How to set downloads of system/OS updates via Wi-Fi only - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I own a Nexus 6 with android 5.1. Can any one tell me if the Android OS/System updates that have been downloading via cellular data can be set to download via Wi-Fi only. My data plan is limited at 1GB and these updates take over hundreds of MBs. I have disabled app updates except via WiFi but the OS updates continue to download.
If anyone knows how to turn off OS/System updates on cellular data, can you please share?
Thanks.

if you are expecting an update, you can always turn on wifi for it to download, but theres no wifi only mode on the device.

That is not cool. Is it an Android issue or Nexus specific? My device just ate a gig of mobile data on the last system update. I was home and connected to wifi, and my device is set to keep wifi on during sleep. System update used over a gig of background data

It's present in all versions of Android. The closest you can get to what you want is to disable cellular data, which can be accomplished by tapping the cellular signal icon in the quick toggles, then setting cellular data to off. However, that means the device will not use ANY data when not in range of a WiFi hotspot.
This is something you might wish to bring to Google's attention. They may have a reason for the setup.

Many system upgrades will wait until Wi-Fi is available--you can see this if you open the notification. It will say something like "will wait for Wi-Fi until <date or time>." To get the update immediately you need to turn on Wi-Fi.

download in progress help

My bionic when I go to the about phone ->update it says "download in progress" and tries to download something and never does anything. I'm currently running 905. I don't think that in will get the ICS update. If I update manually will i Have the same problem with ICS. I have searched all the forums and can't find anything. Please help
EDIT: I believe i fixed the problem by doing a factory reset on the phone.
Are you in a wifi zone or trying to do this on cellular data? For a large download, you may need to be on wifi, or at least have a strong data connection. Your battery saver settings may also be set to only d/l large files on wifi.

I have tried both switching back and forth its does the same thing every time. I have to manualy stop updater in the all --> aplications side.

Massive Battery Drain due to WiFi

I know this has been discussed about before. I have tried all of the other solutions, except a Factory Reset which i do not want to do. I do not have WiFi always scanning enabled. But i do have Location set to Battery Saving and Location Reporting enabled. I never had this problem until yesterday. My phone never sleeps and gets really hot because of the constant awake time. I did not install any new application. Google Play Services updated to 7.x. But i doubt that is the problem. The issue goes away if i switch to LTE only. I'm on stock 5.0 and I'm not rooted so i cannot drill down to see what exactly is eating my battery. Any help is appreciated.
Just an update. This seems to happen only on my Work Wi-fi which is not password protected. It does not happen on my home wifi or any other public access points. Any help is appreciated.
Download this app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer
It will show you the other wifi connections using the same channel and if there are many connections, the phone will struggle more to get hold of a good signal though it shows that it has excellent range.

Out of curiosity, have you posted the same thing on Moto Owners forums too?

Thanks for the reply I have read the same problem been posted on Moto Owners Forum, but it wasn't me
I did install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm&hl=en and found that it was Google Backup Transport that was continuously keeping wifi on by downloading something. It does not happen with any other wifi network. I even switched off Backup & Restore. But this does not help.
I know there is no configuration problem in the router, because my Nexus 7 2013 works just fine on Wifi.
Ok..if you have access to the modem settings, try changing IPV6 to IPV4 in the settings.

Unfortunately i do not have access to the modem settings as it is my work Wifi. However, my phone worked fine on the same Network with same settings few days back. Don't know what is wrong with the phone. I don't want to factory reset yet

Moto Z3 Play Sprint Hotspot

Hello,
I am coming from Samsung Note 8 and Sprint service. You are able to tweak the apn settings with shortcut app to enable hotspot. Lte functionality does not show up on the moto z3 play. Is there a way anyone has been able to enable hotspot? I searched google and this forum and have not seen any mention of it. I am on 8.1 oreo. Thanks. (carrier unlocked usa model)
It's very easy to get tethering to work on this phone. I'm on Sprint too. First you have to be rooted. After that install a build prop editing program, which can be found in the play store. Add the following line into your build.prop file
"net.tethering.noprovisioning=true". Save the file and reboot. Stock tethering should than work.
I would highly suggest that you also try out the Fabio Tether app on the play store. It's a paid app but you can run a vpn program on your phone and than run the fabio tether app and have all tethered data run through the vpn.

