Hi all,
A while back I installed Cyanogenmod 11 on my tf701t, and also installed Linux (Arch).
This was working perfectly - or at least gave me what I needed.
I would reboot normally and Cyanogen mod would boot - and if I booted with power+vol down, I could access the menu, choose RCK, and Linux would boot.
Recently it is only booting into Linux (RCK). Powering up normally would boot into Linux, and Power + vol down also boots into Linux - I seem to have lost the boot menu and the ability to boot Cyanogenmod. Linux itself is still running fine, but I still want access to Cyanogenmod. How can I restore the menu, and specifically make it appear on power+vol down butttons.
Any thoughts?
I've (re)downloaded the firmware from ASUS, but don't I need to power+vol down in order to install it? Is there any other way?
Thanks for reading.
Can you give a link to the boot loader or firmware that you're currently running? I'm interested in what you're talking about... it sounds like an old mod... I have never heard of Linux booting in recovery mode... Or are you talking about recovery mode how...? So, what exactly happens when you select RCK, it boots into what?? You're not getting confused between CWM recovery or similar and an actual operating system Linux?
I found the link but it seems like it has a lot of bugs. http://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf701/general/native-linux-asus-tf701t-t2973119
You should post your question in that thread. That sounds like a great project and I would install it if it was more stable.
Thanks for responding.
I actually used the link you provided above and it works perfectly.
I had it booting into Linux when RCK was selected, and CyanogenMod when Android was selected.
That's what I meant by having Linux in Recovery mode. I don't have CWM Recovery installed (only used that briefly to get CM11 installed, then it wasn't required) So what I have installed is Linux + Cyanogen, but can only access Linux at the moment.
The problem now is that the boot menu no longer appears, so I can not select between them....regardless of what I press, (vol down+power etc). It would just boot into Linux each time. The only key press that I seems to do something is (vol+ & Power), which takes me to APX mode - but is there anything I can do in that mode?
What I really need is to get the menu back and/or be able to access fastboot mode. Not sure if there's some other key press combo or other hack that I'm not trying. I actually don't know how I got to this state as I wasn't messing around with anything before I lost the menu.
Can't find out the firmware version as that is displayed in the menu that isn't appearing (or in Android), but I did install the latest US version from ASUS, whatever that is.

Ok, first off I understand why you cannot post in the correct thread because XDA restrictions on newbie post limits... Second, all you need to do is flash one of the latest recovery images, TWRP or CWM or cm recovery. This you will need to do with your computer in fastboot mode to flash the .img... you will possibly lose the Lenox installation and possibly all data, but if you reinstall it possibly could detect the correct partition and have your data... I would suggest that you install recovery and then install the latest cm 12.1 or another recent ROM and make sure that your Asus firmware is the latest also... Which should be US 11.4.1.29... then, I would suggest trying to install the Linux partition on your external SD card instead of internal memory as they are currently talking about on that thread... here is a link for the TWRP recovery image: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61045480&postcount=2

This is exactly my problem - I can't get to fastboot mode - only linux and APX mode.
If fastboot is what you get to when pressing power+vol down, then this is no longer working, it seems to have no affect and will still boot into Linux. If there's another way to get into fastboot that would be ideal.
Not too worried about losing data - I have backups so can wipe everything if need be

Use this link: https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_tf701t and scroll down to where it says "Installing recovery using fastboot" is not a fun process and you have to have all the correct drivers and everything on your computer... If fastboot is not working for you, then you might have to do a complete flash to stock from a ASUS which you can use the computer or your external sd card to do... fastboot mode can be a black blank screen so you never really know if you're in it or not. Have you tried to hold both volume up and down with power button? You need to try every option and then connected to computer to see if it detects it...

