XSP won't charge or boot - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I am stuck with a phone that won't boot, charge, or be detected by flashtool (or windows) and will not boot in flashmode/fastboot either.
I had plugged in the phone for charging when the battery was considerably low ~ 5-10% before I went to sleep. I remember the red LED glowing, meaning the phone must've been charging.
The next morning I check the phone, the LED was STILL red and the handset was kind of dead - no response at all, whatsoever. Even the reset button on the bacl panel doesn't work (no vibration).
The phone was running BlissPop (5.1.1) with Tangerine kernel.
Now when I plug in the phone for charging, nothing happens at all, not even the red LED. The LED does glow red for as long as I press and hold the power button while it is plugged in (both PC and wall outlet)
I took it to the service center; they say they'll have to change the motherboard. Obviously the phone is not in warranty and there is no way I can pay 10,000 INR that Sony is demanding for the job.
Someone somewhere in the forums suggested allowing the battery to drain completely, but I don't think my battery is holding any charge.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks

1. Press and hold the reset button for 8 seconds and check if it vibrates. Now plug in charger as there is a possibility that phone is not booting because of insufficient charge.
2. Charge for atleast 20 min without switching on phone.
3. Make sure flashtool is installed properly and so as drivers.
4. Flash Stock ftf
If the above didnt work then try Fastboot mode and simply flash Tangerine kernel.
If nothing works, then its an hardware issue and there is no point in spending 10k in repairing.
Get yourself a brand new Moto G or yureka.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717303 <- this guy had a pretty similar problem and managed to fix it
I was following the steps he provided: i plugged the phone to PC and held the power button pressed. Surprisingly the PC did recognize the phone after a while- but it was only momentarily and the red LED also stopped glowing. Unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce a similar situation after that.

bump!

[Q] Bricked SP

Hi everyone.
My SP doesn't want to turn on anymore for a unknown reason. When plugging it to the pc\charger the red led appears and then disappears. Non of the tips (power + vol. plus, power + vol. minus) doesn't work.
Please, help. If your suggestion will help, I'll pay you.
put it into charger and leave it charging for like 1-2 hours, also remove sim and sd card

How did this happen?? Try this pull out the back panel and press the reset button with a pin and hold the power button and see what happens
Also you may try this install Sony PC companion This will install all the correct drivers for the phone then take usb cord Holding volume Down And Plug it to the phone. If all goes well the led at the bottom should glow green
I had a similar issue and after 4 days of trying all what i could find out in XDA for bricked Xperia phones my SP is back alive.
For me it happened during flashing (with Flashtool 0.9.11) the stock firmware .257 with to less battery power.
Short Info to my phone when it happened
Sony Xperia SP C5303
Kernel: Dooms v01 (i do not think that this was the problem!)
Bootloader: unlocked
Stock firmware from C5302 version .284
System: deodexed and rooted
When i say flashing i did it always with flashtool because PC Companion and SUS did not recognize my phone at all (with locked bootloader).
My SP was behaving as following.
- When i put the wall charger on the phone nothing happened no lights nothing same if plugged in to the computer.
- If i pressed the power button unconnected the LED flashed red 3 times all the time,
after a while nothing happened anymore (which gave me the indication that the battery is completely empty)
- If i pressed the power button continuous during charging (wall/computer) the red light turned on until i released the power button.
When pressing the Power button long enough during i was connected to the computer the green light turned on and i was in flash mode.
But only for maximum 2 min. This was enough to flash all firmware parts except the system.sin (at ~80 % phone disconnected).
And this was the problem my SP stayed dead.
Before someone asks, standard connecting while pressing the volume down for flash mode or volume up for fastboot mode didn't work.
Now i tryed all:
- Left the phone on the wall charger without doing anything -> nothing
- Left the phone on the computer without doing anything -> nothing
- Left the phone on the wall charger/computer while pressing the power button continuous (did it with a tape) -> nothing except that it went in flash mode and red light again all the time
Now my last try (i was reading this in an X10 thread):
I plugged the phone more than 7 hours to the computer while pressing the volume down button continuously (again taped).
Next morning it first looked like that this also did not work.
But as i disconnected the phone from the computer and plugged in again the red light stayed on.
Ok give it a try i thought and i put the phone to my wall charger for 1 hour or so also here the red light was glowing continuous now.
And yeah i could connect the phone to the computer in the normal way volume down than usb and i was in flash mode.
I was now able to flash the complete stock firmware. After again putting the phone to the wall charger for 1 hour the system was booting :victory: .
And now i saw the problem battery charge in status bar showed 1 % but the firmware start up check showed 55 % .
I remember that i did wipe the battery stats in recovery before all that happened.
No idea if this caused the problem.
However i could now charge my phone and it is still alive relocked and on stock.
Hope this helped and good luck.
To prevent other people from this bad situation i tried to remember exactly what caused the drain of the battery to 0%.
Battery was on 25% at start. (I know this was stupid, i was too impatient as dooms v16 and cwm for locked bootloaders were released :silly
1.I started with trying to update my mobile to stock with PC Companion and SUS,
without thinking about that this will not work with unlocked bootloader. -> first battery drain
2. Got stock FTF for .257 (c5303) and wanted to flash it which did not work got errors always.
My SP was connected flashmode on my notebook a long time while i was trying to fix that (reading XDA, driver config etc).
Several times tried to flash without success.
-> drain, drain and more battery drain not thinking about that i started with only 25%.
3. Gave up on my notebook and connected my phone to the Desktop PC (here the config was ok i knew that from flashing before on that computer).
Meanwhile i assume that my battery was already close to completely empty.
As the flash of the FTF (all parts) started my phone turned off and was "dead", i do not remember on which sin it turned off.
The whole time 1. 2. 3. i never booted i always stayed disconnected or in flashmode.
And than the mess began which i posted in my previous post.
So my SP is officially dead. Need to replace to motherboard.

