With the TMO version unlocked you'd think we'd have a simpler root method than flashing the entire /system partition, wouldn't you?

Great. Thanks
G4 newbie here, so the bootloader is fully unlocked on the T-Mobile version then? You don't have to do the official LG Developer unlock method that currently only the 815 EUR model can do?
When ROMs drop, you have full access to the phone? Just want to confirm, I had a non EUR model on AT&T that worked great, but was sick of not having any access to the system. Does the H811 have the bands required for AT&T?
Fully unlocked. No LG dev stuff.

Question to anyone willing to answer:
How did people figure out that enabling OEM unlock made the bootloader be unlocked on the T-Mobile variant? I'm wondering because we have very little info on the H812 variant to determine if this technique would work. And please don't give me that canned answer "IT ONLY WORKS ON H815 and H811", as I know what I'm doing... I just want to understand why the H811 T-Mobile is different and if other more obscure variants could also have this solution.
Thanks!
I Attempted to flash the twrp one click recovery to my friends LG G4 H811 TMOBILE, I went to developer mode, checked the box to OEM UNLOCK, and whenever the phone reboots to Fastboot or Download mode, if done by the H811 one click bat script, the phone only reboots regularly, if i manually adb reboot-fastboot then the screen shows a barcode, and the phones IMEI number. Whats up with this?

The H811 Tmo is different because the carrier, TMO, decided to allow it to be unlocked. That is pretty much all there is to it. I am sure that is frustrating to non H815 and H811 owners.

The first post in that thread says:
"T-Mobile USA LG G4 H811 10H. WILL NOT WORK ON 10N."
I have the 10N. I also don't have a Windows computer. Where can I find instructions for obtaining root? (I prefer a manual method using Linux commands if possible.)

I realize that this thread is pretty old, but I just wanted to confirm I was able to use the Moto Unlock tool to unlock the bootloader on my Alltel XT1050. I am currently on the latest ACG update (161.44.31.ghost_row.ACG.en.US.) Follow the steps given by Moto here and you should get the unlock code.
Also, here is a simpler tool to use for ADB and fastboot (rather than downloading the entire Android SDK as Moto suggests.) When you want to use ADB/fastboot, open the command prompt and type
Code:
cd C:\adb
From there you can use the fastboot commands as per Moto Unlock instructions. Note that the $ sign is not necessary.
Hope this helps!

Yes the bootloader for the XT1922-7 is unlockable and you can root it too. See my thread in this forum for more info.
I can also saying without a doubt that the Moto G6 play 4 Boost Mobile has unlockable bootloader.
Does that mean you can use it on a different carrier as well then? I know bootloader unlocked is different than carrier unlocked.

Yes of course. I know Verizon varients of Moto phones have the bootloader locked which I would assume is to make sure it's used with there service only.
Its just interesting you can unlock the boost models but not Verizon.
Is the phone locked to the carrier via IMEI then?

It doesn't matter, it's not related to bootloader. New devices always comes with locked bootloader, for safety purpose and warranty. Many brands allow to unlock easily (OnePlus, Motorola...) some other need permission (Xiaomi, Huawei).. In many case unlocked boot and root could result in a warranty loose.
I understand this. Perhaps I'm not asking the proper questions. Verizon's Motorola devices do not allow the bootloader to be unlocked, at all. They allow the device to be carrier unlocked after a year though.
Can you use the boost Mobile g6 with different carriers??

How did you try to unlock it?
I booted up the phone, went to developer options, enabled unlocking, rebooted to bootloader mode, ran the "fastboot oem get_unlock_data" command and put that into the motorola site for unlocking bootloaders, and got the unlock key. Then I followed the directions and used the command "fastboot oem unlock myUniqueKeyFromMotorola".
Can the Boost g6 play be network unlocked? I was thinking of picking up the boost variant at Walmart and using on MetroPCS. I've had success doing this in the past with the Verizon prepaid Moto G & E series but never tried with the boost prepaid.

Boost Mobile is 12 months with the device. And Sprint is 50 days. Boost runs off of sprint. You have to call customer service to request a sim unlock. You can buy an unlocked one from like bestbuy or from motorola's website. Sim unlock is different from bootloader unlock. Unlocking the bootloader does not unlock the sim card. Sorry I didn't realize I was quoting what you said sorry triggerlord

I also have a v40 with the bootloader unlocked (can enable USB debugging in Developer tools), but whenever I try to boot to fastboot mode (either from recovery or adb) it just boots back to normal Android OS.

