completely and even restore your bootloader by doing a "rollback" to Android 6. (dload method). After that you can normally upgrade from there though EMUI to the latest version of stock.

UPDATE: I flashed the stock recovery image and it showed me the wipe cache partition and factory data and system reset, I tried both, only the cache one succeeded, the other one failed. I saw a post that directed you to flash boot.img, recovery.img, recovery2.img and then system.img, I did that, but I couldn't boot into my phone - the good thing is however! That I can use my touchscreen in the recovery now.
Obviously the second time booting into EMUI recovery it prompts me to 'Download latest version and recovery', I try to connect to my Wi-Fi, seems okay but then it suddenly fails. More specifically it says 'Getting package info failed'. Save me please :crying:
So this "erecovery" never worked in any way for me (the one which offers you to download the latest version).
Instead you need the normal recovery you already used. Formatting failed for me the first time too, try it again and then it will try to format "low-level" which worked for me.
Go directly into fastboot from that, flash TWRP and go directly into TWRP.
After that should be able to use /data in TWRP. As soon as you are able to start TWRP without any error messages (like "Device busy" or something) go to Wipe and then format data.
Important: check which partition type you have! For EMUI you need "f2fs" and for lineage you need "ext4". You can see and change that in TWRP under Wipe -> "change or repair filesystem".
If you have any more questions, just ask.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, when I try to boot in it's just stuck on a boot loop. Unfortunate..
Remember that you have to what *a while* for the first boot. Only if you see no change after 5-8 minutes or so something is definitely wrong.
Have you checked in TWRP if your /data partition is ext4?

Have you checked in TWRP if your /data partition is ext4?

I know, but it was flashing the Huawei logo and the unlocked bootloader warning continuously. It was set on EXT4 but as I was saying, it said script succeeded at 50%.

That just said that /system partition is ext4. That is default even for stock I believe. You need to check for /data.

I deliberately set the data partition to EXT4 before installing

Can you check in TWRP if it actually says /data is ext4?
Which lineage are you trying to install? Don't you need a vendor.zip for some of them?
/data is indeed on EXT4, and I was installing the one that was on the room section.
Thanks to @seadersn and @SGCMarkus, Markus's new TWRP makes things extremely simple now.
What you need:SGCMarkus's TWRP
fstab.judypn with forceencrypt set to encryptable.
magisk
and the .magisk file
Instructions:
1. Follow the instructions to boot and install TWRP on SGCMarkus's TWRP thread
2. While you're still in TWRP, mount vendor and push the fstab.judypn with:
Code:
adb push path/to/fstab.judypn /vendor/etc
3. Format data via TWRP.
4. Push the .magisk to /data (For dm-verity reasons. It will restore the fstab.judypn with forceencrypt enabled) with:
Code:
adb push path/to/.magisk /data
5. Flash Magisk.
You're done! No bootloops this time. XD
i want to try this at some point. When i did before, the screen was black. Thanks for the guide!

Flash the magiskpatched boot img included in the files
I just had my bootloader unlocked. I am trying to install TWRP, but if I flash stockpiemagisk.img or TWRP-judypn-2019-07-01.img then use the buttons to choose a factory reset I just get bootloops. I select yes both times, just like normal and it loops until going to a fastboot screen. I can then flash the original magisk_patched.img I got from the guy who unlocked my bl, but no TWRP. Even he wasn't sure why this is happening. Any ideas anyone?
Also, in case its related, I lost download mode and can't get that back even by flashing an original backup of laf_b or the lgup compatible laf. I had download mode and flashed Pie before the bl unlock...
Edit: I got download mode back. Turns out when he was unlocking the bootloader he flashed abl_b incorrectly. Once I flashed it correctly DL mode works... Now for TWRP...
NVM.... found the problem...
I have an issue. After clearing the userdata procedure, this attached images is what I get. It's a reddish boot-up screen. The Active Slot also defaulted to B (as opposed to A). I have a fastboot-loop. I am wondering where I went wrong. I completed a successful procedure on another device hours ago. LGUP does not function as well. The phone defaults to Fastboot.
I am able to get to TWRP but the fastboot-loop has changed. The image attached is what I get. I suppose in my attempt to remedy, the wrong Laf files have been flashed. It's V405UA20a
Hello mister
Actually is it possible to flash this stockpie.img on a V406EBW ?
Regards
Fred

I have exactly the situation you described (fastboot loop + pink letters screen when I try to get into DL mode). If you've managed to rectify this, can you please give me directions. Thanks.

Hi - I eventually lost root and the system factory-reset after an attempt to boot into TWRP. I have scheduled to have VLAD reflash the entire phone. My bootloader is unlocked though but don't think much can be done. There might be other variables that might be affected.
If there is a guide to using Octoplus, it will be appreciated. It also seems telegram is the new medium for development.

All the best.
will try out to follow up this info
When I follow step 3 "Format data via TWRP", at the end of the format it says:
"Updating partition details...
...done
Full SELinux support is present.
WTP Enabled
Formatting Data using mke2fs...
Done.
You may need to reboot recovery to be able to use /
data again.
Updating partition details...
...done
UNABLE TO MOUNT STORAGE, DECRYPTION NEEDED FIRST"
I don't think that's good... Or is it?
Please Clarify/Help
I have managed to get TWRP installed and working but did not notice to do this. I went ahead and used Android already only to find that I need to do this.
I have booted into TWRP but cannot select vendor to mount it. Everything except system and vendor (and USB-OTG because there is not attached) will let me check them. But not vendor.
Do I have to go all the way back and re-install TWRP and to this before I do ANYTHING else? Do I have to do this while I am still in TWRP loaded from the image on my PC?
I realize this will loose all I have done within Android and that is the price I pay for not reading in detail. But I want to make sure this is the last time.
Thanks!
Not What I Expected - Decryption Failed!
I went ahead and re-installed TWRP from fastboot per the Markus thread After rebooting back into TWRP I then followed instructions in the 1st post here.
I could not mount vendor but I saw messages saying it was busy. So I assumed it was not unmounted and went ahead with the push to /vendor/etc. It reported successful from adb. And in TWRP file manager I can see a file named /vendor/etc and in the terminal I can cat its contents which look like what I see on my PC.
I then wiped the /data only using advanced wipe and it used makefs, not format.
I then pushed .magisk to /data and it too reported successful from adb.
I then flashed magisk and that seemed successful as well. Inside to TWRP's file manager, I was able to see the .magisk and various folders under /data. This seemed promising enough.
I finally rebooted to system and got shown what is in the attached screenshot. At that point, I had no option but to agree to the reset. When I touched that button, I was returned to TWRP. So I powered off from TWRP and tried to restart the phone. Once again I get the same decryption unsuccessful.
So I seem to be in a TWRP loop. How to proceed? Thanks

Well, as they say, if at first... I went through the steps here again. I made sure I hit the format button instead of wipe. And I made triple sure that everything was where it seemed to need to be and looked right. When I finally rebooted to system, I am now in Android setup as expected. To see if there is still encryption (ie, TWRP can see and backup /data) remains to be seen. Cheers

Sadly, once finished with a minimal Android setup I went back into TWRP and /data shows nothing. In backing up, it shows /data as 0 bytes. So I presume this means I am still encrypted. Is there no way out of this hell? Thanks

Here's the thing I would try. Load up LGUP and reload a stock kdz. Make sure that before you begin futzing with the phone, you are booting from Slot A.
Then retrace all the steps carefully. And don't set up anything on the phone until you have reached nirvana (bootloader unlocked, unencrypted, Magisk installed).
You'll get there.
