Hey there.
I have an Xperia ZR that is unable to get into flashmode to reflash and it cant turn on.
Sometimes when plugging it into a charger or computer theres a red led lighting on but it just stays like that no matter how long you leave it. Unable to turn on and cant get it into flashmode. Tried with a rubber band to keep holding volume down while have it plugged in with flashtool ready for an entire day with no result.
Have also had the battery out for an entire night but nothing has worked. Is it just broken completely or is there some way to get it to do something again?

Hmm... Sounds like you tried pretty much everything. How about some background info? How did it get this way? Is the bootloader unlocked? Probably not relevant, but you never know.
My best guess would be that there's a loose contact with the USB connector or something, but that doesn't explain why the display doesn't come on when the red light comes on (are you running a custom ROM?). In any case, by this point, the service center is probably your best bet, if you're under warranty that is; if not, you can try taking it to a 3rd party repair shop (that's how I got my screen replaced after my warranty ran out), or maybe disassemble it yourself to see if there's anything you can jam back into place. Don't know what else you can do.
Good luck.
P.S. What about fastboot?

I dont really know anything about it, its a friends phone that bought it used. Theres 100% no warrenty on it and if anything needs to be replaced i can do that but its just determining where the issue is.
Fastboot doesnt seem to do anything either. Also the battery does get hot after leaving it in the charger for ages so i dont think there is a lose connection there? But im not sure.
If theres an issue with the screen it should still boot and such.
I thought it might be an issue with the power and volume buttons but then it should still turn on when charging id assume, or partially turn on, until the battery charging screen at least.
Wait i just tried to plug it in again.
Now flashtool gives me this
07/022/2015 13:22:00 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
07/022/2015 13:22:00 - INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode
however if i unplug it and replug it it doesnt detect it before i pull out the battery and put it in again. Holding either volume up or down doesnt do anything still, gives same message and doesnt go into fastboot or flashmode

That's... Interesting. And Flashtool just stays like that until you unplug it? It doesn't lose the connection (device disconnected) or anything like that? If it does lose it, it could be a battery issue...

... OK, I don't know what kind of black magic was used on that phone to screw it up like this, but it sounds like something's off in the battery circuit (just guessing). I'm not sure that's even fixable, but it couldn't hurt to try a mobile repair shop. Who sold you something this broken, anyway? eBay?

i dont know who they bought it from but yea seems like something with either the usb connector circuit and maybe buttons. The battery voltage is okay. Reading 3.5V and specified 3.7V on the battery so that should be eliminated as a problem

Nah, I didn't mean the battery itself, I meant (as you said) the connector circuit between the port, the battery, and the motherboard. You can try opening it up, see if there's anything you can do, but apart from a repair shop, I don't see what else can be done to save it. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.
Good luck. ?

Yea okay, thanks! I'll try disassemble it when i get the time to see if there are any loose connections and test the cables and such.
Take out the battery and try putting it on Flashmode.

Nothing happened
Any other suggestions maybe? Hopefully?
Upon further investigation, it appears that some of the back screws and the plasic in the edges behind the rear cover, is damaged. It appears as though someone has opened the phone previously and been unable to make it function again afterwards and then sold it online to get rid of it.
So ill open it up and check the insides of it, then give an update if there are more issues!

This is exactly why it took me so long to trust online shopping. ?
Download sony pc companion.
start support zone.
chose first option update software.
A dialog will open.
chose repair the phone at the bottom and follow the guide. it should repair your phone to stock settings.
everything will be deleted on your phone
i was about to open a thread when i came across this one, i have similar issue with my ZR, i had bought it brand new, but after few weeks of lollipop update, one day the phone just started rebooting randomly, and after few hours it didnt boot back up, it just went dead. and same issues, when i plug in red light comes on, but only for few secs, and no help using PC companion or flashtool. i took it to repair shop they said theyll charge me for just checking what the problem is, i said no thanks. ill take it to repair shop n see what they say.

