Touchscreen died suddenly - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not a huge amount to report here but wanted to document this in case it was more than a random bum unit. If others have a similar issue worth documenting here.
Phone worked OK for first 48 hours. Then slowly the touchscreen started getting sluggish and eventually stopped responding all together. I thought at first I was having software/memory issues but wasn't the case. Other aspects of the phone work fine (buttons at bottom and on side, fingerprint reader). Resetting to factory settings did not fix issue. It's currently sat on the "Welcome!" screen waiting for me to hit "English" to continue.
So, returning to store tomorrow to get a replacement. Device is a 64Gb white T-Mobile Note5.
Other things I noticed with the device before it "died":
1) Fast charging was temperamental with some cables and chargers. I have spare fast chargers and it didn't work with the charger that came in the box.
2) Wireless charging only worked with half the charging pads I got. We bought a backup battery pack with built in wireless charger. This did not work (works on S6Edge and old Note3 with sview case).

Touchscreen Issue While Charging

So I just noticed something really bizarre with my Nook. The touchscreen started freaking out with false touches all over the screen. I used the Dolphin gesture interface to see what was going on, and every touch would register random touch points all over the place.
This happened while plugged into the Nook charger. The issue went away immediately after unplugging from the charger. I was afraid it was a heat issue, but this is not the case. I suspect it is the charger, and I am hoping it is not the touchscreen itself.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? I will try another charger later today and see if the problem is sill there.
--MrAnt--
I myself experienced something similar where the default browser kept doing odd things I just restarted and it seems to have gone away.
I tried restarting as well and the issue was still there. It only went away when I disconnected the charger.
--MrAnt--
I've had my nook for two weeks now and have noticed the same thing - weird touchscreen behaviour that goes away the instant I unplug the charger (usb).
I have seen this behavior on phones when I attempted to use cheap chargers. I suspect the voltage was not within tolerance and it caused the problem, based on the testing that I did. If you are using the original charger that came with the unit, you should try to obtain a new one.
I get this issue if my screen gets even slightly smudged. I think that once the official App Store comes I'm going back to stock and getting a warranty replacement.
This is a well known issue with many of the units.

I had the same issue with my first unit, I have had it replaced twice, (not because of this, but another issue). My current unit works fine connected to power. However It came with stock 1.0.1 and that may have fixed the issue in software.
migrax
The issue is most likey wit the stock charger wall wart. I have noticed that mine makes some VERY loud buzzing when plugged in and no cable plugged in. Prolly cheap caps in there. Poor filtering at best. This electrical noise is likely causing false capacitance spikes in the screen.
Almost tempted to order a spare and tear it down...put some electronics skills to use and build a better mousetrap as it were.
This happens to me as well. I have used family members and girlfriend Nook charger and it still happens. It doesn't affect 1 out of the 4 I bought.
So I figured out what was causing the problem. I was trying to use the charger plugged into a DC-AC inverter. The problem went away as soon as I plugged it into an AC outlet. I guess the Nook charger is sensitive to non-pure sine waves.
deadbot1, I noticed my charger also buzzes rather loudly when plugged in but not charging. I guess the chargers are not the greatest quality, based on the other comments here.
--MrAnt--
Yep, definitely low quality under the case. I've noticed that mine gets flat out HOT if charging from a low battery condition as well.
Once I'm back to work(stupid snow in SD) and have more free cash coming in I am going to order a spare and reverse engineer it with the goal of building a better replacement. I'll be posting my specs and designs as I go. Gotta see whats in there first...but I'm pretty sure that my new one will be based around a TS7805CZlinear regulator and a picaxe uMC if it needs brains.

Wireless Charging Issues (S6 Edge + New Charger)

Hello,
Wondering if any body else has been experiencing this and has come across a solution. When I put the S6 Edge on the charging pad (new one that came with the phone at Best Buy) it either works without issue 25% of the time, or the phone will say wireless charging paused after about 30 seconds and then the charging pad will flash 75% of the time. I am being sure to place the phone centered on the pad and on its back. Sometimes it will happen so many times in a row that I try unplugging the pad and restarting the phone and then it works, but I do not want to have to do this every time.
A lot of people are having the same problem and so was I.
Grab your phones charger and base and use that.
I think the long cord that comes with the wireless charger is causing the issue.
I have the same problem,,,half the time I put the phone on the charger and it works and the other times it doesnt.