You should keep pressing that button till your phone's screen goes black and vibrates 3 times if it doesn't do that then either the mobo is dead or the button is broken!
well... that's why I kinda hate sony why not do like most makes do (Like iphone, htc, samsung etc just long press the power button to reset the damn thing! It gets really annoying to keep pulling my case and back cover off and then putting a pencil in that tiny hole in public :/)

had the same problem with mines ( i manage to record this fading logo part )
hours later after the record my phone won't even turn on and it only shows that red light popping up when i press the power button
i brought it to sony's service center here and they replaced the battery, that managed to fix it <3
For me pressing the back off button and volume + button force it to fastboot mode. From there just flash a kernel and it is fixed.

I would suggest for you to first, hold the off button under the battery cover for about 20 seconds. This might stimulate "battery removal" on the SP. Afterwards, try plugging in the wall charger and see if the device react.

Did that. Still no change.
No red LED light, no vibration, even the screen is not on.
If pressing the yellow button on the back for 10 seconds doesn't work after charging it for 12 hours, you either have a faulty charger or a dead phone. (hardware failure)
Last chance would be to use a different charger. If that doesn't work, you will have to return your phone and file a warranty claim if you have NOT unlocked your bootloader nor rooted it.
Should you have rooted or unlocked your phone then I can only suggest visiting this link: http://tinyurl.com/n35lsjn

Hi,
Couple of days ago same happened to me.
I just took phone to hand and realized that its completely dead. Just like this, without a reason. No vibrations, led blinks, no reaction for any button combinations, plug-in charger and so on.
After a long time of fighting, reading forums, youtube clips etc. something started to change and prevented me to buy another phone.
First symptom was that in time where power button is pressed the red light had blinked two times shortly and then again and again. When button had been released again nothing.
Then I've been trying to connect phone to PC in flashmode. It has failed but I've observed that right after usb connector is plugged, windows knows that something has been connected ( "USB device connected" sound) but 2 -3 seconds later
disconnected ("USB device disconnected sound"). In this moment PC companion even was able to complete step "connect the device" but right after that it returned error (disconnect device, connect again and try again).
Then I connected phone to wall charger again. Now, when I do this, in first moment i see short blink of red light and immediately after this it starts to shine constantly for a couple of minutes. After that red light goes out for another couple of minutes and whole sequence repeats again and again in loop (short red light -> long red light-> no light).
I've red somewhere that constant red light means that phone battery has not enough power even to run charging mode via kernel (not enough power to run kernel). The suggestion is to be patient and charge the phone via wall charger for 15 or 20 hours, what currently happens. I'm still waiting for miracle. I could buy new battery but I wouldn't like to do this for nothing.
If you have any suggestions or advices/confirmation what the red light sequence means please feel free to comment @karan please share with us the result of service intervention and root cause of issue if possible. Thx in advance.
ps. additionally I've discovered that usb cable which I used is broken. different phone connected via this cable to pc is not recognized (nothing happens) but under another cable it does normally. It might be the reason of problems but I have no Idea if it could result the battery dead.
Hi,
Anyone knows if phone should work without battery? I've seen such information on polish android forum however when I unplugged the battery and plugged charger nothing happened. Only one short red blink and then nothing. If phone should work in such state it means that my problem is not related to battery.

Flashing Red Light ONLY when charging, phone will also not boot up!