Thanks for the suggestions
Yes, fastboot is not an option, used it before so no worries with drivers, but can't get to that mode now let alone connect to it.
Volume down and power does the same if pressing only power - just boot into Linux.
Volume Up and power takes me to APX mode (with the blank screen) - AFAIK this is different to fastboot mode. Linux detects it as Nvidia, not ASUS which it did previously when I was able to use fastboot mode. Either way, I've tried sudo fastboot mode when it's in APX mode, and it doesn't list the device. If there's something I can do in APX mode then that will work, but after reading many threads I couldn't find how to use APX mode on the tf701t.
I always thought fastboot was the bootloader (ie when the menu appears), which I'm not getting now - and this is also required for flashing back to stock from SD - am I right?
Fastboot mode is a hidden link to the root boot partition... The menu that you get to choose from RCK and such is the actual boot menu and the firmware that should be current from ASUS... The RCK option selects a certain partition of memory allocated for a separate mini os such as a recovery image or Linux...?.?.?.? Lol... if I were you, I would update the firmware to latest stock using the SD card... you can search for the link or I'll post it tomorrow because I'm about to fall asleep, good night...

I'm not really sure how to flash anything at the moment as there's no bootloader
Here's a quick video I made of the current bootup: https://youtu.be/cLFXiEEVBD0
This sequence of events happens weather I press power+ vol down or not.
All instructions I've read including this: www.transformerforums.com/forum/gui...e-firmware-tf700-tf701-tf300-tf101-tf201.html
suggest that I need to have a bootloader, or fastboot, or a working android (ADB), but all of these require a working bootloader.
I tried putting the latest firmware on an SD, rebooting with power+vol down as the above instructions say, but I still get it booting into Linux as in the video. Instructions for installing TWRP/CWM etc also require fastboot or bootloader (for microSD).
So in the absence of having a bootloader (or anything provoked by power+ctrl down) - am I just stuck with my current setup?
Here is a possible solution over in the Linux thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62814146&postcount=179
this was a concern of mine as well about installing linux on my tf701 using this method.. I think one of the posts about multi boot recovery where linux sits actually makes mention of not being able to go back to a standard setup and losing recovery mode altogether.. As much as I'd love to run linux on my tf701, I dont know that I could deal with losing the ability to flash android roms and mods.
How did things turn out for you? Did you manage to figure a way around this dilemma?

I tried searching but i cant find my answer. I want to know what is the difference between hboot and fastboot and what are they used for i just came from a captivate and it only uses recovery so im little confiused. I saw somewhere a guy briked his phone becouse he didnt know the difference lol

I have the same questions. I have read in threads that you should use fastboot to flashs this or that and also they talk about booting into Hboot and flashing different versions of Hboot. However I can find no instructions or information on how this is done. I am eagerly awaiting some info as well. I am most appreciative of any help and info.
If you reboot the Nexus One while holding down the trackball, the first screen you see (mostly white) will be the HBOOT screen. This is the initial boot loader, used to load the OS. You have no USB connectivity at this point.
If you use the volume buttons to scroll and the power button to select, you can select the Fastboot option. This will bring you to the fastboot screen and, assuming you have your phone connected to your computer, it should display "FASTBOOT USB". You can also get here by pressing and holding the volume down button while booting. From here, you can use the "fastboot" commands from the SDK to flash new disk images - recoveries, radio firmwares, kernels, etc. This is also the spot where you can (again) use the volume buttons to scroll, select Recovery, and press the power button to boot into Recovery.
My descriptions may not be entirely technically accurate, but should at least help you understand the functional difference between the two. I hope. Maybe someone else can chime in with a more technical explanation.

You guys certainly need to read the wiki.
A Nexus One has 6 partitions: misc, recovery, boot, system, cache, and userdata. HBOOT is the bootloader image, or the misc partition of a Nexus One. Fastboot is a binary that you use on your computer which allows you to, among other things, flash images to the various partitions on your Nexus One. However, fastboot commands can only be used if your bootloader is unlocked.
HBOOT is the bootloader, the program that runs first (well, almost - radio runs first, hboot second) and loads everything else - recovery or OS.
"fastboot" is the SW interface of HBOOT, allowing to control the bootloader, making it do certain things.
Read the Wiki, as suggested, and also search the forum when you need information. No need to "wait" for the information to be delivered, unless you think that in 11 months with one of the most development-abundant phones in existence nobody ever thought of writing down that information - doesn't sound very likely, does it?