Galaxy Gear Battery Not Charging

Hey everyone. So upon switching from Apple to Android, I remembered the Galaxy Gear I had and was enthralled to try it out once again.
I tried using the cradle that it used to charge on - Quick screen flash but didn't charge.
Took it apart, pulled the battery, put it back together, threw it on the charger - Didn't charge.
Took the cradle apart (3rd party one as I got this from a friend), cleaned the contacts, put it back together - Still nothing.
Lost the cradle parts so I stripped a spare Samsung microUSB cord, pulled the battery out, put the 2 wires on the correct contacts of the chip that is attached to the battery, held them in place whilst having everything still plugged in - Still nothing.
Tried charging it with a wireless Samsung charging pad - Still nothing.
I'm left with all the components of the watch, everything except the cradle. I was wondering if there was a way to charge the battery separate from the watch, maybe putting the actual battery directly on the wireless charging pad and seeing if it will charge, or if I could take the screen portion with the opposing contacts that lead to the mobo and see if anything happens. No, don't have money for a newer one. No, don't have money for another battery/cradle. Any ideas? I really like this watch. It was working fine a month ago. It was rooted with nullrom but I restored it w/Odin and it worked like new. I left it uncharged for a week or so and when I wanted to use it again, wouldn't charge.
Same problem i left my gear for 2 weeks without charging and now it doesn't charge
I too have had this problem. What seems to work (worked for me) is to charge you watch from a desktop/laptop usb port.
I had this problem . Thinking about it, I hasn't used the watch in over a month. I bought a third party charger for about $5 from amazon and it charged it fine. All is well with the world again
Some problem here. The only thing that works its charging with my laptop.

Wireless Charging Stopped Working

Wireless charging on my bundled Wireless Charging Convertible pad stopped working yesterday and I haven't been able to get it to function again. Starting yesterday morning, the charger pad wouldn't recognize the phone at all, case off. After playing around for a while, including clearing the cache from Recovery, I can get the charger to recognize the phone, the phone now says Fast Charging, but the phone continues to drain over time vs charging. Some users in the past have gotten a Charging Paused message, by I don't get that message unless I remove the phone from the charging pad.
I've tried two Samsung Fast Charging AC adapters, the USB cable that came with the charging pad, and an Aukey cable, same results.
Has anybody else experienced any issues like this with their Note 8 or convertible charging pad?
Edit: MST also doesn't work, I'd guess it's related.

Only way to diagnose this would be by trying to charge the phone with another wireless charging pad.
Does your phone charge normally through the provided type-C cable and power adapter?
Found a non-convertible style wireless charger a co-worker had, which charges his S7, but doesn't charge mine Note8. Could it be the phone itself?

I would not rule that out. I would take your charger and phone to a local best buy and test against a display, if your charger charges other phones, then it's your note. Or try your carriers local corporate store, they probably would help as well.
Sent from my Galaxy Note8 using XDA Labs
Well I can verify that the phone is the problem. Note 8 won't charge on any wireless charging pad, and Samsung Pay's MST also stopped working at the same time. Going to contact Samsung and see what can be done, hope I don't have to set up a new phone yet again.
This happens to me alot. I have 2 wireless pads, 1 verizon (from my note 7) and the Samsung Fast Charge.. It just stops working randomly.. Reboot the phone, then starts working fine again.
I still use my Nokia wireless pad....I found it charged the time as the Samsung fast wireless charger.
Probably not much help but are you on the latest firmware? When I updated mine it said the new changes were for the camera & wireless charging but of course no other details.
I haven't had a problem with mine though even before the update. I don't have the bundled charging pad though, I'm using the older Samsung fast charge pad.

Good luck. Same problem with my s8+, samsung says its not the phone. But it is. Every problem with a warranty repair is like pulling teeth with samsung. I wish LG would up thier phone game just a little, and I would never buy another samsung again.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
is this after the 9/25 update? Mine stopped charging after that update on both Samsung fast wireless chargers I have.
I have a Note 5 that will not charge on either a normal wireless Samsung charger or a fast charger Samsung pad IF the protective case is on it. This started just this week. I can remove the protective case and then it will charge.
I don't recall getting an update on or after 9/25. N950USQU1AQI5. I did get an update that improved camera performance, but it was a week or two ago. Just performed a factory reset, no luck on a fresh install. I can also confirm MST on Samsung Pay still doesn't work after factory default, they have to be related. Frustrated I'm going to have to deal with warranty. After two Note 7's, going through another Note 8 is beyond frustrating. QA @ Samsung could really use some work.
So Samsung has agreed to repair/replace the phone, but I'll be without the phone for 3 weeks. Since I just switched to Verizon, the only old cell phone I have won't work. Since I bought from Samsung.com directly, Verizon won't help. Samsung.com refuses to provide a loaner/temp phone or to cross-ship a new one. Their manufacturing defect means I have to bear the burden of their problems. I wouldn't care too much about wireless charging, but MST is also affected, and I love MST.
Lesson learned - Never purchase a phone directly from Samsung.com, even if that means getting a discount or promotion.
I just sent my Note 8 in for the Same thing. After 4 weeks of ownership it stopped charging wirelessly.
The Samsung Rep I spoke to seemed to think it was related to the NFC, something about NFC being involved in the wireless charging some how. So MST must be the reason.
I sent my Axon 7 for warranty repair the same day. Luckily I still have my LG V20 and Nexus 6P (with is horridly degraded battery), so I have backup phones.
I'm on firmware AQI5 and wireless charging has stopped working completely. I've tried Samsung and third party chargers, all of which worked last week and still work with other phones. So I'm thinking it's a firmware bug...