My z3 compact will not boot up. Trying to hold the power button will not start up the phone, I then plugged in the charger for it to charge and it is constantly blinking a red light. I left it to charge for a while (about 1-2 hours) without any disruption and when I tried to hold the power button to boot it up again with the charger still on it I get this picture of a low battery.
I have tried the method of taping the power button down while having it charge to try to boot up the phone, but that does not seem to work? Any suggestions on what I should do? also I do not have warranty on the phone.
Check the indicator located in the bottom flap (where your sim card is). If its not white then water came in your device. If the indicator is white then try connecting your phone to pc and if the pc recognized it than you may be able to repair your phone with pc companion

I i had the same issue these past few days, and i searched almost every part of the internet to find a solution for this problem. Some solutions are so complicated that only technicians only understands, did all the steps on hard reset and etc. I also tried using xperia companion but it didn't work for me at first. my batt died when it was 40% more or less so i assumed that it has battery when it died, as i said earlier i tried using xperia companion but it failed for me. fortunately for me i had an extra xperia z3 so i decided to use the batt of the functioning xperia to my broken xperia z3 that has 100% battery, then i tried using the same method softwre repair on my phone, after a few hours it WORKED FOR ME. I tried opening it and its back to normal.
I hope it worked for you guys, i just wanted to share this because i didn't find any working solutions on the internet.
i had same problem with my z1c is the battery very low (during boot the battery also when plugged isn't in charge) i've solved this with orrible manual charging the battery with 5V directly on battery pins but now it works!

[Q] Strange (hard?) brick

Hi,
After many years of enjoying this magnificent phone the disaster came.
The phone discharged overnight and switched off. In the morning I had to send some texts, so plugged the wall charger into USB socked (a weak one ~500mA), after few moments a charging icon appeared and stated that battery has 1%. Ok, I really had to send those messages: I've pressed the power button and phone started to boot.
Sony logo: OK, purple wave, OK...
After 10-20 seconds it suddenly switched of, red LED started to blink.
I thought: OK, system startup needs a lot of power, maybe a charger is too week to keep up.
So I left phone for few more minutes to charge, but without success.
That was the last time I saw screen was on.
Phone is a C6903, running on a stock, rooted 14.6.A.1.236 with the recent XZRecovery.
Bootloader has been unlocked.
For the moment I've tried everything but opening back and doing the testport-trick.
When I connect the power only red led blinks (I left the phone charging overnight, no change).
When I try to enter flash mode: nothing happens but red blinking light.
When I try to start phone nothing happens at all.
But there is still hope:
I connected the phone to 2A charger using a magnetic cable.
Then I've connected normal USB cable to my PC, strange thing started to happen:
When I pressed volume Up (even after few minutes of connecting power+usb) the phone suddenly jumped to fastboot mode (blue led, it was discovered by PC, fastboot terminal was functional)
When I press power button, phone vibrates for a second, then the led pattern changes to: 1s red followed by 0.1s green, then long red, then it repeats...
I'm still unable to enter any recovery nor flashmode...
I'd really appreciate any help, have you got any ideas left how can I revive my phone?

Yup! That was it (at least I think so, I don't have new battery yet)
The Al part of positive battery terminal was broken: I have no idea why, maybe because of age, oxidation and high currents that were drained from this LiPo cell...
Anyway I've managed to temporarily join two broken Al parts, kernel and recovery booted successfully.
Now I need to wait for a replacement battery.
Phone is alive again, thanks tilakpatel for help!
But the magnetic cable trick might be useful in other hardbrick cases: just connect magnetic charger, connect normal USB cable to PC and hold volUp. Phone should be able to enter fastboot even with completely drained battery...

Seriously need help with P8 Lite

I suppose my phone is soft bricked. It doesn't get past the Huawei boot screen. I am still sort of able to enter bootloader and recovery, but I have a problem charging the phone also (which happened after I left in in fastboot mode connected to my PC for a little too long), which means no power to keep it on long for enough to flash rom via fastboot, and trying to do it via 3 key combo with UPDATE.APP on the memory card just says the image is incompatible. The thing with the battery is, when I plug it in it shows that red circle with lightning bolt in the middle like when it's charging, but it immediately changed to green (as if it's fully charged I assume) and the red led flickers. As I understand it, the red light flicking means a battery fault. I know when the red light stays on continuously it means the phone is charging, but that doesn't happen. It just blinks. I can disconnect the battery and retry and it always just keeps blinking, and turning it on means it'll die within 30 seconds. So I can't unbrick my phone if the battery won't charge and furthermore Best of ll is this is I installed a new battery 2 weeks ago and had no problem new battery. I even replaces it AGAIN when I thought the battery was faulty. So perhaps you guys know of some software, hardware, or unconventional trick to get it to charge. I'm very desperate for help! Thanks all for reading!
Just keep it plugged in overnight.

