People who have the white N5 know that the back and the sides are actually two pieces (may be the same with black version, but looks like one piece). Either way, I can imagine a solid color vinyl backing (cut out the NEXUS with an exacto knife) and trimming around the bezel. Question is, what type of vinyl would be good for this?

Yes. The only problem is that the tax. When fed ex deliver it they still charge for tax. So its much better to buy in bulk.
