What phone do you have? If, as I'm assuming, you have a Samsung phone, but it's not the i537, this thread might be what you're looking for. I used it to deodex NE3 on this phone and it seems to work well for deodexing stock Samsung phones in general.

Btw, the op should state clearly for what variant of active this thread is. Basically for the people new in this forum.

This forum is for the Galaxy S4 Active. There are two variants, the one you have (i9295) which is the international version, and the i537, which is the U.S. (A.T.&T.) version. They are similar in hardware and yet many things are not compatible between phones.
You have a good point that maybe the op should specify which variant of the active this is for, but this is posted in the correct forum.
As far as I know this tool won't work for your phone but the one I linked to in my last post will.

Anyone have any trouble uninstalling apps (user or system) after flashing this? If I try to uninstall anything (either through the Play Store, with the system installer/uninstaller, or with Titanium Backup) most of the time it causes a reboot (I think a hotboot or something because it doesn't go through Safestrap or show the full boot animation on the restart) and more importantly the app I wanted to uninstall is still there. I just figured out I can uninstall user apps by deleting the appropriate apk file from /data/app/ using root-enabled ES File Explorer but I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue or any idea how to address it. I don't even know if this issue is related to deodexing, I just started having this issue after I deodexed using this tool.

Looks promising. I like that it doesn't trip KNOX but will the "custom status" be a problem?
I'm 7 days into this phone, still have a week to return/exchange it if something is defective. So far it's running fine, dont foresee need to take it back.
But .............. If I did need to return it, is there an "unroot" and/or a way to remove the custom status ?
*** EDIT *** I haven't read all the way thru the root thread, so if my question has already been answered I apologize.
No Custom Status
I have now rooted twice, flashing the firmware posted in this forum in the middle. My phone has not shown custom on the bootscreen once. I also encrypt before I root, so maybe thats it. Who knew you could be encrypted with root?
Have you uninstall all the att bloatware without problems? Or used greenify to improve battery life?

Yes, all the typical rooting items work as they should. You can even flash zips with fireflash, and not trip Knox.
It's NOT in the bootscreen where you can see the custom status. It's in settings / about device / status. In the last line it crearly says "Custom" under Device status.

You'll generally have to manually flash updates once you've rooted, the OTA process will usually refuse to update a device running a modified system image. Not that big a problem, but sometimes it confuses people.

Or, install Samsung drivers, then Odin, and flash a stock image that way to return to stock, then OTA works fine. There is another thread around here with a stock image, I'd suggest anyone looking to return to stock in order to complete an OTA, to review that thread.

Would we be able to use fireflash and keep root if somebody were to get the OTA and customize it for our needs to keep root, etc? I know it's a hard question to answer, but maybe you guys have experience with other locked bootloader devices.

This is similar to how we did it on the AT&T S4 using safestrap to flash touchwiz based roms that were pre-rooted. Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to flash non-touchwiz based roms without an unlocked bootloader.

It seems that many 925A'ers are not leaving this forum to find out that YES, we have root! The unnecessary questions, comments, doubts are starting to pile up, so maybe this is the best way to ensure everyone knows that YES (again), we have root. If that won't drive you crazy, it should at least get you warned for not following forum rules and searching instead of posting for no reason..... If that user searched, they would have easily found this thread showing you exactly how to root the 925A!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3103016
To be 110% clear....... this was developed by @idler1984, NOT me, so thank them - all credit goes to them, I'm just trying to keep the 925A forum cleared up if at all possible!
ENJOY!
EDIT - and because someone asked........ Root has been achieved for both OCE and the 5.13.15 OE2 update
EDIT 2 - and because more people can't read, you CANNOT root anything past May 15th builds, so none of the OF_ updates, nothing that comes out after May 15th, so don't update unless you want to lose root! The information is all there in the thread linked above, if you don't read, you don't have anyone to blame but yourself!
Good job. Was thinking of doing the same.
omg thank you. by the way that first quote was mine sorry. and i did search to no avail. thanks a bunch for clearing this up. and ill try to be more thorough with my search next time.

Okay, that makes sense then, OC9 instead of what I thought you were talking about, "OE9" which I guess does not exist (yet?)
They skipped that one because OE2 is out and there's no need to get the build in the middle developed, from what I can tell.... I've been wrong before though! Just hit your software update and get OE2 then root that, it has the most updates we're going to see before 5.1.1 comes out next month (still more speculating, but that's an informed guess this time based on lots of reading up on the new Galaxy from across the web)

2. No new ROM can be supported as bug has been fixed.
Full story:
New bootloader blocks downgrading, be careful installing 5.1.1 OTA!
Kernel built after May 15th (including some 5.0.2 and all 5.1.1) have this bug fixed. Be cautious when installing OTA these days and FlashFire might be your best shot of upgrading systems. Use Odin to unroot and receive OTA if you want.

You can't downgrade if you're already on 5.0, and even if you could, you can't install anything beyond Touchwiz (Samsung) based ROMs because of a locked bootloader.

Thank you for posting this question because I am in the exact same situation. I have an AT&T Galaxy S 5 Android 5.1.1. I was never interesting in rooting my phone until just recently and have been doing some light reading on Life Hacker to learn more and it brought me here. I just wanted to clarify your comment above. Are you saying that having the phone that I/we have we are completely out of luck if we wanted to root/modify our phones? Forever or just until something changes down the road?
Well I sold my at&t s5 and ordered a unlocked tmobile s5 to use on at&t with my sim card because you can root the tmobile version. I hope one day soon someone will figure out how to root it I believe it will be done soon just keep checking back on here.

I don't think that will work, the firmware listed there is 4.4.2 which is KitKat, you can not downgrade to KK if you are on lollipop or marshmallow, you could soft brick or worse. I would not attempt this unless you are actually on KK.

For future reference, don't give these unsure ideas to people and tell them to update their phones like this. At the moment, YOU CANNOT GET ROOTED LOLLIPOP 100% of the time unless you were/are on 4.4.2 KitKat with root (use Towelroot) and update through muniz_ri's update method. Trying to downgrade to KitKat will result in a bricked device as the thread previously mentioned.
The reason why root persists on 5.0 when you update it via this method is due to using the older bootloader which doesn't verify the system's integrity the same way the newer bootloaders do.
