Hi everybody,
I am used to assign separate ringtones stored on my SD card in mp3 format. After upgrade to 5.1.1 the phone ignores the settings and uses the main ringing tone. Tried to copy to internal memory, same same.. Anyone has an idea or it is a bug?
Thanks
Michael

yes it is! I think it is a big big bug!!!
really? was just about to upgrade..
can anybody else confirm this?
I am on 5.1.1 (D5803 nordic) and have a mp3 ringtone mounted from the SD card... So the bug is not everywhere.
The bug persists in security mode too!

I am currently using an MP3 as my ringtone. I am using the customised Brazil firmware.
same here mp3 from ext sdcard perfectly working
bug solved!!! to assign an mp3 ringtone to a specific contact, you have to put it ( the mp3) into internal sd card. If you put into ext sd will not run, neither using folder mount.

Sorry mate, I just set an MP3 as a ringtone for a specific contact and tested it with the file on both internal and external storage, it worked perfectly both times.
While I'm not saying that you didn't experience a problem or that moving the file to internal storage isnt an effective work around, I'm just not sure we can claim this as a bug as it doesn't seem to be repeatable at the moment.
Good, but did you delete the mp3 from the previous position or you have copied the file?

Personal ringtone bug
Surely there is a problem assigning personal ringtones from the SD card in Lollipop 5.1.1. Here is what I have found so far. If you choose an mp3 from the SD card as a deault ringtone it works fine. But should you try to assign a personal mp3 ringtone taken from the SD it just doesn't work. The phone keeps playing the default ringtone you have chosen (even if it is taken form SD card). If you move all mp3 ringtones in the internal memory of the phone the problem with assigning personal ringtones is solved. There must be some bug concerning remembering the path to the SD files. Strange as it is the ringtones on the SD card appear in the list of ringtones when you try to assign them. The phone even remembers what you have set. It just doesn't play it when the person rings. I will try a reset via PC Companion. Hope the bug will be gone!

Once my girlfriend gets home and I can use her phone to call mine I will test the scenarios your mentioned to try to duplicate your results.
I'm not sure if resetting with pc companion will help though, it will simply reflash the firmware again bugs and all.
If we have infact found a bug, either we will have to define the problem and hope someone clever can fix it with an xposed module or something similar , find a work around, or report it to Sony and wait for an official fix.
And seeing as the problem can be avoided by simply storing the files on the internal storage, I doubt Sony will invest too much time

Yes it is so. I think the main ringtone works everywhere you choose, because the system does a copy in the system folder. But not for the contacts assigned ringtones.

I can confirm the problem as it has been described.
So it's replicatable. we can call it a bug now I guess
Confirm same problem on my D6603 affter upgrade on 5.1.1
Hi. I have a xperia z1. After an update to 5.1.1 i can't set difrent ringtones for diferent contacts

so... I'm having a problem.
Every time I add new music to my Captivate, it screws up my ringtones. I'm using whoisit lite to manage them, but it is useless. even its backup get screwed up.
I found this thread where the dude has a similar problem, but mine does not go back to default. they all change to a random music. but no one there posted a solution.
so i'm asking it here: how do I fix this? which app do i have to download to make sure my ringtones won't change every time I add new tunes?
I've had this issue on stock ROMs before as well. It happens because the phone unmounts the sd cards when you put them in mass media mode, so it can't see your custom ringers anymore. I don't know why they get reset sometimes though and not others. Some ROMs did it to me, some didn't, and I don't have a good answer as to the rhyme or reason.
If you're rooted, you can copy your current ringers into system / media / audio / ringtones and they'll stay put (because they won't unmount anymore), but I don't have a great answer for you otherwise.
Does it do it with the stock ringtone picker as well, or just the one you downloaded?
Stock picker have this bug as well. which is why I downloaded whoislite in the first place.
I just downloaded Locale, which handles the contacts ringtones, but does not work with the alarms. but might solve at least 70% of the problem. doing some test right now.
I'm using Andromeda rom, BTW (not sure if its the current or not, tough)
Hello,
perhaps someone has an idea and can help:
when i select an individual ringtone to one of my contacts it does not fit. If he is calling it always plays the standard/default ringtone from the settings.
I tried tonepicker and winamp but didn't help. I shows me the selected individual mp3 file in the contact setting, but doesn't play it when he is calling.....
Many thanks and regards
Rod
Look in your SD card for a folder called ringtones.if it doesn't exist create a folder called ringtones.now copy your mp3 tunes to that folder and they should appear when u select a ringtone under contact
many thanks for your replay...but the folder already exists and i can select the mp3 in and for the contact but, if he is calling me, the standard/default ringtone will be played :-(