You are in the wrong thread. This is for Nexus One. You should use Google to search for your phone's procedure.
I have a S7 that is an X rev and it only has one camera on it and it has a different ID than the current streak 7s, so I can't apply the update that tmobile put out.
So I rooted the S7 and ran ROM MANAGER and it insists that the clockworkmod is installed correctly, but I can't reboot into recovery from that program (I don't think it works on s7 anyway) nor can I do it with the volume+ and power. (All that does is to boot into android)
The fastboot seems to work fine, so is there a way that I can push one of the .ZIP file ROMs using fastboot? I was thinking the "Dell Streak 2.2.2 update with FULL ROOT" would be a good one to try, but there are many .img files in the zip file and when I try fastboot update, I get the following errors:
archive does not contain 'android-info.txt'
archive does not contain 'android-product.txt'
error: update package has no android-info.txt or android-product.txt
I know that the following lines will work, but there isn't a system.img in the .zip file.
$fastboot flash boot boot.img
$fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
$fastboot flash system system.img
Thanks
Maj

Hey thatruth I've never used fastboot -iowhatever. All my fastboot cmds are fastboot (cmd) (dir) (file). Op so when holding +volume and power it doesn't put you in the bootloader? Your device may not work with cwr. Being a X device. And op are you using ubuntu/linux?

to get into cwr you have to hold vol and power. Then at the android menu select option 2 update.pkg. it will then boot into recovery
you can also reboot into recovery via adb
adb reboot recovery

I have not found a way to get into recovery. Using adb, fastboot, reboot into recovery options, and attempting vol+ and power, just boots straight into android. It says "cold-booting linux" and boots into android. It seems as if there isn't a real partition to do that, so I somehow need to dump an image onto the s7 so that it will have all of these partitions.
I have a Droid Incredible in which I've hacked to death, so I know how to get into the other menus, they just don't appear to be there or accessible for some reason.

Yah, the +volume and power just boots the phone right into android. ROM Manager tells me that my rooted s7 installs cwr just fine. (in fact I've tried every different version it offers) I use w7 x64.

Assuming that's the same cwm that I got in the streaksmart forum, yah. I flashed that using fastboot as the recovery and then issued the reboot into recovery command and it just booted up android.
At this point, I am assuming the build/version I have isn't a standard build and I will have to do something outside the normal channels to get it to work. I might just chuck this and get another. Especially since I heard that there will be a compatible version of honeycomb for devices with less than stellar resolutions like the s7.
I think the key here is to unplug usb from computer and hold down the power and Vol+ button to reboot into recovery mode.
I struggled with this for probably half a day figuring that out.
thx for your help and I finally figured out the fastboot and then recovery.img. So then I rebooted and seleted the software upgrade via update and it been stuck on that selection for awhile. is that normal?
by the way upper left hand it has in white lettering Booting recovery kernel image.

It should say Booting recovery kernel image and then take you straight into clock work recovery...
Mines doing the same thing just getting stuck when it says Booting recovery kernel image and the dell logo apears then when i press the power button it turns off if i boot the device up not plugged into my computer and hold the power and volume+ it will flash red the LED and turn off.
Resolved Yet???
I'm having the same issue... CWM says it's working fine but when I try to load ROM it reboots normally back into the menu... Red lights blinking and does nothing when trying to get into recovery mode. Fastboot is only thing that seems to work and that even doesn't work properly...
I'm stuck with a ROM that is constantly crashing. Every 10 min or so, it needs to go. Please anyone that may have a method I could try would be appricitated...

Im on linux Ubuntu 13.04.

