LMY48I broken Hotspot? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well prior to the new update, my Hotspot worked fine, now it no longer shows on devices or if it does it's a painful time to get it to connect and if it happens to connect, it doesn't work anymore. Anyone run into this or know of any solutions?

Who is you carrier? Is tethering in your plan? Have you tried adding this line to your build prop? net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Add that line to the end, save and reboot. Works well with vzw

Yup, you're right. I just checked. FWIW, AT&T with a family share plan which includes tethering. Unrooted 48I.
I did check USB tethering, and that does work.

Already been doing that since 5.0 with sql edits and all, this update broke it along with a few Bluetooth issues. Now I have sprint and it's weird, when I'm on b25 or b26 it works fine, but when I'm on b41,thats when it breaks

Hmmm, well at least that works, but it's just weird this update broke it, hopefully someone will have some insight or the next update will fix it.

Just gonna give this a healthy bump, just to see if anyone has figured anything out, I've tried everything from erasing the tether add-ons to re-adding them but I still get nothing when it comes to b41 but b25 and 26 work okay.

Mod please close or leave for others benefit, a cache clear with twrp fixed the Hotspot and Bluetooth issues I was having
UPDATE
Still broken....

Same issue here- Hotspot no longer works on ATT, rooted and using net.tethering work around. Any ideas?

Tethering?

I'm running a 2.3.3 stock, rooted deodyxed(sp) nexus one and I was would wondering what apps are out there that would let me tether?
Thanks in advance.

ummmmm the stock rom has this built-in.... I thought.
Settings>Wireless&Network>Tether&portable hotspot
Yeah stock android has tethering built into the OS. Up to 8 devices I believe, or close.
So that won't require me to pay through ATT? Could anyone elaborate?

Yes
yes you don't need to pay the carrier i got t-mo and I use tethering all the time. It works great or download barnacle for creating a wifi hotspot, thats better.

I think this isn't entirely true. The carriers have some control over this, and AT&T recently changed their tethering policy. That might mean you can't tether without the proper account.
The carriers can't control tethering. They can attempt to charge for it, though, using various methods of detecting you tethering.
That's what I'm thinking about; because I bought this phone from someone here and the line is still registered to a Capptivate, how could they know if I'm tethering or not?
I would have increased upload ans download usage but... other than that how could they know?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
That, to me, is a form of control, and what I meant.
I don't know if they do this, but theoretically, it could be built into the system to know when packets are the result of tethering. More likely, is that it is built into the phone software by the carrier, and so the N1 wouldn't be subject to this because the carrier doesn't have control over that.

I see everyone is using the term "tethering" to mean your phone sharing its internet connection via Wi-Fi? I guess the definition has changed -- to me, tethering was always using your phone as a dial-up modem, i.e., using a dial-string to connect to the internet, no? For example, using BT DUN (which is advantages, as you can keep your phone in your pocket and initiate an internet connection right from the computer, although I have yet to see an implementation of this on Android). In this case, carriers can tell. For example, with Rogers, the dial string is *99# so they can tell if you are using data over that versus using data on device via the normal APN.
Yes, I believe the most of the reference for "tethering" is changed from "legacy" reference - it's either USB or WiFi tether, and in both you don't actually use the phone as a modem to establish a connection, but use its own connectivity and share the access to it.

I guess I need to catch up with the times! To me what your describing was internet connection sharing, not tethering... I guess my age is starting to show!

PSA 4.3 OTA breaks wifi tether

Wifi tether will no longer start up if you apply the 4.3 OTA. If anyone relies on wifi tether just be warned
I have tried the other tether options available and so far no luck with any of them. If you have tethering as part of your plan or use a custom rom you are most likely ok but stock rooted 4.3 seems to be broken at the moment
any ideas?
You have tethering on your plan?
People still do this?

no, per my previous post if you have tethering as part of your plan you should be fine, I usually tether about twice a year and used the wifi tether app in the past but its not working with 4.3 as of yet

I just figured with the advancements in smartphones, there's less of a need to carry a laptop with you away from a network.
And there's WiFi just about everywhere now.

Wifi tether only works if you are rooted. So if you took the OTA 4.3 update, you are not rooted anymore and Wifi tether will not work.

WiFi and USB theter do not work
Hello
WiFi and USB theter do not work any longer.
My stock device had WiFi and USB theter working before with the onboard tools out of the box.
After this update both stop working.
I can connect to the device but it will not pass me throug to the internet.
PDAnet (which I still own from the past) is working as USB theter.
Hope there will be a fix out soon as this looks like an error.

[Q] Sprint Hotspot Not Working after both settings.db and net.tethering fixes

I have a Sprint Nexus 6 (bought through Sprint), 32GB blue version. It is running stock 5.0.1 (LRX22C) that is rooted and unlocked. I was successfully able to get the line added to settings.db and add the net.tethering... line in (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/sprint-nexus-6-wifi-tethering-root-t2949024). My hotspot even turns on, and I can get other devices to connect to my phone. However, I cannot get internet access on the devices. I get a DNS error. I manually set the DNS servers used to Google's servers, and it did not fix it.
I had no issues on my GS5 with DNS, and I am getting very frustrated with this phone and hotspot. Can anyone help me get it going?

You have to use sqlite and add something else in order for it to work

Verizon tethering

So I got a Nexus on Sunday and rooted it on Tuesday. I have read about setting up tethering on the device. It seems to be a hit or miss from what I understand. Does the Nexus 6 really tether or not? I'm lost with all the comments from researching online. Can any take the time and explain to me the whole Nexus 6 tethering on VZW?

Tethering on VZW once you are rooted is VERY easy.
You need to add the line "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" to your build.prop file
then reboot the phone, and setup tethering.

7.0 wifi issues??

After official update to 7.0 from dp5 my n6 hates connecting to my router. My firestick, 2 HTC phones and Samsung galaxy tab connect just fine. Anyone having similar issues or is it a bug? It's driving me crazy, wait all this time for Google to get it ready and 2 days in it goes to s**t..

If it was the OTA from the preview, then you need a factory reset. All clean updates work nicely.

Restarted router more times than I can count. Keep in mind the n6 is the only device in my house thats doing this. Worked yesterday, I am lost on this. I just got damn thing set back up and trying to avoid a factory reset again if possible.

One of the first things I did. I had Xfinity out here today to check and it's all good, even upgraded modem. New connection and new modem didn't help.. it's not a major issue being it will pick up my neighbors open signal. Kinda glad I held off on Fi for now, screwed wifi wouldn't be good with that service

Is it on 5Ghz or 2Ghz? IIRC N6 can't connect to some certain channels on routers over 5Ghz unless you force your router to a N6 friendly channel.

I've also had luck by changing the password for the phone's connection on the router. If I remember right, I changed it, saved, changed it right back to what it was, and I could connect again.

You're welcome, and I'm glad it worked for you! Someone suggested that to me when I was having the same problem years ago. I don't remember specifically, but I think it was something to do with the phone's BT profile or ID changing enough that the router's security wouldn't recognize it as the same device. Changing the password and changing it back somehow reset everything and allowed it to connect as a new device.
can confirm, changing the "wireless network key" in the router was the only thing that worked, my device just refused to connect to wifi after I upgraded to 7.0, this shouldn't happen, there is a good number of people reporting this issue with the 5x and 6p it seems there's a problem with the drivers and returning to MM doesn't solve it
