wp8.1 system partition filling up? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

lately i've noticed that my "system" keeps growing in size as seen through storage sense. it's a slow, but steady, growth.. after a factory reset i believe it was around 2.60gb, and now it's grown to 3.04gb. i've heard elsewhere that anything above 3.0gb is "abnormal" -- what would cause this to grow like that? is this normal, and is there any way to clean it up? i have 8.1 GDR2 with full fs access.

It's normal for windows phone though... It does grow a bit as time being. You know, in Windows 10 Mobile my system partition grows up to 4gb, which eats up all my left space. After a clean up, I only have 1.4gb left internal storage. I guess only a reset will solve the problem.

Applications Data , Uncompleted Store and Phone Update Downloads and unknown files you have stored on your phone (like mkv , xap , appx , appxbundle , mpg and any other file types it's unknown for the system ) may increase system and Other storage size . you can use storage cleaner app by GoodDayToDie to clean up a bit but maybe not too much helpful .

Real System partition can't grow. The only increasing thing on it is registry. So, those are system files on user partition. It can be even IE cache.

would you have a link? can't find it in the store..

[Q] Critical Storage memory with nothing in it a t all!PLS help!

Hello Everyone!
I'm experiencing an issue with my touch Diamond.
Usually, I put nothing on my storage memory, I put all my data on the Internal storage.so, there should be nthing on the system storage, what means there should be at least 40MBs free outta the 85.but I still get the "Storage memory critically low" message, and all the memory in the storage disappears!
when I connect my device to the PC via ActiveSync, and look up the my device folder (not the 4gb internal), it says I've got no memory free, but when I go into there, select all my files and click "properties",it says theres only 40mbs of data on it, still the 85mb system storage is full!I've tried everything:registry cleaning, removing all the programs, cleaning Opera cache and e-mail attachments, too, still nothing helps but a ROM update!after that everythings OK (for a while), and then starts all over again after a few weeks, and I don't wanna spend every 3rd week with reinstalling the ROM and set all the settings back (yeah I have the backup but still annoying to update ROM every month....:S)
Please,anybody, HELP!!!!
Something that might point you in the right direction ... when you select all the files and check the size, hidden files won't be included. Make sure you have explorer set to show hidden files and system files, or use something like total commander to find them.
Once you find out what is really taking up all the space, hopefully it will lead you to the solution. Sorry I can't suggest something more specific.
I realise this wouldn't help the original poster, but I'm posting this in case it helps others in a similar situation.
Today, for the first time, I got the dreaded 'you are running out of memory' warning and, sure enough, I only had 2MB left on the Storage partition. I only ever install apps to the 4GB Internal Storage partition and all that so there's really no reason why this should've been happening. What tipped me off to the solution was the fact that the only app I'd been using at the time was Opera. So, I tried clearing the Opera cache and, despite the fact it's set to only use 4MB of space, clearing it out reclaimed about 25MB of space in the Storage partition.
So, it would seem there's a bit of a bug there in Opera and I'd advise anyone having storage space issues to try that no matter how little space Opera might claim that it's cache is taking up.

You're a star...!
I couldn't work out why I had lost so much device storage space either...
Just regained a whole 9MB
Not a hell of a lot, but sure explained half of my problem...!
I ran out of memory - now WM wont load
I had those critical memory messages. did a hard reset, and now my diamond won't restart. it hangs on the windows mobile 6.1 screen.
any tips?
I can get into bootloader mode. is my only option to flash a new ROM?
tks.
With the latest SKTools (if you don't wanna edit the registry) it's easy to move the Opera cache to the internal 4 gig storage instead.

