Is there a RE wiki? - Google Chromecast

Hey, there's a bunch of code by the great guys at TeamEureka, but there's a lot of the internal inner workings of the chromecast that I've been poking at for the last few months, I was wondering if there was a wiki (similar to the psdevwiki) where all the research goes?

I've owned my Wizard for a good 6 months now. In this time, I have learnt so much from these forums. This place is incredible and the wealth of knowledge here is mind blowing.
I've been reading up on all these different kinds of ROMs and updates and Radios etc etc. Since I am still very new to all of this, I've been researching about all of this for a while now. However, certain basic concepts evade me.
I'd love it if somebody here could outline what exactly all of this is. I see so many different kinds of ROM updates and it's like a sea of info which seems never ending. AKU's, Radio's, Extended ROMs, WWEs, A2DP... it all seems overwhelming. I was wondering if somebody could either put together or help me put together a very detailed guide about all these various facets of the Wizard.
In my opinion that would reduce the amount of newbie clutter plaguing the forums at the moment.
TIA

that is what the wiki is for.. if you want to get started giving back to the community that taught you so much then help us by adding and cleaning up the wiki!

ROM chefs.. point me in the right direction?

JAC, Drizzy, Cyanogen, CC, etc.. im looking at you.
I want to start building my own roms for the G1, but I'm struggling to bring together all the info I need. I'm no stranger to this kind of stuff, having built and themed roms for the Wizard for ages, but things were much simpler on that device with Kitchens and what have you.. all the tools and info were in one place. Cooking for the G1 seems to be a much more fractured process.
I know how to build a vanilla android from the source, thats well documented and I have no issues there, but I'm struggling when it comes to porting things in from one rom to another, for example, getting the hero apps running on other builds. Everytime I try to do anything interesting I just end up with a load of stale dependency errors and boot loops. I feel that I'm missing something critical here. I've read that you have to rebuild everything at the same time or the dalvik vm wont swallow it, but in that case I don't understand how you build precompiled code such as the htc framework and apks in with the source??
I'm a quick learner and if someone can point me in the right direction I'll have no trouble picking it up, but I'm pretty confused here. I'd really appreciate one of the big dogs taking 5 minutes out to show me the ropes. Thanks.
In b4 search, google, etc. I'm no n00b and believe me, I've tried. I'm loth to ask questions since I always prefer to find the info myself, but I can't find any kind of guidelines for building custom android roms anywhere. If someone provides me a link to a thread with this info in, I'll be suitably embarrased and skulk off to the corner.
yeah mang

yeah man what the flux capacitor ive used chris soyar guide but its incomplete
http://ctso.me/2010/01/building-an-android-rom-part-1/
ive use this guys blog and now i know how to sign the update zip
http://blog.coralic.nl/2010/01/25/how-to-create-update-zip-using-your-build-aka-system-img/
but te middle part what really maters i where i f up at and each tut has diferent ways of doing thing even cyanogens i mess up in before i do make j4
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.p...used::confused::confused::confused::confused:
Wow.. you dug this up from the deeps.. why the hell was I asking for Drizzy's advice!?
I figured it out eventually.. the information is out there and you can fill in any gaps with trial and error.
The main thing you need to grasp is which apks need to be signed together. As long as you get the signatures for the google apps and system apps aligned, it all falls into place.

looking for some docs/howtos for rom development/ hacking

hi everyone,
i'm following the tattoo/click threads for some time and i already downloaded and flashed some custom roms. since there is little progress in the past few weeks so i want to help to make some steps forward.
i have knowledge in c, c++ and java. but i'm not in rom hacking/development and i don't have much spare time.
what i need is some compact introduction and documentation. i know there are some devs around, maybe they can give me some hints howto start.
also if there are some concrete problems i'll try to help.
like i already said i don't have much spare time but i'm really interested to make our tattoo fully functional.
regards

You can See the source code right?

Hi guys, I have a quick question and I don't know how well this will go down but I thought I'd ask anyways....
Since we can decompile .apk's can we also cut and paste functions as well as pre-compiled bins?
I'm really interested in the cross compiled bins since it would be easier grabbing something that has already been done ( it sounds lazy but I'm only just beginning with Android app inventor and a couple of android books.)
again i'm really noob and don't want to offend anyone because of the hours of work that goes into development, but I feel the tool would be a great way to learn both code and structure..
cheers for any help and please understand i'm just curious
Sorry.. It isn't that easy. there are just binaries, no code.
But there are a lot of websites like http://www.anddev.org/ that have lots of code snippets and tutorials (I mean REALLY lots, tons, millions) you just have to look a little bit around... they are really good, for beginners too
But I'd recommend very basic hello world tutorials first and then a little later use the codesnippets and play around with them... understanding your code is important, otherwise you will get stuck when your code crashes and you have no idea why... and that sucks when you already have several thousand lines of code.
Trial and error and basic steps...
I'm just sayin'
nice site cheers
thanks for that, I am on my way to better understanding things now.
PS when you said just binaries you were talking about the .dex files not the actual linux bins correct?
'cause if there is a way to just yoink them it would be gr8
thnaks for the help
If you are interested in learning java and android programming head over to http://www.thenewboston.com/
This guy has some awesome tutorial videos (hundreds). I am learning from these!
There are java decompilers which can be used together with dex2jar. http://code.google.com/p/dex2jar/

Anybody have advice on starting Arduino?

Hey,
I'm kinda looking at the Arduino stuff lately...
I'm a little interested in it myself, but I think even more so I'm interested in it for my son. He's starting to really get interested in computer and doing more than just playing games. I think this would be a great way for him to learn not only the software end of things but also the hardware end.
I'm trying to find a good quality "starter kit" that has some basic lessons to help us get started. Because this is all new to me as well there wouldn't be much I could do to direct him, so having those lessons/sample projects would really be key.
Do a websearch will yield plenty of options, but I have no idea what's good and what's bad. Anyone have some first hand experience with this?
Check this tutorial out! http://www.ladyada.net/learn/arduino/index.html
This gets the Arduino R3 kit!
And is a complete stepwise guide!
Arduino... My 2nd year uni nightmare...
One of our profs put a videotutorial on the net for us, but it's freely available. Here: http://vimeo.com/10461008 There's also more on his blog.
Also, our coursebooks (I've uploaded them to 4shared): Arduinointeractiondesignyear2.zip