Your battery is drained.. That's the thing.. Charge it, the LED will blink red few times amd as you mentioned, red circle will turn green.. it doesn't mean that the battery is full charged, but instead, it means that the battery is charging... Let the battery charge for few minutes (possibly an hour or so). Do note whether the phone reboots or not.. if not.. its ok..
After charging your device, switch it off (if your device is turned on). Connect it to your PC and just press & hold the vol- key... It should go into fastboot mode... If it goes, then just flash the boot image of your current build..
I too faced similar problem few days back amd resolved it by doing this.. (I was on b596 when I faced this problem, I flashed b596 boot.img)

Did you recently flash anything to the phone

I thought the green circle and red flashing led meant doomsday for my device. I left it overnight at some point and it even got really hot. Strangest thing is, the screen doesn't turn off when it shows the red circle and blinking red led. And having left it overnight like that connected to the charger made the phone very hot and it didn't charge at all.

I did in fact flash some things, but even after that charging worked just fine! (that was before this charging problem) Just now it doesn't boot. (but I was certain flashboot would rescue me. I know I flashed something I shouldn't have, which is why I'm eager to get back into fastboot, but can't without any power and the PC USB to phone connection doesn't provide enough power for it to stay on.
This oddness started randomly while my phone was connected to my PC in fastboot mode (thankfully before trying to flash anything or running any commands)
I very sincerely hope someone has answers for me. I'm desperate as this was a gift and I just had to tinker. to try a better rom :crying:
But luckily I know this forum has the best experts around!
Is the problem the same as the people in this thread
Open the cell phone and disconnect the battery and reconnect it.
I had the same problem and solved it this way.

Either you open your back case and remove your battery..
Or connect your device to the PC but just by holding your vol- key, that will boot you in fastboot mode.. no matter how little charge you have, it should work

Hey there, thanks for your reply. I have in fact disconnected and reconnected the battery countless times without any effect. I also connected it to PC, disconnected battery, reconnected battery while holding VOL- and it didn't boot into fastboot, just the green circle. Just switching it off with the power button makes it switch on again immediately and holding VOL-still doesn't boot into fastboot mode. I actually once got it to boot into fastboot mode, I can't remember how, but it lasted about a minute then it died from low power even while connected to a US 3.0 port with extra power. y the way, one oddity is that when holding VOL+ is actually goes into recovery mode, but I reflashed stock recovery to try and to flash the UPDATE.APP automatic upgrade, but it didn't work and so it's pretty useless.
Thanks for all the suggestions, you guys are awesome! Really hoping you guys can help me out in the end though!

Has it charged since then? When you plug in your cable, does it charge, or does it turn on?
I tried charging with powerbank (at that time, I was out on a bus), it got superhot (the only hot thing I got in my life) and it was turning on automatically... I let it charge for 30 minutes, and then I hold the Power button to shut it down (but it didn't work, I guess).. then I connected it to my laptop just holding the volume- button, it did boot to fastboot..
I am out of suggestions, will post you again if anything else comes to my mind...
Hang in there buddy..

Nope, it's not charging. I've used multiple chargers and even different PC's USB connections, but all that comes up onscreen is the round green logo with the battery, and sometimes a red one instead of green.
And of course the constant blinking led, it never goes away. and also the screen doesn't go off like it does when it's charging. I swear the moment it turns solid red, if that ever happens, I shall rejoice.
Nevertheless, I have utmost respect for this site and faith in its member! :good::laugh: I just KNOW someone will help me resolve this. I can enter recovery (stock) but it doesn't charge there not does the silly stock recovery have a option to turn off. And even sometimes when it seems completely drained, it seems like it starts charging after about 2 minutes after I plugged it but it turns on the screen, shows the green circle, and red blinking led. I'm at my wit's end. :crying: It was a gift and I messed it up.
I didn't read everything in this thread, sorry, but just asking, did you try to charge it overnight? My brother had an old, really small Vodafone Huawei Phone and sometimes it just turned off and needed at least 12 hours charging time to turn on again. Maybe just try to let it plugged in for a day. It may help.

Yep, I did. Annoying thing is the screen stays on when it's plugged in, unlike charging. I kept it plugged in to a wall charger overnight, and the next morning the phone was hot (supposedly because the screen stayed on) and the led was blinking still. When I unplugged it it lost power. This is so strange because just a week ago there was nothing wrong with the battery even.
Had the same problem couple of times
Try this...
1. unplug battery
2. plug-in charger (without battery!)
3. when charger is plugged to the phone then plug battery connector
Enjoy

I've tried that, multiple times. I don't know what to do anymore, I'm desperate.