[Q] uninstalling App does not free space

Hi there!
I use a G1 with Super E mod.
apps2ext with a 512 mb ext partion for that.
I have about 60 apps installed, all working well.
now i installed the new opera mini and the message "few storage" poped up..
I uninstalled it, but the message didn't disappear.
Then I look it up: only 5 mb left
I removed some other apps, but as suggested, this didn't free up much space (~,5 mb), because of apps2ext..
I cleared my cache using nandroid, but still the same..
What is using all my phone space?
can I clean that up somehow?
Thanks!
Cholera
As you wrote, you have apps to sd, so most likely the app are not stored on /data, but on /sd-ext/...
Cleaning /cache will not help you, because it's almost unused. The problem you might have is, that internal space on /data is filled up, so try to clear all the application caches, especially browser, market, ....
This should free up some amount of memory and you should be able to install Opera Mini.
i ran into this same problem a couple of days ago. it was a difference of method to get this error however. my phone crashed after trying to open an app and then corrupted alot of my apps so i had to uninstall and re-install. i then found it was telling me i had low space. i cleared all my caches and checked which apps were installed on my phone and which on SD. however the only comonality is the Opera Mobile app. i too installed it when i got this error too. can this be a coincidence or not?
market cache: 450kb
browser cache: 200kb
opera mini cahce: 0kb
gmail storage : 800 kb
news and weather: 28kb
downlolad manager: 250kb
deleted these, but still have 7,8 mb free space..
had a look at /data:
du ./data -h : 47mb used
I had a closer look at the stuff and found:
13.1M ./com.opera.browser/lib
even if i dont have opera mobile installed, i also found
925.5K ./com.opera.mini.android
which i currently use...
removed the com.opera.browser .. 20mb free...
additional apps that use much space here:
# du ./ -h |grep M
1.5M ./com.facebook.katana
1.7M ./com.rovio.angrybirds
1.0M ./com.android.providers.contacts/databases
3.0M ./com.adobe.reader
17.5M ./com.navigon.navigator
these are large, but ok..
and this one:
899.5K ./com.android.packageinstaller/files -> i delete the tmpCopy.apk
now i have a bit of a breath.. lets see what we can delete from the system
i created an sd-ext and lost about 250 mb of internal memory. what gives? also, i see no extra partitions anywhere and i dont know where my apps to sd are

im not sure about the loss of space, however you will not see an ext partition using windows as it does not recognise it. with some file explorers you can pick it up if im right. otherwise you have to use linux on the sd card to see the partition. it cannot be done via the usb mount
I thought it might be something like that. i'm a windows guy. mcse. but i know zip about unix/linux. lol. it doesn't make sense though to presumably make a partition on the card and then it takes from your internal space. so I don't see the point of partitioning your card. hence, app2sd seems useless. I cannot find an explanation anywhere of how it works. also, I have an incredible, what the hell is that 8gb of memory for. no explanation anywhere. it just sits there free. what is it for if it can't be utilized?

I cant understand why its taken up space on your phone tfor a2sd apart from when it adds the data files for the apps. the a2sd partition stores the apps on the sd card in a partition that it cons the phone into thinking is an internal section.
Where is the 8gb you are referring to? is it on the phone or the card?

exactly! there is 8gb free. well, 7+, but I don't know linux. so it's just a waste. i ended up reformatting my card and got the space back on my internal memory. can anyone explain that? I gave it a shot cuz I know computers and it worked. i back up everything, but it's a 2 hour downtime. I would just like to know what the heck is the point? anyone know what that 8gb is wasted for on the Incredible?
what rom were you using or trying to use? all the info helps solve the issue

using ultimate droid now. no themes. pretty simple. have used several rom's. no one can explain what the 8gb is for. not even verizon. or HTC.
the incredible has 750mb of internal storage. I can see that's for apps and OS. but there are 8gb of other internal memory that is free. wtf? I've been kind of ignoring it thinking it might be for future use or something, til I partitioned my sd card and realized it took from that 750mb space.
as far as i know it shouldnt have taken anything from that space at all. it should have done what every computer does and only create a partition on the card. thats odd. do you get any names for the areas that are free? like you would with a folder name.

thats what i thought. like i said, i know windows through and through. there was no indication of a partition anywhere. kind of bugs me. always heard linux was easy. still would like to know about that 8gb too. don't get me wrong, i love the droid, but the way memory and or storage works makes no sense at all
there is an app called root explorer on the market. its a paid app but it lets you explorer all the folders and from what i can see the ext partition is known as sd-ext. sdcard is the obv one. system is the rom or os as it were and if installed correctly (only know this from the G1(Dream)) the data folder is where it stores all the information and settings for the apps and system settings
have you checked your text messages? because those also takes up space too, even tho text messages are really small in size, but if you have a LOT of them without deleting them, over time they usually build up

Database full: how to solve this probem?