Sounds like a death battery to me...
Try charging for one hour.., Then try to turn it on..
I don't think it does mathers if your phone is locked...,
Let me know the result
it charged my battery over 2h. nothing ....i can not turn on my breeze. the first minute i got a red charging light. like everything is ok.
i got no connection with my xp pc and active sync. the device manager can not detect the breeze. so i can not install any other boot program
any other ideas?
thanks
I had the same problem, it was hardware related though.
There are two little metal contacts that ground the battery cover, well one of them slipped though a little and was shorting pins on the motherboard. So fortunately nothing blew and it just was not turned on.
So obviously there is some form of protection from shorts that it will not power on.
Anyway check if it will turn on if only the motherboard, LCD and battery is plugged, without housing or anything else. Be sure that the back of the battery does not get into contact with the MB if you are going to try.
Good luck, hope you get it fixed..
Hello everybody, i hope someone in this forum can really help me, with that super annoying issue. Well i bought Sony Xperia Z before 1month, and it was running normally. Did you insert the sim card properly? Did you force it on its way in?
It is posiboe that you bent the pins that read the sim card, and caused a short circuit. That's you worst case scenario, though.
Try to connect the phone into flashmode, holding volume down and then plug the USB in while still holding volume down. Does the PC recognizes it? If so l, there is hope, you can try and restore the firmware from there using Sony Update Service.
Umm, i was trying to connect to pc like that, hold volume down and connect, nothing happens. Only when i connect cable to pc or to other energy sources, its red light shining about 5-8seconds, and its gone. When i put it in to wall source(i dont know how its called) it starts to tick sometimes, i mean red shine, nothing, red shine nothing, and all hour, and sometimes red light 5-8secs and its dead. Well i dissamblied my phone now, i dont see any burst parts, everythings looks okay, what should i do? Maybie try to check with power checking screwdriver where power is "walking around" ?
the battery is depleted. you need a wall charger with minimum 2 Amperes output
I would try the same, very good hint

The corosion can take many months after the phone taking water. Anyway next time just start by that point, and buy a new phone if your phone has take water.
Thank you for help dudes, i got luck that i pay for phone insurance, i got new working phone for free. Thank you for trying to help, another z is dead, because of water. NOTE : Dont believe of any waterproofs phones, because i just had it , and it died after 2months of using
People the phone is water RESISTANT. Nobody said you should go diving with it, dunk it in a glass of beer, or spray it with a hose. It's meant to withstand emergenices like spills and quick drops in water.

You should put that on your signature. You cannot be more correct. People goes nuts with the phone, "I will take my phone to some snorkeling", "I'ma bring mah phone to the river rapids", "I'm going to take underwater pictures", etc, etc, etc.
I plugged charger cable into my phone tonight and the phone restarted, it then loaded up to the o2 logo screen which displays for a few seconds and then it reboots, it keeps doing this until i hold down volume up and the power button and it vibrates 3 times.
If i switch it back on it repeats the cycle of rebooting.
Anyone got any ideas ?
It also doesn't appear to charge if i plug a charge cable into it and when i connected the USB from the phone to my laptop with the phone on it made the laptop power off
Any help appreciated i tried xperia support but they weren't much help

Thanks for the reply, i left the phone on for a bit and it no longer is stuck in a loop, it just flash's red light 3 times.
Nothing works to make it switch on and nothing happens if i plug it in to charge ?
doe's anyone know how i go about getting it repaired under warranty, Sony's on line help was less than helpful.
I got the phone from the car phone warehouse back in Feb, but my experience from my last phone going wrong is they don't want to fix it under warranty and find any reason to get out of it, also just read my insurance document and it states it won't replace/repair the phone if it should still be under warranty
How can a phone provider refuse warranty replacement of a clearly screwed up device? That's ridiculous

Well I have found that the original charger cable is faulty, hence why it isn't charging!
I have used a new cable and if I use SUS to try and fix the phone then it will show a blue light...but then states that it can't find a driver for S1Boot Fastboot ? :silly:
Any ideas what this driver is and how to install it or is SUS meant to install the driver and my phone is to broken for it to recognise it ?
Thanks :good:

