Question About Loose Back Covers - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all!
I've been very pleased with my new Nexus so far, but yesterday I noticed the back cover was loose and and had a bit of a gap near the volume buttons. Some quick googling informed me this was a known issue, and is easily RMA'd. I have also discovered there are some very nice skins from Slickwraps and from Toast which can be used in place of the back cover. I find these to be very beautiful, and will most likely use one. Knowing this, is there any useful reason to send my phone in to be replaced? Has anyone discovered a flawed battery causing the cover to lift? If so, was it obvious before removing the cover?

I would be afraid that if I didn't get the phone replaced, it would leak if you ever got around water. I think I would send it back because if you ever decide to sell it you won't get much for a phone that doesn't have a tight fitting backup cover.

Those are both good points, but they are somewhat nullified by my plans. I'm going to be removing the back cover to use an aftermarket back. I will, of course, be fully responsible for protecting it from water, and for the damage if I don't. I tend to treat any device, water resistant or not, as if it were the Wicked Witch of the West and will melt upon contact with a drop of water. I also don't sell my old phones. They are way to useful to keep around for projects and such. I still have a couple of Blackberry Storms acting as desk clocks and a Galaxy Nexus doing tattle-tail duty for my home alarm system.
Basically what I'm looking for is any indication as to an actual malfunction being the cause of the back coming unstuck. As it stands, the loose back is a head start on getting it off for an aftermarket.

I say go for it as long as the new back cover fits tight. I am a snob about having a perfect phone.

Most the skins cover the back cover so need an intact backcover or have the same problem. Will see when remove back cover if it is battery related but then most likely can't RMA as you opened the device. It a catch 22 situation.

I'm looking at the wooden covers. They're a bit thicker then the vinyl skins, and can sit flush with the frame when used without the back. They're rigid enough to do the job, though not advertised as backs, folk are reporting having success.
I am tempted to open it up and have a peek at the battery, but doing so would definitely void the warranty. That's why I was looking for any examples where a battery actually has gone bad. Though, it looks like the battery is pretty simple to replace anyway...

Usually swells up in the middle and starts raising the back at the mid points.

Does it feel swollen? Can you tell by eye? The only ones I've witnessed having a dying battery had removable battery covers, like the Storm and the old Razr flip phones. My cover is only loose on one edge, and feels very firmly stuck the rest of the way around. The phone itself is functioning beautifully, not at all like the few I've seen the the grow-a-battery of death. They usually sputtered and gave up until I replaced the battery.

If it's the battery will do the same. Will start acting up and then die. There is a thread somewhere in General I think with pics of expanding battery. Some just the backs come unglued. It is definitely a RMA situation anyway.

Taking the battery cover off my HD2?

Hello, I have still yet to take the battery cover off my HD2 since it's brand new, and I need to know the least effortless way to take it off without damaging. I have tried with the little slot by pulling up on it but haven't tried very hard and it never comes off. I'm afraid of breaking it.... Help?

Yeah, you've got the right idea there...it's built to have tension so it takes a bit of effort to get it open. First, that little slot is indeed for your nail to help pop it open...now, when you pull on it, do it as if the opposite side (with the volume buttons) is a hinge, and the door needs to swing open like that. I place one of my thumbs on the "hinge" side, and pull up on the other. Once it snaps up about an inch, I lift my thumb and it comes right off. Putting it back on is the exact opposite...first seat the side with the volume buttons securely (this takes some practice), and then swing it closed and snap down on the notch side.
Ugh, that sounds really difficult. This is actually making me regret my decision of buying the HD2. I love everything about it but this stuipid battery cover. Why couldn't it take up the entire middle-bottom of the phone!

Thanks, but I can't view the movie. Shows up as a white square...
don't worry about it really, your finger isn't going to damage the metal battery cover. it just pops right off.
i hold the phone with my right hand on the top and bottom and push the slot with my left thumb, easy peasy.
I'm not worried about the battery cover, just the phone. I've had it since Wednesday and have been phoneless for the past 2 weeks...
Just pull on it its not going to damage your phone, I do it every day.
Its really not that hard to do, you're making it a bigger deal than it actually is. Its made out of metal so I think you will be ok.
come on purple lama lover! just do it; don't be a pink lama

I'm very meticulous when it comes to cosmetics. At night, when I'm not using my phone I wrap it in a lint free sunglass cloth, then in a layer of bubble wrap, then in a small bubble wrap lined packaging envelope, then in a larger bubble wrap lined shipping envelope, and then in a prefectly sized cardboard box that I put very carefully in a drawer. Lol, but the case and all it's openings fit perfect.

