Hey all
I have my friends old sgs-i9305t which has a broken home button which I would like to root and possibly install a custom rom onto. This can be useful for my secondary sim when I travel.
Problem is, I cannot seem to connect to pc at all. So right now it can't reboot to download or recovery, and the adb methods for rooting aren't working as I can not currently connect even as a usb drive (yes this phone has likely gone through hell before I got my hands on it).
Maybe I should add, I am on Windows 10. But that didn't interfere with other devices I connected to this pc.
Anyone got any tips or solutions?

Well, I worked out how to do all the flashing without any need for a pc. A little tougher on a galaxy device with a broken home button the USB connection chip only knowing how to charge (no adb or even USB disk connection).

There is no need to root the phone if you want to flash a custom rom anyway. There are apps on the play store like quick reboot, rapid reboot with those you can boot into download mode and flash whatever you want via odin/heimdall

Yes this is true, however, those apps need root access which I didn't have. And then, I also reconditioned this sgs3lte where Odin and Heimdall could not work (no home button to boot into download mode + USB port is only capable of charging, no data transfer).
Eventually I managed to flash twrp and then Cyanogenmod 12. So it's all OK now.

Flashed today my GT-I9000 to TO froyo I897UCJI6. I know i should not have done that now. But i really got pissed today at the gps of my phone and when i saw and update for galaxy s i just went for it, haven't checked the phone variant version. Thing is now my phone has no gps whatsoever it boots up fine but, sound only shows when i plug my headphones, accelerometer dont work correctly and so on....
So i though i`ll flash it back to stock. But the thing is once i connect the usb cable the phone just reboots and stays dead until the usb is disconnected.
I read the other threads but found no similar issues.
Here is a brief video of my problem

since i can`t post links
Anyone has any ideas how to get me back to stock?
Thanks!!
Damn i can`t even charge it!
Kinda weird indeed, try to remove the battery, wait a little, insert the battery and go to download mode (volume - / home / power) then start odin, put all files needed, and connect the usb, if it doesnt reboot hit start...
you got to enable adb debugging on your phone then open a command window and type: adb reboot download connect the usb to the phone and hit the enter key for the adb command before your phone fall asleep, then you are in download mode an can flash any rom with odin.
hope this helps, i flashed the same wrong firmware from the Vibrant.
Thanks Franklin, i tried the battery trick to no luck.
This is i cannot put my phone back to download mode because my "HOME" button is not mapped to do anything, seems like the "RETURN ARROW" button does the fuction when the system is loaded.
Any other ways to flash it back? Sd card or something?
Thanks for replies ;]
please try it my way it worked for me and i think it will work for you
I open the cmd navigate to c:\androidsdk\tools\ type in adb reboot download hit enter, it mounts daemon tools i plug in usb cable and 3 seconds later the phone goes blank and it stays unresponsive(no 3 key combination, not even the power button can turn it back on) i unplug the usb cable and the phone automaticaly shows the AT&T logo and starts up. The same happens when i plug my charger in!. Does that mean my SGS usb port is fried or something? Is there another way to flash my pnoe back to stock ROM?
I am so sorry i tried to make it better :[
Any clues?
no this is NOT a defective phone, its the result of the ROM and the 3 Button combo can´t work oh and you dont really mean deamon tools? and you musst plug the usb cable in the phone right before you hit enter or it can´t work!
I did that too. Like i said the phone turns it self off once the usb cable is attached.

dainiuxxx, this thread belongs in the Q&A section, not in development. Take a moment and read the "STOP, READ THIS BEFORE POSTING" thread at the top of both of these sections, it has clear guidelines for proper thread placement.
Sorry for that sirphukee.
Any help? Anyone?
Anyone that can help?
have you tried plugging it into another PC or Laptop?
Yup tried amothe laptop, reboot.
Wall charger, reboot.
So i`m kinda out of options?
yes, return it to the store, to get an exchange
a normal working SGS does not reboot when plugged into any USB port/charger
it's Shorted (damaged) for some reason
ok, return sounds good to me, but what will i have to say when they`ll switch on the phone and see the AT&T logo?
I`m in UK and my network is Orange UK.
Will they accept it back with no problems, i kinda doubt that....
uhh... you are in quite a pickle ...
try to remove the evidence, intentionally use a Update.zip ROM flash to kill the flash
or flash it to stock if you find a good ROM via Update.zip
use the WiFi to download the Update.zip ROM flash to the root of the internal SD to flash it.
ROM Manager can get the same results, you can WiFi install it from Market