this function works for me, all I can recommend is backup your important infomation. then reset the phone and see if the issue still exists.
its an extreme fix but its essentially the next level of "turn it off and on again"
hope this helps.
ok thanks a lot think i will try it as you said.....there is also a brand new version of my rom available since a couple of minutes so this is a good chance to reset everything an install it new
First try to change the default ringtone in settings/sound/ringtone.then return to contact and set the ringtone again.still not working try reboot and do it again...if this doesn't work.then a factory reset is necessary.
I tried again to set the ringtones to default. Select one mp3 again as an individual tone, restarted, set permissions, wiped in CWM.....but no success...
Because a new romversion, i wiped and formated everything again anyways and installed the new rom. But also with this action: the selected individual ringtone in the contact does not play when he is calling...
Think its rom related, and its not a big problem, i don't care.....think i will try an other ics perhaps next week, then i will report again whether its working with other rom on my S1
regards
Rod
Okay. My last suggestion.download a music player(eg. Poweramp or playerpro) and change the default ringtone and reboot, then try set contact ringtone again.
PS. Did u copy/paste your music mp3 files to the ringtone folder on your sd-card.
many many thanks for your efforts!
I tried it with poweramp and with tonepicker....yes i have it on the internal sd card in ringtones folder....a few minutes ago i tried it with an other contact again, because in the past i always used the same contact and phonenumber, so i thought perhaps the contact was corruped....but alos no success...
As i said no big thing for me, perhaps when i have time i will deinstall the stock contact app and the phone apk and change to an other app. Perhaps this give some changes . Many thanks again.
Soo here are some news .....yesterday i tried it with the new updated version of the installed ROM, but no success, even the same, can chose a different ringtone, but its not playing....(did all wipes and formats before flashing the update)
Today i installed an other based ROM complete new (also different Kernel), and after selection the individual ringtone? it works like it should.....!
Hello, i tried several ICS rom which i like bettet then the JB ones, but i see that with all ICS roms i have the same problem of double entries with all the sounds files like alarm, ringtone and notifications.
for example: i have a ringtone called sea breaze and it is showing twice in the ringtone list when i want to change the ringtone in settings->sound->phone ringtone.
the same happens with my alarms and notifications.
i cant seem to work this one out, can anyone suggest a solution for this problem?
Thanks for the help

I tried it and no go. Few of the ringtone seems to apear three times. I tried deleting android/data storage and media folders as well and still nothing.
I think this thing is getting on my nerves.
Can it be something to do with ringtone files themselves??? i took those files from JB version and copied them to my device. I noticed that my old ringtones appear only once, but those i took from jellybean appear twice, maybe this cause the duplicates??

delete all ringtones from system media audio ringtones , reboot , move ringtones to folder again , reboot and check again
But there is no prob with copy/paste or something in the file manager you use??? and you don`t have copied the files so sdcard or something ...
the sounds are only available in the folder "system" and no where else ...
Works the 2nd idea of "The Tox" ???

