Is this update the phone keeps bugging me about since I turned it on last night really needed?
IMHO the phone works fine on its original 4.4.4

If you do a search for the benefits you can make the choice of what you wanna do. It different for everyone

I trust Fi support very little.

That screenshot circulating of 8.1 is definitely bogus. Did no one else notice the format of the build number is different? There is a hyphen where there should be a period.