Makes me believe that you may need to see a doctor. Your worries are baseless and way too superficial.
You're regretting buying the HD2 because of the battery cover? For real? Definitely don't get an evo then. That one feels like it could snap at any moment when you try to take it off. At least the HD2's is metal.
This is a joke, right? How are you going to damage a metal battery cover? What are you using to take it off, The Jaws of Life?
Just take it off. You won't damage it at all. I know it feels like its just going to rip apart but the HD2 can take it

This is what works for me
1) Phone face down
2) Stick your fingernail in the bottom left corner of the metal cover and lift it up. Voila.
Pocketnow technique didn't really work for me. Almost felt like I was going to break it.
There seriously is a thread about how to remove the battry cover???

My back cover won't snap on properly

I've owned other samsung phones and didn't have a problem snapping those on. For some reason however, three of the snap points on the side with the notch opening will not snap into place no matter how much I push down. I attached a photo. There are six snap points. The top two around the notch opening and the bottom one snaps on easily, but the three in-between do not, causing a nice hump. I've tried fiddling with the snaps on the back cover, but honestly you can't really move them from what I can tell, since there's nothing to move. Tried pushing them one way or another with pliers, but its really wishful thinking that it changed anything. So what am I doing wrong? I'm not 100% sure if the back cover was snapped on completely when I took it off the back for the first time, but I have never been able to snap those three points, ever. Also tried to take a picture of the back cover snaps but all my pics are blurry.
katamari201, I would suggest you refrain from toying around with the back cover thus avoiding a possible physical damage. I also suggest you take it to your nearest authorized Samsung service centre. If your device is still within the warranty period, you can get a replacement cover without bearing any charge.

It's an import so I don't have that luxury. I could send it back to expansys for warranty...but just for this? I can live with it, but want to fix it somehow.

I bought a couple of TPU cases only $1.40 a pop. I think I'll just put the phone in it and remove the back cover altogether.

Took me this long to finally figure out how to snap the two clips in. Yes the design is defective, liable for improper finishes to screw it all up. LIke I said, I never had too many issues with previous galaxy snap on back covers, but this one was a doozy. Had two clips un-snapped for the longest time using original cover. Bought a metallic blue cover that won't snap on properly period, goes in and pops right back out, on all but the bottom side, which I didn't snap into place I just tucked into the holes.
Decided to try properly snapping all the clips on the original cover again. Lots of pushing down and thinking the phone will break. I finally did it, and it was REALLY LOUD snap for those two or three clips. They were not normal. Had to put the phone face down on my palm, insert the cover at an angle pushing heavily down on the side where the unsnappable clips were, and pushing the side heavily down while bending the rest of it upwards, forcing it at an angle. THe usual snap on bottom and move upwards on both sides all the way to the top did not apply for those two clips, whereas everything else snapped on easily, so I had to do those two clips first, and do them at an angle and bend the cover upward to make a large angle, because just pushing down on it when the cover is flat on the back will do absolutely nothing and basically be on the road to breaking the phone. The aftermarket metallic cover wouldn't even stay in any of the holes, just popped right back out. I really hate this snap on design. Samsung needs to learn to make deeper snaps or use a slide on design, and there is plenty of room for that since the chrome sides are so thick anyway.
Ugh I am so tired of poor samsung build quality. The note uses the same scratchable chrome sides as the S2, same cheap back and weak snap-on design. There's a reason why all the Samsung phones at my local AT&T have tape on the back along the battery seam.

Dealing with cracks?

Anyone have suggestions for dealing with cracks on an out of warranty TP?
I sent my Touchpad back in February when it was in warranty, and got a new case. Then the girlfriend liked the fit on my TP better and insisted that I trade her for hers which hadn't had any issue and hadn't been back for repair.
Well, it now has cracks. There are two cracks leading from the speaker openings onto the back of the case that I was ignoring. Now there's a crack from one of the speakers to the front, which is more threatening since if the other side of that cracks the thin piece will come off...
It's like the poor TP is falling apart. I've had it in the official HP case the whole time and am extremely careful with it, of course, everyone knows that doesn't really help. It seems some of the cases were just destined to crack!
So is there anything to be done? Does anyone know how much HP charges if you PAY them to fix it? Probably too much.
What about a Skinomi case like this: http://www.skinomi.com/hp-touchpad-carbon-fiber-skin-protector.html - will that help keep piece next to the speaker from cracking the rest of the way, and maybe at least.. *sigh*... hide the other cracks?
I have a feeling that I will eventually have a pile of loose electronics in my hand here....