The sounds were only on internal sdcard. But I think I solved it by moving all the sounds to system/media. And change permissions of the files.
On other ICS roms it didn't matter if I leave my new sounds on internal sd , as long as I don't keep the same ones as in system/media folder.
On this rom I had to try anything even tho the sounds i added were not the same as the original from the rom sounds and were only placed on internal SD.
Never mind that. Thanks for your help guys. This problem I think is solved. I will try the same trick on alarms swell and report the results.
Thanks guys

Okay thx for Info!
Only for me as an info: Could the permission be the problem ??? Not only the moving to system/media???

i really dont know, i tried so many things to solve the problem, so im not sure if the permission had any effect or not, the only thing i do know is that the ringtones now are ok, but the alarm still appear with duplicated files.
since i moving my home to a different city and im packing and a bit busy, so i dont have much time in the next few days to test this again. so for now until friday night i wont be able to play with that thing again and test what maybe the solution.
Okay so when you have time for testing, i`m interested in some infos, when available ...:good:

Hello,
I've uploaded a couple of mp3 files to use as notification sounds for gmail and my email client. I placed them in the ringtones folder on my internal sdcard, like I always do with my Nexus 4 (which always works). However on my One m7 they are not showing up in the list of sounds.
Does Sense 6 require they be placed in the system or should they be read on the sdcard as I am a bit stumped by this?
Thanks.

Do you have the files in the right format? They should be .ogg files.
Oh right, I assumed like aosp they would read mp3 too.
Ps. Tried converting the mp3 to ogg, still not showing up in the list.

Mine are in the Ringtones folder on the sdcard. Did you reboot your phone after placing them there? You also might check in /data/media/0/Ringtones.
On selecting a custom ringtone from the sd card, on the next reboot or so the ringtone changes to an Unknown ringtone . Not able to figure out why. I tried using different formats, smaller file size but after a while it reverts back to the unknown ringtone. Facing this issue after the update to lollipop.
Anybody else facing the same issue?
S mee to face tat issue for the past week automatically it changes to unknown ringtone

Found a workaround for the ringtone issue. Seems that lollipop has trouble accessing the sd card at times during an incoming call so it reverts to the unknown ringtone. To solve this convert the ringtone to ogg format and place the ringtone file in the internal storage of phone at this location /system/media/audio/ringtones. Your phone needs to be rooted to be able write to internal storage. After placing the file restart the phone and you should be able to see the ringtone in the selection list.
The dialer is indeed slow ..I switched to another dialer from the market. As for the other issues (battery, sync etc) I suggest you perform a factory reset. The migration from kitkat to lollipop messed up many apps.
DId you update through OTA or manually from the captured updates from the forum?
i updated through OTA
i made a factory reset for two times
cleared wipe cache n partition in recovery more than 4 times
all cleared in every possible way
nothing changed
i used multi window and exdialer pro stil no home it shows sonetimes when v r in need or hurry it shows unfortunately stopped error
already i hv my ringtone ogg format eventhough it work for 3 to 4 days and its back the game of unknown ringtone and im not rooted though( gonna check in root as ur word)
i updated all gapps through play store and download other apps from google which is of lollipop compatible
sometimes i get google play service error after the update of 7.0.99..
Hello, i'm currently facing the same issue.
I tried to select my ringtone with the ES media player (since yesterday) and it seems to work for the moment.

not any more, because i already solved this problem :
1. do not save custom ringtones or the other tones in system/media/ringtones
2. save the custom ringtones folder in internal memory
3. you can use mp3 or ogg file for custom ringtone
i hope this will help you
same issue
Hi Guys,
Facing the same issue, not even resolved by the internal memory.
Whatever ringtone i select (from the default ones), it changes to unknown somehow. I don't know how and why.
There is also a strange thing, whenever the ringtone changes to unknown, the media from gallery also disappear (my photos and videos)
Please help.
This is driving me nuts.
Already tried:
1. placing in internal memory, restarting.
2.no custom mp3 tones, only default ogg
3. device is rooted.

are you already try this :
1. create a folder and name it with ringtones
2. place custom ringtones in this folder (.mp3 or .ogg)
3. place the folder in internal memory ( /0 or /1 ) not in / system/media/
4. change your default ringtones setting with your custom ringtones
5. reboot
it work for me..
note : folder name should be lower case and always name it with ringtones for ringtones or alarms for alarmtones , etc.
I also witnessed unknown ringtone in lollipop. But I actually liked it and I want to download it. Is there any way to download that unknown ringtone. It is one of the best ringtones I have come across. It rings like ting....ting.....ting...... Any suggestions on how to download that unknown system ringtone in android lollipop would be highly appreciated.