When i chose from CWM recovery menu "Reboot recovery", phone boot into download mode, and thats all. Fastboot or adb dont see it.
But. In usb device list:
In download mode:
Bus 002 Device 061: ID 0bb4:0ff9 HTC (High Tech Computer Corp.) Desire / Desire HD / Hero / Thunderbolt (Charge Mode)
In recovery mode:
Bus 002 Device 063: ID 0bb4:0f91 HTC (High Tech Computer Corp.)
Assuming you didn't corrupt your boot loader you should be able to get at the boot loader and use fastboot to flash a new recovery.
Power the device off
Hold power and volume down, the phone should turn on and load into the boot loader.
From there you can select fastboot (navigate menu with volumn buttons, power button to select fastboot).
You can use this command to flash a recovery:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If you can enter bootloader, you may try formatting partitions from fastboot, and flashing them afterwards, that is if bootloader is unlocked.
You can also lock your bootloader and try installing RUU,it will put your phone back to stock,
P.S. - I'm new to this,so please consult with more experienced members, before doing anything

"screen with a phone icon and a green image like i can connect via usb or something, but then it turns red after about 30 seconds" -> that's stock recovery
Before, when you are in bootloader (image attached), are you able to "fastboot devices" and it shows up? because the bootloader is not affected by the recovery.
basically "fastboot flash boot recovery.img" put the custom recovery where the kernel is supposed to be.
First thing you need to get/confirm working is bootloader/fastboot.

In cwm adb will work.
So i think you have some issue with drivers.
And, however, if you turn off the phone, you can't access in bootloader with a longpress of power and vol-?
Hey, so I'm the one who had this same situation. What I had to do from what I recall is go to CWM screen, cleared the cache, even in advanced the davlik cache, then I believe (and you might have to try different combinations of this, because I don't 100% remember as I had before tried so many different ways) I unmounted the system mount, then went to reboot from the first screen to get to the bootloader (hold power button and volume down). After this, I clicked on Fastboot and it then went to Fastboot USB. This is where you should be able to connect. Don't leave this screen until you flash the recovery in the right place and then properly install the ROM. Let me know if you get to at least connecting and I can even send over an image for your boot, so you can at least get your phone back.
It can be done, I had the same situation so your phone is not bricked. Just keep working at it.

Hello everyone,
So, one day my tablet decided to get stuck on Fastboot 123 etc.
I followed a method that used the fastboot flash osloader efilinux.efi and fastboot boot droidboot.img and then sideloading the official firmware, that fixed it. Worked fine for awhile.
Now, I haven't been using the tablet much, so after like a month I try and see if it still works, turn it on, and it boots straight into UEFI where I can't do anything.
So, I went into DNX mode by holding down all the buttons, do the commands above again, and it boots into droidboot where I can select recovery, the problem is after I hit "OK" on recovery, when the device reboots it goes straight back into UEFI mode.
I've been reading for hours now and some people fixed it doing the above, but they can actually reach recovery, I can't.
Where do I go from here? What can I try?
Everything is stock btw, never rooted or unlocked bootloader.
Thanks
What exactly is "UEFI mode"? Do you mean the UEFI setup page? If you can get into Fastboot/Droidboot I'd suggest that you load a temporary TWRP recovery session using https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/intel-android-devices-root-temp-cwm-t2975096 and then install the full system backup from http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/ME176C/UL-K013-WW-12.10.1.36-user.zip

It won't help much in this case, but FYI it is possible to navigate in the UEFI setup page but only if you have a powered USB OTG hub and attach an USB keyboard. You just can't navigate using touch controls.
no need for otg, its unnecessary.
Turn off the tablet, then press all the buttons at same time, it should boot to DnX mode.
Do fastboot flash osloader efilinux.efi (the .efi file should be inside the esp.zip that is present in .36 update
then do fastboot boot droidboot.img (found in .36 update)
then simply load temporary recovery session and flash stock rom.

have you tried flashing it in ADB? i mean most of these tools are nice but when you type in the commands in adb to get things done then you will understand more and more about how everything works.

Did you solve this? I'm on the same situation. no recovery no fastboot!
Turn off your phone then press and hold power down button and don't press or hold nothing more. Hold power down and at same time connect your phone by USB to pc. Whoa, you are in a bootloader. It helped for me. Then you can reflash recovery and all will work again.