I've been on Android for 10 years, originally with the Galaxy S1 and many devices across multiple manufacturers.. The ability to "Enable OEM Unlock" at all has been a key indicator of whether the bootloder was unlocked. This was true for all of my devices, up to my LG v30 that I continue use for my daily driver.
The v40 was the first device that allowed me to enable OEM Unlock without the bootloader being unlocked, which is why I was confused.
Thanks for the reply.

Right. That was my point as well.
https://en.droidwiki.org/wiki/OEM-Unlock
Enabling OEM Unlock itself does not unlock the bootloader, but you can not unlock the bootloader unless it is unlocked.
This is the first device I've used that allowed me to enable OEM Unlock, but DID NOT allow me to unlock the bootloder. For other devices that had a locked bootloader, the first step of enabling OEM Unlock wasn't even an option, it was either missing altogether, or it was greyed out and unchangeable. That was my confusion.

Yes. I'm not very good in English and I do not know how to create a guide here in XDA. But give me a chance and I'll try
[Guide]
I am not responsible if something goes wrong.
everything works perfect with total comptability, but I can't confirm if fastboot can be accessed after crossflash. Also, there is no option of wifi calling or calling plus, I cannot confirm OTA, because I installed android pie and it is the latest version for US unlocked. ***Maybe if you install the latest android 8 oreo before ,then you can test if ota works***

*rename the firmware file to pie.kdz and put in desktop*
install lg usb drivers (be sure your device can adb. enable usb debugging, open command and put adb devices. check notification on the device and hit always. also Switch between all USB connection modes from the mobile so that Windows installs all the drivers
install lg up
Put LGUP_command.dll it into the folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common ( if there is no common folder, create one and put the file there )
now...
put device in download mode
power off device
connect usb cable to pc, but not the phone
Hold and keep phone volume up
Plug your USB Cable to your phone while holding volume up, already in download mode, release volume up button
now go to device manager an check in ports/lge the value number for example com3, save it
Then go back to C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP
Hold the shift key and right click on a free space.
Choose to open a command prompt or PowerShell in Windows 10
After oppening it, type cmd and hit enter.
now you need to put this
lgup_cmd.exe com3 “C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common\LGUP_Common.dll” “C:\Users\your desktop username\Desktop\pie.kdz
and hit enter, but need to change the com number value. for example mine was com3. if yours is com2, com5 or another just change the number.
and that is. if you do it right then it will start flashing and you will see the progress on the mobile and the powershell

Not sure
I just bought a carrier unlocked V405QA running V405UA20a. Confirmed with my t-mobile sim card.
My goal is to install Lineage 17.1 with root via TWRP and use it on t-mobile service. After reading a lot I’m still not 100% sure how to proceed.
The steps I think I should follow are:
Crossflash with a US unlocked rom (V405QA20a). Using this guide.
Unlock the bootloader using this guide. Since I have "Enable OEM Unlock" and I’m running Pie I think I should skip the V35 Bootloader section but I’m not sure.
Install TWRP and root using this guide.
There's also this guide from getdroidtips.com which seems simpler and covers steps 2 and 3.
Has anyone tried similar steps?
Is crossflashing required if I'm going to load Lineage anyway?
Can step 2 result in loosing fastboot?
Is getdroidtips guide a better approach?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
I'm trying to do this too
I have had a good few headaches from it, and still am not done. But most of my headaches I could easily say are my fault.
Crossflashing worked great for me, works with Tmobile
When I first unlocked I was able to use fastboot, get TWRP working, and run LineageOS. But after stuff messing up, I have now lost fastboot mode and don't know how to get it back
It's all possible, and not too hard. I personally followed the steps you think you should follow. But I'd recommend hearing what other people have to say first before you start doing things.
Edit : I got a sprint carrier locked one and made it unlocked
So I’m not 100% sure on the steps for unlocking that the getdroidtips.com guide gives you. I’m pretty sure it only works for European models. Honestly, the other two guides don’t look too crazy. Although, you may want to cross flash AFTER unlocking your boot loader. My v40 gets here sometime this week. I’ll try to follow the other guides and I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thanks! I thought the guide is only for bootloader unlocked. Does it carrier unlock the phones too?

I'm 99% sure this method is only to unlock/mod the bootloader....and does NOT network/carrier /sim unlock anything. If there is a sim/unlock method that is do-it-yourself, it would require flashing a rom etc. I would love to be wrong here though.

Thanks. That's what I thought too. Was puzzled by the earlier poster.

Just follow the whole guide and definitely do not use getdroidtips. You still need the engineering abl to enable fastboot and run the unlock command
