Fingerprint scanner after root... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S6

I'm wondering if there is anything that can be done to fix the fingerprint scanner after rooting the S6? I have looked but not found much discussion about it. Are there any custom ROMs that have it working? If not is anyone working on a solution? Is there any hope that we will get it eventually, or is it a lost cause, the sacrifice we've made to have root?

54 views and no replies? Either no one knows or no one cares.

Mod, is this thread in the wrong forum? I mean nearly 70 views and not even single response.

I think 70 people looked because they were hoping you had the answer, or had received an answer. I know that's why I looked. Losing the fingerprint reader is the only reason I'm not rooted yet. Hopefully someone is working on it, but worst case, we may have to wait for the Marshmallow update since it will natively support the reader without Samsung having to hack together drivers for it themselves.

I'm rooted and my fingerprint scanner works... Although not as good as it did stock.

I never had a problem with the fingerprint reader after rooting stock 5.0.2. After rooting stock 5.1.1, I had to use a custom kernel (UniKernel) to get it working again.

You must have tripped Knox right? I have rooted 5.1.1 with eng bootloader and my fingerprint scanner is completely broken.

Correct, I accidentally tripped Knox from day one (oops...) so there wasn't any reason to not go ahead and flash the kernel with the stock bootloader.

Thought so. The only reason I don't want to trip it is because I somehow feel like I'll break my phone and they'll see it's tripped, then deny me a repair or something. I don't give a crap amount Samsung Pay.

AFAIK, the only reason you would have a problem with fingerprint scanner is if you are either using the eng bootloader with a 5.1.1 rom, or 5.1.1 rom with older bootloader. Tripping Knox or being rooted should not affect it

I've tripped Knox and rooted and fingerprint scanner works perfectly (using unikernel)

So is there a way to root 5.1.1 COF8 without tripping Knox and retaining the use of the fingerprint reader? That's what I want.

Unfortunately not. The fingerprint scanner is built into the bootloader. So you either flash the eng bootloader and lose fingerprint scanner or you root and trip Knox. Is there a reason you don't want to trip Knox?

My fingerprint scanner is completely broken. I think I have the eng. bootloader, I get green lettering above the S6 splash screen at power up. So what can I do to get my scanner working? Is there a bootloader I can flash via odin or zip file? I tripped knox and could care less it does not matter to me. Any suggestions or links to files is greatly appreciated.

The best method IMO is to flash the latest firmware. If you want to flash it separately, there may be some links in general or development threads

I followed the root instructions, including the latest unikernel, and my fingerprint scanner quit working. What bootloader do you speak of- TWRP? I did flash that as part of the root instructions. I just intstalled Rapture 2.1 also and re-installed unikernel and still no fingerprint. Any ideas would be welcomed. Heck, I'd go back to stock everything to get my scanner back if I could figure out which stock to flash.
edit: I believe it's the bootloader. When rooting I installed the engineering bootloader- boot.img- but I don't know where to find the correct stock boot.img for 5.11. Thanks.

Right. I had a brain fart. Yes I flashed boot.img, unikernel, and supersu and my fingerprint scanner was jacked. I expected that per the forums. I've now also flashed a custom rom. It seems i need to find a boot loader .img file (I think). I'm downloading a Tmo factory image for 5.11 and was thinking I might find the bootloader img in it to flash? Am I on the right track?
edit: downloaded. I should flash sboot.bin out of the official image to get rid of the engineering sboot.bin and I'm golden?
edit edit: that worked!

Hi can you give us a link where you downloaded the factory image. i have search for Factory image for S6 edge but no luck. i have the same issue with my S6 edge fingerprint scanner broken.
thanks.

Samsung asked that it be removed from this site. So you won't be able to get it linked here. You will need to continue to search for the engineering bootloader on Google.

[QUESTION] Root FRF91 without touching boot loader

I know the update was a security fix but am looking for a method to root while remaining as completely stock as humanly possible. I've never rooted before and am still completely stock now.
Best case scenario would be to gain root while leaving everything stock, boot loader, recovery, etc.. maybe even try one of them nice roms for the first time (i hear cyrogen is the best and yes I probably misspelled that)
Thanks

Same question
There's a couple of tutorials about this in another thread.
If I were you i'd follow one of them and also install a custom recovery. Then play around all you like with rooted roms, stock, custom or otherwise. Once you have a custom recovery you can flash anything. The only down side is that you won't be able to install any OTA roms. But to be honest they appear on XDA in a format you can use on custom recovery way way before you ever receive an OTA notification anyway.
Then if you're sure you only want a stock but rooted rom, then install that and then finally flash the stock recovery back.
However if you're sure you don't want a custom recovery and only want root, you can follow the first half of the same tutorials.
I myself have an unlocked bootloader, but if I didnt, I would root, install a custom recovery and never look back. If anything ever happened to my device i'd just flash the stock recovery and stock firmware and send it back.
Ok, thanks!
That's good information but I'm unsure if I want to unlock at the moment. Thanks but I'll wait a little longer to see if a solution comes out that this my needs.