Go on the Sony website and organise a repair through them, It will be much faster and you don't have to deal with Carphone WH at all!
Just fill in a form or chat to someone online and they will give you the address to send it to free post.
Package it up and you can track it.
I wouldn't open it up but it sounds to me as if the battery is not connected or present, ive fixed a few Xperia Zs and if you remove the battery and plug it in the boot loop goes on and on.
As long as you haven't opened it, the white stickers under the flaps have not gone pink, its not physically damaged, you have not rooted it AND its still under warranty.... they should replace it!
If its your fault and you damaged it I think they charge £14 to return it or destroy it, whichever you prefer.
Good luck
My coworker has an HTC Vivid which will not turn on. I can't even get a blink or a vibration from it, so I can't even get into recovery or factory reset. I suspected that it was simply unable to charge the battery but it is detected when I plug it in to USB (first as QHSUSB_DLOAD while it searches for a driver then ZEUS Flash Device once Windows Update finds and installs one). The fit is tight/snug and the PC detects it, so I assume the USB port is fine and it should be able to charge.
Now, the owner is an old man who doesn't even know what "root" is, so I highly doubt he did anything which could brick it. He knows I often repair phones for other coworkers so he asked me to take a look at it.
Before I tear into a phone I always look online to see if anyone else has had a similar issue. I haven't seen anything about this yet and I haven't encountered it myself either. The phone is in a rubber Otterbox skin and looks to be in great shape. It does not appear to have ever been dropped. Has anyone heard of these just spontaneously failing to power on? Has a fix been found?
I haven't looked inside yet but the phone looks great externally and under the battery door. The battery might be ever so slightly bulging but it's hard to tell just by looking at it. It's the only thing I've detected that might be out of order, so I'd like to try another. Too bad I can't find a spare locally.
Should I be able to get any kind of feedback on USB power without the battery inserted at all? Can someone try booting or entering recovery with the battery removed?
Thanks!

Take the battery out and charge it externally. It sounds like the port is not charging, for whatever reason. My phone did that back before I rooted it. Hasn't happened since.

Hello !
A few weeks ago my XZ fell down and the display (glass, lcd, touch) was broken so i had to fix it. I decided to fix it by myself, i bought a display and started to do it on my own. Everything went fine. After I finished i wanted to charge my phone and the red (bright) led was on. I knew, that this was the symbol for charging so i was happy and waited a few minutes. But my phone never went on, there was no Sony Logo, no battery logo, nothing, no vibration. I decided to take another look into my phone, and checked if anything wasn't right reconnected, but everything was correctly. With still no success i thought, the battery was dead (because it lay down about 4 weeks with no power) and ordered a new battery. I inserted the battery, but all i got was this damn constant red light. (at the beginning its a bright light and then switches to a darker light).
I read about 5 Million forums and got in contact with flashing my device. First i tried it with the Companion (no success), later with flashtool (no success).
All i have to say is that, i dont even now if my screen is working, i easily come in fastboot/flashmode and i'm definitly at the end of my possibilities. I need someone's help, and if you say my phone is completely damaged, then please say, so i can stop working on this matter and sell it!
Thank you very much, and sorry for the long read.

Maybe motherboard got damaged or check the connections
I checked again my inner phone and, okay im new in fixing phones, but it seems to me that nothing got damaged, everything looks fine, the flex bands don't look different as they are shown in the videos. The connections are 100 % connected. But i have to admit: New battery -> not working, check connections -> all are stable , PC companion repair -> nothing. After all i think i destroyed something but i cant figure out what. On Monday i'll go to a repair shop and let them check what's the issue. If somebody has another idea, please let me know, i will try to repair it then.

Hey thanks for answering! As i mentioned in my starting post, my PC detects my phone without any problem. I also used PC Companion to repair my phone. So i dont think it's a software matter. Also Flashtool detects my phone, i could even install a new software.
But i gave my phone today to a repair shop, they'll analyse the problem... for 20€.
I'll tell you what exactly is damaged in a few days if somenone has the same problem like me.
I destroyed the Display Connector. Sold my phone for around 40 euro. -.-