Installed ROM manager from market, but seems it needs the phone rooted, right?
And rooting can be done only via usb cable, right?
Where do i find a Update.zip ROM via Wifi? and what are the procedures when i do find it?
OK,
so obviously the question now is HOW DO I F...k up my phone completely so no one could see what was done to it. When i`ll take it back to the shop.

you can ROOT the phone within the phone itself
by downloading Ryzaa One click lag fix from the market
instead of installing the lag fix, select the option to ROOT the phone
Same issue here. Amazing how easy it is to mess this phone up when you are really stupid. Oh well....
Tried the one click lag fix to root it, but cannot find a way to get into download or recovery mode. Tried every button combo I have seen suggested, but either gets stuck in a loop on the AT&T screen or just boots into the OS.
At the moment I feel my only option if we cannot find a way to get into download mode is to format the internal SD card and send it back to o2 (my provider), tell them it fried when Kies tried to do an update, cross my fingers and hope they send me a new one.
So I want to load a new ROM onto my captivate. Issue is cant get my phone into download mode (I don't feel comfortable with the jig "fix") to use Odin to apply the kernel fix, to allow the install of clockwork mod, to finally get the new custom ROM on my phone. i really hope there is a way to do this, my phone is rooted, was updated to 2.2 froyo.uckb1. I know android is linux based so why can't companies like att & Samsung leave it as open and free for us. Its not like were pirating we just want to improve our gadgets. If i wanted zero options and get locked into a single configuration i would have gotten the iPhone. Please help
Have u tried the All In One Tool by bay_wolf ??
Here's the link...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418
U can use this for Froyo Roms. Also, under "Advanced" there is an option to select that will reboot ur phone into download mode. There's been a few times in the past where I've used this tool just for that.
With phone on as normal, Enable usb debugging on phone, plug micro usb to phone then usb to computer, Connect storage to pc, click Advanced and select to Reboot to Download mode and there u go... Hope this helps.
What exactly aren't you comfortable with about a jig?

Agreed. Getting your phone is something you should figure out. some phones need a special odin to work. You have a much higher probability to perm brick your phone if you don't
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You can use ADB to get the phone in download mode. But in all honesty having a Jig around is always a good idea. Some times the key combos will just not work and if ur stuck on a bootloop or w/e that jig will save your but xD. Keep in mind are ways to hard brick your phone like mixing up GB with froyo bootloaders or ODING failing to flash the bootloader. This problems will not be fixed with a jig.
Don't make an easy thing hard... remove all from phone battery, sim, sd....place the battery back... press the 2 volume rockers at the same time and and without releasing the buttons plug in your usb into your phone... this will get you to download mode

That doesn't always work. Specially if you get a soft brick. I've had my phone bootloop and it wouldn't go in to download mode with any of the methods =/

My need for the new rom is to unlock my phone sim, i cant use the methods ive found for the 2.2 captivate due some issue with the file needed to get the code. if someone with the knowhow here is in the new orleans area i can buy you a coffee or something for some help
k took some crazy amounts of Google searching a couple full wipes bricking and such and a handful of patching and custom files actually ripped from another phone but I did it
Hello everyone!
My first post here, so you guys better outshine me!
So my nephew locked my sister SG1 i9000, and I've tried most of the methods to unlock it. As far as I know she don't got a google account synced with the phone.
Following methods did NOT work:
Vol up+home key; off button
hooking it up with the PC
[email protected] / null
Does anyone know what to do to unlock it? I don't care about data loss or such, I just want to unlock it.
Thanks!
If you don't care about losing ur personal files, boot into recovery mode (hold "Volume Up+Home+Power" as you turn on your device).
You'll see a list of options to choose from. In this menu, touch screen does not work. Use volume up and down to navigate up and down on the menu and "power" to select.
You'll see "factory reset". Go there and select it.
Reboot your phone.
This should make your phone go back original default settings with all the accounts cleared, also screenlock to original sweep glass unlock.

yeah, go to recovery(volumeup+home+powerbutton)
try turning off your phone by removing battery and go to recovery as you turn your phone.

if still doesn't work: do the download mode, then use odin in pc, connect your phone to pc. and flash speedmod kernel. and install rom that works in odin. like the XXJVS 2.3.4 rom. u can find it here in xda, install via odin and done. like phone is brand new.
Samsungs are by far the easiest Android phones to flash. Be happy that you don't have a locked bootloader like Motorola. Flash a new ROM in download mode, and your problems are easily solved...

