Is there a way to change the carrier display name on the I9305/I9300 S3? I have tried all the methods online even the eri.xml file and no luck? I want to edit mine to read display Chinese characters... could this be the reason why? Thanks!
are you on a CUSTOM ROM or STOCK?

CUSTOM: yes. can be found in the SETTINGS menu, varies from ROM to ROM. But you'll find it if you go through

Hi,
I plan to root a HTC Desire C only for sim unlocking it. So far I am pleased with the original firmware (ICS 4.0) - after disabling some apps the phone runs fast and smooth.
The question is: does rooting modify the original OS in such a way that instabilities may occur?
Thanks.

Rooting itself doesn't modify anything besides installing an app called Superuser.
You deleting/disabling apps that were not meant to be disabled does.

Thank you for the related link. Helpful.
As I like, for the moment, to stick to the original firmware (to me, it is the most stable among all avalable roms for HTC Desire C), I still have two more questions:
- will the rooting stop the handset from receiving official updates?
- assume I root the handset and install cwm recovery and backup the current rom.
if ever I like to restore this backup, I will need to flash a kernel boot.img.
can I extract the kernel related to my current firmware so I can flash it after I restore?
Thanks.

- As far as I know, you can receive updates but you cannot apply them. It will show in the notifications "Software Update, Click to download" when you download it, it will reboot to recovery and stop there. Again, I'm not 100% sure about this but this happened to me once.
- If you flash a custom kernel like Prometheus Kernel, then you will have to flash the stock boot.img if you wanna go back to stock completely. But if you never changed your kernel from stock, then you don't need to do anything. I have provided the link to stock kernel and stock recovery as well, in the Index thread. (Link in my signature)
PS - As far as Custom ROMs go, you should try the Sense Roms. All of them are based on the stock ROM so all of them are completely stable. You can always put the 'Stock theme' on these roms to make them look like the Stock ROM and you will end up with a ROM that looks exactly like Stock but performs much better and has increased functionality
Hope this was helpful. I'll be glad to answer any further questions.
It will not definitely modify your system it will add a folder to your system to access the system... and also it adds app called Superuser or SuperSU ....
Features of Rooting:
Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem.
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system. Most of the time,[citation needed] rooting a device voids its warranty.

A custom recovery is like a "hub" that lets you control your system without fully booting your phone. You can flash zips, manage files, install apps, etc...
A ROM is a package designed specifically for a device that changes the look, features, customisability and more it. Example: HTC phones use the "Sense" ROM. This has custom features like BlinkFeed, HTC Lockscreen, Different look and feel. Samsung phones use TouchWiz, a bubble-like fun looking blue ROM. This is why even if 2 devices have Android 6.0.0, one can look one way, and the other completely different.
S-OFF BASICALLY means that the /system partition can be written and modified, allowing tons of customization options. (pretty much a full root) You can achieve it a number of different ways, but most used is a tool called Unrevoked. (Look it up, it's a pretty huge topic)
Hi,
I have received an email notification from SONY stating that there was an update available for my device (v. 47.2.A.2.33) and described a few ways to proceed with the update - however, none worked. All methods stopped right in the beginning stating "no updates available".
SONY support could not help, either. They were asking me for patience until the update reaches me and I will be notified - but I had already been notified...
Anyway, is there a way to bypass the waiting line and force-get the version now, instead of waiting (who knows for how long)?
The device is an operator-free version, so I am not tied to any vendor mercy.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Csani
Just use Xpericheck to download the firmware version you want. Then use NewFlasher to flash it.
No need to rooting, unlocked bootloader or anything fancy.

Just upgrade it yourself, you won't damage the phone or change your warranty status.
Look on Xperiafirm and find a 47.2.A.4.45 buld that is for your region, although any EU region would be fine, US versions have fingerprint and VoLTE disabled for some reason. Customised version is a good option as doesn't contain any provider bloatware. My choice would be Customized DE.
Download Newflasher and put it in the same folder as the firmware you downloaded from Xperiafirm
Delete Userdataxxx.sin and files ending in .ta . This will ensure that you don't lose any personal data. Also delete persist*.sin to avoid losing android attest key.
Then start newflasher.exe and follow instrctions.
You might need a copy of the Sony driver
I would make a backup with Xperia transfer before you do anything, if the phone is glitchty after your rebuild, then factory reset it and then restore from the backup.
Can somebody tell me EXACTLY (or give me the link for it) the explanation of what's the difference between a regular stock rom and its Customised DE counterpart? It was my understanding deleting pre-installed apps like Facebook or Spotify (not just disable them) was impossible, flashing customised roms solves the problem?

Customized DE is a regular stock rom. It just means that it's meant for the German market and not tied to any operator like Vodaphone etc. Customized UK would be for the UK market and so on.
There's not much difference between the customizations (although operator specific ones probably won't work with other ones and you shouldn't flash them). Some don't have all the features (US might not have fingerprint sensor enabled, some don't have VoLTE...). All have some preinstalled apps (or bloatware if you wish) mut the actual apps might vary - some have more, some less and some just ha e different useless **** instead of other.
So the "Customized xx" here refers to stock rom, not a custom rom. You can flash any Customized x for your phone even with a locked bootloader but "Custom ROM" like LineageOS or AOSPExtended would need an unlocked bootloader.
Also if you want to remove the bloatware completely you'll need root (and unlocked bootloader). But before you do that, please back up TA and read carefully about how it changes your phone in ways that can't be reversed.
Is there any other place to download the .ftf file?
Xpericheck.com redirects me to alfafile.net but I don't have premium account and cannot download the file

Pretty sure flashtool can make one from the files you download from Xperiafirm
Worked, thanks

Yes. And you probably have the "Customized xx" rom already on your device (unless you have an operator specific ROM).
Hi !
I would like to buy chinese version but i have a question first.
What are advantages an inconvenients if th chinese ROM ?
I hope there's not any bloatware or spyware on chinese ROM
Thanks
i heard chinese has call recording available, could not find confirmation though
In my experience the Chinese ROM was surprisingly liveable with, but did have a collection of small quirks:
1) You can configure it to *nearly* eliminate instances of seeing Chinese text, but not all. Things like; if you had the 'Weather' alarm set, you would get a weather report in Chinese. Also, there is an AI that could take over your calls for you - it would speak to people in Chinese (and if you engaged it accidentally, all text was in Chinese so v hard to disable...
2) I found that long app names would spill over onto another line mid word
3) Trying to change font would bring up only Chinese options
4) No option to enable Google Discover on the -1 menu
5) Google Backups wouldn't work
6) Deliveroo (UK app) wouldn't allow login via Google
On the upside, Google Pay worked perfectly as did banking apps. I found it pretty easy to get rid of most Chinese apps (or put them in a folder, out of the way)
I eventually flashed to a Xiaomi.EU rom which is essentially perfect and resolves all the above. Its based on the Chinese ROM so keeps all the latest features available within it (including call recording, which the Global versions apparently don't have).
After flashing EU, bootloader has to remain unlocked?
I mean is it safe to relock it?

Bootloader has to remain unlocked, yes. As I understand it, relocking would brick your phone (if you're not on the stock ROM).

And you don't need it locked anyway. Everything works ok without it using the EU ROM. There is no loss of security.
