Help me understand wiping - Motorola Droid 4

So I've read the TWRP page on wiping and it says to wipe data and cache (via factory reset) when changing ROMs. Now, I've only owned 1 android phone, my droid 4. I don't know how things work on other phones, but I think I remember reading (very possible I'm wrong here) that some/many other phones don't have the ROM slot setup that droid 4 does. Meaning they can only have 1 ROM installed at a time, whereas with my droid 4, I currently have stock and CM11 installed and can freely switch between the two.
If this is true, is there any need for me to ever wipe if I don't install over an in-use slot? Suppose I want to install SlimKat in a new, 3rd ROM slot. Do I need to wipe? If I do wipe, what is it erasing? The empty contents of the new ROM slot, which doesn't make much sense, or something shared between all the slots? The reason I'm asking is because my droid is getting sluggish and I want to try SlimKat, but I don't want to lose apps/settings/data in my other ROMs.

before installing a new rom, you should wipe:
Data, Android Secure, System, Dalvik, and Cache partitions
just to be safe.
Wiping is not necessary when switch from one rom slot to another rom slot, if a not installing a rom.
rom slots do not share caches.

So what is it wiping if I install a new rom to a new slot?

wiping is erasing a partition.

Right, but if I make a new ROM slot, those partitions are already empty aren't they, so there's no need to erase empty partitions?

Ok, so wiping is probably optional when making a new ROM slot, though doesn't hurt to do it anyway. Its mainly only a concern when re-using a ROM slot. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

Question regarding wiping.

Hi, I am going to sell my Milestone soon and need to prepare it for that.
Basically, I want to keep the current rom (CM) and the updates / scripts I flashed through Androidiani OR.
But, I obviously want to remove my data, google account, and purchased apps.
How do I achieve that? Thanks!
Just flash the non service 2.2.1 sbf of your region from and-developers.
Edit : i didnt read properly. Just wipe data in AOR.

Thanks for the instant reply, but how will that help?
I want to leave the custom rom (CyanogenMod) on the phone (including all the updates flashed via OR).
Won't your suggestion just restore it to factory default?

Yes. But your CM7 will stay. Take a nandroid and try wiping all in AOR.
To make things more clear, CM7 makes changes to your system partition. All your apps and google details are stored in the data partition. So wiping your data will not effect the system partition.
In case you were using apps2ext, make sure you format your ext partition as well.

Thanks, will try that.

[Q] update cm7 without formating?

Hey guys, how can I update my n1 from 7.0.2.1
to 7.0.3 without formating my phone?

Just flash the rom over the top, make a backup first though.

You normally only need to format between major revisions, it CM6 to CM7 to CM8. To update to 7.0.3, you just flash the file like normal, and if you are using ROM Manager, just don't select the wipe option.
But as others have said, make sure you backup before you flash. Ideally, you should be able to upgrade without a problem, but unfortunately, we don't always live in an ideal world. Better to be safe than sorry. That way if the flash doesn't work out, you can just revert to your backup.

Can't wipe my SGS

Hi Folks,
I am not new to this forum and i successfully flashed and tested out several custom ROMs. And yes, I know, I am still a Noob
But I have a weird problem now...
It doesn't matter which ROM I flash, my device won't get wiped. Well yes, I messed up my Nandroid backups, but:
I tried several kernels, ROMs and bootloaders. Even with the ones from samfirmware.com.
I tried it via Recovery and via the Android settings. And I've got all these old folders and files which don't get deleted when you uninstall an app. I'd really like to have a clean phone.
I know, it's a luxury problem, but it is very annoying.
So, could anyone please point me to some direction?
Thanks in Advance!
Cheers, berkley

Exact!!!
Well wipe does not wipe everything. I think to do what you are asking you need to format the internal SD card right after or maybe before a flash. That won't do the system stuff (I believe) but just the user area. The apks should recreate what they need afterwards.
But I haven't done it for a long time so don't trust me 100%. But that should do it and if you are flashing after it should clean it all up even if something useful got lost.

Use sd card maid to find legacy folders and for general clean up, amazing app

All data will be wiped if you flash with Odin with PIT-file and 'Re-partition' ticked.
Sent from hell to take your soul
could also try using the format internal SD card from the phones menu.
Does that mean that even a full reset doesn't wipe everything?
Full reset as done via punching in *2767*3855# on the dialer.
Hi Guys,
thanks for your nice words and help. I really don't know what was wrong. And I really don't know, what has fixed it!!! But now everything is working again. Thanks a ton!!!
Cheers, berkley

Deleting stock rom from stock slot?

I don't know how to do it, it doesn't give me the option... I have it backed up so I could restore it, I just need it out of my way... Any help.

Hi,
Do you mean that you want to delete the actual Stock ROM slot? I'm guessing that you're using Safestrap 3.x. If so, I don't think that you can delete it. In fact, I beleive that your Custom ROM Slots actually run off of the Stock one, so it might not be a good idea. Can I ask why you want to do it?
If you just want to wipe the system from the Stock slot, you can using the Wipe menu just like with any other slot, but be careful! Even though you have it backed up, the Stock slot is kind of finnicky from what I've experienced. I recently did an experiment where I flashed something over it. I had it backed up and everything, and when the experiment failed, I tried to restore it to how it was. I wiped the slot and restored from my backup, but the phone wouldn't boot.
Strangely, it worked when I restored it to a custom slot, but I had to get a special backup file from someone here on the forums to get my Stock Slot to work again. Just a word of caution. Hope that helps.

Moto Droid 4 Like Snail

Hi all,
I bought this cellphone about 2 years ago, but since a couple of months, is working very bad.
Starts, and I should to wait about 5 minutes before to use it, because is freezed. The apps open in 1 minute (Whatsapp, Facebook, Phone), and only with this, the cellphone becomes useless.
I wipe cache, factory reset, flash oldest to the newest firmware, but everything continues as usual.
Do you have any recommendation?
Use the cellphone like a stone is not a option XD
Regards!

if you have a XT912 or XT894, There is a Modified Safestrap 3.75 for unused partitions (/preinstall & /webtop) by Mentor.37
XT894: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-4/development/wip-safestrap-3-75-unused-partitions-t3023932
XT912: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-razr/development/recovery-safestrap-3-75-unused-t3032675
the slot using these partitions is called safeslot