Dear all,
first of all I wish to thank everyone in XDA that with his contribution helps us to make our devices blazing fast and really snappy.
Since I installed JPY firmware and I backed up every application I had the warning "Database almost full, please delete messages, contacts etc..." and in fact I have only 20Mb free.
I saw that Samsung to perform this big improvement in the software moved some application data in dbdata partition that is formatted to have only 128Mb!!
The problem is that at moment the maximum number of installable applications is limited due to dbdata space and this could be a big problem.
In other posts I read that other people had my same problem but no possible solution to fix it has been find out.
Is there any chance to fix this limitation?
Thank you for your awesome support

yes, it can be fixed by:
1/. remove/relocate the files under /dbdata
2/. disable the disk full warning (it will show u the prompt if the free space is under a certain percentage)
I still have over 90 MB left. Just how many apps do you have? 100+?
I have ca 80 applications.
Is it safe to move the app data from dbdata? If yes, where do I move the data?
80 applications!?! you a collector?
Any solutions
I've had the problem also till recently when I installed Darky's 9.0 and did a wipe for the sake of cleanness.
I am sure I'm going to encounter it again and I would gladly take some measures now when i have the time to do it before I am constrained by it.
At a rough search I did find some info about it, some even here on XDA, but nobody had a definitive solution.
Is there a way to increase this partition size or keep some info stored there in another place ?
Is there an app that will tend to put big chunks of data there, more than usual?
Hope somebody with better kung fu than us drops by and enlightens us
Every Smartphone has limited space. Every Computer has limited space.
Everything has limited space.
It's a smartphone, not a huge trash container where you can put everything you find at market into.
Only install apps which you are using often and not apps which you're using once a year.

There was a discussion in the cache bug thread about increasing partition size. No one knows for sure because none of these problems popped up until quite recently. Cache is even more troublesome since it means we might not be able to download apps in the future.
But your usage is still unusual. I would suggest going through the app manager and see if any app is hogging up data.

I also have this problem, using right now 45mb of 96mb, that is with only 44 downloaded apps installed...

Do you have lagfix activated? Are you on 2.2.1 version?
I may be talking rubbish here, but shouldn't it be possible to move some of the folders to another partition and symlink them? This is Linux after all...
I'd try something like:
(THIS HAS NOT BEEN TESTED AND IT MIGHT BREAK SOMETHING)
- Move some of the biggest folders from /dbdata to another partition (if you're lagfixed and care about speed, you should move them to another partition with ext4 or whatever your lagfix uses). In a terminal emulator you could move them with:
mkdir /data/dbdata2; mv /dbdata/databases/com.whatever /data/dbdata2
- After moving them you should be able to symlink them with something like:
ln /data/dbdata2/com.whatever /dbdata/databases/com.whatever
Like I said, this isn't tested and might awfully break something (I'd do a backup and try with non-system programs first), but I'd guess it's worth a try if you really want to have more dbdata space.
EDIT: I just noticed that /system has limited space too, so you'd be better of moving them do /data, which seems to be the biggest partition on the SGS.
If anyone is interested I could try and create a shell script that would move all of the stuff from /dbdata to /data/dbdata and replace the stuff with symlinks automatically. Let me know...

Defragmenting the N6

Back in 2012 android police made a report that defraging your phone didn't help any.
Fast forward to today I don't know if that's still the case. I see apps like SD maid have RAVE reviews from Nexus 6 users on the play store review section https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm&hl=en
But is it actually worth using?
Does clearing cache and dalvik do the same in TWRP?
I am asking these questions because I have moved around 24 GB's of data the past 2 weeks into different folders and deleted alot of stuff off the phone. I want to make sure my available memory is displaying correctly now.
I don't think defragging would do anything for performance on a mobile phone with flash storage. Defragmenting a hard drive is done to improve seek times and general performance, and I believe it's specifically with FAT/NTFS file systems where this is most useful.
Like SSDs, seek times aren't affected by file fragmentation. I'd imagine any perceived performance boost is placebo.
You don't need to defragment flash memory...you just don't. You're only burning readbwrite life by doing so.
SD Maid can be a useful tool but it has nothing to do with fragmentation and it works differently than clearing the caches in TWRP.

