My brother just bought a new in box Moto X off eBay (ruling out any warranty) about a week ago. Today it asked to update the OS, which he accepted. During the update (green android robot with blue swirly thing inside) the phone simply blinked off and ceased to respond. And I mean NO response. I don't get LED's, boot, fast boot, recovery, charge, ANYTHING. Plugging it into a computer also gives no response.
My bro didn't take note of the OS that it was updating to, but it was just an OTA. He had no suspicious apps, hadn't played with ROM's, just barely had his phone working before this happened.
I spent a long time googling for this same problem, but no results. Everyone at least gets SOME response out of their phone. I can't imagine this is a hardware problem, and I'm certain he had plenty of charge when he initiated the update (only half a day of use on the charge, should have been at %50-60 on the low side).
Anybody have an idea on how to proceed? Any info would be greatly appreciated, even a link to a helpful thread that I missed.
Phone is a 1st gen (2013) Moto X on AT&T.

I'm in the same boat... I recently bought a Moto X (2013) on eBay and having had the Atrix HD previously, I thought rooting should be simple.. yeah, no, it wasn't... i'm now hard bricked. I followed a guide about updating the driver and using the program that tricks the driver signing, and it all went as stated, except the phone still won't turn on. Adb can't see it, neither can mfastboot.. RSD Lite does see it tho it fails flashing.. I don't know what to do.. I don't have much $ and I had just saved up for awhile so any help would be appreciated
Brett and Elisha, are you running Windows? If so, when you connect your phone, does Windows chime as if it recognizes something is connected via USB?

I started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/moto-x-root-pogress-60-t3071602
After step 3, manually installing the unsigned drivers, I had to follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-unbricked-hard-bricked-phone-t3146036
I skipped to "Now software part. Go to unzipped C:\Python27 folder, launch bat-file, and wait until finish:
RUN_blank_bootloader_flash.bat"
It took a bit of time, but the phone rebooted and I am rooted.

There's a thread on this forum titled 'Resurrecting a dead Moto X'. It describes your scenario in detail and explains a way to fix it.

I know nothing of Bricking/Unbricking... Rooting or anything. I have been researching for 3 days now. I know as much now as I did then all of zip!! I cannot get past the on screen. I have done the 20 second poewr button push for up to 5 minutes. I have talked to Amazon support and have been told Im pretty much SOL. I miss my kinde and I am not ready to give up. I have seen others have appreared to be in worse situations with this issue than I am so I am hoping for some assistance.
Every time I look into KFU and understand it it doesnt download right. Almost everything says it cant work on my computer. I have downloaded several versions. I feel screwed. Is there hope for this? all the apps for unbricking and rooting that i have downloaded have been for nothing. I would really appreciate some mojo and super geek help please.

First try and put it into recovery by holding down the volume up until a screen comes up saying to reboot or restore. Also, give me some background info. on how the kindle stopped working.
Is a definite must do. I have an appt I have to leave for in a minute so as soon as I get home I will def take care of the background info and the volume up try. Thank you. I will most assuredly appreciate your help. :highfive:

Hi again... SO I did the volume up trick until my fingers started to shake. Nothing happened. I did it with the kindle attached to the computer and with out the usb tethered to anything. I did not try it straight off the wall plug tho. Nothing ....
Background. I have had the kindle less than a year. My 8 year old has been stealing it a lot the past few months trying it say is hers ;0 thats ok. Shes been playing games like bakery story Dragon story fashion world and temple run etc... she uses it for the calculator and reading programs. She also uses it for netflix. 5 days ago she watched netflix until the battery gave out. She plugged it in and waited a few minutes and it wasnt coming back in. She told me about it... I looked into everything I could think of. I tried everything I could find. I have downloaded (to my computer) a ton of root and unbricking programs. Nothing makes sense and everything says theres parameters missing. I called kindle. Support took me thru every step I had already tried (power button charging different ways killin the battery all the way doing different things etc) The only two things I see now are a huge battery in the middle of a black screen that has a very small red portion to it or the beginning screen that stays put with the words having the glowy part run across it over and over again... thats all I know for sure. IF theres any information you can help me with I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

You might need to get a factory cable. I have to get one because mine won't start up anymore either.
Hi lisa
First off Don't Panic!!! Been where you are about 2 months ago and couldn't/hadn't flashed/used from etc etc before in my life.. but my kfhd was stuffed but the sounds of things similar to you.
The volume up trick will only work once you have 2nd boot working btw.
Go to the 7' android development section of the kfhd forum and read a few threads around getting something called second boot loader.. it actually really simple and very simple to do (as long as you do follow it EXACTLY).. I did get a factory cable to assist this process, and you may need one as well, but I have read that several people have now worked out how to do it without. (Read all the thread about second boot loader there's a lot but its worth it) factory cables are only cheap at worst case..
I'm sure someone will direct you to exactly the link on the xda forum you need shortly, everyone was amazing when I initially stuffed up.keep smiling and as I said don't panic!!