Tried the vol up+home method; factory reset and it still doesn't work. Tried once more, and this time i removed the battery. Still no result except that all data is cleared.
I've also tried to connect it to the PC but my computer does not "find" the cellphone. Do I need some kind of program? (Like a samsung version of PC Companion for SE)
Thanks for your replies!
You need the samsung USB drivers for your PC to see the phone.
you can download the drivers from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
just make sure you select the right drivers for your operating system x86 or x64

4. Could boot into download mode but PC not seeing device.
5. Removed battery for over 1 min.
6. Still no difference, the device just cant be seen. Even after reinstalling the drivers. via Kies trouble shooting.

Did you follow hus advuce to a t.
Did you have a backup
Can yiuget into recovery via vol up.home.power if si restore last working config.
Failing that its odin and stock rom
Its virtually impossible to brick a samsung phone yesvit can occur but v v unlikely

I had the same problem today, but it worked when i did this:
- Volume down + Home + Power
- Do not press continue yet
- Open Odin
- Connect it to the computer
- Choose Continue on the Note
Now the computer should install two new drivers (modem and another one), and then the phone will pop up on the computer.
Odin is seeing :- 0:[COM4]
Thanks so much really thought I'd bricked it. Forgot all about Odin A Beer and a thanks to you both.
Just a note, not sure what went wrong but I had to flash a full stock ROM including the Modem, Code and Multi to get it working again.

I have a LG Thrill that is stock ICS. If I boot the phone and check all the buttons the buttons work, however when I try to boot into recovery the phone just boots or turns off. I hold the 3d and volume down button then push the power button until a vibration and lg logo then release the power button. I've tried to go thru adb to reboot into recovery but I cannot see the device in adb.
Have you actually installed cwm recovery?
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda app-developers app
No, I'd love to be able to install CMW or TWRP but the guides I have found all say that I need to be able to boot into recovery.
You can install CWM (or TWRP) by flashing it with Fastboot, but you will need to place a recovery image file named "cwm.img" in the CWM folder in the Fastboot pack. Some available packs (check the Optimus 3D dev section, same device, Euro flavor) have the image files already included, I think.
The method I have mostly used is to flash xbsall's rooted ICS with recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195753
His rooted ICS uses a type of recovery that is in system partition (not recovery partition). So if you want that, or you do not want to flash your device, use Fastboot (or one of the customized variants)
First, thanks for the help. I now have superuser available and couldn't be happier. The reason I decided to do this was that I couldn't get the wifi to switch on and even with the super user access it won't. Should I assume that this is a problem with the phone or is this something that would work if I were to roll back to gingerbread?
It's most likely a problem with the ROM/kernel you're using. I'd switch to another.
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda app-developers app
I can't say thanks enough for holding my hand so far. Is there a good guide that you would recommend for me to look at. Some of the ones I've viewed here have different information for each of them. Is the reason that thus phone is so different from what I'm used to due to the omap processor?
Sent from my SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
I had the wifi problem a while back; it was due to me installing a custom ROM without doing required wipes in recovery before installing it. Not sure how you got to ICS, but if you follow the guide I linked above it should solve your problem. You don't have to install the custom ROM if you don't want. Just stop after installing rooted ICS. Be advised that driver install for pc is fiddly, hence the detailed install instructions.
Can anyonne throw me a line here. When I install the omap drivers for the phone (step f4.1-4.5) the phone still keeps disappearing from the device drivers. Even disconnecting and reconnecting with the volume up button pressed isn't helping. Any ideas? I've tried uninstalling all of the drivers, using system restore to roll back, different cables. It used to work, now it doesn't any ideas?
If you mean the way it keeps blinking on and off, be ready with the mouse. Watch for when it appears and quickly right click on it, you kind of have to catch it. Then point it to the driver in the Fastboot folder (not the one in the omap4flash installer folder) as described. Once that is done you unplug phone, then replug, volume up, and let the two LG drivers install. All LG stuff on pc should be uninstalled and pc rebooted before beginning with all this. Also, some antivirus software can mistake the driver as being malicious and delete it when unraring the Fastboot folder, without it notifying you. And if you have a custom bootloader on your phone you may need to skip running omap4flash installer; they seem to not agree somehow.
