I have a rooted, unlocked i537 on stock 4.2.2, honestly don't remember how I unlocked it and can't find the method, I did it for my mom a long time ago and just traded her my ZTE Zmax because she can see it better. Anyway, is OC6 SIM unlockable via the same method, or is there a way to retain unlock along with root?

So i've had my moto x since october, and just recently got to use a rooted phone and i really want to root my moto x, im on AT&T and i know i cant unlock the bootloader, if i unlock it so i can use any sim card on it, could i root it then? Thank you to anyone that helps
Nope. Not full, real root. Doesn't matter what you do to the phone, if you're on the 4.4.2 or higher bootloader, you can not get write protection disabled. Root yes, with towel root and/or PIE (see dev sections for those)...but wrote protection will be enabled. So changes won't survive a power reset. And you can't write to the system.
And you can't safely downgrade from 4.4.2 or higher either.

SIM unlocking allows you to use the SIM from another carrier in your phone.. i.e. use a T-Mobile sim in an ATT branded X. That process does require you to have a different carrier's sim so the phone will prompt you to enter the unlock code. SIM unlock codes are available from many places around the web. It has no impact on rooting.
Bootloader unlocking allows you to flash a custom recovery, 3rd party roms, etc. By virtue of being able to flash a custom recovery you can easily root your phone. There are only two places you can get a bootloader unlock code for the X... Either Motorola's web site (for many, but not ALL carriers) or the Chinese Website or Middleman (only way if Moto doesn't supply)
As @KJ has said, with a locked bootloader and 4.4.2 on your phone, you are limited. PIE to root, but can't disable write protection.
and dispite any thread you might see about downgrading to gain root and disable write protection.. DO NOT!!! you will risk bricking your phone if you have 4.4.3 or 4.4.2 on your phone and attempt to downgrade.
I have the AT&T Note 3 N900A device running on lollipop (OTA). This device has never been rooted. I'm looking to root this but all the tutorials are for devices running 4.x.x and none for lollipop. Has the N900A on lollipop not been rooted yet?

Perfect, thank you. I realize now I will have to downgrade to be able to root.
Is there a way to unlock the SIM on the rooted lollipop. My primary reason for rooting was so I could unlock the device to use internationally. I'm now reading that the regionlock away and other unlock mechanisms will not work for the newer firmwares.

Just call At&t and tell them that you are traveling abroad and will be using your phone with a different SIM, and they'll unlock it for you..
Hi All,
I have a non-developer edition AT&T Moto X and I'm thinking about going the route of a custom rom now that it's slowed down a bit since it was new. I've had 4 or 5 android phones in the past, and this is the first one that I have not rooted/modified. So, I suppose my question is, if I'm currently on 4.4.4 with my bootloader locked, will I hinder my ability to later root and flash a new rom if I take the upgrade to 5.1?
Thanks for the help!

If you are wondering if you can root or unlock your phone to use a custom ROM, I'm pretty sure for that device there isn't currently any way to root or unlock it, there may be some temporary root methods, but don't really know, but unlocking the bootloader would only be if a new exploit is found with Sunshine, or if the China middleman reappears, which is how I unlocked
My girlfriend's AT&T S5 is finally paid off. Will AT&T unlock the bootloader? I'm coming from a Nexus so this Samsung thing is a bit prohibitive... can you use fastboot to fully restore all partitions?
No. There is no root or unlockable bootloader

The only thing AT&T will unlock (since its paid for) is the SIM.
It should be illegal what AT&T does with the bootloader. If I pay for a phone, and after all contractual obligations are finished, it shouldn't be any more difficult to unlock the bootloader than it is to unlock the SIM. AT&T should have no control over something they DO NOT OWN.
Is this site that claims root and custom recovery legit?
Yes, if you are on 4.4.2. That is an old tutorial, which you can actually find the same method on XDA. There is no current method of rooting our phones if you've taken 5.0. There is only hope that a method may exist in 6.0.1.

Can I install TWRP for the AT&T version with Nougat? I have heard that if I try it will brick. I'd really like to install a new ROM so I can get rid of all the crapware that comes with the phone.

The 920A At&t cant be rooted as of yet and no twrp because the bootloader is locked...
Bootloader
I recently talked to at&t about getting my bootloader unlocked and a supervisor told me the only way to do so without bricking would be to being it in to an at&t store and they will unlock the bootloader.. anybody else have this told to them?
They're most likely taking about a Sim unlock not bootloader. Also there is a method for rooting it but you have to be on a specific bootloader and you can only use it on lolipop.

Ya, I know about that root method. Unfortunately, my phone decided to update itself a few weeks ago and now its on BL 5. So that's pretty much a no go.
In relation to bringing in the store for a BL unlock, I did specifically ask and made sure the tech I was speaking with knew the difference between BL and sim unlock. In fact, i made it very known that my radio was already unlocked, I done that weeks before i talked to her.