Forgot to mention that if your on a Sprint or Tmobile unlimited plan it's always best to run a VPN even when not tethering. If you watch youtube you can watch it in full HD 1080P with the VPN on with no buffering (dependent on how good your local tower is). Without the VPN they notice your watching youtube and slow your download speed so really only 480P runs smoothly.
Every Motorola phone I've used you can put the phone in airplane mode disable it then turn on hotspot. It works for me and never had a problem with it. No root needed.
I found the Z2 Force airplane mode hotspot workaround no longer worked after the Oreo update unlike every other Moto phone I have including the Z3 Play. I'm on Sprint and the Pie update is now available for my unrooted Z3 Play. I'd love to know if the airplane mode hotspot workaround still functions after the Pie update. If anyone has specific experience in doing so they can share I'd be very appreciative.

Can you please provide a link to root guide? Doesn't root compromise phone security? I tried the airplane method and it shows hotspot on but devices are not able to get any connection.

In case anyone comes back to this... I finally did the Pie update and the hotspot workaround still functions. On the Z3 Play Sprint version both LTE Calling and WiFi Calling also work - they don't on the unlocked version. I did an internal format on a 64GB SD card and moved enough apps that the phone runs decently, and I can keep my Kickstarter and Magic Box and work with it.

Thanks for This! Mine was working on my Rooted Unlocked Moto Z3 Play, but I flashed the latest Sprint Firmware and it started counting my Hotspot Data. This seems to have worked. I tried Fabio Tether(paid) app but couldn't get any of my devices to see the hotspot.

I have an Unlocked Moto Z3 Play, but just flashed it with the latest Sprint firmware. The Wi-Fi Calling & LTE Calling option just fails entitlement(Error 1282) when I try to activate it and I don't see VOLTE option.

Enable hotspot with WiFi remaining on disabled after update

Hi All, I have an Exynos Note 8 SM-N950F. I have finally updated the software to android 9.0, and now whenever I turn on the hotspot, it disables WiFi.
Can anyone point me to a rom or fix to enable both WiFi and hotspot, so I can share my WiFi connection with the hotspot? If not, I assume I have to install the stock 8.0 rom for the SM-N950F?
I'm not sure that's possible. By enabling hotspot, your phone becomes the local wifi for the devices you want to share it with using your data. If you are receiving wifi from somewhere, why cant the other devices you want to use just use that wifi as well? If wifi is available to your phone, I'm not understanding why you have to activate hotspot to provide wifi to other devices when they could just obtain wifi from the same place your phone is getting it from already.

Thank you for the reply! I didn't believe so as well, but at least the Exynos Note 8 had this ability. I could hypothetically be on a plane, join the paid WiFi, and share the connection to my laptop. I used it to join a VPN on my phone, and share with my laptop. I also used it as a network extender while traveling; I'd place my phone in the area that got the best WiFi signal, and use it as a repeater for my laptop. IDK if this is a general android 9.0 disabling, or specific to Samsung, but I need this feature on my phone. The note 8 was close to perfect, except for these software limitations, including the slow charging bug. I specifically imported the Exynos version when I bought it so I could roll back the software if I had to.
Ah , ok that makes sense..

Question Data connection is active even when on WiFi

Hi all,
I'm noticing that the data connection seems to be active even when on WiFi. Is there any option that I need to disable so that the phone runs entirely on WiFi. I looked in the developer options and keep data alive option is unchecked. Am I missing something?

Hi, just go into Wi-Fi Settings / Advanced and switch off tab (Switch to mobile data)
That's all.
Hi. Thanks for this but this option was never enabled in the first place. Anyways, it's self corrected now...aah..the wonders of the tech world

It's enabled by default just to keep your internet connection stable when wi-fi has an issues.

It will re-appear occasionally. Even if you turn off the "Switch to Mobile Data" setting, the mobile data icons and wifi icons will appear concurrently on the status bar. This happens even when the wifi connection is solid. Usually the mobile data icon disappears after a few seconds or minutes on its own. I'm not sure if its by design (for MMS or RCS or something else) or if it's a bug. But you're not the only one seeing this. My colleague has an S21U too and he shared a similar experience.

I'm suffering from the opposite problem!
I *WANT* to keep mobile data enabled while connected to Wi-Fi, but the setting on my phone has no effect! When I turn on the setting, my phone will still ignore mobile data.
I verify this by connecting to my dashcam via Wi-Fi. The dashcam does not provide any internet via Wi-Fi, but merely allows my phone to view the dashcam output and stored files. But once I connect my phone to the dashcam, then my phone has no connection to the internet. I can't force it to use the mobile data at that point. The phone is not behaving as it should. My older phone, LG G6, is able to successfully connect to the dashcam and still access the data through the cell signal.
The S21 Ultra simply cannot achieve this. I have the T-mobile variant, in the US.
I believe this is a bug. Can you get this setting to actually work? Like maybe test it by connecting your phone to your Wi-Fi router but disconnect the modem from the Wi-Fi router?
I'll post a separate thread for this, because I think it's a bug and maybe others are suffering from it without realizing.