Describes my problem almost perfectly. Now on my third VZW note 8. First one charged fast wireless for exactly a month. Second one, worked for eight days. Now the third, 7 days.
All four of my offical Samsung wireless chargers quit recognizing at the same time. FYI; two charge pads and two charge stands all fast wireless and purchased thru out my time with S7 Edge (went thru 2 rounds note 7). To add to that the new promo convertible quit at the same time as well.
Pretty darn sure it's in the phones. The latest phone charged wirelessly to 100%, then nine hours of driving later, no go. Pulled my UAG Monarch off, still nothing. Tried the other wireless chargers, nothing. No new apps or settings changed during my drive. Thoroughly confused.
All three of phones were put thru the ringer with VZW tech support: check this, check that, safe mode and the end all factory data reset, still no go every time. I contacted Samsung directly once, what a waste of time. Their only answer was send it in for evaluation and possible repair or replacement, you should have your phone back in a couple weeks. Second go around with Samsung, I was transferred by VZW. Their answer that time was; send the phone and the charger. Had to reply, which charger, all of them? Samsung, then told me all of my older chargers aren't compatible with the note 8 and must have damaged it. That style of charger is still readily available and advertised as note 8 compatible.
I've never used NFC or MST, so I can't comment on that.
All three phones fast charge on the wire.
Can anyone verify compatibility or lack there of with all these fast wireless chargers I own?
Willing to try anything at this point. I would dump the 8, if I didn't use the pen so much. Been using note phone since the 2.
It's the phone. Contact Samsung for warranty repair.
Just got mine back and its working fine again.

According to the rep I spoke to it was to do with NFC, as it is somehow involved with the wireless charging process.
Sound a bit strange, but others are saying that wireless or MST payments are both affected. So I guess wireless payments and wireless charging are somehow connected.

I don't think it is. I got them to do a warranty replacement, and my new phone worked fine. But, as soon as I wiped my old phone in preparation for returning it, it started working as well. Then, a couple of days later, my new phone stopped wireless charging.
Right now, I am just hoping that the Oreo update fixes it.

Anyone having wireless charging issues?

I only got my phone last week but I'm already seeing an issue where it will stop wireless charging. If I'm just using it for a while and then go to put it on the charger and it will not charge or indicate that it's charging. I have been keeping a simple Spigen case on it but that doesn't seem to matter - did the same thing case or no case. I also tried multiple wireless chargers - same on all of them. It's definitely aligned properly too.
I do have Battery Care turned on (custom, after 10pm) - but even when that is active it still shows that it's charging and everything functions as expected. And this has happened outside of those specified BC hours.
A restart seems to bring it back - but something is up given that it's happened a couple times already in less than a week. Anyone else seeing this?
I'm just waiting for it to happen again before reaching out to Support.
Follow up: it just did it again this evening.
I wanted to avoid restarting the phone just to see if I could get it working again. I tried a couple chargers again, no sign of charging at all. I went into Battery Care and turned it off - still no charging. I plugged a cable in to charge and it worked normally. I waited a couple minutes, removed the cable again and then tried a wireless charger again and it worked this time!
I'm leaving Battery Care off and have now restarted my phone again. Will see how it goes for the next couple days.
I also found this thread on Sony's forums: https://community.sony.ee/t5/xperia-1/xperia-1-ii-wireless-charging-stopped-working/td-p/3686459
I'm not sure he was having the same issue though, as it appeared his wireless chargers at least detected the device and tried to charge - they just couldn't establish the connection to do it. Though his solution did sound like it was the "custom" option in Battery Care that may be the culprit.
It did it again this morning. Plugging a wired charger got it to work again but I've emailed Support now. This is dumb. Will update with any additional troubleshooting or possible solution.

Multiple chargers. A 15W Anker charger, a 3 coil Ikea charger, a generic 10W charger at work, and a Pixel Stand. As it's happened I usually have multiple chargers around to test, so I've tried any of them available. Temperature hasn't appeared to matter. I definitely have not had the phone "hot" when trying it but I have also waited like a half hour or so to try it again thinking about potential temperature issues.
I also posted it to Reddit this morning on /r/sonyxperia and someone responded saying that there's a new update from Docomo that appears to call out a fix for wireless charging occasionally not working. So I'm hopeful that might be what I'm experiencing. Still waiting to hear something back from Support.

I use one from Belkin. https://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F7U083/
When I use the phone heavily and it's sort of hot it doesn't charge for a while. Once it's cold it works flawlessly. I have the US version, latest firmware. And an addition to that is my Spigen case.
only thing I noticed is that it is very picky about positioning, as it is a long phone it easy easy to miss place
I've got issue with an ikea wireless charger plugged to a Sony clock.
Issue fixed with an other cable from the clock to the charger.
Use quality cable like the stock Sony one.

Purchased on release day directly from Sony Store online.
No issues with wireless charging until a few days ago.
Will first initially register as charging, but after 5 seconds, will stop and pop up window will indicate that wireless charging cannot start.
This issue is with several wireless chargers.
No issue with direct charging.
Tried BatteryCare function off/on, but no change.
Any assistance in helping resolve this will be greatly appreciated.

The issue has disappeared and functioning as designed.