No, thats the point. You dont need to unlock to root OR put a custom recovery anymore. See here for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710842
So you can root, put on a custom recovery, try different roms and then go back to stock, rooted or not, without unlocking the bootloader at all.
I see what your getting at, that's what I was looking for but wasn't sure it was working for FRF91 the last few posts in that thread indicated an unlocked boot loader last time I looked.
I thought the update was to fix the security hole that allowed that

I have read a lot of comments on the guide of how root the nexus without unlocking the bootloader and searched in other places but couldn't find an answer to my question...
I've got at&t version nexus unrooted and I updated it to FRF91 OTA.
can I use this guide to root it without unlocking the bootloader?
If I can, how do I do it? some people wrote that I need to use Passimg.zip
but I think It's for T-mo version only because at&t's version doesn't have the erf79 (I hope I wrote it right).
anyway I'm really confused. can someone please explain?

Stock Galaxy S6, OTA safe?

Hi everyone,
I have a stock Tmobile Galaxy S6 that I bought on release day and that I haven't touched since while waiting for the 40 days to elapse so that I can unlock it and use it on AT&T. Unforunately Tmobile screwed something up and it's been 2 months now and I still can't unlock it through the unlock application and I'm not receiving the emails their customer service is supposedly sending me.
The phone keeps nagging me for OTA updates, I haven't done any yet. If I do accept the ETA, does that close any doors or make rooting more difficult? My goal is to eventually flash the unified G92xF/I/T Galaxy S6 Universal Deodexed Mod edition ROM.
Thanks!
Maybe a little more difficult than 5.0.2, but you just gotta follow the correct steps. It will however, trip knox. Did you try searching for the email manually? I had that problem once and had to search manually because they didn't show up for some reason

I did search for the email and never received it. The tricky part is I had my friend bought it for me so all customer service calls go through him. I'm about to leave on vacation abroad and at this point I don't care if it's unlocked because I won't be roaming anyway, I just want the latest official fixes and enhancements without jeopardizing my ability to flash custom roms when I get back. The reason why I'm not flashing the custom ROM yet is because I think they get rid of the Tmobile unlock application which I'll need in the future when Tmobile gets their act together.
Sounds good! When you say it will trip Knox, are you saying that in regards of having to flash a custom recovery for the ROM I mentioned? If so whether I stay at 5.0.2 or update to the latest firmware wouldn't change that right?
If you are planning to flash a 5.1.1 rom then yes you will have to trip knox on 5.0.2 or 5.1.1 bootloader. Updating to full 5.1.1 firmware is recommended for this, otherwise fingerprint reader will not work. Now, there is a way to not trip knox on 5.1.1 but you will lose that fingerprint functionality. There is also a method to not trip on 5.0.2 and retain fingerprint functionality but you can only flash 5.0.2 Roms
I was just browsing the forum and came across a post that linked to a new way for unlocking the Tmobile S6 using Android SIM Unlocker. It looks very promising so I may actually be unlocked within the next 24 hours. So you recommend that no matter what I let the OTA update my phone to 5.1.1 before flashing anything in order to retain fingerprint reader functionality? I intend on running 5.1.1 and not staying on 5.0.2.
The ROM instructions say: "If you're experiencing ANY issue, then first make sure that you're on the latest bootloader/firmware (see post #4 for latest one for your model), and that you've done an clean install (data/factory reset before installing the ROM)."

What root method should I use??

Hello everyone. I have a question in regards to rooting my S6. My s6 has version 5.0.2 and the OCG baseband. Should I upgrade to 5.1.1 before I root? I would like to root without tripping the Knox counter. Also, if I were to root without tripping knox, would I have to use this method every time I flash a new rom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
just update to 5.1.1 and flash unibase kernel, why do you care about knox? it doesnt really matter if you trip it you still have insurance through your carrier, seriously knox is really only there for companies who provide phones to their employees and dont want them to mess with them.