Does your Kindle take a charge at all do you know or just always the same screens no matter how long you charge?
3 in one
1st querant Do you buy them on amazon? can i get one closer to home? Is there a price range I should look into?
2nd querant Ill look but be warned that my inner geek has had meltdowns over all of this. Its over my head. I just kinda bug eye and try not to get stupefied.
3rd querant No it will not charge at all.
Thank you all and please be patient with me.
I don`t know if the charging has the same issue as the first gen, it required a running system in order for the battery to charge if it ever became flat. Here`s my suggestion plug it to your pc for several hours set your computer to not sleep and leave it, if you get lucky it will eventually boot good luck. It should not need unbricking by the way.

If you have not done anything to the device to cause this ie: root, custom recovery, flashed anything, then it sounds like you just have a hardware problem. Something went wrong that should not have and would be covered under warranty. I WOULD NOT mess with anything involving root or a factory cable or 2nd bootloader. If you do not know what you are doing when it comes to those things then you could potentially do more harm than good. Did you buy it on amazon? You said you already called amazon, call them back, they will replace it, even if you didnt buy directly from them.. Sometimes the people that answer the phones for amazon are idiots. Just call until you get someone who is helpful. tell them exactly what happened, it died and won't come back on. Don't mention anything about root, factory cable, ect.. These devices havent even been out for a year so all of them are still under warranty unless you've root or installed custom recovery.
Could just be a defective charger ? did you try an alternative mains/usb wall charger, left plugged in with the kindle powered off ? it takes a long time to charge them from flat, mine was approx 12 hours Edit - A computors usb output isn't usually enough to push a charge in only keep the kindle "as is" when in use

wouldnt matter if I could root or unbrick it. My computer wont download the system operations for those properly. I did mention that I dont know how. and I did say that I dont understand what they are so I am not doing them. That I had tried the 20 second power button push all thw way up to 5 minutes on the usb to the computer and the wall as well as detached. Nothing worked. Its stuck and they wouldnt explain why. All I got was well sorry thats it we cant help you. *sigh* I have tried calling like 5 times. to no avail. Thanks tho.

Try testing the charge on a couple different power cords that are know to work and put it on one for 12hrs. Then if it couldn't charge I'll walk you through the steps of using a factory cable.
What kind of computer do you have. These things always work smother on a Windows machine (or Linux). Also did you ever install the drivers for your Kindle on the computer. Nothing will work properly unless you have the drivers on there. They should load automatically when you plug your kindle into the computer. If they don't, here is a thread where you can download the drivers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890413 Just download and you can either unzip the file and use what's inside or just double click to install :good:

I dont mean to discourage and maybe it will work but the only thing a factory cable is used for is to put the device into fastboot so you can flash partition imgs or other programming features(the cable uses the fifth lead on a micro usb cable to activate fastboot). Even if it goes to fastboot your kindle is not bricked and and you would have no reason or need for fastboot. From what you've said you have not rooted or modified your device at all, there are only two possibilities of what is wrong with it at this point- the charger is bad or the charging port has gone bad. That box with the red bar about a 1/4 full just means the device doesnt have enough charge to power up. It happens all the time on mine and once I charge it for a couple minutes its fine. So your device is obviously not charging and I dont think a factory cable is going to change that. I just want you to have the right info and not go wasting your time and money trying things that are irrelevant to what is actually wrong with your device.

have cable, still lost. Am trying to figure out what I need. Things wont load on the computer. I have a samsung RV515 laptop. I cant get the computer to recognize the muffed kindle. The fastboot screen does show up but then goes no further. It does need to show up on the computer so I can do more things with it. Not so much atm. I have the recommended linked .exe on the computer but it will not run as it says not everything is downloaded and I have to finish d/l it manually. I am not ready to give up but I wont do anything to screw it up more.
No it wont go past the 1/4th charge. I have left it on the charge for 24 hours and not getting further. Again I have seen people not even able to get to the front screen pull it back from the dead. So Im hoping.. thanks
You mean the exe that I linked you to doesn't work?