I know what you mean about the cracking - I think all TP users share our remorse.
I don't know what HP charges, or even if that's an option with them, considering how quickly they dropped any sort of support for us after launch.
What I've done in regards to the cracking is just dab a small amount of super glue on/in the cracked plastic (while paying mind to the speakers!) and hold it there for a hot second. Then, I throw back on the official HP case and pretend the cosmetic issue doesn't exist...... Until I find a new crack..... and then, it's rinse and repeat.
As for the Skinomi protector, I don't have one (although highly contemplating getting one, now) but, you can find it cheaper on Amazon. However, this SKIN got better reviews, plus it's cheaper!
/sigh
I also had my case replaced due to cracking around the speakers. From the sound of it, it may just always happen. I plan to just put dabs of super glue if it starts again, and not worry about it. I've heard some people saying they think it's from using a case (ie putting too much pressure on it), and others saying it's just a manufacturing defect. Unless it completely falls apart, it shouldn't really cause problems, hopefully. If anything, maybe just put it in some case, even like a TPU wrap.
the cracks on my speakers have gotten way worse
the cracks propagated to the back side, plus, cracks appear on the microusb connector as well
i feel it's cuz of the official case that's causing it
the tablet is always home, does not get that much use, it's mostly just sitting around
anyways, looking at the skinomi link, it looks pretty promising
it will hide the cracks for sure, plus, i have always hated the matte finish on the back because it's a dirt magnet

Honestly, though I can't see *how* the official case can be causing the problem.
Many people had cracks when their devices were brand new, and didn't have the case because it still cost like fiddy bux at the time. HP even tried sending out cases to people as a preventative.
Also, I "manage" four Touchpads. So far, mine is the only one that has cracked - twice now. The others also use the official case. However, only two of them get used heavily, mine and the girlfriend's. She insists that I must be rough with my Touchpad, but I am definitely not rough with it - I am extremely careful. Her case shows scars from being dropped, chewed on by dogs(!), etc... but no cracks.
I wonder if there's a "usage scenario" that causes something internal to heat causing the cracks. But I've never noticed my TP getting excessively hot. It's just whether or not you got a good backplate or not.
When I had my first Touchpad repaired under warranty, the new backplate it came with had a fit much better than any of the others we'd bought. It fit perfectly flush with the glass and had no uneven spots around the edge. None of the other Touchpads we have matched that level of fit. Unfortunately, my girlfriend took that Touchpad to gift to someone else, and left me with one of the ones that had a less than perfect fit. I think the level of fit of the original backplate has a lot to do with whether or not it cracks.
I did find a place online that sells replacement backplates, but they're like $50 a pop... Not worth it even for those of us that paid $200 for our 32gb touchpads. http://www.portatronics.com/product_info.php?info=p10245_HP-Touchpad-Backplate-Part-Only.html -- I don't know anything about that site or the part. Oddly enough, it also isn't listed if you search by category on their website. I could only find it by google search. It lets me add it to the cart, but who knows if it is actually available.
Shortly after I noticed the cracks I bought a Stealtharmor cover for the back while it was on sale.. Nearly a year later and the cracks haven't gotten any worse.

[Q] Back damaged due to flip case?

Hi everybody!
The past 3 months, i've been the proud owner of an HTC one, but something has been bothering me for some time now: even though i am very careful with my phone and keep the case on it at all times, the back has accumulated quite a lot of small 'craters'. These only seem to appear where the back should be protected by the hard part of my official htc one double dip flip case. I have checked time and time again if there was any sand in between, and there never was any, nor was there anything else in there.
I will try to post a decent picture later on, but i was wondering: what should i do? Do i have any chance to get a new device?

You should use a TPU case. I got myself the Cimo one. It's flexible and offer all around protection, except for the speaker grills. Just clean it inside as a precaution before putting your phone in there. Your flip case obviously got some debris inside which pressed against the soft aluminium back of the phone when you closed it and put it in your pocket or bag.