I can understand that, but I would like to keep from tripping my knox counter. Anyways, I just rooted via PingPong successfully. How do I keep from triggering knox now that I am rooted? Can I flash TWRP or any other kind or recovery?? Thanks.
no, if you want to keep from tripping your knox counter you cant really do anyhting. flashing any kind of custom recovery or rom or kernel will trip it, all you can really do is just stay rooted and thats about it

Rooting Questions

Hi Experts,
I am plannign on rooting my SM-G925T butu I have a couple of questions before I continue, I have an out of the box version and not updated yet as far as I know, it is currently on 5.0.2. I see a guide to Root but it is for 5.11.
- Is it better to update my phone first before rooting as the guide I saw for rooting without tripping knox is for 5.11.
Thats all my question for today, I may think of something else later though.
Thanks
You can root 5.1.1 without tripping Knox, but that means your fingerprint scanner will be rendered useless.
Personally, I stayed on 5.0.2, rooted with PingPongRoot and flashed a debloated ROM using FlashFire — all with Knox still intact.
If you want to root without tripping knox and have functioning fingerprint reader, stay on 5.0.2 and root using ping pong as stated by above poster

OK guys I have a question that I am not sure is the right thread but I need to SIM unlock my phone. The only ways currently out needs the phone to be rooted. I have a question of a plan I have and wondering if you guys would know if it works?
I plan to do what you said above and root 5.0.2
Get the phone unlocked.
Then flash the stock rom and get rid of root.
And then upgrade to 5.1.1.
Do you guys happen to know if this will work without messing with my fingerprint reader? Thanks!

You cannot root 5.1.1 DOI1 without tripping Knox since Samsung updated the bootloader and we don't have an engineering bootloader for it. If you were on 5.1.1 COF6/8, you could still use the engineering bootloader while sacrificing the fingerprint scanner and Samsung Pay. As long as you don't trip Knox or use a custom recovery, you can still use Samsung Pay after flashing back to stock.
So who ever is on 5.1.1 DOI1 non rooted stock(brand new phone) and attempt to flash custom rom ,root phone etc will not be able to revert to stock (like from the box) and will lose SamPay and Fingerprint scanner?
In case we root, we will Tripp Knox and disable Fingerprint scanner?

I'm using Looper 2.0. There really aren't that many options for those still on 5.0.2; it seems like the only other one is XtreStoLite. You may have more luck in the Unified Development forums, though I'm not sure if you'll be able to take advantage of T-Mobile specific features (like WiFi calling) on 'universal' ROMs.
I almost forgot to add: it's absolutely essential that you remove the boot.img from any ZIP before flashing or else you'll end up tripping Knox.
I was already looking at XtreStoLite. Do you know if its Aroma installer options work with FlashFire?
Im on this version of 5.1.1. and looking to root. I don't care about knox. I only care about the fingerprint scanner which I am under the impression only gets disabled with that developer bootloader used for not tripping knox. Anyways I flashed a version of TWRP which worked but wouldn't let my phone boot. Itd get stuck on the Samsung screen (not bootloop). I got the recovery is not seandroid enforcing message. I managed to get back to stock after that but Can someone point me into the right direction for which TWRP or CWM I should flash and or kernel after that. I just want to get a rom on this thing. Might as well since ive already tripped Knox.

You have the "engineering root kernel" or engineering sboot, aka bootloader?
If you have the sboot all you need is a sepolicy patched kernel for the device to boot.
Edit: Here is the G920A_OJ7_Sepolicy_Patched_Kernel.tar.md5 which should allow the device to boot with a rooted system assuming what you have is the engineering bootloader for the G920A OJ7 build. Warranty bit may be tripped.

An eng sboot is an unlocked bootloader so the sky is the limit, e.g. custom recovery, kernel, root.
Never heard of an eng kernel but it would likely have to be permissive to allow you to push in root via sbin.
Is it permissive?
My rooted G920A 5.1.1 OJ7 reads "-eng" after the kernel version (paid $40 for remote root, I do not have the file). No troubles at all, reboots fine... Maybe somebody else also working on these?

That is correct, I just checked with root checker. I guess an engineering bootloader would make it boot again? Unless the newer "eng" ones are locked also.

An engineering, unlocked bootloader will allow you to flash a patched kernel that will allow the device to boot with traditional root, i.e. a modified system.
I did some googling yesterday and thought I came across an eng G920A sboot.bin, aka bootloader (the website mistakenly called it an eng kernel). If its legit it should do the trick once paired with the patched kernel, aka boot.img, I previously posted. But I don't own a G920A so can't test.

An engineering, unlocked bootloader will allow you to flash a patched kernel that will allow the device to boot with traditional root, i.e. a modified system.

I own one and since now own a Nexus 6P, it just sits around doing nothing. More than happy to test. Worst case I'm back to stock via Odin. Point me to the files and I'll test. I'll already tried this route once and lost root trying so I'm willing to do it again.