Hi,
I got a new Motox two days ago, I started it normally, updated the OS as asked and used it without GSM (I am waiting for my nano sim) until last night, when it froze and never came back on.
I tried to press the power button for a looong time, I tried power+volume down, I charged it all night (the led does not come on).
When I connect it to my Linux box it is detected as the Qualcomm QDL device.
I am probably sending it back, but I wonder if I no one knows a magic solution to this problem?
I saw a thread that talks of using the Qualcomm QDL interface to re-flash the bootloader, but that's Windows only and I do not have access to a Windows box.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
There must be more to this. What exactly have you done with the phone? Need the details.

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone is able to help me out with my HTC one M7. My phone has been out of commission since Monday night and I'm all out of options on what to do, I've even tried doing a factory reset as a last resort but that didn't seem to work as it looked like the process just stalled.
Here's a bit of background of what happened: Monday night I charged my phone through the wall outlet and went to have dinner, I came back to check on the phone and it was off. I thought that was odd so when I tried turning it back on I would only ever be able to get to the white HTC logo screen. I'm able to get into fastboot and recovery but after googling solutions and trying the options people have mentioned, it still isn't working. I'm not very tech oriented so I wouldn't know how to flash ROMs or anything like that...soooo, I'm hoping someone is able to explain steps in I'm able to understandr. I don't even know flashing ROMs is possible at this point since whenever I plug it into my PC, the drivers aren't recognized by Windows and says 'failed to install drivers'.
Any help is very much appreciated!! (I signed up to the forum in order to write this and seek help lol)
I haven't done ANY customization to the phone everything is all stock from my service provider so I'm really baffled at how this sudden fail could have happened. There was no OTA update either.

Yes, I did. It flashed to the screen with 2 green arrows in a circle and 1 downward green arrow with a progress bar at the bottom but nothing happens during this period. I left the phone like that for about 30 mins just to see if anything would happen and nothing did.
Hey everyone,
My friend came across an unfortunate problem with his HTC One. This is what happened according to him:
For the past few months the battery life was getting worse and became terrible, but it's been otherwise fine in terms of performance.
He was at work playing some music via aux
The song stopped playing unexpectedly
Figured that it was a problem with YouTube was like wtf, so he closed YouTube and tried reloading.
It wouldn't show anything and nothing worked, left it that way as to not mess it up more.
Then it completely froze and he shut it off
Not it wont turn back on at all.
He said he left it plugged in charging for a while, still nothing. Tried overnight, still nothing.
Says he really wants to get at least his pictures out of his phone.
So, what are some troubleshooting steps he can take, or what can he do?

try to boot the phone while shinning a bright light to the light sensor. (this is protection to avoid booting the phone when its in your pocket)
Press and hold Power and Volume down for at least 30 sec
Connect the phone to a Windows computer using the original usb cable (or any other cable already known to work for data transfer) to a USB 2.0 port on your computer, then go to Windows devices manger, is the device detected as QHSUSB ? Or Qualcomm something?
Hi thanks for the reply.

Since the phone went in QHUSB_DLOAD by itself and randomly, this is an hardware failure, the phone will need a new motherboard. It would be fixable only if the phone went in this mode directly after flashing a (incompatible) firmware. Unfortunately there is no way to recover the data from it since the emmc is soldered on that defective board.
Sorry
Wow damn that's real bummer... so there really isn't anything he could do? I remember him telling me that he wanted to salvage pictures from his graduation, but this problem is not letting him

Unfortunately no. Another perfect example why you must backup your important files regularly. Smartphones are unreliable for preserving data, they are not made to last very long (well like everything nowadays ).
I already heard of someone desoldering his emmc chip (not from a M7 btw) and soldering it back to other hardware to extract the data so this is not impossible but your friend would have to find someone really qualified to try this kind of thing and it will probably not be cheap if it can be done..... But no there is no conventional method (using your computer and a usb cable) to extract any data from this phone.
@alray I know it sounds silly, but would it be possibly to save the pics by booting into twrp and copying them to a USB otg?
I'm guessing no
And yeah, it's always a bad idea to keep important files and data on one device.. be it a USB flash drive, an external hdd, a laptop, a smartphone.... etc
there's always the chance of it refusing to work or getting stolen.

how are you supposed to go in twrp if the phone is stuck in qhusb_dload (qhusb_dload = phone not even booting in bootloader = dead).