It says in the description how it cleans up your storage:
Apps you have already deleted, sometimes leave data behind.
The system constantly creates logs, crash reports and debug files you don't really need.
Your SD-card is collecting files and directories you don't recognize.

It also looks to have a file explorer, app manager, and some other things.
Defragmentation brings no improvement on flash based storage and can actually be harmful, not only due to read/write cycles but also because in some instances it can counter wear-leveling.

SD Maid cleans up your storage by deleting files.
Which files are deleted depends on what tool you use.
See here: http://sdmaid.darken.eu/help
TL;DR
CorpseFinder tool for app remains, SystemCleaner for general clutter such as log files, AppCleaner for cache-like files (meaning files that don't contain user generated content and will be recreated if necessary).
exactly what @Dark3n said..
great app btw, been using it for years. no, it doesnt defragment
Fragmentation can occur on non-magnetic storage, as the file is fragmented into multiple, non-contiguous chunks which lead to excessive metadata. The less contiguous the data, the more metadata needed to string it all together. While the performance hit of this type of fragmentation on flash storage is far less than on magnetic storage, it exists nonetheless and general cleanup can help. While it pertains to how Windows handles fragmentation of SSDs, the following article by Scott Hanselman sheds a lot of light here.
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/therealandcompletestorydoeswindowsdefragmentyourssd.aspx
Regardless, moving around data of that size probably doesn't matter. It's more the TRIM function you should be interested, which is enabled in Android since 4.3. That helps the system know which blocks of memory truly have nothing in them for a faster and more even write.

[Q] Half of my internal storage is missing

OK, so I have no idea what happened. All of a sudden my space was used up. Which I thought was pretty strange. When I look in settings, I'm only using about half of what I have. However, the other half of my internal storage is just unavailable. My tablet knows how much space it has total, however adding up my used space does not yield a number matching my total space.
As long as everyone understands lol, can someone tell me how to fix this?
Anyone?

Try the app DiskUsage to see if what if anything is using up your storage.
Also try booting without a microSD in the tablet. I've seen it that a bad card caused this.
OK, so I downloaded disk usage. Apparently, 11 GB is taken up by Android. This seems strange to me.

Seems you used a different app. I meant the one by Ivan Volosyuk.
But if you have ES File Explorer or File Manager HD, they also can show you what's taking up storage down to the file level.
Either you have a lot of forgotten nandroids on there on some huge log files left over. Dig and drill down...
Ok, so I downloaded the one you meant. And this illustrates the problem to be system data. 11GB of it to be precise. What is in there for me to clear out? And where do I clear it from?

Are you rooted?
If not all the stuff in green is inaccessible to you. I'm running a debloated custom rom and my System section is about 9 GB. Your's is 12 GB (1 mib = 1050 kb roughly). Could well be that non-removable apps (aside from necessary system files) take up the difference. Nothing you can do about that without root.
But I see a pretty good chunk occupying media, especially your Android folder is pretty hefty. That is where your app data lives. The most interesting part is cut off in your screenshot. You got some game installed with a very large footprint in terms of cache. Check out the size of your Android/obb folder!!!! Mine is empty!
Swipe to the right in DiskUsage and check what's taking up the space. Pinch in/out to see details.
Man, this app is great! I'm so glad I discovered it for you
Move anything not crucial like pictures, videos to your microSD. Uninstall apps you don't use anymore, especially games.

Yeah I have root. I am running CyanogenMod on my tablet as a matter of fact. Was a real pita getting there thanks to Asus but I managed with help from XDA.
As for the Android folder, I checked it out, and I am an idiot. GTA San Andreas, KOTOR, Bards Tale. That's 7.5 gb right there. I didn't realize there was so much extra after the fact with them.
Thanks for the app suggestion. I am adding it to me toolbox.