I just did that last night. The OtterBox Commuter has the best protection v/s slimness.I got myself the black one. I really wanted the Glacier model but the colors in reality do not match what you see in the rendered pictures. The light grey is actually absolutely white and the darker grey is actually light grey. I don't want a white case as my phone is black for a reason - no worries about dust, etc making it look dirty.

Avoid the case, it's crap. I've got the double dip too which has been fine although some people have said that it also has scratched their One, so take care with it.
A silicon case is obviously the safest choice but then again it's not going to be the prettiest either.
I've actually not got anything on mine at all now, I love the aesthetics of the phone and putting a case on it is just going to spoil that.
Have never dropped it yet (touch wood) and if I ever break it then i'll just get another one anyway so not really bothered too much.
PS: The urban cases are pretty good, you should check them out if youre looking for something rugged and decent looking.

Moto G6 lterally coming apart at the seam

Hi, I have an almost 2 year old Moto G6 (just the G6, not Play or Plus). Had it in the same case that length of time. About a month ago, found it was hard to press the power button. I finally just took it out of the case, and in doing so, found the allegedly permanently sealed back cover was coming loose on the side with the power button as well as the bottom where the USB-C jack is. Looks like the adhesive is stretchy but no longer very tacky, and trying to manually press the back cover into place is futile as it won't stay and won't even go all the way in. The phone still works, and after removing it from the case, I now see the power button is fine. I assume it's out of warranty now, I think 1 year and I have no add-on protection plan on my T-Mobile bill. I seen videos of people removing the back cover with a heat gun and razor blade to replace the battery. On what I can see, doesn't look like my battery is bulging. Tempted to crazy glue where the cover is separating, but I doubt that would hold with the pressure that makes the cover pull out again once pushed down. I would think at this point I could carefully just manually remove the whole back cover by hand.My dexterity is awful on repairing small delicate things. Can a shop repair this fairly cheaply? Any advice? I'm in Ohio/USA. Thanks!
I took mine out of the case tonight to clean it and discovered I have exactly the same problem! My case is such that if I put the phone back in it, the case "snaps" together and hence keeps the phone together. Mine is probably two years old too, so I'm sure no fix is possible (but I'll keep my eye on this thread). I'll leave the case on and begin looking for a new phone.
I'm with Sprint so I'm anticipating the conversion to TMo, so I'd rather wait until that happens before I buy a new one.

I thought maybe excessive heat and sweat from being in my pocket on hot days loosened it up.
Thanks for the replies FrogFan and Ragarianok. Sorry for the long delay. In the meantime, I got the back case half off, and indeed a swollen battery. I am going to order a new battery for $4 from Mobile Defenders in MI, battery image says Motorola on it, and they say authorized OEM. A nearby repair shop said they will put it in for $20. They said a decent battery should run $20+, but all those higher priced ones on ebay and Amazon are no-names.
Thanks for coming back, dannykewl. I wasted some time inquiring about a fix from Motorola and found out that their "fix" would cost more than the phone was worth. A local shop quoted a ridiculously high price to fix it, too, but they did say the problem could be caused by a swollen battery. I will check with other local shops to see what they'd charge to replace the battery and seal it back up.
Did you get yours fixed?
POP!
My phone separated today and it is a swollen battery. I suspected for about 2 months the battery was swelling because of pressure points showing up on the screen as bright circles. I was just going to buy a new phone as this was a cheap phone and 2 years old, but the battery did the hard work for me by separating the phone from it's back, so I decided to fix. I removed the battery, ordered replacement battery on ebay and will put back together myself for $12. The $4 batteries are out of stock. The phone has enough stickiness left to hold the backplate and phone together on it's own, and it'll be in the phone case so no worries. Might apply a little Elmers to the surround. From what I read online, and saw on Youtube, be careful with the back, it's actually a glass metal hybrid and not safety glass at that. It will shatter off the metal and into little tiny razors and knives. The screen artifacts disappeared when the back was removed, relieving pressure on the components mashing up against the screen from the inside.. No permanent damage. This new battery should tide me over long enough for the affordable 5g phones to come out. I don't buy pricey phones. Oh, fyi... this is a SUPER easy repair. Have faith and go for it.
I took mine to a local repair shop today and confirmed my problem was also a swelling battery. They will replace the battery for me for $75.