Doesn't matters what it's saying exactly, it's dead. It's only possible to unbrick a m7 that went in a "Qualcomm something" mode because of a bad firmware flash. If it went in that mode itself, without flashing, your phone is dead.

Hello Moto,
So I got my Moto G5s Plus awhile back when it was still new and I tried to root it right off (I know...it was stupid, I realize I should've waited a little until the stock firmware was released and more guides were made), and basically I ended up hard bricking my device.
There are no lights, the screen is completely blank, and the power button does absolutely nothing.
I have heard of a way to revive it from level 0, however, and I was on the path to doing that until I realized that-for some reason-my laptop does not recognize my dead phone at all. In the guide (which I've long since lost the link to..) it said that my phone would appear in my device manager (>start>right click on Computer>manage) under the android tab after installing a bunch of ADB drivers and such, as "ADB-somethingsomething". No such thing happened; I couldn't even find the tab it was referencing. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers that it mentioned, I couldn't seem to get my laptop to recognize my phone.
Interestingly enough, or perhaps not, I plugged it into my brother's laptop and it recognized it just fine (note, he had the drivers already installed and has meddled quite a bit already in this area).
Anyway, so now I have a pretty much mint condition hardware Moto G5s Plus, and I kind of don't want to spent money on another phone unless I know for sure that I can't fix this one. Is there any way to revive it from the dead?
P.S. I've found the stock ROM for the phone...but there's several different packages. (like..NPS26.116-26; NPS26.116-45; NPSS26.116-45-5; etc...) This my be a very stupid question..but how should I know which one is the one I need to download?
Any and all advice/help would be appreciated.
Thank you

So I managed to get it working without using a virtual machine.
To address the first problem, my phone wasn't even charged. To solve this I took a rubber band and tied it around the power and volume down buttons and attached it to a wall outlet for about an hour. (The little white light was flashing to signal that it was receiving power...which was more than I had accomplished than..ever..really...)
The second problem was my computer. I still don't know why it worked out like this, but essentially my computer never recognized my phone as the HS-USB or anything. Instead, my computer recognized it as Motorola ADB Interface (even though it was technically off and hard bricked..). This made recovering it easy, as I simply could fastboot flash the correct stock rom to my phone and go from there.
After trying a few different stock ROMs, I finally got the right one, and could boot into bootloader. And thus, finally, I was able to install TWRP, the OS back, Xposed, and Magisk.
I've used my phone for a bit now and no problems have come up. Installing Xposed did take a bit longer than I thought it would, but other than that I got me phone back.

Rooting is software based thing, which should not damage hardware to that level,, right?
The blank-flash stuff can be helpful for you guys, but we don't have blank-flash files for our device.
You can search, learn and manage how to do it.
EDIT: can you check what happens if you keep pressed powe key and volume- key for atleast 2 minuts ??

Yea, no, this is 100% software damage. Like I said, I have a mint condition (hardware wise) phone. I'm pretty sure what I did to mess it up was overwrite the data files for the previous OS. I remember trying to get it back to stock ROM, but having a crap ton of trouble finding it...and then pretty much doing a fight or flight thing and trying a stupid and edgy alternative. (I also remember, even while the phone was still working, it only booted into TWRP once or twice, otherwise it would always come up with an error)
I feel like all I need to do is flash the stock ROM to the device...but without my laptop even recognizing it, I don't know how. Essentially, the question being, is there a way to flash the stock ROM to my device without TWRP, without bootloader, without using the device at all (just my laptop); and if there is...does anyone know how?
Pressing the power and volume buttons did nada.

I did some searching and I actually found the two links that I used while trying to recover my phone from the dead.
http://www.aryk.tech/2017/09/moto-g5s-plus-unbrick-solutions.html
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/help/moto-g5-plus-hard-bricked-recognized-t3636457
The difference for me is that I never got my laptop to recognize it as any of the "HS-USB Bulk, HS-USB QDLoad 9008, QHS-USB DLoad 9008"; that's where I stopped in the steps.
I'll be trying to follow the steps in the first link again, but this time through virtualbox (make sure there's no conflicting drivers and whatnot). I'll post back with results whenever I get around to it.
